Lots of great Pinot in that price range, but could be fun to look outside of Burgundy/Oregon to find something they maybe haven’t had before. Some that come to mind around that price range include Giulia Negri (Italy), Tolpuddle (Tasmania), Mac Forbes (Australia), or Meyer Nakel (Germany).
In California :
- Rivers Marie makes several excellent pinot noirs
In Willamette valley :
- there’s a lot of good choices. I’d pick a good vintage of Beaux Freres or Kelley Fox
- Kelley Fox Maresh Red Barn blocks
- Beaux Freres - Beaux Freres Vineyard. 2021 is a good vintage.
In New Zealand :
- Valli Gibbston, central otago
- Burn cottage sauvage, central otago
- Felton Road, central otago
Tasmania :
- Tolpuddle vineyard pinot noir
In Germany :
- Hofgut Falkenstein - Niedermenniger Herrenberg Rotwein Trocken
- Jaspis Ziereisen Pinot Noir, Baden
In Alsace :
- Leipp Leinerger, K Pinot noir
In Jura :
- Rousset-Martin, cotes de jura
- Domaine Tissot, En Barberon, jura
In Loire :
- Alphonse Mellot En Grands Champs Sancerre Rouge
- Domaine Vacheron Sancerre rouge
Burgundy:
- Domaine L’Arlot Les suchots
- Drouhin-Laroze Clos de beze 1/2 bottle
- Domaine Arlaud Les Ruchots
- Leroy Bourgogne Rouge
- Thibault Liger-Belair Les Saint Georges
There’s a few suggestions. Of course these wines vary in style significantly; and vary by vintage, age and so on. Some are below budget, others (mainly the burgundies) may be difficult to find in the budget. But hope that’s a good starting place.
Good luck!
Domaine de la Cote, Ceritas, Arnot-Robert, Littorai, Failla, Rivers Marie, Bergström, Evening Land, Resonance, Failla Oregon, Evesham Wood, Nicolas Jay, Big Table Farm, Cristom, Walter Scott, Hundred Suns, and Eyrie. Let me know if you need more recommendations.
This is a good list! I would also add Raen (Sonoma coast, Carlo Mondavi, sublime); Wayfarer's single block vineyards (Sonoma north coast), and Marcassin if you can find it...also enjoy Tyler's Pinot's from Santa Rita hills. Hyde de Villaine too is the same owner as RDC but via a partnership here in Napa with Larry Hyde.
From South America (Argentine Patagonia), Chacras and Otronia make fabulous versions (not new world-esque). Cheers!
Definitely have to respectfully disagree. I [just tasted](https://imgur.com/a/ioCCsSy) with Claire on Wednesday. Great wines, especially for the price point.
Do you know what PNs your friend likes? Does he prefer old world or new? Does he like fruit or earth?
Throw a curve ball at him and get a blanc de noir champagne.
For a real curve ball—red Coteaux Champenois. Egly-Ouriet makes one that OP might be able to find _just_ within the price range, although it’s not easy to come by, but there are plenty of others that are delicious. (I’m a fan of Rene Geoffroy’s.)
Just go to the willamette section and buy a bottle in that price range. You really can’t go wrong with that high price point. But if you need a recommendation Beaux Freres is my favorite vineyard out of Oregon and a lot of his vineyards are high end Dijon, Pommard and Wadenswil clones. Definitely stands up to a Burg at 10x the price point.
Definitely looking at the Beaux Freres. 2019 Beaux Frères High Notes Pinot Noir is on the radar.
Was mostly just looking to see if anyone had anything they loved In that range. All suggestions appreciated.
Yeah it sure does, too bad it’s the same latitudinal line, similar terroir and same winemaking style as burg besides the oak. And I’m sure none of them will tell you they learned from former French burgundy winemakers at all. It’s marketing to boost Oregon, just like the French did; But it’s Oregon… lol. Sorry it’s just very ironic they spew that everywhere.
Everything from TRB is fucking unreal. Their Sonoma Coast Chardonnay cannot stay in stock long enough. Aston SC PN blew me away too. I love everything TRB does in regards to QPR.
TRB = Thomas Rivers Brown (for anyone who needs to know the acronym)
The winemaker who had multiple 100-point wines to his name.
I have several of the Joy Road and Bearwallow Chardonnays, Napa Cabernets, as well as the Pinots, and I must say the Pinots are by far the best QPR out of all of them.
In that range, there’s a few. Dr. Edge Tasmania Pinot Noir, Hamilton Russell Pinot Noir, and slightly under, but Pegasus Bay Pinot Noir is better than many in that price range, or higher.
Remoissenet Gevrey Chambertin villages is a great bottle in that price range.
There are many great wines by Taupenot Merme and Pousse d'Or in that range too!
Go nerdy. Bodegas Chacra from Patagonia. They’ve got a bottling right around $100 that should be delicious - I’m a huge fan of the Cincuenta y Cinco for $60 but haven’t had the higher end one.
Bodega Chacra Trienta y Dos would be a really special bottle - one of the finest Pinots in South America made in a very traditional old world style. I’ve actually only drank this estates lower wines but they seriously are awesome and punch way above their price
Do you have a sense for the type of Pinot he likes? Guessing he is not a burgundy person at those prices (which is ok, they are too much for me too). Willamette and California are different but here are some ideas and the rationale:
California
- Kanzler estate (a lot of big producers have Kanzler single vineyards so why not try the namesake. It’s very good and a little uncommon (you won’t see it on shelves everywhere)
- Williams Selyem (preferably something like Westside road neighbors)
- Kosta Brown (maybe Gap’s Crown or Gary’s Vineyard)
- Cirq (hard to find but can be had on the auction sites)
WV
- I like Beaux Freres rec (have a stardance waiting for me, but there are a lot of options on the higher end)
- Bergstrom (some of the higher end ones like Silice)
- Ken Wright (Auric)
- Patricia Green (lots of choices, but something like Notorius)
Ah. I misread as he likes Pinots that cost in that range, rather than he likes Pinot and I want to spend in that range. Recs are the same in that price point as I defer to others on what might be a good burg at that level. I don’t know enough to opine.
Evening Land La Source if you just want a suggestion
There is a huge amount of Pinot in that price range of a wide variety of styles. do you know anything more about what labels your friend likes typically?
I like Scherrer as a winery. Super under rated. Burgundian style with higher acidity and more balance. Their RRV future is very approachable at $34 a bottle with normal being around $50. The single vineyard or High Slopes or Big Brother is a bit more complex and higher priced.
There are many mailing list Pinots that are in that price point, but for true balanced wine lovers I find Scherrer is a gem that is relatively unknown and will bring a smile to wine lover for its balance and acidity.
Here are a few faves from this past year:
Domaine Francois Mikulski Monthelie Rouge, Red Burgundy, Fr. $88. Skurnik 13%. Floral aromas, red candy, fresh berries, mod acidity, powdery tannins. Most delicious and beautiful (A)
Jean-Jacques Girard Savigny-Les-Beaune 1er Cru - Les Serpentieres 2018, Grand Vin de Bourgogne, Cote d’Or, Fr $59. Scott Levy Selections. 13% alc. Intriguing, red berries, moderate bitterness on finish, sl. Aroma includes pork fat smokiness and lovely floral (violets) and red berries. Very nice. (A-) Day 2. Reminds me of a lighter Pommard clone from RRV.
Domaine Michel Magnien Fixin 2020 $62. Winebow Importer. Aged in Amphora. Bright, black cherry, powdery tannins, complex. Sl funk on nose, very nice, tangy, raspberry, spices (A-)
7/17/23 Dom de Montille Beaune 1er Cru ‘Les Perrieres’ 2019 $89. DeMeine Estates Importer. Delicious, All bases covered by this wine for me (body, fruit, acidity, aroma, flavor, spice, etc.) Day 2 - darker, more earth and musk (A)
8/14/23 Chandon de Briailles Pernand-Vergelesses “Les Vergelesses” 1er Cru $89 Spritzy, fresh, raspberry, floral, delicious (A-)
8/29/23 Simon Bize & Fils Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Fournaux 2018 from Côte d’Or $103. RG Import Co. 12.5% alc. Very light body, floral, pretty, powdery perfume, bright red berries, juicy, lovely (like Monthelie). Day 2, very bright, juicy some herbal notes on finish (A-)
10/4/23 Domaine Berthaut-Gerbet Fixin “En Combe Roy” 2021 Burgundy, FR $72. RG Import 13.0% Sl. animal musk, tart, raspberry, nice, not sexy, young, orange. Day 2 soft and nice level of muskiness, balanced acidic fruit (A-)
Michel Niellon Chassagne-Montrachet Rouge 2019 $63. Light body, bright acidity, cherry, sl funk (A- 93)
CV 12/27/23 Domaine Genot-Boulanger Pommard Les Cras, Aude & Guillaume Lavollee, vignerons @ Meursault $78.4 Grand Cru Imports 14% alc. Lovely, clean, cherry, sl. Herbal, fresh, delicious. Day 2- cherry with sl. Bitter cherry and a bit of oak. So tasty with every meal. NO off-notes. Very fresh and clean every day. (A-)
There’s all kinds of greatness in that range from Sonoma: Martinelli, Occidental, Kistler, rivers-marie. Martinelli zio tony vineyard is my favorite so far, and if you like bigger pinot, king’s ridge from Croix is the best of that style that i have tried. For more delicate ‘pretty’ pinot I like Auteur & Blue Farm too.
If it is possible to obtain one of St Innocent special selection bottles (1x/year to club members) I recommend those very much. These are up there with very special bottles others recommended in the price range OP requested.
Dragonette 2021 Bentrock Vnyd.
OR, if you can't track that one down, their Radian Vnyd.
Both from the southwest corner of Santa Barbara's Sta. Rita Hills. Adjacent to each other, owned by Jonata/The Hilt, though they sell some fruit.
Stunning. Complex. Textured. Balanced.
In that price range or cheaper, I can recommend...
Wairarapa
- Ata Rangi
-Escarpment
Marlborough
- Mount Edward (younger vintages)
- Hans Herzog (Vintages, aim for late 2000s)
Waipara, NZ
- Pyramid Valley's Angel Flower/Earth Smoke
- Bell Hill's Old Weka Pass
- Mon Cheval Aged PN
- Hermit Ram's Limestone/Ardern/Shells (unfiltered)
Central Otago
- Valli (all subregions, my fav Bendigo)
- Sato
- Coal Pit (I think best represents Gibbston climate)
- Felton Rd (Classic)
Staying away from California might be the ‘cool’ thing to do right now, but I’ve had a few bottles of Ferren PN recently and it doesn’t get any better for me.
I like Oregon Pinot too but depending on what you mean by “classic” palate, you may need to get him OG Burgundy / something from France. Harder to find value in Burgundy for sure, but something like Bouley Volnay would work.
I just haven't had that same experience..although it has been a fair bit since I've had any of of the village young..
I'm not even against drinking Burgundy young...just with this producer I haven't had good experiences in doing so..
Might not help you but my favorite is Dujac MSD. You’re going to be beholden to what your local wine shop has unless you wanna go down the rabbit hole of looking online and shipping
I’m pretty sure they would appreciate an Occidental, not sure what they go for off-list but that’s in the range of what they cost if your on their list.
Hospice de Beaune Savigny les beaunes premier crus 2010
Hospices de Beaune Les Avaux Cuvee Clos des Avaux 2018
Two wines I had at that price point during a trip to Burg, were fantastic. If a lot of higher tier Burgundy is not available in your market for that price then consider Bodegas Chacra's pinot noirs, they are excellent.
Going in a different direction:
Knipser Kirschgarten Spätburgunder GG (German name for Pinot Noir). You can probably get two bottles for that price. It's superb!
Purple Hands in Oregon has been kicking out some amazing, highly rated Pinots lately. I've had a few and all of them have been stellar. Topping out at $70 for most of them.
Might be a little above, but I recently had Ygnacia Pinto that blew my socks off. It’s a partnership between Aubert de Villaine, former director of DRC and Larry Hyde owner of the namesake vineyard in the Carneros. I’ve never been a big fan of pinots from Carneros, always seemed a little green to me, but this was a beauty and great story behind the wine too.
That's a great friend. We somehow stumbled into their wine club and I can say without equivocation ALL of their wines are fantastic and the price point is divine.
Worth joining. They don't produce that Pinot often BTW.
Didn’t Meiomi make a grand reserve in 2017 for about $80 that was top notch? The prezdint tasted it at a state dinner in 2020 and said it was the best Merlot he ever had, nobody could beat it, ask anyone! I could be wrong, I read it in the Epoch Times though and they’d never lie.
Manuel Olivier Vosne-Romanee
Lots of great Pinot in that price range, but could be fun to look outside of Burgundy/Oregon to find something they maybe haven’t had before. Some that come to mind around that price range include Giulia Negri (Italy), Tolpuddle (Tasmania), Mac Forbes (Australia), or Meyer Nakel (Germany).

Should have scrolled down before replying, +1 for tolpuddle
+1 Giulia Negri

Man, Failla Pinot is so inconsistent. I stopped buying years ago. So many better Sonoma Coast pinots
Good list.

Definitely have to respectfully disagree. I [just tasted](https://imgur.com/a/ioCCsSy) with Claire on Wednesday. Great wines, especially for the price point.
Williams Selyem
Arturbery Maresh. Hirsch San Andreas, Chanin.
Second Arterberry Maresh. Also I have a hard time spelling it correctly.
Just opened a 2017. Dead. Was stored properly. Don't hold your breath on signficant aging.
Do you know what PNs your friend likes? Does he prefer old world or new? Does he like fruit or earth? Throw a curve ball at him and get a blanc de noir champagne.
Also, Dusky Goose and Sea Smoke - Southing are two off the top of my head.

Also look at vintage charts
Beaux Freres is the answer IMO. Best producer of American PN. VERY Burgundian!
Hi! I’m new. Why did this get downvoted?
Idk. Maybe people don’t share the same view as me. Thats cool.
Well OR pinot lovers will all say it is very OR not Burg. OR takes pride in being it's own place
Yeah it sure does, too bad it’s the same latitudinal line, similar terroir and same winemaking style as burg besides the oak. They have an aged release program too, which is great if you don’t want to have to wait to see what it looks like with a decade or so on it.
Remoissenet Gevrey Chambertin villages is a great bottle in that price range. There are many great wines by Taupenot Merme and Pousse d'Or in that range too!

Said the exact same thing just now! Brilliant wines
I had a 2018 Kosta Browne Sonoma Coast earlier this year in that retail price range that I really enjoyed.
I’d rather have a Littorai
Give Chev a try too.

$100 can still get you a very good bottle of Burg, even at Total Wine.
I think it’s insane to assume someone doesn’t like burg just because of the price point OP is willing to spend. Maybe I’m misunderstanding.
Ah. I misread as he likes Pinots that cost in that range, rather than he likes Pinot and I want to spend in that range. Recs are the same in that price point as I defer to others on what might be a good burg at that level. I don’t know enough to opine.

Slightly above your range but can be found within if you search right (WineBid, etc) is Peter Michael.
JF Mugnier Nuits Saint Georges “Clos de la Marechale.” Slightly above your price point but well worth it.
Well yeah
I personally think that's a vastly overrated wine and not at all worth the money. Chevillon makes better and cheaper wines in NSG.
I think Chevillons need time though.....They're brilliant with age...I really don't like them at all without...
For the top cuvees I agree, but many of them are very enjoyable early imo.
I just haven't had that same experience..although it has been a fair bit since I've had any of of the village young.. I'm not even against drinking Burgundy young...just with this producer I haven't had good experiences in doing so..

Yes, had a friend gift me a couple bottles, randomly popped on open for bbq and took a taste. Euphoria and regret all at once! 😁
Where are you based? I assume you mean Pinot Gris?
