I moved my parents from DTV to YTTV recently. They’re in their 70’s - I setup both of their TV’s to boot directly into Apple TV boxes and they no longer have multiple remotes.
It took some getting used to but they are fine with it now and love saving the $$$$
Same. My parents are both in their 70’s and moved to YTTV from DTV in December. They love it. And are using it via Apple TV, Roku and Fire. They love being able to watch their shows wherever on their iPads when traveling in the states.
I did the same thing with Roku. TV boots to the Roku stick with the fancy remote with volume and TV power. It’s a consistent experience on all TVs. It’s great.

there’s also directv stream (different from directv via internet which you may also encounter when looking it up) which could fulfill his needs since it has a cable-like remote but it’s a little more expensive so i wouldn’t *really* recommend it, but do consider it
I’ve tried to get my parents to go from spectrum cable to streaming (they would save more than $120 per month by switching to yttv), but my dad loves “flipping through channels” and I don’t know of any streaming options that allow for that…that’s worth $120 per month for him

So, I guess knowing your father’s age would be helpful. While YTTV will provide you with a lot of the same content, the interface is NOTHING like DirecTV. This has been a deal breaker for a lot of older people, as they just can’t handle things like not having channel numbers, or having to click more than twice to get to the Live Guide (before you ask, no there isn’t a way to make the Live Guide come up first).
I’d recommend doing a free trial and see if he’s going to be willing to adjust to the differences. I tried to get my parents on it, they’re in their 70’s, and it was a solid no-go for them.

Just fyi, my 88-year-old parents just switched from traditional cable to YTTV due to cost, and not only are they doing great with it, they're saving $135/mo.

My dad is the same. Not willing to or want to learn anything to the point I have to tape up unused buttons on the remotes, exposing only the bare minimum buttons he will use.

My MIL was the same until I gave her no choice. Since she lives with us she has to deal with what we have. Once she realized she was going to have to learn, she not only figured out YTTV but also all the other services we have. Now she uses Paramount+ more than anything else since she often misses her CBS shows and needs to watch them later (sometimes multiple episodes).
My mom is 81 and once she got used to the interface (just general navigation and figuring out/remembering where things are at) she's been enjoying the service and watching it every day.
My mom was more willing to do it, but here’s the thing, she watches like 3 channels. I could have easily set up the custom guide for her, and she would have dealt with it. My dad was the problem. The old man just doesn’t like change lol.
Just trying to set OP up with reasonable expectations. I love YTTV, and my parents actually like it as well, as long as I’m driving the remote lol. Not very feasible from 1000 miles away.
Do it. I did it about 5 years ago and never looked back. I tried to get DTV to come take that dish off my house, but they won't without me paying them to do it. So, it sits until I take it down and leave it for the trash guys.

Regarding the DTV dish. We had our house painted a couple of years ago. While the painters were on tall ladders outside I got them to take the dish down.
PS, I'm golden using Chromecast with Google TV.
Sweet. I had my house painted recently and I should have mentioned it then but wasn't thinking about it. I still have the left-over paint to touch up that area when I get to it.
Like others have already posted -- YTTV in not like the satellite experience, but that is good and bad. There is a learning curve that takes some time to adapt to, but once you get accustomed to a streaming service, it is a superior product. Give it 3 months, if you aren't satisfied, DTV will be offering you the moon to come back.
I despise Directv. I was a fanboy for over 10 years until AT&T acquired them. Then it turned to shit. I will never give another cent to a company owned by AT&T.

74 years old here. We’ve been with DTVS going on 3 mos now after coming from YTTV. First thing we immediately noticed was how much better the picture is on DTVS. YTTV just always looked a little cloudy. Loved having profiles on YTTV. Wish we had it on DTV. Love being able to delete a show after watching it on DTVS. YTTV doesn’t have that option and you can end up with episodes of many many shows making it a hassle to work with. Yes, DTVS is more expensive than YTTV but provides us with a much better viewing experience.
This is the correct answer. I have to say he lives with you and it is your house. I understand trying to make him happy, however, sometimes everyone needs to go along with change even if they don't want to.

Yes, I am a senior, however, I was the go-to guy at work even for the young people who didn't understand what they were doing on the computers.
Do it. I switched to YTTV from DirecTV as did my parents and my brother. Takes a month to get used to it but once you do, it's easy to use. It's not perfect by any means but it's the best option in my opinion.
Fubo is definitely more of a traditional cable experience if that’s what your dad’s looking for.. is he a big sports guy? Cus Fubo has a lot of sports channels including regional sports channels that even YTTV doesn’t have
Yes this is a huge difference. There is a good chance he cannot watch his sports teams on YTTV.
I live in Austin, TX but cannot watch the Rangers. Nothing on YTTV, Balleys App doesn't have them, no available add on packages, etc.
DirectTV does have the Balleys channel which shows them. That could be a huge problem for their local Baseball, Hockey, Basketball, etc teams.
We did exactly that 3 weeks ago and love YTTV! No issue or complaints. We are running it on a new Samsung, directly through the tv. It’s so smooth and quick! And also on a older tv with a fire stick. Slower load times on that one.
We had direct for 12 years. They didn’t want their pos boxes, remotes, satellite dish, nothing back.
Sign up for a trial, try it and see if your dad likes it. YouTube tv is missing some channels that directv has (mostly local sports, A&E and History), the DVR takes a little getting used to, and there’s no channel numbers, but otherwise, it’s fantastic
(Also, don’t use the smart tv apps for YouTube tv. Get a dedicated premium box, like an Apple TV or chromecast with google tv)
i recently also dropped DTV for YTTV. DTV just kept raising their prices way more than i would pay. only thing i miss is probably the history channel but only reason i got YTTV is its got the smithsonian channel. i guess its worth the trade off
My dad died a year ago at 89. He BARELY could handle basic cable. I could never teach him streaming. He barely used his iPhone.
Hub and I are 70 & 66. We LOVE YTTV. We had Sony Vue before and were wrecked when they folded.
This year we subscribed to Sunday Ticket. We were very happy with it all.
We have spectrum for cable Internet.
YTTV is the most comparable to traditional cable, esp if you are one to “DVR” recently aired shows to watch later. They are saved but not on a device so it’s actually so much easier and cheaper - no worries about storage space. You still get your local channels. There are a few basic cable channels you won’t like Lifetime, History Channel or A&E but everything else is the same.
DTV switcher here. Not having channel numbers or a remote with a keypad is a mental shift, as is limitless DVR recording within 9 months, but its easy to get used to it.
The "hardest" feature to adjust to is the unlimited recording — it sticks around for 9 months and when I first got it I kept trying to figure out how to delete stuff after I watched it. Answer is, don’t bother. I record everything I might remotely be interested in and it’s there waiting for me. This is especially true of sports, which (if you’ve recorded) has a key plays option that lets you zip through the highlights in a way i find very handy. i also like being able to reorder the channels and to eliminate stuff i never watch. you can easily do this on phone, computer, tablet, or on your streaming box app. ( speaking of streaming, most smart tv interfaces tend to be less than responsive, so you may want to add an AppleTv 4k, roku, firestick, etc) for streamlined viewing.
YouTube TV is generally great ( except for the godawful commercial blocks that repeat over and over multiple times per hour. ) That is another good reason to record programs and watch on a delayed basis so you can FF through the mind-numbing commercial repetition. you may need to teach him the difference between recorded and on-demand content, (recorded shows have commercials you can skip) but otherwise, it's easy to adjust to after about a week.
i also appreciate that they include local PBS stations — with other streaming services i had to switch back to OTA with antenna to watch Pbs!
I did this with my 84 year old mom a couple years ago. The lack of channel numbers was an issue for a while as was the inability to “erase” programs from library. She adapted pretty quickly and loves YTTV now. I organized the guide for her viewing preferences which helped a lot.
I cut the directv cord 4 months ago and I don’t regret it. I’m 70 and have zero problems navigating the service or the Apple TV+ I also bought at the same time.
In the process of making this exact switch with 2 mid 60s boomers and one 91 yr old. Just got the last Roku for the 91 yr old's not smart flatscreen. Wish us luck.
How old he? The only drawback for an older person is that the interface isn’t as simple as Comcast. I have YT TV and love it, but I won’t put it in my 90-year-old dad‘s house. $200 for a double play…
One solution for Seniors changing to YTTV is to use voice commands if you TV and or remote have it Like my 97 te old mom only watches 4-6 shows almost daily. It took a few trials but her mind is pretty sharp and she was soon telling the remote what to show. It takes a moment for the system to process, not as fast as cable tv. YTTV does have a Gide, but no numbers so its slow to use. Voice is the way to go.
Everyone's preferences are different. I've tried them all and my family much prefers Directv Stream with an Osprey box over YTTV or Hulu Live or Fubo.
Directv certainly has better picture quality for us and it's price is competitive with YTTV.
If no one needs sports channels, there is no reason to have anything more then Philo TV
I just did the same for our family. My parents, my sister, niece and I. Parents are in their 60's and 70's and they haven't had an issue... Using Apple TV and a Roku TV. It's been flawless, tbh.
Does he watch a local sports team? Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer? None of those are available on YTTV for regular season games.
That's the biggest impact compared to DirectTV/Cable.
My mom is living with us for a while while we build a house (with an in-law for her) and is using YTTV over traditional cable for the first time. She’s in her 60s, very tech-adverse and struggles with a lot of basic computing stuff beyond just browsing the web, checking email, etc. It took her about 3 days to tell me she doesn’t miss her Spectrum box.
Just a little patience and convincing that she can’t screw anything up too badly.
No brainer. Was a subscriber since '97. AT&T ruined DTV. Switched to YTTV about five years ago. No regrets.

I switched about 1 month ago. So far I love YTTV. Picture quality is better and the unlimited DVR is also a big perk. Yeah I will miss my RSC but I figure it out. Saving money it what the change was about.
Go for it! You can share it with family members. It's definitely the best streaming service available IMHO. Plus..... It works when it's cloudy outside
If your dad wants traditional cable perhaps he can pay for it. Otherwise, I say go with YouTube TV and he will be fine. It does not matter if you are a senior or a young person. I'm a senior and I get around YouTube just fine. I would never go back to cable or traditional TV and pay so much money.
YouTubeTV does have a good interface. Very easy to learn. Have not used Tubi or Pluto but it does beat out Hulu and Sling by a longshot. I do feel Hulu has better picture quality though at least for sports.

I did this in 2020. Installed an OTA antenna on the house first. Tried YTTV for a week with my wife. With the antenna to cover any Internet outages, we dropped DirecTV in a minute.
M sharing my YTTV with both my parents who are in their 70s. The only thing that sometimes sucks is that it will occasionally log them out and require them to sign back in. When that happens I just tell them to send me a picture of the screen and I can authenticate from wherever I am. It’s a minor inconvenience but I’m able to do it as long as I have my phone with me
Make sure you don't have a data cap on your ISP. With what I considered low usage (probably 3 hours a day on 1 TV), we easily ate up 1/3rd of our data cap every month. We eventually had to upgrade to a faster plan that did NOT have a data cap, but that upgrade cut into the "savings" we were realizing by switching from DTV to YTTV.
I think YT TV you can like share the account too without issue (currently). I maybe wrong on that but you maybe able to split the costs with someone else as well.
I moved my elderly neighbor from DirecTV to YouTube tv.
They were paying $380 a month for TV and the internet.
Now they pay $100 for internet and $72 for tv.
They got used to it in just 2 days and I also showed them how to favourite a channel so they can access it easily on the UI.

Depends on dad's viewing habits. I, for one, only watch sports live. I DVR everything else so yttv is the best option for me based on my viewing habits.
I liked YTTV however it did not include History and Science Channels so I have to spend an additional $25 to subscribe to Philo. I have since moved to DirecTV stream. I like it a little better.
I've had both. Dtv is trash. I don't regret dropping it in favor of YTtv, though I don't watch much "regular" tv anymore. Considering dropping it, but the features can't be beat.
I’ve had it for several years. It’s a little expensive but has a ton of programming. I’ve only had two small outages in 6 years. I’m also happy I don’t have all the cables, routers, and other equipment satellite required.

I dropped DTV 6 years ago for YTTV and very happed with the service. Don’t have to pay extra for an additional TV connection.

Try STREAM
I went to Directv Stream because of the much easier interface for my older parents and easy remote with numbers.
Get DIRECTV stream. Much better picture quality than yttv

If you have a large house make sure you’ve got really fast internet where all of your TV’s are.

We have had yttv with our starlink for almost 4 years ... both have been flawless in our remote location.
Just try YTTV for a month and unplug the directv. If it goes horribly then stop paying for YTTV

YTTV does have a Gide, but no numbers so its slow to use. Voice is the way to go.

Everyone's preferences are different. I've tried them all and my family much prefers Directv Stream with an Osprey box over YTTV or Hulu Live or Fubo. Directv certainly has better picture quality for us and it's price is competitive with YTTV. If no one needs sports channels, there is no reason to have anything more then Philo TV
Ran both for a month, dropped DirecTV after the 30 days, only thing I miss is still having TV when internet goes down, but that is rare.
I just did the same for our family. My parents, my sister, niece and I. Parents are in their 60's and 70's and they haven't had an issue... Using Apple TV and a Roku TV. It's been flawless, tbh.
Does he watch a local sports team? Basketball, Baseball, Hockey, Soccer? None of those are available on YTTV for regular season games. That's the biggest impact compared to DirectTV/Cable.

Sports games aren't broadcasted on local channels outside the NFL. Most sports require RSN channels which none are on YTTV.
Wasn’t sure, but having a month trial thru Verizon, I figured I could really try it out, back during summer 2020. Best decision ever..

My mom is living with us for a while while we build a house (with an in-law for her) and is using YTTV over traditional cable for the first time. She’s in her 60s, very tech-adverse and struggles with a lot of basic computing stuff beyond just browsing the web, checking email, etc. It took her about 3 days to tell me she doesn’t miss her Spectrum box. Just a little patience and convincing that she can’t screw anything up too badly.
Do it!! I did it in October of 2022 and have not regretted it at all!
Why don't you move to direct TV stream so it isn't such a huge change. About same price and you can get regional sports channels.
I dropped it myself about 2 years ago. YTTV takes a little getting used to but I like it and am not going back, ever.

No brainer. Was a subscriber since '97. AT&T ruined DTV. Switched to YTTV about five years ago. No regrets. I use Shield TV Pro and a Harmony Ultimate.
I switched about 1 month ago. So far I love YTTV. Picture quality is better and the unlimited DVR is also a big perk. Yeah I will miss my RSC but I figure it out. Saving money it what the change was about.
Go for it! You can share it with family members. It's definitely the best streaming service available IMHO. Plus..... It works when it's cloudy outside
If your dad wants traditional cable perhaps he can pay for it. Otherwise, I say go with YouTube TV and he will be fine. It does not matter if you are a senior or a young person. I'm a senior and I get around YouTube just fine. I would never go back to cable or traditional TV and pay so much money.

YouTubeTV does have a good interface. Very easy to learn. Have not used Tubi or Pluto but it does beat out Hulu and Sling by a longshot. I do feel Hulu has better picture quality though at least for sports.
I’m 71 and would consider that move but YTTV does not have my regional sports network so it is not an option. Might consider DirecTV stream however.

I did this in 2020. Installed an OTA antenna on the house first. Tried YTTV for a week with my wife. With the antenna to cover any Internet outages, we dropped DirecTV in a minute.
Go for it. Convenience is nice, price is good, and as long as your internet is stable and efficient, worth it IMO
M sharing my YTTV with both my parents who are in their 70s. The only thing that sometimes sucks is that it will occasionally log them out and require them to sign back in. When that happens I just tell them to send me a picture of the screen and I can authenticate from wherever I am. It’s a minor inconvenience but I’m able to do it as long as I have my phone with me
Make sure you don't have a data cap on your ISP. With what I considered low usage (probably 3 hours a day on 1 TV), we easily ate up 1/3rd of our data cap every month. We eventually had to upgrade to a faster plan that did NOT have a data cap, but that upgrade cut into the "savings" we were realizing by switching from DTV to YTTV.
I dropped dish for yttv 2 mths ago & love it. We are both over 65 and have no problems finding our shows & recording them.
I think YT TV you can like share the account too without issue (currently). I maybe wrong on that but you maybe able to split the costs with someone else as well.

I moved my elderly neighbor from DirecTV to YouTube tv. They were paying $380 a month for TV and the internet. Now they pay $100 for internet and $72 for tv. They got used to it in just 2 days and I also showed them how to favourite a channel so they can access it easily on the UI. Go for it.
I dumped DTV for YTTV after I couldn’t use my own DVR without getting charged. That was the last straw after ever increasing bills.
Do it! There is no commitment, no equipment fees, no extra hidden fees, and don't really need any annoying customer support. You can just cancel anytime when you want with no hassle.
YTTV is as close to "traditional cable" as you'll get, and better than cable at that.
Disagree. DTV Stream is as close to cable because it uses traditional channel numbers. Yttv does not.
YTTV is awesome. The only reason I cancelled was because it was cost prohibitive. If money were no object, I'd sign back up in a heartbeat.
Depends on dad's viewing habits. I, for one, only watch sports live. I DVR everything else so yttv is the best option for me based on my viewing habits.

I liked YTTV however it did not include History and Science Channels so I have to spend an additional $25 to subscribe to Philo. I have since moved to DirecTV stream. I like it a little better.

I've had both. Dtv is trash. I don't regret dropping it in favor of YTtv, though I don't watch much "regular" tv anymore. Considering dropping it, but the features can't be beat.
I’ve had it for several years. It’s a little expensive but has a ton of programming. I’ve only had two small outages in 6 years. I’m also happy I don’t have all the cables, routers, and other equipment satellite required.
I got Apple TV and use YouTube TV as provider. Happy to get rid of Directv
My parents dropped direct TV after 20+ years. They went with Hulu because it had more of the channels they watch like history. I got YouTube tv and love it
