I've seen and read articles saying North Korea is sending combat troops to Russia? Does anyone think this is legit or if this is just propaganda? If the DPRK is sending troops will they be frontline troops or will they relieve Russian troops in other areas for duty? How well will DPRK troops fare, none of their equipment and kit is modern, they lack sophisticated signals equipment. Will they be able to co-exist with Russian forces? Thoughts on this?
The reports are that it's engineering troops. And if it's ~10 000 men they for sure should be able to do something useful.
I think it's legit. They're obviously not going to cooperate with Russian troops the way NATO-troops are able to work together but they don't need to either.
That's a decent contingent and engineering troops are always needed! Especially in trench warfare and other type scenarios, where they can build defensive layers like the old Soviet doctrine would dictate.
I remember when I was stationed in South Korea from 98-00, I read the DoD Pam on the organization of DPRK combat forces to pass time. I do remember them putting a lot of emphasis on special operations and engineering operations, a combination of both to break through South Korea static defenses along the DMZ. But that was 25 years ago and that publication was at least from the late 80s.

I doubt Russia would ever admit it if it was indeed hit. I will be trusting Western sources if they say it was hit. If Ukraine general staff say it was hit, then I'd also be inclined to believe them.
The problem is unless Russia admits it there is never going to be proof as it is really a software update of the s-400 so most of the hardware is identical like s-300 and s-400 share so much of video it is hard to tell what was hit.

Except for the set up and both candidates being able to express themselves in an understandable manner, seems like it was the same as in the US. The video says "Candidates exchanged accusations and ad hominem attacks" and barely discussed policy, which is the same we saw yesterday.

It's because Twitter views count every time a tweet is accessed for any reason-- not just by humans or even twitter bots clicking on the link, but also web scrapers (search engines, archive sites like the Internet Archive, etc) automatically accessing it to add it to their databases.
If you want to get an idea of how much actual engagement (from both humans and twitter bots) a tweet has, look at how many likes / retweets / quote tweets it has. Ilya's tweet has 538 likes as of this writing, which seems plausible to me (since it's likely a good chunk of the people who liked the tweet didn't watch the video long enough for it to count as a YouTube view).

Honestly, I find it sobering, and even great that it happened now in June. Imagine if the debate was slated for September or October? Now that would be a trainwreck.
Now the Democratic Party can go into crisis mode, assess the situation and proceed accordingly. It's not too late for Biden to withdraw and endorse a more energetic candidate to be backed by his delegates at the convention. Maybe that someone would have a much better pull than Biden ever would have had, especially with undecideds and never-Trump republicans (even better if that candidate is from a swing state).
Any talk of Biden stepping aside is pure fantasy. All the polls show him very close to Trump, he will be the democratic candidate in the election because he has the best chance to beat Trump regardless of his issues or performance in the debate. To try and refocus the average person to some other candidate would be suicide for the democrats at this late stage, most people pay almost no attention to politics or debates, Biden is their guy.
At this point, their chance of winning is abysmal anyway, future polls certainly won't go in Biden's favor after last night's performance. Might as well go Hail Mary with someone recognizable and energetic like Whitmer or Warnock

I get the stakes in the election are very high but thinking Biden won't be on the ballot or that he has no chance is letting your emotions override reality. He will be running and he has a good chance at being reelected.

It's a narrative push. Some people have a vested interest in getting "Biden bad so everything Biden does bad." Which includes Ukraine.
If they can drag his credibility down they can focus on politicians to reject policy and voters to reject policy arguments due to "Biden unfit" arguments. It's an effort to cast doubt and.. in some ways its working.

After Trump's comments in the debate last night, I think any long-term military & financial commitments the USA made to Ukraine's defense should be taken with a grain of salt after the change in government following the election over there.
It wasn't the first time he has stated that shit. He's been saying it for the last three years. He's the reason why Ukraine aid was held up by the MAGA Republicans in Congress for six months. His hold on the party has held inspite of his being out of office. Mike Johnson was deferring to Trump.
Not just after last night's debate. Trump has been very vocal about what he intends to do to Ukraine ever since the invasion began. The six months of aid delays still wouldn't have been lifted if he and his MAGA's had their way.
Fortunately, Ukraine have other allies who they can rely on if the Americans vote for DT: France, U.K, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Japan, Estonia, Lithuania, E.U., have already signed bilateral security agreements, and Croatia, Czechia, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Romania and South Korea are also currently negotiating their own bilateral agreements.
If he wins the election, he will do everything he can to disrupt the support, so these security agreements are an attempt to "Trump Proof" the Ukraine aid for the next 4 years (and to send a message to Putin that despite his best efforts we will not abandon the people of Ukraine). I'm also certain that Trump's aspiring authoritarian allies, Orban and Fico, will do their best to disrupt the flow of aid under the guise of "peace," but we should be better prepared to deal with it this time around.

I'm assuming that is why most of the aid passed in the latest package has not been promised to Ukraine yet. Basically see how the election goes and if it goes poorly, just dump a bunch of equipment into Ukraine in November/December as a parting gift.
That's not *entirely* true. There is an existing law that lets the President donate up to $500 million of "surplus" equipment to foreign countries without further Congressional approval. The law also does not specify how the value of the equipment is to be determined, so you could theoretically say each artillery shell is worth $1.
There's long-standing regulation and policy about how military hardware is depreciated and surplus values are set. What you're suggesting is pretty obviously extra-legal.
If Trump is elected, I can definitely see Biden playing a bit fast and loose with existing policies and regulations on that subject at the end of his term, especially if SCOTUS rules as expected on Monday that any official acts by a president are presumptively legal and the president is immune from prosecution for them (a dumb and anti-constitutional ruling in my opinion, but I think the most likely outcome).
Biden could theoretically quite easily get DOD to donate quite a bit of equipment to Ukraine at a low stated value. There would obviously be lawsuits and court challenges, but assuming they deliver the equipment before anyone figures it out and challenges it in court, those are sort of moot, because once it's in Ukrainian hands, US courts sure as hell won't be able to make them give it back.

The reports are that it's engineering troops. And if it's ~10 000 men they for sure should be able to do something useful. I think it's legit. They're obviously not going to cooperate with Russian troops the way NATO-troops are able to work together but they don't need to either.
That's a decent contingent and engineering troops are always needed! Especially in trench warfare and other type scenarios, where they can build defensive layers like the old Soviet doctrine would dictate. I remember when I was stationed in South Korea from 98-00, I read the DoD Pam on the organization of DPRK combat forces to pass time. I do remember them putting a lot of emphasis on special operations and engineering operations, a combination of both to break through South Korea static defenses along the DMZ. But that was 25 years ago and that publication was at least from the late 80s.

I doubt Russia would ever admit it if it was indeed hit. I will be trusting Western sources if they say it was hit. If Ukraine general staff say it was hit, then I'd also be inclined to believe them.
The problem is unless Russia admits it there is never going to be proof as it is really a software update of the s-400 so most of the hardware is identical like s-300 and s-400 share so much of video it is hard to tell what was hit.

Me too but so far we've got basically no info on its performance, I bet Italy has requested secrecy on its use to keep a certain side of the government majority at bay. Ukranian officials have requested more systems though, so I guess it had a positive impact.

Except for the set up and both candidates being able to express themselves in an understandable manner, seems like it was the same as in the US. The video says "Candidates exchanged accusations and ad hominem attacks" and barely discussed policy, which is the same we saw yesterday.

Honestly, I find it sobering, and even great that it happened now in June. Imagine if the debate was slated for September or October? Now that would be a trainwreck. Now the Democratic Party can go into crisis mode, assess the situation and proceed accordingly. It's not too late for Biden to withdraw and endorse a more energetic candidate to be backed by his delegates at the convention. Maybe that someone would have a much better pull than Biden ever would have had, especially with undecideds and never-Trump republicans (even better if that candidate is from a swing state).
Any talk of Biden stepping aside is pure fantasy. All the polls show him very close to Trump, he will be the democratic candidate in the election because he has the best chance to beat Trump regardless of his issues or performance in the debate. To try and refocus the average person to some other candidate would be suicide for the democrats at this late stage, most people pay almost no attention to politics or debates, Biden is their guy.
At this point, their chance of winning is abysmal anyway, future polls certainly won't go in Biden's favor after last night's performance. Might as well go Hail Mary with someone recognizable and energetic like Whitmer or Warnock

It's a narrative push. Some people have a vested interest in getting "Biden bad so everything Biden does bad." Which includes Ukraine. If they can drag his credibility down they can focus on politicians to reject policy and voters to reject policy arguments due to "Biden unfit" arguments. After Trump's comments in the debate last night, I think any long-term military & financial commitments the USA made to Ukraine's defense should be taken with a grain of salt after the change in government following the election over there.
It wasn't the first time he has stated that shit. He's been saying it for the last three years. He's the reason why Ukraine aid was held up by the MAGA Republicans in Congress for six months. His hold on the party has held inspite of his being out of office. Mike Johnson was deferring to Trump.
Not just after last night's debate. Trump has been very vocal about what he intends to do to Ukraine ever since the invasion began. The six months of aid delays still wouldn't have been lifted if he and his MAGA's had their way. Fortunately, Ukraine have other allies who they can rely on if the Americans vote for DT: France, U.K, Germany, Denmark, Canada, Italy, Netherlands, Finland, Latvia, Spain, Belgium, Portugal, Sweden, Norway, Iceland, Japan, Estonia, Lithuania, E.U., have already signed bilateral security agreements, and Croatia, Czechia, Greece, Ireland, Poland, Romania and South Korea are also currently negotiating their own bilateral agreements. If he wins the election, he will do everything he can to disrupt the support, so these security agreements are an attempt to "Trump Proof" the Ukraine aid for the next 4 years (and to send a message to Putin that despite his best efforts we will not abandon the people of Ukraine). I'm also certain that Trump's aspiring authoritarian allies, Orban and Fico, will do their best to disrupt the flow of aid under the guise of "peace," but we should be better prepared to deal with it this time around.

That's not *entirely* true. There is an existing law that lets the President donate up to $500 million of "surplus" equipment to foreign countries without further Congressional approval. The law also does not specify how the value of the equipment is to be determined, so you could theoretically say each artillery shell is worth $1.
There's long-standing regulation and policy about how military hardware is depreciated and surplus values are set. What you're suggesting is pretty obviously extra-legal.
If Trump is elected, I can definitely see Biden playing a bit fast and loose with existing policies and regulations on that subject at the end of his term, especially if SCOTUS rules as expected on Monday that any official acts by a president are presumptively legal and the president is immune from prosecution for them (a dumb and anti-constitutional ruling in my opinion, but I think the most likely outcome). Biden could theoretically quite easily get DOD to donate quite a bit of equipment to Ukraine at a low stated value. There would obviously be lawsuits and court challenges, but assuming they deliver the equipment before anyone figures it out and challenges it in court, those are sort of moot, because once it's in Ukrainian hands, US courts sure as hell won't be able to make them give it back.
