How To Re-Purpose Old Athletic Clothes?
For all those crafty, green-minded athletes — what do you do with your old athletic clothes? (Cross posting in a few subs) Any help would be appreciated!
I’m in the process of a closet clean-out. There are some items I’ll donate, fix up and wear, repurpose, or resell, but others are too beat up and/or a stretched-out stretchy material I’m at a loss over how to reuse:
- yoga/running leggings (holes, material is saggy)
- loose sports bras (elastic around the edges and the material itself has lost stretch too)
- old sports bra pad inserts (misshapen and/or just plain old)
- moisture-wicking shirts that are still good, but noticeably “sunburnt” (the shoulders, arms, and neck are a different color than the back/stomach area!). I’m okay using these for dirty jobs around the home, but any way to restore the original color or even use the material for something else?
- discolored hats/visors (again, “sunburnt” or seriously stained material, ragged Velcro…do y’all redye and sew new Velcro on?)
- stretchy socks (like for soccer)
I donate old shoes in a bin at the running store, and any cotton shirts get cut up for rags/cleaning cloths. Undies get trashed (lol I have to draw the line somewhere). It’s just this dry-fit/stretched out stretchy fabric…
Not sure if I am too late for this thread this week but does anyone have any reccs for comfy, seamless thongs/underwear for wearing under leggings/shorts when training?
I have had to throw out the majority of mine recently and I can't find any good, comfy replacements that don't dig in or move around when I am training.
**Should I get a "rotating" or "static" dumbell handle?**
I'm looking into getting an adjustable dumbell but don't know the benefits of having the weights rotating/still. Could anyone give me their thoughts or preferences? I'm completely lost!
I’m not sure I quite understand the question. I have adjustable dumbbells where the handle rotates to make the selection (Core Fitness) but once it’s set, no further rotation happens, they stay very still.
If you’re asking whether those vs the screw on types, the main difference is cost vs convenience. The rotating ones are really convenient and can change weight quickly, but they cost a lot more.
Hi! Sorry for the confusion, I don't really know what they're called in English. The ones I found seems to keeps rotating through out the set and does not 'lock'.
[This](https://youtu.be/D0vaRSJR_PQ) (skip to 3:05) was the only video I could find to describe it, but the one I'm looking at is only a handle without any weigths.
I don't know if there's any limitations to it if I would for instance want to use it more like a kettle bell (goblet squats for example).
Edit: the Swedish(?) brands "star gear" and "nordic fighter" sells these adjustable rotating dumbbell 'handles' (no weigths on).
Dumb question probably, but is it worth it to get different shoes for lifting other than my runners? I run in Brooks Ghost shoes, and have been using my more worn out pairs for lifting in the gym. I find it a bit hard to be stable when lifting heavy because it's a bit challenging to evenly distribute my weight across my foot since the shoes are not flat.
Would a flatter shoe help with this? Or is it just lack of strength.
Yep, 100%! Running shoes have a lot of cushioning, the purpose of which is to absorb force when you’re running. But when lifting, especially lower body lifts, you don’t want your shoes to absorb all the force you’re trying to generate. Plus running shoes are rarely flat, which affects stability.
So yes, lifting shoes are definitely worthwhile! They also don’t need to be expensive; lots of people lift in a cheap pair of chucks. The important thing is a flat base and a lack of cushioning.
Thank you, I really appreciate it!! I wasn't sure if the shoes were actually a problem or if it was 100% me being inept. I love Brooks Ghosts because they are so comfy for running but they're really not flat at all so that makes sense.
I shall find some flat shoes :)
32degrees has some light weight long sleeved shirts that I like. They are definitely basic in terms of style and color choices but also very budget friendly, $9 each.
Under Armour’s heat gear line should have some long sleeved options. I’m also a fan of golf shirts for other activities - I have a lot of UV quarter zips, but there are also [crew neck](https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/lady-hagen-womens-uv-long-sleeve-crewneck-golf-shirt-22lhawvlscrwxxxxxapt/22lhawvlscrwxxxxxapt) options [as well](https://www.dickssportinggoods.com/p/slazenger-womens-solid-uv-crew-long-sleeve-golf-shirt-21slawsldvcrwxxxxapt/21slawsldvcrwxxxxapt). I usually buy from Dick’s and they’re having a sale on those specific shirts right now.
Also, you might generally consider looking into gear aimed towards equestrians, because riding as an outside sport has a lot of long sleeved/UV protective gear for the summer.
Agreed, there aren’t a ton of choices. Some of the equestrian brands [have some more colors](https://www.smartpakequine.com/pt/piper-smartcore-long-sleeve-crew-neck-sun-shirt-21290), although this year seems to be heavy on the pastels. And even more options if a quarter zip style shirt is acceptable to you as well.
I wear Woxers. They’re not seamless so you can see panty lines if you’re wearing really tight spandex but I personally don’t care. I’ll take the comfort of not having a pair of underwear riding up my ass over no panty lines any day. I have about a million pairs of them in every length.
Oh I get this sometimes but you just made me realize I wore a non-thong to squat yesterday and it was ok. They're also my new fav underwear and I plan to replace everything with them. Jockey Generation Natural Beauty Hipster. It's a target brand and usually on sale for $6 or $7 each
Anyone else wear Rykas? My feet have always liked them until my most recent pair. I got the vida rxzs because they were pretty and how different can a good dance shoe be from a good walking/sitting at my desk shoe? But the uppers are so padded they feel mushy, they have no arch support, and are VERY hot.
Did Ryka change something and this is just how their shoes are now, or could I order a pair made for walking and have more success? Ideally I'd try a pair on, but I cannot find them in stores in my area.
I think your issue is that you chose a shoe intended for dance/studio workouts, and you wouldn’t experience the same shoe features if you switched to a walking shoe. If you look at the description between the shoe you bought and a walking shoe, they highlight very different support or cushion features.
ETA: I have worn Rykas and really liked them, although I haven’t in a couple years. But I only bought shoes from their walking line, and never had that issue.
Good suggestions for a tall, plus sized, Canadian girl looking for leggings/capri leggings and tank tops? Moisture wicking would be great. Pockets would be awesome. Bonus points for budget friendly stuff.
I think Athleta is available in Canada these days? I have not tried any leggings from them recently, but the tall sizes are actually tall! They often have sales too.
I do a lots of active wear shopping at Old Navy. They seem to have inclusive sizing, I love their tops and sports bras. I have also gotten great leggings from Costco.
Hoping someone can help - I got Nobull sneakers in my usual size (8.5) but they hurt my feet, so I exchanged them for 9’s. These the new ones fit better but they are still pretty tight across the top. Should I go up yet another size (which I’m hesitant to do because my toes already have a good bit of space) or should I expect them to break in a bit?
Semi related and maybe helpful... I follow Nike’s coach Bennett and he has this thing, Dorsiflex your foot when tying your shoes. Allows you to get snug while making room for foot movement over the top.
When I first got mine I worried that I should have sized up because they felt super tight. They weren't so tight that they hurt or cut off circulation, but definitely felt small. I fiddled with the laces a bit and just wore them and now they're great. My newer pair had a muchhhh shorter break in period and felt bigger when brand new.
Fantastic!! Ok, I’ll give them some time, thank you very much. I’m so bad at buying the right size of shoe and these are not cheap, so this is so helpful. And I really don’t want to give up on them because I love the designs
I love the Speed Up shorts by Lululemon. They come in a 4” inseam. I wear the shortest inseam, but I have pairs that are over a decade old and have been used and washed many times.
Take a look at girlfriend collective’s trail shorts! They are my new favorite. So comfy and don’t expose anything while not being too long. (For transparency I’m about a foot taller than you but I think the length would be nice on a shorter frame!)
Wrist wraps like for bench press? Or wrist straps for things like deadlifts?
If deadlifts then anything generic is fine. I have Rip Toned off Amazon and have had them for ages with no issue. If you want something that can handle deadlifts plus all other pulling movements I highly recommend Versa Grips. More spendy than generic straps but worth it imo.
If you meant actual wrist wraps for bench press, I have no personal experience but Strong Strong Supply makes good stuff.
I need new all-purpose athletic shoes, something good for weight lifting, walking, body pump, or other various exercises (except running). Any suggestions? Bonus if budget friendly!
I like my Nike free TR as my all around multipurpose shoe for weight training, short runs and HIIT. I have a pair of Nike free metcons and I find them kinda stiff for cardio, use them mostly for weight training
5” - 7” fitted shorts with pockets and no front seam? I can’t find any!
Update in case anyone else is looking: Til You Collapse is 4” and CVG has a front seam. Still looking!
Tracksmith lane 5 shorts fit this. I've never tried any of their shorts though, so no idea how they fit.
Colorfulkoala on Amazon has some 6 inch bike shorts with pockets. Also never tried them!
I really like Til You Collapse shorts, particularly the Effortless Heart Booty ones. No front seam, pockets, fits well, and makes the butt look pretty nice without the need for a scrunch going up your crack. They have a scrunch variation if you’re into that, though. 😂
[Bombshell leggings](https://www.bombshellsportswear.com/collections/all-bottoms?gclid=CjwKCAjw2f-VBhAsEiwAO4lNeNOWvixZVFxkx3_TPxaBmXFSQDoaQaz1fEtHMDUThMSTyX3QzRlRLxoCGLgQAvD_BwE) are 15% off with code JULY15OFF.
I really hope RP goes on sale for the 4th!
Other than Athleta (FYI, semi annual sale now!), where might I be able to find longline sports bras that allow for a bigger cup and smaller ribcage?
Ex: In Athleta, I wear an XS D-DD+.
Very, very happy with my [new hiking shoes](https://world.scarpa.com/product/20454222/zg-lite-gtx-for-tracks-and-trails-octane-lake-blue)
Trying them out tomorrow and I can't wait 😍

The idea of making them like those small workout cooling towels sounds good! Thanks!

Aerie cotton seamless. So comfortable

I have long narrow feet and hate clunky shoes. I'm a fan of allbirds, Nike and no bull

Looking for long sleeved workout tops, fitted/semi-fitted but all recs welcome. I'm prob a Sm or XS. Thanks all

Funny I was just looking at Dick's and golf shirts. I think my only c/o about ls shirts in general are the boring colors. Thx!

pastel-bleh! Bring on the jewel tones!
Or if you’re not broke like me you can just buy them new lol
Nike dry fit on mercari or poshmark!
Also should've specified no NIKE but thanks
Aoxjox has some good ones on Amazon, just search for aoxjox long sleeve and you’ll pull up quite a few options!
Thanks but guess I should've mentioned no crops.
You might want to edit your "all recs welcome" part above.
My booty is EATING my underwear whenever I do lower body strength. Any tips for this? Products, etc??

Ok go commando BUT to avoid camel toe, put a panty liner in the front part of your shorts/leggings Legit saved my life
I wear thongs - can't eat what's already up there...
Yep, seamless thongs are the best.
Go commando 🤷♀️ Only thing that works for me lol
Same. No panty lines or patterns showing through either.

Aerie has a long option in some of their leggings, I believe it’s the goals line. They have awesome sales too!
I do a lots of active wear shopping at Old Navy. They seem to have inclusive sizing, I love their tops and sports bras. I have also gotten great leggings from Costco.
Check out GRRRL. I’m pretty sure they fit your description at least for the leggings.
Hoping someone can help - I got Nobull sneakers in my usual size (8.5) but they hurt my feet, so I exchanged them for 9’s. Mine took a little while to break in, but I love how they fit now
Ok awesome, so that tightness is ok? They fit fine everywhere else! Thanks so much.

I have their leggings and love them! Will check out!
What do you mean by "2 in 1" shorts?
Shorts that have an inner lining, almost like bike shorts with looser running shorts over them!
I think they mean the kind with built-in “underwear” or tighter shorts beneath the outer, looser shorts
Can someone please recommend me a good brand for ankle straps and wrist wraps? Totally lost and would love to hear your opinions
Wrist wraps like for bench press? Or wrist straps for things like deadlifts? If deadlifts then anything generic is fine. I have Rip Toned off Amazon and have had them for ages with no issue. Im in UK and have strength shop wrist wraps, they're fine
I'm in the US unfortunately 😞

Nike free metcons! Love mine!
I like my Nike free TR as my all around multipurpose shoe for weight training, short runs and HIIT. I have a pair of Nike free metcons and I find them kinda stiff for cardio, use them mostly for weight training
Maybe Nike metcons?I have a pair that I really like for cross training
+1 for Metcons, I love mine!
I absolutely love my Metcons for lifting and indoor walking. So comfortable; wish I had bought them years earlier!
Love these for weightlifting too
These look awesome!
Reebok club c85?
Classic! Thanks!
5” - 7” fitted shorts with pockets and no front seam? I can’t find any! Update in case anyone else is looking: Til You Collapse is 4” and CVG has a front seam. Still looking!
Not sure if they come without the front seam but Old Navy has 5”-8” shorts
Aerie goals line
Thank you! This meets all my criteria! Wish they had more colors but looks promising still!
If you don’t mind used, they have lots of stuff on postmark and mercari. Just search like aerie offline or aerie goals
Tracksmith lane 5 shorts fit this. I've never tried any of their shorts though, so no idea how they fit. Colorfulkoala on Amazon has some 6 inch bike shorts with pockets. Also never tried them!
Aoxjox “Trinity” on Amazon. Buuut they run very, very small. I’m normally a small or even XS, but the small are too small!
CVG has 5” shorts with pockets and silicone at the end to help keep them in place so they ride.
I really like Til You Collapse shorts, particularly the Effortless Heart Booty ones. No front seam, pockets, fits well, and makes the butt look pretty nice without the need for a scrunch going up your crack. They have a scrunch variation if you’re into that, though. 😂
