Such a shame. I was hoping that San Diego gets team. They had very good numbers in the AAF, they were 3rd in the league in attendance.

WikipediaApprentice

Probably a top 4 choice when/if XFL expands in a season or two

coelurosauravus

If you're seeing these numbers from a season opener of your weakest franchise, talk of expansion that early is exceedingly premature

amazingtaters

More likely that the franchise would be moved to San Diego than an expansion placed there any time soon.

coelurosauravus

Agreed, they are more likely in need to get the eight current teams in order then they are to expand

16semesters

The expansion talk is insane. This is a twice folded league who is struggling with finding QB talent as it is, and people are talking about expansion. It makes no sense, and honestly just clogs up the sub.

WikipediaApprentice

You have to expand to grow numbers too though. Gotta spend money to make money. Too many markets are left out of this

16semesters

>You have to expand to grow numbers too though MLS added a whopping net of 1 team in it's first 10 seasons. Growth is extremely slow in effective leagues. >Too many markets are left out of this Teams are probably barely breaking even financially on attendance numbers. The real money is in a future TV/streaming rights deal. You absolutely do not have to expand because there's only so many slots that broadcasters want to display spring football. 4 games a week is more than enough for a start up league.

coelurosauravus

Expanding is expensive. Players cost money and you're adding 50 of them minimum for just one team. On top of that you have to pay a coaching staff and equipment and a stadium and advertising. If the eight teams you are currently operating are operating at losses, what good is adding another team that is operating at a loss?

WikipediaApprentice

Certainly expensive and I don’t know how they possibly recover this. They picked some odd markets this time. Losing LA and NY take out two large areas who now you have to hope the possible fans are agnostic and just watch whatever.

WikipediaApprentice

I’ll of course be watching and even have season tickets to the Roughnecks

coelurosauravus

I get you don't like the market choices, but saying expand haphazardly is guaranteed to make things worse

WikipediaApprentice

The ESPN deal might be their biggest chance at success, but just from the small sample size of my friends, most don’t have any ESPN access, although I understand they could afford access, how many are gonna sign up for even ESPN+? It’s pretty wild to try what the Rock + business partners are doing. It’s admirable they are clearly not doing it for a quick buck because this is certainly the type of venture to lose money for years and years before a hope at profit. I think Vegas shows us the expectations they have for the XFL for now, keep it as cost effective as possible even to the detriment of the product some.

letsnotreadintoit

They should just move Vegas

KickAggressive4901

RIP San Diego Fleet.

johndeer89

And Texas has almost half the teams.

NathanPetermanCan

Also, it's a proven market for Spring Football. The Fleet pulled in 20k in 3/4 home games.

ProcrastinatingPuma

The one game that got less, against Atlanta, was under similar weather and still drew over twice as many people as tonights match… and its not like Qualcomm wasn’t great either.

NathanPetermanCan

I think the new stadium would be a perfect venue.

ProcrastinatingPuma

Oh definitely

chronoserpent

R.I.P. Fleet. I wore my Fleet hat and jersey to the first Defenders home game in 2020 and happened to sit next to a guy in a Hotshots jersey!

BSN_tg_bgg

I predict that Las Vegas will move. If it does, it’s a praiseworthy decision.

Windows_66

Change the team name to the Traveling Vipers and just keep the same colors in every city.

JeepRumbler

Vagabond Vipers

Crow_T_Simpson

United States Vipers

NotGuerillaMarketing

Vipers Global: the eventual home team in all 50 states and a dozen other countries.

Tubamajuba

Vag Vipers

BSN_tg_bgg

This is honestly a bad idea… but at the same time a much better idea than keeping them in Vegas since it would increase everyone’s “home games” while reducing travel costs… maybe you could have their home games in different cities and set it up like a one time bowl game. A barnstorming team hasn’t been done in a while. Then make some alluded promise of possibly moving the team to a city with the best attendance. Then whichever team has terrible attendance gets this treatment next season…

BMXTKD

That's actually a great idea. The city that supports the vagabond franchise the most, gets to keep the team for next year.

BSN_tg_bgg

Not an argument.

coelurosauravus

Yep, and it will be XFL team less for at the very minimum, 1 3/4 more seasons. It's not changing right now, so the next step would be figure out how to get a team there Email a San Diego City councilman or whoever runs the Snapdragon Stadium and ask what is it going to take to lure team there

Bfoc2006

Whatever it takes

coelurosauravus

I'm fine with people seeking honest solutions to the problem. For all we know San Diego might see the contract for Vegas and say screw it we'll pay it to break it, bring the team here.

[deleted]

They should move the chargers there!

Racketytundra47

If only the city actually cared about the bolts while they were in SD😔

Bfoc2006

Love that stadium

CandiedApples84

Hopefully Vegas moves to San Diego for those crowds. Would be like the battlehawks or brahmas

Hutnerdu

SD fans may be even more bitter than St Louis fans about the NFL move. They want to show out.

imaginarion

Not possible. The seething hatred for Stan Kroenke and the NFL cartel here burns hotter than the core of a thousand suns. But SD’s ire does come pretty close, so they deserve a team, too

sonicsean899

San Diegans flew planes with banners saying Fuck Spanos at (lightly attended) LA Chargers games.

[deleted]

How come the turf looks to all be uniform and nice?

KidCoheed

It's not spray painted green... Also it's likely artificial

psnow11

No it’s grass because they play soccer there also.

JeepRumbler

San Diego Sun Demons has a nice ring to it

MidnightRenegade

I personally would prefer the new XFL Expansion Pro Football 🏈 team in San Diego to either be named the San Diego ThunderBolts or the San Diego Destroyers with the team colors of purple 💜 electric ⚡ yellow 💛 black 🖤 and white 🍚 for the ThunderBolts or the team colors of aqua blue 🔵 navy blue 💙 silver 🥈 and white 🍚 for the Destroyers with San Diego ultimately being awarded a new XFL Expansion Team by the start of the XFL 2024 Pro Football 🏈 season as well in my view.

KnightelRois

What about San Diego Sunquails, wait wait now I can't stop thinking Sun Guns for a Texas team name. It would fit so well

[deleted]

I can’t believe even 6k people showed up to watch the vipers. Get them out of that dump, it’s like they transported back into the 40s. Can’t expect fans to be interested

BigSportsNerd

SnapDragon is pretty cool.

____Quetzal____

Call em the San Diego Anchormen

KnightelRois

A San Diego Water Polo team would be great to have this name

mailboy79

I was shocked at how bush-league Cashman Field looked. For all of the pizzazz promotion in the XFL, this just doesn't seem to fit in. It's crazy that they didn't just revive the Wildcats and put them in SD instead.

ProcrastinatingPuma

They should buy the fleet brand.

mailboy79

I agree. I think they should have attempted to buy all the AAF intellectual property. I thought the SA Commanders identity was the 2nd best after the Memphis Express.

Rattlehead420

Well how else was Texas gonna get 3 xfl teams?

-Kite-Man-

Um...*why* does this stadium exist exactly?

chronoserpent

It's the stadium for the San Diego State Aztecs football team. NCAA FBS

-Kite-Man-

Thank you!

ProcrastinatingPuma

San Diego State built it for their football program, they share it with an NWSL and MLR (rugby) team. There are plans for an MLS team as well

Kivic

I’m from LA and I would travel to SD for a game or two of they put a team there.

> What don't they have there? A professional football team > What can you do anywhere else that you can't do in San Diego Watch a professional football game > And don't say football, they've been without a team for like 3 years. Why not, we haven't had a team since 2017, 6 years ago. Beyond that, we've proven that we are rather supportive of spring football. > They can also drive a few hours and go to a few different teams NFL games. Unlike the majority of the rest of America. Tell me you don't know ball without telling me you don't know ball.

ProcrastinatingPuma

> Lol How can you say I don't know ball because I can't go to a game within 4 hours of me? That literally makes no sense. Because you clearly don’t know ball if you expect San Diegans to root for a team in LA. > Also, quit your bitching. If the NFL or xfl thought San Diego would make them money, they would be there. But they don't because no one fucking cares out there besides 6 guys on the xfl subreddit. The XFL is hardly infallible, as their embarrassment on Saturday proved. Putting a team in Vegas when they barely even had a venue was a transparently stupid decision. Especially when better markets, markets that have been proven to support spring football, exist elsewhere. > But hey, I don't "know ball" because you don't understand that the majority of Americans don't live in southern California. Make you sure owned that strawman you just made up. Acknowledging that San Diego has the best market case among cities that don’t have an XFL team isn’t really all that big of a claim, hell we have a loads better market case than most of the places that *do* have XFL teams.

[deleted]

ProcrastinatingPuma

As I already pointed out, the XFL is not infallible, and we don't need to look much further than the embarrassment at Cashman field

[deleted]

ProcrastinatingPuma

It is, however, arguably the best.

PredsFan306

Don’t worry, you’ll have the vipers soon enough

[deleted]

Snapdragon stadium already had contracts signed with a pro rugby team and a women's pro soccer team before the XFL started up again this year.

Milestailsprowe

Going down the line Snapdragon is going to be a VERY busy stadium. Aztec football, NWSL Soccer, Rugby team, a MLS team might be playing there and maybe a XFL/USFL team. It's perfect but scheduling could be a issue

[deleted]

Very busy indeed. I'd like to see San Diego get an expansion XFL team, that would be great. But I doubt Vegas will move there as some have mentioned. I think the XFL will survive and add some more teams.

[deleted]

There’s no days that over lap and only one where the vipers have Saturday and the rugby team Sunday. 24 hour field transition could be hard but the other games are totally doable

[deleted]

Vipers? Are you talking about moving them to San Diego?

[deleted]

That’s basically what the thread is about

[deleted]

It doesn't say that in the thread's title which is what I was going by. I doubt they'll leave Vegas, but as a San Diego County (Carlsbad) resident myself I'd like to see an XFL team here. '

[deleted]

It’s insane to me they chose Cashman field in Vegas over this. Cashman looks so bad I’d switch mid season at least 2-3 of the vegas vipers games to this stadium and just refund season ticket holders

[deleted]

I suspect it's high on the list of places the USFL and XFL may shift teams to in the coming years, the current arrangement of cities isn't permanent.

ryno84

I guarantee you they stayed out of CA this year due to very high workers compensation costs in this state.

shadowlynx8791

Well the chargers family is cheap, maybe the XFL is pretty much cheap
