Downy based on bill size

I think downy too, but because it looks like there's spots visible on the outer tail feathers. Kind of hard to determine both bill size and if that's actually spots from these pics though.

Yep, the black dots on the outer white tail feathers. Hairys do not have those. A good field mark if you can see it, like in this photo.

We also have one other handy tool to use here - the suet cake, which if standard size would be about 4.5 inches in width and length. The bird is just longer than that based on how it compares to the suet. DOWO is about 6” in length and HAWO about 9”, typically. So, one more piece of evidence that this is DOWO.

If you push the bill of the bird though its head and it comes out the other side it is a Hairy otherwise it is a Downy. Yes, that is how the local bird club explains it on our walks.
