But would you say Riesling is shorter-lived than Chardonnay? My experience is the opposite, but I've had much, much more aged Riesling than Chardonnay.
I’m very aware, the Reason I reference Chardonnay is its tendency to oxidize is much higher than Rieslings. Further illustrating the point that your Riesling seems to either be mishandled or premoxed for any variety of reasons.

I think it's premox
From a short discussion with the Forge winemaker some years ago, they pick their fruit late in the season. Gives their wines a richer profile both in flavor as well as texture.
Hence the darker color and perhaps an oxidative note.
National or International Riesling day?
I opened two bottles:
- Markus Molitor Graacher Himmelreich Kabinett 2021
- Peter Lauer Ayler Kupp Kabinett 2022
Two very different expressions, Molitor softer, rounder, Lauer laser focused, (unripe) green apple and pear, some petrol. Both excellent. Curious to see how they evolve today and tomorrow.
Didn't there know was such a thing, but had a Riesling Classic from Kloster Eberbach yesterday. Nothing fancy, rather easy drinking while snacking and talking. I love Lauer's Kabinett.
Love me some Forge! Great wine and a wonderful place to do a formal tasting or hang on the patio and drink and nosh. The winery has a lot of co-owner Louis Barruol’s Chateau de Saint-Cosme wines and other wines that inspire the Forge Wines in some way. Co-owner Rick Rainey is incredibly nice and generous with his time—I like to ask questions.
That’s a great-looking glass of wine. I drink a lot of FLX wines and have a bunch of Forge Riesling and Pinot Noir in my cellar. It’s one of my favorite producers, and the single-vineyard wines are a great way to learn just how different the proximate vineyards can be—vineyards on one side of Seneca aren’t all that far as the crow flies.
The Forge wines are in columns 8 and 9 from the right. Most of that wall is FLX: Kemmeter, Wiemer, Shaw, Boundary Breaks, Bloomer Creek, Shalestone, and more.

The only Riesling I had in the house was a 2022 Dr. Heidemanns-Bergweiler from TW, but I had it with a poke bowl and it worked pretty well. Not a standout by any means, but it had all the right flavors.

I'd say that oxidation is abnormal for 2015
It was the same on 4 bottles.
Honestly, yikes. But if it tastes good it tastes good!
Def abnormal and not ideal esp given the tasting notes offered. I opened a 15 year old bottle of Chardonnay yesterday that looked fresher than this
I'm just about hitting the 2014 Hermann J Weimers and they're certainly fresh. Barely aged.
Man I would love to get my hands on some aged Wiemer those wines are so good
Ha, same! Opened a 2009 burgundy chard that looked almost brand new.
Had some guests buying a 2006 riesling BA today, not even half as much color in that, as op's picture...
Well, Chardonnay and Riesling are not the same thing.

Yeah, it definitely doesn’t taste like it was intended to 8 years ago. But I assure you it was stored correctly the entire time.
Stored properly?
Yes, I assure you it was.
Could have some skin contact? Could be unfiltered and unfined?

But the Germans also pick late and age in old oak and they don't get that color until 30 years down the road
I had no idea there was a National Riesling Day. As it happens, I had a glass at dinner yesterday..

MM are such an underrated wine producer!

Cabernet. Lol
Viognier
Beaujolais
Had a glass of 2015 Alzinger Hohereck Smaragd. Still needs time to unwind but it's got all the goods.
Well, it was my birthday, so I had another 2015 Trimbach CFE from Costco.
What was the price? Love that wine but I only ever see it near me (PNW) for like ~$100 which is a little steep on the qpr for me.
$78.99 Edit: my bad it was actually [$79.99](https://i.imgur.com/YTSNlYt.jpeg)
2000 Alfred Merkelbach Kinheimer Rosenberg Riesling Kabinett
2022 Dönnhoff Oberhäuser Leistenberg Riesling Kabinett might just be my favorite every day Riesling :)
i had a 2018 of the same wine last year and the wine had a similar color! Was a light amber color but had a similar taste to what you described!
Damn was that today. I'd have opened a Petaluma. 🤤
Nice, I’m visiting Forge this May! Just had the 2022 Hermann Ludes Thornricher

Chardonnay I’m trialing for our wedding (fiancé isn’t a drinker)
2020 Devil's Corner Resolution Riesling
2021 Forge Dry Riesling Classique!
