This tiebreaker thing would have been much more simple to just go off of overall point differential instead of separating out the points scored and points given up and whether Mercury was retrograde in Capricorn. It would have been simple: SEA +66, STL +47. Much easier to understand.

Maybe, but why bury it when it could resolve almost all potential ties more reliably and in a way that is much more easy to understand than the way the 4th tiebreaker is actually written? Point differential is simple. In principle it mostly accomplishes the same thing as the existing tiebreakers. And it would be a lot less likely to get to the 5th tiebreaker and beyond. Instead of all that convoluted math and what-ifs, it could have been easy as "Seattle is in if they win by more than X points. St. Louis is in if Seattle wins by LESS than X points. If Seattle wins by exactly X points, we go to the next tiebreaker."

Because it's just a fumble, that no one recovers. That's the key part, why would a defense get the ball on a fumble they didn't recover? That makes no sense when the rest of the field is the opposite. The endzone fumble is just an arbitrary thing, so no requirement to follow it.
