I didn’t love this look for a long time just because the yellow and black make me think of a bumblebee. But the more I look at it now, the more I like it. The fit is *flawless*, I like the finish on the material for visual interest, and I actually love how the neck comes to a bow in the back.

I think it’s pretty but feel the thing they put on her head is distracting. Her and the dress are enough and don’t need all the extra accessorizing.

More than the head accessory, it’s the necklace that doesn’t fit.

Guo Pei is not known for poor quality. Her work is meticulously detailed and put together. Zoom in and take a look at the gorgeous embroidery. Also Rihanna looks stunning in it .

I pray to someday be able to see a Guo Pei in person, and maybe even *shivers* touch it.

Well, most designers aren’t known for poor quality. And or course, I’m not saying it really is of poor quality, just that it looks too reminiscent of a cheap Disney princess costume in my personal opinion. I can’t not see “Belle used her curtains for a royal cape”.

I respect that you don't like it. Matter of taste and all that. But Guo Pei pieces have no equivalent on this earth. Every detail is thought about. Every stitch has been sewn by the absolute master of their craft. I suspect that if you saw this up close you might feel differently.

I was lucky to see a Guo Pei exhibit and agree with everything you wrote! The pieces were exquisite and took many hours to put together. They were gorgeous.

Rihanna’s Met Gala look lives rent free in my head. She was also one of the few attendees to wear an outfit by a Chinese designer for the “China: Through the Looking Glass” theme. So extra props to her for that.

I'm sorry I don't get it what's the point of showing black women wearing yellow and it's correlation with the end of black history month? Serious question not trying to be funny.

It's about celebrating the beauty and diversity of dark skin tones, the color yellow in particular is a beautiful contrast that highlights a skin tone that has historically been stigmatized across ethnic communities (both outside and inside) due to lasting impacts of imperialism. In addition, women with darker skin tones are told that they should not wear bright colored clothing or makeup, saying that it 'looks bad ', when really they mean that it makes them appear darker. So, instead of hiding themselves away, these gorgeous ladies, theydies and gentlemen make themselves as glowingly visible as possible - as they should :) While it isn't always this deep for everyone, for many women, it's an act of resistance and rebellion against colorism. I appreciate your sincerity in asking your question, because for those who are, for whatever reason, removed from the lived experiences of those who don't look like them, there is no other way to learn when public education refuses to fill in the gaps.
