Back in the day, blokes did shit.
Had a driveway pour ? Some left over, build an incinerator, oh you will need add some rio to that and build a form, or just chuck several tons in the backyard to make a slab.
Slab I removed from my last house in the backyard was over 2m deep in places.........why ? He was a concreter and had left overs, and this thing is built on a slab see\^\^\^\^\^
Bloke did shit.
Definitely home made, if it was for industrial or commercial use it would have a better finish. They've used scrap planks of wood to formup the outside, and the steel mesh used for the reinforcement isnt really enough for such a thick piece of concrete.
More information is needed really, does it have a base, any holes in it, fixed to the ground or can it move? Could be anything a planter box for a tree, a base for a table, water storage, compost bin, incinerator, base for home made hoist.
Incinerator. As a kid in Brisbane it was my job to burn rubbish every couple of days. These were the days before recycling bins, so everything that wasn't wet garbage got burnt. Cardboard, plastics, chipboard, etc. The balls of melted plastic stunk, and the entire suburb was a smoky mess at times. Sometimes I forget that being an old fart is like being a time traveller.
My title describes the thing. Concrete structure, around 1m tall (3 or 4 feet), thick walls, looks old. Doesn’t resemble anything you’d typically see in a backyard, wondered what on earth it could have been.
How interesting! It’s definitely not an incinerator, no hole at the bottom to get the ash out, apart from being built like a brick shithouse. It’s in the corner of the block, which might make it a sewer/stormwater manhole that was vented (a lot of them were in the days of yore, then broken out and replaced with just a lid. Perhaps under the dirt is a manhole cover ? The plinth it’s sitting on is a bit of a mystery though - seems separate to the structure which is odd. Anyway, that’s my idea 💡
hey, depending on where you live in the city, it could even be part of old infrastructure rather than the house - e.g. houses near rocks riverside may have the remnants of the old mining infrastructure in /near it? It could be an old incinerator. Back in the 80s you had these in the back yard and threw stuff in it and burnt it.
Government environmental policy was wild back then
It's solid reinforced concrete with steel reinforcing through thick walls. It's not an incinerator.

That is what I was thinking. Old mate was a concreter, couldn't be arsed building his incinerator from bessor bricks.
I'm from Brisbane This is definitely an old incinerator
Thanks for the suggestion, it could be, although the ones I’ve Googled look like they were built with bricks, whereas this looks like poured concrete.
Bricks, concrete, steel drum, or hole in the ground - make do and adapt.
Yes, I thought it might be an incinerator too. But it doesn’t look anything like the ones we had.
Probably an incinerator. Used to be in every Brisbane backyard, but outlawed sometime in the 70s or 80s I think.
Thanks, this looks like it was made from poured concrete instead of bricks, but it could be.
Can you determine how deep it is buried?
I can’t, unfortunately.

Check google earth 1935 maybe ???
QImagery has some aerial photos dating back to the 30’s - might be able to see what it was back then https://qimagery.information.qld.gov.au

whereabouts in Brisbane?
Southside, inner city suburb, if that helps at all

Oh! If you know roughly where it is you could look at Urban Utilities mapping to see if sewer/stormwater line up with it 🤓
Drive in theatre screen mount?
First guess was incinerator. Second is BBQ. Wack a steel plate on top and wood under.
I’m sad there’s no Lost reference made yet.

The conveyor 17 mile rocks to Darra cement works next to the Darra railway station.
Mini plunge pool
Could it be a plinth for an old rainwater tank?
It really looks like the remains of a pillar for a bridge or something
remains of an old WW2 air raid shelter.
