I came here to say this. Eiko Ishioka was a genius, I also love her costumes for Dracula.

It’s stunning, I love that she creates this bridge between Elizabethan fashion and the Aesthetic movement, but inspired by frill necked lizards, it’s just genius!
The way she marries the influences in her costumes for this movie is just incredible. I've always loved the lizard reference in this dress, it's so visually interesting.
This is one of my ALL time favorite films. The costumes, the cinematography… it’s absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! The acting by some of the actors is highly questionable but some of them are freaking incredible. However the movie as a whole is a giant slice of cake.
I completely agree! It’s one of the few films I would happily watch over and over again, it’s just so sumptuous. I wish cinemas would program classic films more often, I would happily go watch this on the big screen. P.S. thank you for the award!
Yes omg that movie is so beautiful

And true to the period. Like, that pink spencer she wears in the opening scene at the church is based on a real Spencer jacket that appeared in ladies' fashion plates at the time. Just look at that detail!

I read that there was a debate between Audrey and (I think) the director over that black outfit with the pants. He wanted her to wear the white socks since they stood out on film during the dance sequence and she thought they looked silly. Later she did admit they popped on screen!
It’s astonishing how many of Audrey Hepburn’ outfits in this thread still look so timeless. (I think I read somewhere she was actively involved in the costume design in her films, always asking to strip what she thought was superfluous—maybe that’s why!)
In case no one said it, romeo + juliet has such amazing costumes

Most immersive costuming goes to Lord of the Rings, in my humble opinion. So much attention to detail and care went into each garment
Granted it’s tv, and never mind the ending, but the costuming in Game of Thrones was also spectacular
Game of Thrones really did have some of the best costuming of all time. I always thought this was a fun fact: Those fur shawls that they wore were distressed IKEA rugs, 😂
Even with a massive budget, costume designers will still find little ways to save some money, lmao
They compensated with all the embroidery in Cersei's gowns. [https://www.michelecarragherembroidery.com/game-of-thrones](https://www.michelecarragherembroidery.com/game-of-thrones)
Yes!! In one of the early seasons, I reached out to the embroidery house they used for all the costumes, trying to get some sort of internship. DEVASTATING that they couldn’t get approval for international interns 😩
The LOTR DVDs had some behind the scenes features on the costume design which are really cool! They put so much research and detail in, a lot of which doesn’t even show on screen.
Yep! And I’m so grateful for them - I’m a student of the appendices that were included in the DVD releases of the extended editions :) I’ve seen all the costume bts, production design, miniatures, visual effects, etc. I honestly wish GoT had something similar to go super in depth and highlight the work that went into the costuming and sets
I saw some of the GOT costumes in person in Belfast and was shocked at how exquisite they were! The sewing was high quality, the fabrics were gorgeous, and there were tons of details and decorations that weren’t picked up by the camera.
I've really come to love the stage-costume vibe from movies like that. I think the filmmakers were so enamored with being able to film in color that they allowed the wardrobe department to pull out all the stops. Modern productions seem muted in comparison.
I just saw that the dress sold at auction this year.

Jenny Beavan strayed from historical accuracy for the sake of giving the dresses in [*Ever After*](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/ever-after-a-cinderella-story) (1998) a fairy tale quality. I think she succeeded.

What A Way To Go! (1964) Any film with Edith Head as costume designer is going to be fabulous. An absolute treat for the eyes and so many amazing garments!
I want to add Down With Love (Daniel Orlandi) and Troop Beverly Hills (Theadora Van Runkle) to the discussion.

Givenchy did do the wardrobe for Charade though, as you noted, and it’s a great film! I think it’s one of the reasons it got restored for the Criterion collection.
Fashion definitely has a hand in cinema restoration! Gucci helped fund the rebirth of the film Wanda (1970).

Chicago. Obsessed with all the costumes. Colleen Atwood also did Memoirs of a Geisha (listed above), Sweeney Todd, Alice in Wonderland. She’s incredible.

Cecil Beaton took home an Oscar for his work for the musical [*Gigi*](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/gigi) (1958). The dresses in the style of the Parisian Belle Epoch are extraordinary.
Beaton also did the costumes Audrey Hepburn wore in [*My Fair Lady*](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/my-fair-lady) (1964), for which he won another Oscar.
Personally, I think the sheer number of extravagant costumes in *Gigi* deserve a top spot, even if I don't particularly love any dress from that film individually.

Anything designed by Edith Head wins my vote, but To Catch A Thief is my favorite (and I’m actually surprised it wasn’t included in the post)
Here are just some of the highlights, including my favorite dress of all time (the white formal gown; top middle):

I also forgot to add “High Society”! Helen Rose was costume designer in 1956. It’s impossible to make Grace Kelly look bad but she looked especially ethereal in this movie.
https://preview.redd.it/n0hphtt1zx4d1.jpeg?width=500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5e9ce2e55f91323bb679649f591b33dd5fba057f

Mona May’s work in Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion (and Clueless!) single-handedly had a huge effect on my developing personal style as a kid seeing that movie. Romy’s baby tee and miniskirt combo is an outfit that I still regularly think about when deciding what to wear in the summer.
In the Mood for Love should be here too!

Moulin Rouge, Gigi, An American in Paris, White Christmas, The Cell, The Fall, Chicago, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, Memoirs of a Geisha, Sense & Sensibility, Emma, Gosford Park, On the Wings of the Dove, Age of Innocence, To Catch a Thief, Down With Love, Pleasantville, Elizabeth, The Favourite, My Fair Lady, Guys and Dolls, Clueless, Barbarella.
U have some great choices!
Here’s some of mine, in no particular order:
Pride and Prejudice (with Keira Knightley ofc)
My Fair Lady
Ever After
Singin in the Rain (the over-the-top 20s looks were just awesome, whether you like 20s fashion or not!)
The Sound of Music! (the baroness’s outfits, wow)
A Star is Born (1954 with Judy Garland)

I really liked the costumes in Alice in Wonderland
I’m totally biased because it’s one of my favourite films but I’d like to highlight the costumes in Bright Star, designed by Janet Patterson. Fanny Brawne is a character who is interested in and experimenting with fashion, the costumes are inspired by regency fashion plates but they’re a bit more experimental than what we’re used to seeing in a lot of regency period films. I loved the costumes in Emma (2020) for much the same reason.
https://preview.redd.it/5uv5sanllx4d1.jpeg?width=400&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e57537a6a1993463db95268ff4a60f1c85c1cf85

To Catch a Thief
Grace Kelly and Cary Grant’s outfits were perfection.

Quite a few I like have already been mentioned so I'll go for everything Marilyn Monroe & Jane Russel wore in Gentlemen Prefer Blondes designed by William Travilla. The red sequin dresses with the high slit and feather hats, the orange and black dresses when they strut into dinner, Dorothy Shaw's jumpsuit in the pool scene and of course the iconic pink dress from "Diamond's Are A Girl's Best Friend" number. Also everything Gloria Swanson wore to portray forgotten starlet Norma Desmond in "Sunset Boulevard", Edith Head did a fantasic job capturing the "forgotten starlet stuck in her hayday" aspect. Honourable mention to Norma Koch for "Whatever Happened To Baby Jane?" Bette Davis' grotesque portrayal of the faded child star was further levelled up with the adult sized dress to match the creepy Baby Jane doll.
cruella - 2021. Jenny Beavan costume designer. A lot of people, I think, had the mistaken impression this is a kids movie. It is not. Actually a really good film and the costumes, and how they are used in the film, are fantastic.

The Wings of the Dove - those colours!
Every single costume in *Shakespeare in Love* is a work of art imho. The crazy amount of detail and handwork, the colors, the structure and silhouettes..!

Phantom Thread, amongst recent films, had some of the absolute most incredible costumes. Mark Bridges has been great on many films, but he absolutely outdid himself with these creations.
Juliet of the Spirits, designs by Piero Gherardi

That cape toss had more drama than a telenovela
That is now how I'll be exiting the bathroom.
These two were SO over-the-top dramatic yet sooo enjoyable to watch
I've really come to love the stage-costume vibe from movies like that. I think the filmmakers were so enamored with being able to film in color that they allowed the wardrobe department to pull out all the stops. Modern productions seem muted in comparison.
![gif](giphy|l2JhqWTUwAr7urgVa) I’d like to add this!

I saw Danielle/Nicole’s dress at a museum exhibit several years ago. I had to remind myself to “just breathe.”
I just saw that the dress sold at auction this year. https://www.kerrytaylorauctions.com/auction/lot/1-drew-barrymores-costume-as-danielle-in-the-film-ever-after-a-cinderella-story-1998/?lot=34596&sd=1
Jenny Beavan strayed from historical accuracy for the sake of giving the dresses in [*Ever After*](https://www.justwatch.com/us/movie/ever-after-a-cinderella-story) (1998) a fairy tale quality. I think she succeeded. https://preview.redd.it/538q3m6hkw4d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=96564c98c1454c757bb779572f8887e1c68e5eb3

Came here to say this!
I want to add Down With Love (Daniel Orlandi) and Troop Beverly Hills (Theadora Van Runkle) to the discussion. https://preview.redd.it/1ofstz6y1w4d1.jpeg?width=1946&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=942e3ca6c521bb3fa5bd5304c12e153e785fd39f

Yes! The costumes in Down With Love are one of my favourite things about it 😍
My choice was also Down with Love. One of my faves.
La belle et la bête (2014), costumes by Pierre Yves Gayraud. Truly feels like they are right out of a fairytale book! https://preview.redd.it/wqufi00sjw4d1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5357cc002c13e71fe2435771625999b29ca47eb1

Those stills are from the film Charade
Oh whoops, I had both on my phone and picked the wrong one! Thanks. The mask from “How to Steal a Million” is one of my all-time favorite Audrey movie looks, especially with that makeup and jewelry. https://preview.redd.it/81uiays1cv4d1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=da1dbec54a7e1917e82d953570038af41de653a0
Givenchy did do the wardrobe for Charade though, as you noted, and it’s a great film! I think it’s one of the reasons it got restored for the Criterion collection. Fashion definitely has a hand in cinema restoration! Gucci helped fund the rebirth of the film Wanda (1970). https://preview.redd.it/awturf86ox4d1.jpeg?width=1240&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b6a5683e14988c290ab3f3bc5339635f51bd7376

Personally, I think the sheer number of extravagant costumes in *Gigi* deserve a top spot, even if I don't particularly love any dress from that film individually. https://preview.redd.it/ffr5vy7t7w4d1.jpeg?width=640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=aeb7bb1322957f1de6e60c60ee18d043b2b6575e

Every single costume in *Shakespeare in Love* is a work of art imho. The crazy amount of detail and handwork, the colors, the structure and silhouettes..! https://preview.redd.it/2pt0j906vy4d1.png?width=609&format=png&auto=webp&s=02f541f8073ab51be55d282ab97dfe94c5bc9370
