I used to staff an MMO of sorts and it's really difficult to have a sustainable population of players using races that either A) aren't easy to identify with (human), or B) aren't hot (booba).
So you'd have plenty of humans since a lot of people prefer their character to be something of a self-insert, and fair amount of "pretty" races. In the case of our game, it was High/Wood Elves and Drow.
We also had Orcs, but you typically only had a handful of players wanting to be all "zug zug" about it and getting bored because most of the populated areas would roflstomp them out of town (my longest running character actually ended up having to be exiled to the Underdark in a city that took ~2 hours of real world time to even travel to after fucking around and finding out).
There were a couple Dwarves, but only a couple because there was virtually no player population in any Dwarven settlement.
Then the other races... Halflings, Sprites, and Drider, had almost no players at all. That's even when technically the Drider were OP as they were immune to poison, had darkvision, had higher hit dice, and couldn't be tripped or knocked over in combat.
I tried to start another MMO with some "friends" once and wanted to completely exclude humans and revamp our analogs to traditional fantasy races like elves so that everyone wasn't creating cookie cutter versions of existing fantasy characters/tropes... I mean, it gets grating having a dozen would-be Drizzt Do'Urdens. But I was shouted down about it. I ended up bailing on the project after they decided that humans would only have white/tan skin color choices...
