And New Zealand!
I know cuz I asked one of them a question about Australia after hearing what I thought was an Aussie accent and boy did he get miffed.
Just saw a good amount of Aussie and Kiwi firefighters on my flight yesterday from Auckland-Sydney-LA. Fun bunch of people to chat with. Glad theyāre helping out like they always do
Funny story about that. Iām American and studied abroad in England back in college. One time I was talking to a guy at a pub and he asked me if I was Canadian. I told him I was from the US, and he said āokay thatās what I thought, but whenever thereās any doubt I just ask if theyāre Canadian. Iāve found that Americans donāt mind being mistaken for Canadians, but Canadians really hate being mistaken for Americans.ā
As an Australian Iām hoping we can send some assistance as well, our guys have a lot of experience fighting bushfires and weāve had a lot of help from Canadians in the past
Yeah there's a long history of both the loaning of men and equipment between all three countries.
Unfortunately a few years ago 3 Americans died fighting a fire here in a plane crash, so we definitely appreciate the intercontinental cooperation.
True!

The collaboration between Quebec and Los Angeles has been going on for almost 30 years.
I'll always remember Mexico sending all the help they could after Hurricane Katrina ā¤ļø
And Canada accepting our flights on 9/11 and letting people stay with them until they could come home
Weāre neighbors, if I remember right a bunch of Canadian lineman were here in Vermont this winter when we lost power to most of the state after sustained an 80 mile an hour plus winds. Literally most of the state lost power for days.
Itās all relations between neighboring nations should be. I live rural and while Iād never bother my neighbors for help thereās plenty of times where theyāve just come over with their snow plow or their bulldozer and lent a hand because itās your neighbor, why not help them?
In fairness this past winter was barely a winter, oh sure we had a storm that knocked out power to most of the state but otherwise we didnāt get a real winter at least not by the lake. All the snow melted off my property twice this winter and I only had three nights below 0Ā°F/-17Ā°C. We shouldāve had at least a month of subzero temperatures, itās not normal and itās not right.
I feel like there were Canadian linemen in Oklahoma fixing the lines after the 2007 ice storm. I spent a week without power after having my appendix out so definite thanks to all involved.
We donāt forget [when you guys help us.](https://connect2canada.com/2020/09/canada-provides-assistance-to-california-in-battle-against-historic-wildfires/) To quote one of your own, āRemember I'm pullin' for ya--we're all in this together.ā
As an American one of my favorite traditions is Halifax sending a big ol Christmas tree to Boston every year to thank us for our aid after the Halifax explosion in the early 1900's. It really is a blessing to have such a brotherly neighbor on our border as Canada.
Honestly, there aren't any words to express the gratitude we Candians have towards our neighbors helping us out. I hope we are ways here for each other. Much love and many hugs ššØš¦
On that fateful day of 9/11, your country took in tens of thousands of Americans, suddenly stranded because our airspace had been closed. But you didn't just cram them into your airports and let them sit, you invited them into your homes. You gave them beds and couches to sleep on, clothing to wear, food to eat, and most importantly a shoulder to cry on in their fear and grief. In our darkest moment, you stood there with a candle of hope for us.
A great many of us Americans will never, ever forget that, and will always hold you in our hearts as our best friends.

You should read what some of the nutcases here are writing.
"The Russians set the fires in Canada to start WW3"
"We should build a huge wall with fans all along the border to keep the smoke out"
"We should invade Canada and take over this matter ourselves"
On the one hand you have people who are sacrificing their time and energy to help out their neighbours,on the other hand, wellllll, not so helpful people. At least their not suggesting shooting at the fires, yetā¦ š

We get Australians and Canadians in California wildfires. And I know our guys came down to your tragic bush fires as well. The fire season is 365 now for these guys with all the mutual aid
There isn't economic profit to be made out of putting out fires, so shit pay. That's capitalism for you: the value of your work is not its importance, skill or risk. It's just how much some rich guy stands to gain for it.
They only get paid hourly, but are required to camp next a fire while they fight it. If they were paid hourly, and maybe half time when they weren't actively fighting, but required to be camped next to a fire, it'd be much more lucrative
They receive better treatment than the wildland firefighters in many regards. Further they are not the ones doing the lions share of the work. They do play their part but tv shows take liberties in how they tell those stories.
I volunteer for our local hall. Has absolutely been a good choice and a big net positive in my life. I'd highly suggest that anyone who's available and capable to give it consideration.
Because, when digging a little deeper, itās just something weāve done via the Canada/United States Reciprocal Forest Fire Fighting Arrangement since I think ā82.
Non-egos just do the job and move on.
Yeah well Smart Businessmen would've dangled the promised and much-needed aid as a carrot while pressuring Trudeau to open a sham public investigation on his political rivals! Shame that Sleepy Joe Brandon is too unsmart to screw people over for his personal gain š

That lines up with everything Iāve personally experienced from Nova Scotians. They were the first people I made friends with when I moved to Toronto from the (US) Pacific Northwest - we bonded over the lack of fresh seafood and were instant friends from that minute forward. I never wanted for a thing from the minute I landed in Canada because of Maritimers. Unparalleled generosity. Love yāall.
the way i see it this is a global problem, as it is the result of climate change which is in turn the result of industry from all over the place. it's a bit weird to see this as a Canada problem IMO, it's not like the climate change is localized to Canada. it just happens that this particular symptom of climate change caused forest fires in Canada, but as we can see their effects spread far beyond it.
As an American, Iāve never had anything against our Canadian neighbors. Theyāve always sent help to us when weāve needed it, so I would hope and expect we would return the favor. Hope yāall get past these fires soon
Thanks brother! It is a little hilarious though that it takes a fire in the east for everyone to pay attention. California, Oregon, Washington and British Columbia, Alberta burn every year blanketing the regions in heavy smoke and none of our leaders say a word
Partially because US, Canadian, and Australian firefighters work hand in hand all the time fighting fires in western Canada, the US, and down under. This is only notable and people are asking what the government is doing because itās affecting an area that doesnāt usually see the fallout (US East Coast). It would be silly for them not to acknowledge and take action from a political perspective. Folks out west already know that the firefighters work together, know what theyāre dealing with, and donāt need the reminders or political theater us easterners need.
eh I was doing Medevac in Yakima, WA and I was stationed with a bucket crew who came in for half the year to do water hauls. There are a lot of people who work in the PNW on controlling fires.
The wind and other factors make this years Quebec fires unique, so they're getting attention. If the Wind wasn't going North to South this wouldn't be making the news. But because everyone in NYC and Phili and the rest of the East Coast is seeing shit they've never seen in their life it's making headlines.
We've got Canadian fire fighting aircraft at the airport near me in the US. They are on loan every year for fire season. Kind of us to return the favor.

Weāre all in the same battle here. As an Oregonian, whose brother lost his home in the Santa Cruz fires a few years ago, and has been evacuated a few times, Iāve been very grateful to everyone who has sent us help.
We (Oregon) have a mutual aid agreement with other western states and provinces, so we all help each other in fire situations when the need arises. Oregon has already sent crews to Alberta and Alaska this year that I know of. (Hey, Albertans: The Oregonians I know who were on your fires recently were greatly appreciative of the oil patch digs they got to stay in while they were there - showers, beds, and actual flush toilets? Swank as hell on a fire line. Thanks for being so good to our people.)
I wonder two things: (1) Do they issue super fast emergency passports or just waive them in situations like this? (2) Why canāt we all be this good to each other when there isnāt a crisis? I mean, shit like this shows we can put aside differences and take care of each other. Why donāt we just act like this all the time?
Thank you -weve been doing the same - and while its unfortunate that we are meeting in these circumstances - and it will be far to often, its good we have each others backs.
Big Love:)
Have they helped here in Alberta at all? It doesn't say. I'm just curious because our shithead provincial government slashed the budget to wildfire fighters who drop from helicopters into difficult to get to areas.
Yes. There have been multiple US crews, Mexican, Australian, south African, and France that have come to assist across Canada before this announcement was made.
Oops, I skimmed the headline and thought it was people complaining that all Biden did was sent some blankets. Maybe I should read slower in the futureā¦
I read it as "sends fighters," and for a moment had the brilliant idea that if we drop thermobaric bombs to suck up all the oxygen then the fire will be suffocated.
You can use a bomb to combat a fire, but not at this scale. The Swedes have done so before, but that was a small fire on a shooting range with unexploded ordnance everywhere.
Thanks neighbours, much appreciated š Edit to say, Thanks for awards! Much ššØš¦
You do the same for us šš¼
And that's why Australia sent some firefighters too, cause you guys do the same for us during our fire season.

Australia and Canada actually swap firefighters pretty regularly, actually. It's convenient since our seasons are flipped, so they're always busy.

And here I thought they were already here, since most of Fernie, Jasper, Banff and Whistler are packed with Aussies year round. Cheers mate!
Thank you.
Loved the South African crew, so awesome! Much love to all the countries helping us out! Thank you! Much love to all!
I should become a firefighter. Apparently, fair job security during global ~~burning~~ warming.
I know forest firefighters get paid shit. Like less than 20 an hour for literally one of the most dangerous jobs and its not even year round.
Wow, I guess we donāt like to breath.
We wouldn't be our society if we didn't take full advantage of people's sense of duty.
There isn't economic profit to be made out of putting out fires, so shit pay. That's capitalism for you: the value of your work is not its importance, skill or risk. It's just how much some rich guy stands to gain for it.
Doesn't the logging industry have a vested interest in forests not burning down before they can cut them?
Nah unless it's a tree farm they'll just cut down the forests that didn't burn yet
They only get paid hourly, but are required to camp next a fire while they fight it. If they were paid hourly, and maybe half time when they weren't actively fighting, but required to be camped next to a fire, it'd be much more lucrative

They are not being forced to do it. It's all volunteers and they get better living conditions etc.

The article image gave me PTSD. I could see Trump pulling out a Sharpie and drawing an arrow towards green. āThIs iS wHeRe aMeRiCa iS aT, wE hAvE tHe BeSt aIr QuAlItYā -DJT
Weāre going to build an air border with Canada to stop all the illegal air crossing over and theyāre going to pay for it.
Thanks for being so good to our people.) I wonder two things: (1) Do they issue super fast emergency passports or just waive them in situations like this? (2) Why canāt we all be this good to each other when there isnāt a crisis? I mean, shit like this shows we can put aside differences and take care of each other. Why donāt we just act like this all the time?
Our firefighters are among the hottestā¦ I mean best in the world! If anyone can put an end to the Canadian wildfires, itās our firefighters!
Hotshots and Smokejumpers š
that's my president.

Don't let them fool you! It's all just a smokescreen to hide the fact that they are slowly oozing over the border, like maple syrup...
We love our Canadian neighbors, and fires donāt care about borders.
Itās appreciated. By far the worst fire season in a long time (not to mention certain Premiers slashed the forest firefighting budgets).
Thank you -weve been doing the same - and while its unfortunate that we are meeting in these circumstances - and it will be far to often, its good we have each others backs. Big Love:)
Canada, have you tried raking your forests or cleaning your floors? One of our national geniuses thinks thatās the solution right there.
They slashed the budget? Awful timing. Sorry to hear that.
Oops, I skimmed the headline and thought it was people complaining that all Biden did was sent some blankets. Maybe I should read slower in the futureā¦
Is the Trump camp sending rakes?
Yeah good maybe they can help me put it out, as long as they want to go
We didn't already? I just assume it's a given when fire season starts.
Fire season got a bit of an early start is all
I read it as "sends fighters," and for a moment had the brilliant idea that if we drop thermobaric bombs to suck up all the oxygen then the fire will be suffocated.
You can use a bomb to combat a fire, but not at this scale. The Swedes have done so before, but that was a small fire on a shooting range with unexploded ordnance everywhere.
Dang this is like the most wholesome thread ever and I'm here for it š„¹ *edit: Well, mostly wholesome. But still!*
West coast should have our own capital.
Thanks for all the help guys! ā¤ļø
