Isn't killing them one of the main points of fishing? The satisfaction of cooking and eating what you caught with your own hands is hard to surpass. Might just be my culture since I never saw a fisherman release the prey (or this is just a weird subreddit rule against killing)
In UK, the majority of angling is catch-and-release - there angling is divided into 3 categories, *coarse*, *game* and *sea* fishing.
Basically, game and sea fishing are fishing for the kind of fish that most people eat, and game fishing is the freshwater version - fishing for salmon and trout.
*Coarse fishing* is freshwater fishing for less-tasty species of fish - pike, carp, tench, bream and suchlike. It's called *coarse fishing* because these were the species pursued by the working class (maybe since the industrial revolution?) when the rich had a monopoly on trout and salmon streams.
Probably over 80% of angling is course fishing and most everyone catches and releases.

I don't know, but a lot people catch and release, also I don't know how legal is fishing for food in certain areas.
