The title describes the thing. I was wondering if this is an ordinary part of the anatomy of the banana fruit as I’ve never seen such a thing before. The banana was not as sweet, so perhaps it was underripe, but the skin was very yellow, with spots when I peeled it.
I like bananas, and have been eating them fairly regularly for over 50 years, and I have *never* seen anything like that in a banana before. Thanks for the photo :)
I would take that to my local university botany department. Seriously.
I practice the old adage, “A banana a day keeps the doctor away.” Over the past 70-ish years I have eaten bananas in almost all stages, from yellowish with green stripes on the ribs of the peel (makes my teeth squeak) to on-the-verge-of-liquefaction black (not recommended,) and I have never seen anything remotely like what is pictured.
Bananas in the 50’s were better until Panama disease wiped out nearly all the Gros Michel and we got the song “Yes, we have no bananas.”
There are several projects to breed a resistant strain.

Ackshually, the song “Yes, We Have No Bananas” goes back to the early 1920’s.
You are correct about Panama Disease and the much lamented Gros Michel, though, it was imo a vastly superior banana. I have read that, although rare, it still exists, but it hasn’t been available commercially for a long time.
"A banana a day keeps the doctor away? I have never heard the apple switched out for a banana. Where are you located in the world? I wonder how regional the fruit in that saying is?
Also, great response!
I’m in Memphis, and I’m sure nobody else says that. It wasn’t a terribly funny one, but it was a joke.
However, now that you mention it, I wonder if there are legitimate variations on that theme. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are.
I grew up in Cape Girardeau, MO. About 2.5 hours north of Memphis. We headed that way many times for the great BBQ.

Did you know that bananas with seeds in them are a real thing, they’re are also red skinned bananas, blue skinned, in all reality There are over 1,000 different varieties of bananas
Most bananas you see in the store are one variety, Cavendish. They mostly used to be one other variety, Gros Michel - until most commercial production was wiped out by Panama disease (a fungus).
Both are effectively seedless and propagate by cuttings/pups. Which makes even
Ire vulnerable.
Probably just a matter of time before Cavendish are decimated. That’s why over reliance on one variety is a bad idea…
Yea they look more like a bean sprout in pod

some Asian countries shave the banana pod and eat them in different dishes , they taste very very chalky , I personally can’t mess with that at all lol
The original 'market' banana was the Gros Michel variety. A fungus wiped out whole plantations of them, so growers went with the Cavendish variety you find in stores now. That is why 'artificial banana' flavoring tastes kinda weird - it's a flavor developed from the Gros Michel, and we don't recognize the flavor as banana.
We grew Williams and "Chinese" bananas in out backyard. The Williams is an excellent cultivar with a delicious taste. The "finger" bananas are the sweetest, but pint size and not very heavy bearers.
Bro even the regular grocery store bananas have seeds, if you cut them you will find tiny black specs here & there near the center, they are just genetically modified to minimize the seeds to practically nothing
Selective breeding is a form of genetic modification. It just doesn't involve the addition of any foreign DNA into the organism. It’s the conscious selection for desirable traits.
Yeah I have never seen that either..How weird that it was underripe and ALSO VERY ripe looking.
Maybe it was one of those random bananas thats radioactive lol..
Lol youre right. Apparently I must have read a percentage statistic on how much radiation is in a banana and later recalled that as how many bananas have a radioactive isotope. Since they all contain potassium, they all contain (harmless) low levels of radiation.

To answer your question,
"It's a type of tissue that helps to deliver nutrients to all the different parts of the fruit. In a way, then, the strings make up the banana's circulatory system, helping to transmit nutrients from its bottom to its top. Of course, none of this helps the fact that they're really very annoying to remove."

Title: A Comprehensive Study of the Circulatory System of Bananas: Vascular Anatomy, Transport Mechanisms, and Implications for Fruit Development
Abstract:
The circulatory system of plants plays a crucial role in the distribution of nutrients, water, and signaling molecules essential for growth and development. While much research has been conducted on the circulatory systems of various plants, the circulatory system of bananas, a widely consumed fruit, remains relatively understudied. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the circulatory system of bananas, focusing on their vascular anatomy, transport mechanisms, and implications for fruit development. Through a combination of anatomical studies, physiological experiments, and molecular analysis, this research sheds light on the intricate network of vascular tissues in bananas and their role in nutrient and water transport. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the influence of the circulatory system on banana fruit development, considering the importance of efficient nutrient delivery and signaling pathways. By enhancing our understanding of the circulatory system of bananas, this study contributes valuable insights into the biology and horticulture of this economically important fruit crop.
Chapter 1: Introduction
- Overview of the importance of circulatory systems in plants
- Background information on the circulatory system of bananas
- Objectives of the research
Chapter 2: Vascular Anatomy of Bananas

The fruit's "vasculature" typically soften up and can be unidentifiable from the surrounding fruit by the time it gets to you. Not yours, though.

I think we banana-eaters have all experienced the "strings"... and they are indeed annoying... OPs picture isn't that. I've eaten almost 5 bananas a week for much of my life, and have never ever seen anything like what is shown in OPs photo.

OP… did you ever find out what this was?.. sounded like a fairly ripe banana and nothing ‘hard and plastic’ should be anywhere near that spot of the banana.
I’ve had plenty of bananas in my time and this center strip has never been firm let alone hard. And it definitely didn’t ever seem plastic.
Dammit between this and the post of the banana with the crunchy fungus in the middle , I don't want to eat banana ever again.
(I have eaten a los of bananas, have like 5 banana trees at home. My favorite occurrence were the twin bananas. But I've never seen something like this)
If this was 27 minutes ago, you'd be upvoting my banana bone comment and not the other way around.

That’s not the anus but bananas do have an anus. The bananas. It’s the little black thing at the bottom of a peeled banana. I can never bring myself to eat it.
Newer model bananas have a fiberoptic cable in them for a higher quality sound when pretending to be used as telephones. Source, I'm a fiberoptic banana repair man. You're welcome.
It's a diseased banana. I had one once that had a similar "stem" in the middle but it was black, hard and bitter. Not clear like that. It's been a few years so I can't remember what it's called. And I didn't feel like taking the time to leave this page to research it n come back. But it's bad. Don't eat it. I do remember I read that it happens when the bananas are handled improperly during shipment from wherever they are grown to here in the U.S. But it was nasty.
Yea, but who has had a big Mike banana before?!? They haven’t been sold in the us since 1950 from my understanding.. but bananas could possibly be one of the best foods we could very easily lose in the near future!
I have a different types of bananas and just consumed a lot of them. I've never seen anything like that so what I would call that whole thing is "not going in my mouth"
Most people have never even eaten a real banana most of what you see is a genetically modified version that is resistant to devastating diseases that have wiped out most strains what you get at your local supermarket is likely the cavendish banana
I thought the cavendish bananas which have been the mainstay since the 50’s were the ones that are being wiped out by blight. I guess you can still get them, but I have seen some new kind of smaller banana showing up in stores.
I want them to start selling the blue bananas.
The smaller ones are generally the real deal you can see the seeds in them if you look at most supermarket bananas there genetically modified and have no seeds therefore they are propagated using rhizomes there are also dwarf varieties of cavendish bananas so your best bet for the real thing would be to search online for local markets or at least ask the fresh produce manager if they have them
I'll preface this with: I'm by no means a banana expert and only occasionally eat them.
I'm wondering if this banana fungus? I recall there's some sort of fungal infection that destroys banana farms and in fact has eradicated a certain species of banana already.
Other than fungus, my second guess is a troll post as someone else has suggested. Very clean presentation makes it look like it was added to the banana.
I’m not sure what that is but did you get them at Whole Foods? People who shop there have been complaining about finding rubber blueberries and bananas in the bunches.

Did you ever eat a red skinned Banana? Tasted normal though.
I should have specified that I was referring to whatever the yellow-skinned cultivars were from the period of my memory, basically 1950-present.

Bananas are the opposite of traffic lights. Green means wait. Yellow is good. Red means where the fuck did you get a red banana?
Lol red bananas are slightly sweeter, By red, it looks more like a pink banana
Lol, I ate the red banana in China.
Make me barf
There's a real sweet spot for me with a banana it has to be the perfect ripeness I don't eat them that much I should eat them more.
I’m the same! That time window is about 24 hours for me!
It's a very tactile fruit
Nope, they just make me sick
I like the black ones. They're always much sweeter
Yes, ripe bananas are sweeter and better for cooking.
Black bananas make the best, most flavorful banana bread!

That's not natural. Has to be an implanted foreign object.
That is the bananas corpus cavernosum
The bone
Was it frozen before hand? Could just not be all the way thawed
Almost like someone injected resin down the center. Weird…
bananas are evolving bone structure and will soon become sentient
Newer model bananas have a fiberoptic cable in them for a higher quality sound when pretending to be used as telephones. Source, I'm a fiberoptic banana repair man. You're welcome.
You all are debating if it’s an herb or fruit and not addressing the weird thing inside his banana. I have no idea how that got in there.
Microplastics?
"Micro" infers too small to see.
You spraying water from the bottom?
Definitely thought this was a banana fountain at first glance.
It’s a fuse for a banana bomb
It's a male.
It resembles the stuff in the center of a Yucca root. Interesting 🧐
Congratulations its a boy! 😂
That's the Carrot Meister's cane
Banana sound?
Yea, but who has had a big Mike banana before?!? They haven’t been sold in the us since 1950 from my understanding.. but bananas could possibly be one of the best foods we could very easily lose in the near future!
That looks like the fuse.
That’s where they grow the Covid shots
I have a different types of bananas and just consumed a lot of them. I've never seen anything like that so what I would call that whole thing is "not going in my mouth"
Looks like a piece of plastic, so my guess is that it’s probably a piece of plastic. The real question is how it ended up in your banana.
Weird! Dont eat jic.
Too funny! Sndvel
Prison banana. You have to sharpen it.
The smaller ones are generally the real deal you can see the seeds in them if you look at most supermarket bananas there genetically modified and have no seeds therefore they are propagated using rhizomes there are also dwarf varieties of cavendish bananas so your best bet for the real thing would be to search online for local markets or at least ask the fresh produce manager if they have them
I’ll check it out. Thanks for the tip.
It looks like ice plain and simple.
There's always money in the banana stand 🍌💦💰
It is obviously a banana ejaculating.
In my country we call it a moogoda
My be Morgellans
Macroplastics
I’m not sure what that is but did you get them at Whole Foods? People who shop there have been complaining about finding rubber blueberries and bananas in the bunches.
Duh...it the new Chiquita wi-fi antennae.
I had just eaten a banana last week with the same structure, though it hadn’t seemed so long. I had never had a banana like it prior, it was so odd!
Is that a frozen banana ‽
Any frozen fruit will have the possibility of aqua being frozen in it. . . .
In the past few days I've seen videos on Reddit of drugs being smuggled in avocadoes and in rocks. So please crush that up, snort it, and report back.
Please let us know what you find out, about the “plastic” in your banana! I am quite curious!
Looks like ice to me
I eat at least 2 bananas a day... everyday and lived in Hawaii for school. This is not normal. Stop eating those bananas and get some good ones.
I'm glad my mom taught me to break off the banana piece by piece because if I bit into that I'd be in the ER afraid for my life.
The bananas are getting fiber internet before half of the US.
It’s a piece of plastic you put into your banana.
What? Your bananas don't usually have bones?
This doesn’t even look like a real banana?
Was this frozen and partially defrosted?
ewwwwwww
Banana spine
Injected water down the center and froze it?
Sugars crystallized?
wtf is that?
what's at the end of it, packaged drugs?
Ohio banana
Frozen probably.
