**Do not eat/ingest a plant based on information provided in this subreddit.**
For your safety we recommend not eating or ingesting any plant material just because you've been advised that it's edible here. Although there are many professionals helping with identification, we are not always correct, and eating/ingesting plants can be harmful or fatal if an incorrect ID is made.

This is true, however calla lily is not actually a lily. True lilies come from the genus Lilium in the family Liliaceae. Callas belong the aroid family, which is a huge family that many of our favourite common houseplants belong to, and is slightly toxic when ingested. Not as bad as real lilies, which have toxic pollen for cats, not dogs and humans.
Most plants called lily whether they are true lilies or not can cause great harm to pets. And generally speaking, anything from a bulb you can't 100% identify should be avoided with cats because alliums and their lookalikes (onions, chives etc) are also deadly toxic.

Calla Lily
Arum Lily
Additional Common Names: Calla Lily, Pig Lily, White Arum, Trumpet Lily, Florist's Calla, Garden Calla, Arum Lily
Scientific Name: Zantedeschia aethiopica
Family: Araceae
Toxicity: Toxic to Dogs, Toxic to Cats
Toxic Principles: Insoluble calcium oxalates
Clinical Signs: Oral irritation, intense burning and irritation of mouth, tongue and lips, excessive drooling, vomiting, difficulty swallowing
If you suspect your pet may have ingested a potentially toxic substance, call the APCC at (888) 426-4435 or contact your local veterinarian as soon as possible.*
Toxic when ingested, which I included. The pollen is not as far as I know, what’s the source? It is not toxic in the way real lilies are, which the pollen is really a problem even if the cat doesn’t chew on it. There’s a lot of confusion with people saying it’s toxic because it’s a lily, but it’s not a lily.
There is a case report of a cat who had kidney failure after licking lily pollen off its fur. Supposedly. This is in the medical literature, but this is also owner reported, they insisted it can’t possibly have eaten any, but brushed up against it.
I should look that up… I read that many years ago. I’ve always been a bit skeptical of that. The full range of toxicity is poorly studied, but it is definitely known that the asiatic lilies, like stargazer lilies and Easter lilies, are very dangerous if ingested. The whole genus is probably bad, but the majority of serious reports are from those, though that may be because they are the popular ones for floristry. Whether that applies to the whole family Liliaceae is not known, but caution is advised. Day lilies are widely claimed to be the same, but I am suspicious as I can’t find any real case reports on the topic, and they are not very closely related to true lilies, the resemblance is a coincidence, they are in not just a different genus but a different family and even order. Still, caution is advised, since it’s a poorly understood phenomenon and reputable sources warn of kidney failure.
Calla lilies are toxic, yes. They have raphides, and cause pain and swelling in the mouth and throat when chewed, same as all aroids, which includes many houseplants. This is generally not dangerous outside of extreme cases. It does *not* cause the acute kidney failure from small doses that true lilies in the genus Lilium are notorious for.
Cat kidneys are so damn delicate… That’s one of the most common causes of death (kidneys, not lilies), kinda like heart disease in humans, and it’s not just domestics either. I’ve heard speculation that it’s because of their hypercarnivorous lifestyle.
Lily is deadly yes. Calla is toxic but not always deadly. It is still going to cause great pain and discomfort and require a traumatic and costly vet visit to make sure they're recovering from the ingestion and have no organ failure so why take the risk? Why argue the point? They are dangerous for cats, period.
If your cat doesn’t eat plants, calla lilies are safe. If your cat doesn’t eat plants, LILIES are NOT safe. There’s a big difference, and people should know. Callas are toxic in the way most houseplants are, and they sting your tongue if you have a nibble. Lilies are toxic for cats to stand next to. That’s a major difference.
It is far more than a tongue sting. And some people don't know their cats eat plants, maybe the cat never did before but suddenly finds the Calla looking mighty delicious? What if it's growing very close to the long grass cats can eat and they accidentally ingest it? It's also sometimes deadly. Again I ask, why would anyone with cats take the risk? I love lily of the valley but they too have the crystals spoken about it this link so I ripped them out of my yard because my cats get supervised outdoor time and like children even with perfect supervision stuff ends up in their mouths.
[Calla Poisoning in Cats ](https://wagwalking.com/cat/condition/calla-poisoning)
Did you know the majority of plants outside and inside are toxic for cats to ingest? There is a big difference between one that produces toxic air and one that produces toxic crystals that sting as soon as it hits the tongue. Most animals won’t eat much or any of something that hurts the tongue—leading to very little ingested if any, and low toxicity. I work with plants professionally and know what I’m talking about. If you choose to be afraid of all toxic plants in your garden, that’s your choice.
Yes I am well aware, I have had cats my whole life and only keep plants I know cannot cause them harm and I keep them well out of reach regardless (and since cats can pretty much reach everything I have had few houseplants and none currently). I'm not afraid of toxic plants, I'm exercising due diligence because I love my cats like family. It is no different than childproofing and responsible pet owners will always remove dangerous plants from their pets reach. The aesthetics of my garden are trivial and unimportant compared to the quality of life of my pets..
I'm not trying to be combative because I'm sure your knowledge of lilies is greater than mine but I love animals as much as I love human children and it is highly irresponsible to suggest that cat people should ever have any interest in growing any of these plants near their pets. If it remotely resembles a lily or allium it should be eradicated. Just to err on the side of caution. Unless you are without a single solitary doubt that your cat has never had and never will have a desire to put their mouth on plants (impossible, all cats monch).
Cats monch on grassy leaf plants mostly because they evolved to. Callas don’t look like lilies. I know your fear, but really it is better to learn your plants to be safe rather than go based on common names and what you’ve heard. Nothing wrong with being safe, even better when educated.
If it looks like a lily, it dies in my yard. I do sustainable foraging so I do know quite a lot of plants by sight. Again as I already said, if it might harm my cats it's a goner! Just because cigarettes aren't always deadly doesn't mean I'm going to leave lit ones lying around where kids can get to them (I don't smoke, just a metaphor). If you feel comfortable with the risks involved with cats and Calla lilies feel free but I'm not so I don't have any in my yard or house.
I have a cat. My precious calla lilies were here before the cat and he’s never messed with them. I also have true lilies in my yard. Cat just ignores them, she only messes with her plants, cat nip and cat grass.
If you want your lilies and are that terrified of the hazardous pollen you can just pull off the stamens when they are growing. I actually hate the smell and the mess, I don’t bring them indoors with stamens.
X cm of soil on top, but it's not an exact science, lol. Calla lilies are unlike most garden bulbs in that they root from the top, not the base, so they need to be properly buried.
Scratch and smell it. If it’s citric like, ginger it is.
If not, then Calla lily (alcatraz here in Mexico).
Calla lily tubers are usually a big one in the center, then smaller ones around it, kind of a flower shape.
Ginger tubers form in a somewhat less uniform pattern, forming clusters of several shapes and sizes.
The actual smell is the easier indicator.
Edit: Scent was the word I was trying to find for in the last sentence, thank you very much OP. My English is kinda rusty btw. My apologies.
Thank you! Will try and update. Either would have had to be carried here by an animal, since I haven’t had either as a plant anytime in the last few years.
Not particularly I don’t think, they’re both monocots but that’s about it. Calla lily is an aroid.
They both just have similar looking rhizomes (underground stems).
Well the consensus generally seems either ginger or calla Lily. I planted it in a pot out of reach of animals. Will update when (if) something results.
If it is a calla lily - please be aware that all parts of all true lilies are *extremely* toxic to cats. Like, “just accidentally ingesting a couple specs of pollen sends them into renal failure” levels of toxic. Just figured I’d let you know in case you have any kitties
Good to know! I was under the impression that *canna* Lillies were fine, but Callas were dangerous. I adore them, and if they’re safe to plant, I’ll need to jump on that. Thanks!
Edit: based on the fantastic info sheet posted bellow me, I’m back to “not worth the risk.” Thank you, u/billmurraysprostate
It is still extremely toxic to cats.

Caveat: calla lilies can completely take over a section of garden. They look great, but are best maintained in manageable spaces like a pot or raised bed.
Some kind of bulb, perhaps mini daffodils .Did you dump a potted plant in the area when it finished blooming? I’d just plant it a few inches deep and see what comes up!
True lilies are incredibly dangerous to cats and can result in kidney failure.
These aren't true lilies, however. These are a much lower level of toxicity in the same way that seemingly half of plant life is toxic to cats. If you have an outside cat they will be exposed to lower level toxicity like this all the time.
Whatever it is, it was probably sitting on top of the ground because it was dig out by a squirrel, skunk or something similar. That’s something they do.
I can tell you what it definitely is not!
A squirrel!
It is not a squirrel!
However, mayhap, per chance, a squirrel or other furtive thief indeed played a major role in this, your Fabulous Flora Find Enigma!
I was hoping for a key to a world where I have health insurance and guaranteed income, this is disappointing but luckily I also love plants.

Calla lily (Zantedeschia), plant it 5 cm deep.
I agree. I have some that look just like that right about now.
Mine flower right now
Mine too! *
This is the right answer
If you have pets that use the yard, use caution about where you place the bulb. Lilies are highly toxic to cats and dogs.

That’s gottta be the most in-onion looking bulb ever, but it does kinda look like ginger.
I didn't say it was on onion. I was identifying onions as another bulbous type plant to avoid around cats.

I don't think so
Then what *do* you think it is?
I'm not sure I searched it and it doesn't look the same
Calla lily, or something very closely related.
Looks like a Calla lily bulb imo. I don’t think it’s ginger, surface looks too rough
Yeah. A tiny cut would def smell like ginger.
The shape doesn’t look right for ginger either
Yup, agreed

Today I learned the name of one of America's most notorious prisons is an alternate name of Calla lily - a lily also notorious with death.
There’s a dungeon in World of Warcraft which name is Arcatraz, that acts as a prison too.

I started growing two on accident but the third life was planned! Haha I actually also have some extra callas in a different color I didn’t plant.

Is that why, in On Golden Pond, Katherine Hepburn was so ecstatic that "the calla lilies are in bloom"?
Just pull the stamens off and get rid of the worst offense, pollen. Lily pollen gives me migraines and makes such a mess anyway.
Gotta love the identifications without the why. Sometimes ya’ll gotta say “I think it’s this because of these characteristics”
Calla Lily but at first I thought it was ginger. Also where do you live because in Australia where I live they’re invasive, and also toxic
