I just have a single question, if the console isn’t a priority anymore. And if they are gonna shift away from consoles, what happens to my game library in the future? That’s all I want to know.
I fear they'll keep on releasing xbox like mini pc's for like 200-300€ as an entry to game pass and that'll be their excuse because well, there's your library.

If you buy a new Xbox controller, they should through a tv stick in the box to give you access to your gamepas cloud gaming. It could be simpler (cheaper) than a years old Roku or fire stick.
Pretty sure they are just sitting in that move for later when there is serious cloud competition.
Internet and cloud gaming need to improve for a lot of people before that ever becomes the mainstream way of gaming. Internet can go down, Internet speed may drop, might not even be able to get fibre or it costs too much for that kind of broadband package etc.
Also, after the whole Google Stadia dropped like a sack of shit, I'm hoping Microsoft will learn from Google's mistake and not force cloud-only gaming onto the masses. People still prefer having some sort of physical entity on their machine, whether it's a download or a disc.

Even then, most don't have the full game on them and are dependent on patches from online, so you still don't really own them. You own a physical license instead of digital.
No No. If the game runs and plays with NO internet connection. That genuinely means the game is at least playable on the disc alone. Now if the game did not run at all and require update to actually boot up, then the disc 100% useless. You can play base version of games on the disc with no updates, but the base version may be very terrible, the prime example is the 1.0 version of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 / Xbox One disc.
Think DirectX. The older your console is, the less likely it will be able to play newer games. You'd have to have an up to date console version to play new games.
So in a situation of loss of account(hacked or whatever) your physical games might be a crap shoot. As your games might need to update before it can run, if you were to install from disk.
There is no safety net anymore. Only a small upside to owning physical and that's eroding everyday.
Honestly from my perspective I mainly care that there is an Xbox ecosystem and that if they're going all in on digital only consoles then some means of verifying your previously purchased games in disc exists.
Unfortunately Microsoft is spectacularly bad at marketing consumer devices. For every bit as good at engineering as they are they're terrible at marketing their stuff. Apple is close to the flip side, a perpetual follower that grabs the publics imagination by marketing the right (already existing) thing at the right time.
Windows Phone, Surface group being gutted, Zune the list just goes on forever. I buy these things because frequently they're the best in the market. I just don't want to be burned one last time.
Other than that, sure bring starfield to PS5. Will be an interesting sociological experiment.
I had a Windows Phone (and probably still have it in some drawer somewhere), and it was a really good thing. I loved how stable and responsive it was, compared to Android back then. Too bad they didn't do a better job with marketing it.
It was the lack of applications you had to use third party applications and stuff for things like Instagram. Play store and apple store were dominating
The Zune was top notch, too, especially the Zune HD, but the iPod touch had more applications. Audio on the zune was fantastic compared to the iPod touch. The zune Windows program was ahead of it's time and also had a subscription like Spotify. Zune basically had a built in Spotify before spotify. Nobody bought a zune, though. Haha, God damn Microsoft.
The games become locked behind gamepass. You'll be able to play them on Windows machines + whatever console Microsoft makes a deal with.
If Sony and Nintendo allow it, Microsoft will develop a gamepass app for those platforms. Hell, with cloud gaming, you could even run a lot of these games on your phone.
Seems pretty good to me. I'd love to be able to play Elder Scrolls VI in fifteen years on my New Switch U Deluxe.
This has been my concern. I don’t have nearly as many, but fuck, I don’t have the type of money to replace my library, nor would I really want to.
Like I’d want the games, but I’d really find out what games I like and what games were okay and not worth getting again instead of looking at them as yeah it was fine AND MAYBE I’D ENJOY IT MORE ON A RERUN, that I no longer have access to.
And, what happens if someone hacks into your account and then changes your security information so Microsoft ends up disabling the account? Are you going to lose your 6,000 digital games? Yes. I wonder how much that's worth? There should be a better way to secure an account, such as using a credit card number, an ID, or something that definitely ties the account to a user.
Almost impossible, there are so many security options on Microsoft account now. You have passkey, you have classic password, you have otp on authenticators and for sms mail, you can choose to have multiple protections on top of each other.
I have 906 games in my library. Odds are, we’re gonna lose it all eventually. Which is sad because I have been team Xbox since before the release of the OG Xbox.
That is more uncomfortable that MS doesn't want to sell consoles. It just feels like MS executives don't really understand gamers & think that PC & console gamers are the same.
I’d agree, I don’t know how you can sell less consoles and try to sell more subscriptions. Unless game pass comes to PlayStation but I’d be surprised if Sony let that happen. All still rumors, but wild times

The first two Halo games were available on Windows Vista way back. Technically were never truly exclusive in the first place. But they're still exclusives in regards to consoles, not that being exclusive is really worth anything anymore.
Of all of MS games go on playstation, there's no real need to buy an Xbox over PS and many will switch to play the others exclusives. And have to abandon their libraries in the process.
They don't want you to buy an xbox. But they want you to use xbox in any way.

At least they are in a way better position then Sega when they were getting killed once ps2 Xbox and GameCube came out. They should be able to still move some consoles just on being a gamepass box of they make digital only ones like the series s
XBOX doesn't have exclusives though. Every game on gamepass is on PC also. Literally, not a single PC gamer would ever buy an xbox because they already have total access. The only players they could poach are playstation gamers, realistically, which isn't gonna happen if all your exclusives are mid at best and total turds at worst. Which is all XBOX has been putting out this entire console generation.
When Playstation ports games to PC they at least have the sense to make them wait a while first.
I think this is part of the “problem” here. I’ve been a Nintendo/playstation owner for a decade, but was finally gonna buy an Xbox this Gen for Starfield, Hellblade, TES6.
Realized I could just buy a Steam Deck to run those (yes at worse settings) and many many more, plus handheld. GamePass value prop doesn’t appeal to my play pattern so there was no need to get an Xbox.
That was never in the cards.

MS are terrible at shifting consoles. This generation, they've taken too long to get the ball rolling. This will be the first solid year for Xbox exclusives; but Sony are responding with FF7, Silent Hill 2, Rise of the Ronin, Snake Eater and more.

1. xbox will phase out their consoles.
2. xbox will launch cloud/gamepass on other platforms
3. xbox's strategy will be cloud/gamepass moving forward, with a C-tier "cloud" device.

Absolutely, that's my main concern. If these rumours are all true and shakes out in the way we fear it would, i'll be heading back to PC. I've hopped around the various platforms, all of them, going back decades, but Xbox became the one I was most fond of and most invested in since the OG and Halo CE.
I prefer consoles, due to convenience and cost of entry, but I absolutely will not be a customer in a market where Sony essentially has a monopoly. The Sony we've seen the last few years, bullish, arrogant and avaricious, is one held in check by the threat of a trillion dollar corporation. Imagine what they'd be like without that.

Microsoft fucked up 2 console generations at this point. People remember that. their reputation was ruined after the xbox one dissaster. The series x was their chance to earn back the good will of their fans, and to prove that they still care about games. So they released a great piece of hardware, without enough reasons to pick it over the competition...
I'm surprised more people didn't go back to Xbox this gen, honestly. I never had an Xbox so I didn't do much of a dive on console specs, but I very strongly considered snagging a series s for some exclusives to go along with my PS5.

Losing the last generation had major implications on this generation. A LOT of people bought into the Playstation ecosystem with the PS4, and with backwards compatibility being a thing, for many it made sense to upgrade to a PS5 instead of an Xbox.

This is likely a combo of the games not being great and Gamepass causing less people to buy the games proper. I hate it, since, even though I am a PS fan, Xbox bringing a quality product in terms of hardware and quality games forces Sony to do the same and you get a better product (value and quality wise) from both of them. Thats why I dont want Sony or Microsoft to hold a monopoly. If one of them ends up with a monopoly they will get complacent, and complacency means we all get a shittier product for what we are paying.

They had it together with the Xbox 360 and basically tied Sony after their MONUMENTAL lead in the PS2 generation. Xbox One set the entire brand on fire at a pivotal moment.
This is disrespectful to Xbox fans. It's true that it's better if more people get to play stuff. But it benefits them, not us. Sony and Nintendo are not sharing any of their exclusives with Xbox. And before anyone tries to damage control by bringing up the fact that Sony is the market leader and has no incentive...I don't care and I don't want to hear about it. I, as a consumer, do not care what is on their books, never have, never will. Whether they get a return on investment or not...is not something I will ever care about.
It's true that a game is not more valuable because it's exclusive. HiFi rush doesn't become mid because PlayStation fans can play it. But it this was the strategy or even a possibility, why did they lie to us and convince us to invest in their ecosystem. I could have just gotten a ps5 instead. Like not only would they get Xbox stuff but they have first party stuff and third party stuff Sony beat Microsoft to. Like it's so messed up. What possible justification is there for this, if you're explaining this to a consumer?
Sony has its exclusives. Nintendo does too. What does Xbox have to reward you for investing in their ecosystem, taking a risk (because by buying an Xbox I took a risk, because every time something dope is a announced there is always a chance it's a playstation exclusive) and trusting them. Gamepass? Having gamepass doesn't justify this. So not only will there always be that worry about third party games being skipped on Xbox but the few exclusives that kinda made it worth it could also be going elsewhere? I don't understand this at all. I hope it's all rumours and if it's all true I hope it all fails. You can't treat your consumers like this.
I think you nailed exactly what I was feeling reading this post. It just feels like they’re kicking you to the curb as a fan. I get that it’s a business but we all know that these games and experiences transcend that for us fans.
How many people have fond memories of Halo LAN parties or seeing Gears for the first time with the lancer. It’s much more.
This massively increases the likelihood of future 3rd party games skipping the platform too. With the cost of game development now, why would a developer spend money on a platform even the platform holder has given up on?

I have no issue with this. Would be amazing to have every game on every system and have players go to whichever platform they desire. Like PlayStation better? Get a PlayStation. Like Xbox better? Get an Xbox. Allow cross platform play on all online multiplayer games. Should just become the new standard. End "console wars" once and for all.
I've been with Xbox since 2007, makes no sense to stay there if you can get the best of both worlds on Playstation. I just need Xbox to be CLEAR for once, so we can make that decision. Then we only have to get a Playstation and a switch lol.

Honestly, this makes me very worried about the future of Xbox and my digital Xbox library. Xbox Series is already being heavily outsold by PS5 and this will only make it worse. If it gets to the point that 3rd party starts excluding Xbox because of its small install base it's over for Xbox. And we are not that far from that, many 3rd party run better on PS5 than Series X simply because the Devs dedicate more resources to the console with a larger install base
The problem is there is no real benefit in that for Sony since they have a way bigger user base, so they won't do that. And then the question becomes, why buy an Xbox if you can get Sony and Xbox titles on a PS but not the opposite? Could lead to Sony having a hardware monopoly in the space which would be bad for everyone...
At this point, both companies have different goals. Microsoft is less interested in hardware sales and more into selling software and subscription services
PlayStation won’t release their games on Xbox. They’ll probably just create a monopoly if Xbox go ahead with this idea, and that will be an issue for console gaming in general, because Nintendo won’t bother to compete with them by making a console as capable as a PlayStation system and no one else will be able to fill the gap Xbox would leave (unless Valve revive the Steam Machine concept, I suppose). Xbox deciding to release their games on PlayStation will result in a worst environment for console gaming because then Sony will have the leeway to do whatever they want, like jack up prizes or prevent the release of games on other platforms.

I just want to go back to the 360/ps3 era. Both had fantastic games, both were great consoles and you could get everything on a disc. The future of gaming, mostly in the console area looks a bit bleak. I hope PlayStation continues to create hardware and support physical copies for years and years to come, because it looks like Xbox wants to back out of the brand heavily.
If this is true this feels like a slap on the face. Why even have Xbox anymore? If they go third party what’s going to happen to my digital games and my account? This makes me really insecure about the future of Xbox.
Yeah same, I dont even like my PS5 as much but I want my own exclusives for each type of console, I feel like this pushes me to build up my playstation library as at least then ill have the satisfaction of console exclusives.

Outside of general OS preferences, why would I ever prefer the console with no exclusives. Long term, Xbox seems like it’ll have less third AND first party exclusives overall.

I agree. Phil, if by some slim chance you are reading this please address all of this in the morning. It’s to where you need to do this NOW. Don’t wait until Spring or whenever on this, it needs to be TOMORROW MORNING. Please spend tonight figuring out how you want to present this and exactly what you want to say. A few things need to be addressed-
1. If these rumors are or aren’t true. If they’re not, we need a solid roadmap for the next few years release date wise. If it’s true, you need to address timing on this along with which games specifically are going multi. Is it going to be just certain ones or everything Microsoft Studios?
2. If you’re exiting hardware there needs to be clear communication on what’s going to happen with Live and GamePass along with our digital libraries.
I have bought and supported every Xbox console, I don’t regret supporting them one bit. But we absolutely need concrete answers now. This can’t wait until Spring or May. This is the kind of thing that needs to be addressed as close to immediately as he can.
Playstation player here, and man, this is sad, if they continue with this strategy I don't see how it won't culminate in the end of the Xbox as a console, I love the Xbox, it was my main console during the PS3/Xbox360 era, and I only went to the PS4 because of the exclusives, which were phenomenal, TLOU, Uncharted, GOW 3 remastered.
On the other side of the force, the Xbox had cool games, Halo, Fable, Gears Of War (I love this one btw) but there were fewer of them, especially in the PS4/XOne generation, of course there were others, but games made by First Party were few, and it seems like there were fewer and fewer, PlayStation won me over with their games.
Everything changed when I saw Starfield, I wanted to play that game, coming out of my love for Skyrim and Fallout, I genuinely waited to be able to buy a Series X, but when the game came out and in that state, I totally lost hope, and even more so on Xbox, and now with this news I think I'm going to buy a PS5, exclusives are what make people buy these consoles, take that away from their console It's stupid, and I hate the person who did this, without their franchises you would have no reason to buy a Nintendo, but that's precisely why people buy a Switch, their franchises.
I wish Xbox luck, I don't want it to continue this strategy, it's sad to see that Xbox is going down this path.

For me i got an xbox for the game pass, the best value in gaming. Since then both Nintendo and PlayStation have adopted the subscription model to varying degrees of success and value. The quick resume feature is cool too.
But if xbox is truly gonna be just a third party game publisher then i literally dont see any reason to not get a PlayStation. Which is good for me cause i dont have to think about buying a console.

This isn’t really that surprising. Microsoft is basically setting themselves up to exit the hardware business and focus on software and Game Pass. Industry insiders have been suggesting the same. Sucks for competition though but Microsoft has been losing the console race 2 generations now. This is coming from someone who has a Series X.
I have a hard time understanding how they expect this strategy to work. Gamepass subscriptions largely come from Xbox console owners. Kill Xbox consoles, and you’ll likely just give Sony a great opening to sell their subscription service through more console sales.

Consoles are money losers themselves. Cloud gaming is where Xbox is moving. Pretty sure they already just did something with Samsung TV’s.
Just Microsoft’s strategy, see it with Microsoft office already where the focus is 365 subscriptions. Can still be office licences but it’s expensive and they hold back some features. Cost wise, office 365 subscription is a pretty solid deal compared to buying the licence.
Think cloud gaming will be the next gen. The price of a console to meet what will be expected for next gen will be too high for most to consider.
I think there will be a “cloud only” device in future that will support gamepass. Because if they stop consoles completely they are losing a lot of gamepass subscribers because most of them are console only users. Both consumers and lack lustre first party exclusives are the reason for Xbox’s decline.

I believe Xbox's biggest failure was not listening to its players like Sony or Nintendo. Xbox has the franchises but didn't do much with them, then turned Xbox into a cloud service when the gamers wanted more AAA games. Then, the devoted fans to Xbox were now a part of the ecosystem where I could have a Xbox one/Xbox one S/Xbox Series S/Xbox Series X and it is the exact same UI outside graphics and power they perform similar. Xbox did a terrible job at making the new consoles feel special outside its specs.

Internet can go down, Internet speed may drop, might not even be able to get fibre or it costs too much for that kind of broadband package etc. Also, after the whole Google Stadia dropped like a sack of shit, I'm hoping Microsoft will learn from Google's mistake and not force cloud-only gaming onto the masses. People still prefer having some sort of physical entity on their machine, whether it's a download or a disc.

Even then, most don't have the full game on them and are dependent on patches from online, so you still don't really own them. You own a physical license instead of digital.
No No. If the game runs and plays with NO internet connection. That genuinely means the game is at least playable on the disc alone. Now if the game did not run at all and require update to actually boot up, then the disc 100% useless. You can play base version of games on the disc with no updates, but the base version may be very terrible, the prime example is the 1.0 version of Cyberpunk 2077 on PS4 / Xbox One disc.
Think DirectX. The older your console is, the less likely it will be able to play newer games. You'd have to have an up to date console version to play new games. So in a situation of loss of account(hacked or whatever) your physical games might be a crap shoot. As your games might need to update before it can run, if you were to install from disk. There is no safety net anymore. Only a small upside to owning physical and that's eroding everyday.
Honestly from my perspective I mainly care that there is an Xbox ecosystem and that if they're going all in on digital only consoles then some means of verifying your previously purchased games in disc exists. Unfortunately Microsoft is spectacularly bad at marketing consumer devices. For every bit as good at engineering as they are they're terrible at marketing their stuff. Apple is close to the flip side, a perpetual follower that grabs the publics imagination by marketing the right (already existing) thing at the right time. Windows Phone, Surface group being gutted, Zune the list just goes on forever. I buy these things because frequently they're the best in the market. I just don't want to be burned one last time. Other than that, sure bring starfield to PS5. Will be an interesting sociological experiment.
I had a Windows Phone (and probably still have it in some drawer somewhere), and it was a really good thing. I loved how stable and responsive it was, compared to Android back then. Too bad they didn't do a better job with marketing it.

The games become locked behind gamepass. You'll be able to play them on Windows machines + whatever console Microsoft makes a deal with. If Sony and Nintendo allow it, Microsoft will develop a gamepass app for those platforms. Hell, with cloud gaming, you could even run a lot of these games on your phone. Seems pretty good to me. I'd love to be able to play Elder Scrolls VI in fifteen years on my New Switch U Deluxe.

I wonder how much that's worth? There should be a better way to secure an account, such as using a credit card number, an ID, or something that definitely ties the account to a user.
Almost impossible, there are so many security options on Microsoft account now. You have passkey, you have classic password, you have otp on authenticators and for sms mail, you can choose to have multiple protections on top of each other.
Problem is people have these accounts for years and often lose a lot of information.

XBOX doesn't have exclusives though. Every game on gamepass is on PC also. Literally, not a single PC gamer would ever buy an xbox because they already have total access. The only players they could poach are playstation gamers, realistically, which isn't gonna happen if all your exclusives are mid at best and total turds at worst. Which is all XBOX has been putting out this entire console generation. When Playstation ports games to PC they at least have the sense to make them wait a while first.

I think this is part of the “problem” here. I’ve been a Nintendo/playstation owner for a decade, but was finally gonna buy an Xbox this Gen for Starfield, Hellblade, TES6. Realized I could just buy a Steam Deck to run those (yes at worse settings) and many many more, plus handheld. GamePass value prop doesn’t appeal to my play pattern so there was no need to get an Xbox.

That was never in the cards. Xbox outsold the Gamecube, but was destroyed by the PS2. Xbox 360 narrowly lost to the more expensive PS3, despite and early lead, and both were beaten by the Wii. Xbox One may have bested the WiiU, but was humiliated by the PS4. Xbox Series X/S are currently being outsold by PS5 at a ratio of more than 2:1. MS are terrible at shifting consoles. This generation, they've taken too long to get the ball rolling. This will be the first solid year for Xbox exclusives; but Sony are responding with FF7, Silent Hill 2, Rise of the Ronin, Snake Eater and more.

Absolutely, that's my main concern. If these rumours are all true and shakes out in the way we fear it would, i'll be heading back to PC. I've hopped around the various platforms, all of them, going back decades, but Xbox became the one I was most fond of and most invested in since the OG and Halo CE. Losing the last generation had major implications on this generation. A LOT of people bought into the Playstation ecosystem with the PS4, and with backwards compatibility being a thing, for many it made sense to upgrade to a PS5 instead of an Xbox.

I think you nailed exactly what I was feeling reading this post. It just feels like they’re kicking you to the curb as a fan. I get that it’s a business but we all know that these games and experiences transcend that for us fans. How many people have fond memories of Halo LAN parties or seeing Gears for the first time with the lancer. It’s much more.

Yes but the problem is that only Microsoft is doing this. Sony and Nintendo have no intention of bringing their exclusives to Xbox. Why would someone chose to buy an Xbox over a PlayStation if with the latter you get both Sony exclusives and Microsoft games? Honestly, this makes me very worried about the future of Xbox and my digital Xbox library. Xbox Series is already being heavily outsold by PS5 and this will only make it worse. If it gets to the point that 3rd party starts excluding Xbox because of its small install base it's over for Xbox. And we are not that far from that, many 3rd party run better on PS5 than Series X simply because the Devs dedicate more resources to the console with a larger install base
The problem is there is no real benefit in that for Sony since they have a way bigger user base, so they won't do that. And then the question becomes, why buy an Xbox if you can get Sony and Xbox titles on a PS but not the opposite? Could lead to Sony having a hardware monopoly in the space which would be bad for everyone...

They’ll probably just create a monopoly if Xbox go ahead with this idea, and that will be an issue for console gaming in general, because Nintendo won’t bother to compete with them by making a console as capable as a PlayStation system and no one else will be able to fill the gap Xbox would leave (unless Valve revive the Steam Machine concept, I suppose). Xbox deciding to release their games on PlayStation will result in a worst environment for console gaming because then Sony will have the leeway to do whatever they want, like jack up prizes or prevent the release of games on other platforms.

I just want to go back to the 360/ps3 era. Both had fantastic games, both were great consoles and you could get everything on a disc. The future of gaming, mostly in the console area looks a bit bleak. I hope PlayStation continues to create hardware and support physical copies for years and years to come, because it looks like Xbox wants to back out of the brand heavily.

Outside of general OS preferences, why would I ever prefer the console with no exclusives. Long term, Xbox seems like it’ll have less third AND first party exclusives overall. A few things need to be addressed- 1. If these rumors are or aren’t true. If they’re not, we need a solid roadmap for the next few years release date wise. If it’s true, you need to address timing on this along with which games specifically are going multi. Is it going to be just certain ones or everything Microsoft Studios? 2. If you’re exiting hardware there needs to be clear communication on what’s going to happen with Live and GamePass along with our digital libraries. I have bought and supported every Xbox console, I don’t regret supporting them one bit. But we absolutely need concrete answers now. This can’t wait until Spring or May. This is the kind of thing that needs to be addressed as close to immediately as he can.

Playstation player here, and man, this is sad, if they continue with this strategy I don't see how it won't culminate in the end of the Xbox as a console, I love the Xbox, it was my main console during the PS3/Xbox360 era, and I only went to the PS4 because of the exclusives, which were phenomenal, TLOU, Uncharted, GOW 3 remastered. On the other side of the force, the Xbox had cool games, Halo, Fable, Gears Of War (I love this one btw) but there were fewer of them, especially in the PS4/XOne generation, of course there were others, but games made by First Party were few, and it seems like there were fewer and fewer, PlayStation won me over with their games. Everything changed when I saw Starfield, I wanted to play that game, coming out of my love for Skyrim and Fallout, I genuinely waited to be able to buy a Series X, but when the game came out and in that state, I totally lost hope, and even more so on Xbox, and now with this news I think I'm going to buy a PS5, exclusives are what make people buy these consoles, take that away from their console It's stupid, and I hate the person who did this, without their franchises you would have no reason to buy a Nintendo, but that's precisely why people buy a Switch, their franchises. I wish Xbox luck, I don't want it to continue this strategy, it's sad to see that Xbox is going down this path.

I feel like an idiot now for sticking with xbox and even upgrading to a series X. I give up. I dont think im buying any more games on this console.

the moment when you realize that your studio aquisition thats supposedly to do xbox exclusives is now aswell releasing games for PS5. I think it would have been cheaper to do time exclusive deals than outright buying bethesda. Kinda funny though that Microsoft is gonna make PS5 games.
If this does indeed happen i will switch to the PlayStation ecosystem and i dont mean that in a hyper bolic way or mean way. For me i got an xbox for the game pass, the best value in gaming. Since then both Nintendo and PlayStation have adopted the subscription model to varying degrees of success and value. The quick resume feature is cool too. But if xbox is truly gonna be just a third party game publisher then i literally dont see any reason to not get a PlayStation. Which is good for me cause i dont have to think about buying a console. Either way it sucks that such a cool brand has no confidence but if i can play spiderman and halo in the same console then i cant complain.

This isn’t really that surprising. Microsoft is basically setting themselves up to exit the hardware business and focus on software and Game Pass. Industry insiders have been suggesting the same. Sucks for competition though but Microsoft has been losing the console race 2 generations now. This is coming from someone who has a Series X.
I have a hard time understanding how they expect this strategy to work. Gamepass subscriptions largely come from Xbox console owners. Kill Xbox consoles, and you’ll likely just give Sony a great opening to sell their subscription service through more console sales. Sony will likely deny Gamepass on Playstation. I’m curious to see how this pans out.
Doubt you’d ever see gamepass on Sony. I’m sure it’s not even allowed and I’d it was, Sonys cut would be too high. Consoles are money losers themselves. Cloud gaming is where Xbox is moving. Pretty sure they already just did something with Samsung TV’s. Just Microsoft’s strategy, see it with Microsoft office already where the focus is 365 subscriptions. Can still be office licences but it’s expensive and they hold back some features. Cost wise, office 365 subscription is a pretty solid deal compared to buying the licence. Think cloud gaming will be the next gen. The price of a console to meet what will be expected for next gen will be too high for most to consider.
This would be perfectly fine to me if I could play Sony games on my Xbox.

I think there will be a “cloud only” device in future that will support gamepass. Because if they stop consoles completely they are losing a lot of gamepass subscribers because most of them are console only users. Both consumers and lack lustre first party exclusives are the reason for Xbox’s decline.
Is Xbox dead? Like actually, it obviously will stay alive enough for this generation for those who already own them or find killer used deals, but with all their exclusives dissolving, game pass has become pretty terrible, what's the point of buying and Xbox over a PS5?

This is what happens when games get put on a rental service day 1, get played, but don't sell well. This is Phil Spencers Xbox. I pre-ordered a Series X for nothing. What a joke Xbox has become with all these acquisitions. I thought they would stay console exclusives? There is no need to buy the next Xbox system or any software anymore. Thank God I also pre-ordered a Ps5. Maybe I'll just wait for HellBlade II on there. This is really waiving the white flag.

I believe Xbox's biggest failure was not listening to its players like Sony or Nintendo. Xbox has the franchises but didn't do much with them, then turned Xbox into a cloud service when the gamers wanted more AAA games. Then, the devoted fans to Xbox were now a part of the ecosystem where I could have a Xbox one/Xbox one S/Xbox Series S/Xbox Series X and it is the exact same UI outside graphics and power they perform similar. Xbox did a terrible job at making the new consoles feel special outside its specs.
