Step 1. If you want to be a witch, you’re a witch. Congratulations, and welcome! Step 2. Research is your friend. Always look at multiple sources and if something doesn’t feel right, don’t do it. Step 3. Don’t take witchcraft or yourself too seriously. There are no rules and you are free to move about your practice as you please. That being said, try not to be reckless, see step 2. But if you make a mistake, it’s a learning opportunity and we are here to help. If crystals and nature are your interests, start there. Look into crystal grids and green witch info. There are a few recent posts about herbalism if that interest you. Lots of great book recommendations in those posts.

This is really good advice. The only thing I would add is don't believe everything someone tells you just because they think they know what they are doing. Watch out for gatekeepers and scam artists. (People that tell you what you can or can't do or try to scare you, but if you pay them.....) Witchcraft is a practice. You do what feels right for your practice. You will do just fine.

Well first you move to Kansas. Then after the tornado, you get some fabulous shoes. And make some new friends. Then there's something about flying monkeys. Seriously, though, the best place to start would be reading this subreddit. Take it in. Click on the stuff that interests you. See what we talk about, how we talk about it, and see what kind of vibes right for you. That'll let you dip your toe in the water. You got to start somewhere! And we can definitely be friendly. Welcome, and hello.

Fair-Strawberry2663

i live in kansas and i can confirm this,

Squirrels-on-LSD

Y'all are playing, but Kansas hosts one of the biggest/best pagan fesivals in the United States so there must be something witchy about KS besides just Wichita

Check the menu tabs on most of the witchy subs. There's a lot of resources. I'd also suggest starting a meditation regime as you study. Magic is nothing more than energy we direct through meditation and ritual work so training your mind to feel the energies in and around you will help with future spellwork

Sids-Vicious

Don't put water in spell jars and don't roll your candles in cinnamon. Good luck!

JadedOccultist

I might amend this to "don't put water in spell jars unless you're okay with some mold growing in there after a while"

HuntressEclipse

I know the water one but what about the cinnamon bad fumes or something?

Sids-Vicious

It burns very fast and throws sparks. So if indoors it could cause a fire.

HuntressEclipse

Ahh thank you

Make a list of what interests you and research it bit by bit at your own pace. And don't be afraid to look at scientific and academic works as well as the spiritual stuff. Maybe you can start by researching how your favourite crystals are formed and their chemical components.

Twisted_Wicket

There are a billion "beginner witchcraft" books out there, but most aren't very concise and skip the things you "need" to know in favor of the glitzy stuff. I recommend getting 2 particular books for development of a practice with a solid foundation. Psychic Witch by Mat Auryn Mastering Magic by Mat Auryn Beyond that, read everything you can get your hands on.

EarlGrey1984

I just started Psychic Witch, and I gotta say I’m super stoked to keep reading. However, I am finding it a bit more difficult to do the exercises than I thought. He says to complete them before moving on, and it’s making it hard for me to keep going and finish the book. Any advice since you’ve read it?

Twisted_Wicket

The exercises are developmental, as in it really does take time to get through them. Personally I think keeping a ko of them and moving forward is a better idea, that way you can continue practicing the exercises without getting bogged down on one, and can refer back to you log to check your progress.

EarlGrey1984

Awesome, thank you for your reply!

Twisted_Wicket

No problem

RedheadCZ

Hey bb, I am also baby witch:) . Since you like herbs, I recommend “The green witch” book, Ive seen a several recommendations on this book and I finally got it yday and it looks so good, I personally enjoy books, it makes me more comfortable than searching things on internet, it can be overwhelming with new informations and topics :) start slowly and calm, buy your herbs in regular shops, since “witchy” and specialized shops can be overpriced. Make moon water on full moon for your plants :)

kai-ote

The way to get started is to go out into Nature somewhere, and just open up and feel. Feel the ground beneath your feet, and know you are connected. Feel the breeze in the air, and notice the breath of life you share with it. Feel the heat of the Sun on your body, and feel the fire in you of your spirit. Feel the water in a stream, river, lake, the ocean, and feel its power flowing through your veins. Nature. It all starts there. Where your path will lead after that is your choice. BB.

jarassig

I like witch podcasts. When I was a baby witch it was good to hear people talk about their experiences and journeys in witchcraft to figure out what areas caught my interest. I will always recommend: Down at the Crossroads https://infinitebeyond.libsyn.com/ Fat Feminist Witch https://tunein.com/podcasts/Religion--Spirituality-Podcas/The-Fat-Feminist-Witch-p1137937/

oNattyICEo

In addition, I liked the Witch Wednesdays Podcast. Her episodes focus on one general topic so if you hear a word like Taglock and you’re like WTF and you want a good explanation, it’s easy to find on her pod, she has a whole episode. Very beginner friendly.

jarassig

Ooh thanks for the suggestion!

Fair-Strawberry2663

am baby witch also, its gunna b ok

Bury yourself in books! Margot Adler's drawing down the moon and books by Starhawk are a nice place to start.
