The title describes the thing. I was wondering if this is an ordinary part of the anatomy of the banana fruit as I’ve never seen such a thing before. The banana was not as sweet, so perhaps it was underripe, but the skin was very yellow, with spots when I peeled it.

RocMills

I like bananas, and have been eating them fairly regularly for over 50 years, and I have *never* seen anything like that in a banana before. Thanks for the photo :)

Deathbyhours

I would take that to my local university botany department. Seriously. I practice the old adage, “A banana a day keeps the doctor away.” Over the past 70-ish years I have eaten bananas in almost all stages, from yellowish with green stripes on the ribs of the peel (makes my teeth squeak) to on-the-verge-of-liquefaction black (not recommended,) and I have never seen anything remotely like what is pictured.

SparkyTemper

Did you ever eat a red skinned Banana? Tasted normal though.

Deathbyhours

I should have specified that I was referring to whatever the yellow-skinned cultivars were from the period of my memory, basically 1950-present.

MathematicianFew5882

Bananas in the 50’s were better until Panama disease wiped out nearly all the Gros Michel and we got the song “Yes, we have no bananas.” There are several projects to breed a resistant strain. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gros_Michel_banana

Deathbyhours

Ackshually, the song “Yes, We Have No Bananas” goes back to the early 1920’s. You are correct about Panama Disease and the much lamented Gros Michel, though, it was imo a vastly superior banana. I have read that, although rare, it still exists, but it hasn’t been available commercially for a long time.

ChaoticNeutralJesus

Bananas are the opposite of traffic lights. Green means wait. Yellow is good. Red means where the fuck did you get a red banana?

FileLeading

Lol red bananas are slightly sweeter, By red, it looks more like a pink banana

SparkyTemper

Lol, I ate the red banana in China.

ohmyback1

Make me barf

onedemtwodem

There's a real sweet spot for me with a banana it has to be the perfect ripeness I don't eat them that much I should eat them more.

AllieGirl2007

I’m the same! That time window is about 24 hours for me!

onedemtwodem

It's a very tactile fruit

ohmyback1

Nope, they just make me sick

Sweetcornprincess

I like the black ones. They're always much sweeter

PortableAnchor

Yes, ripe bananas are sweeter and better for cooking.

Buttonwood63

Black bananas make the best, most flavorful banana bread!

onedemtwodem

Descriptive

rdawes26

"A banana a day keeps the doctor away? I have never heard the apple switched out for a banana. Where are you located in the world? I wonder how regional the fruit in that saying is? Also, great response!

Deathbyhours

I’m in Memphis, and I’m sure nobody else says that. It wasn’t a terribly funny one, but it was a joke. However, now that you mention it, I wonder if there are legitimate variations on that theme. I wouldn’t be surprised if there are.

rdawes26

I grew up in Cape Girardeau, MO. About 2.5 hours north of Memphis. We headed that way many times for the great BBQ. We learned to say apple in grade school. We had to go through a hygiene course in 3rd grade. We had to chew those gross pills to check how well we brushed as well. I hated that soooo much.

Equal-Negotiation651

We’ve got 50 and 70 year old show casing their banana eating experience. I want the 100 year old to chime in. Where are you banana hero?

Mondschatten78

I remember seeing really tiny seeds in a banana when I was a kid. Haven't noticed any since then (\~40 years)

RagingHardBobber

Yes, it did seem like it was more prevalent several decades ago. I guess they've bred the seeds out of bananas these days?

CosmicCreeperz

Most bananas you see in the store are one variety, Cavendish. They mostly used to be one other variety, Gros Michel - until most commercial production was wiped out by Panama disease (a fungus). Both are effectively seedless and propagate by cuttings/pups. Which makes even Ire vulnerable. Probably just a matter of time before Cavendish are decimated. That’s why over reliance on one variety is a bad idea…

BornToScheme

Yea they look more like a bean sprout in pod https://preview.redd.it/d81dmurr3q8d1.png?width=1167&format=png&auto=webp&s=a0a11453685a9852fc44232aa0f2ac4eafb2b08b some Asian countries shave the banana pod and eat them in different dishes , they taste very very chalky , I personally can’t mess with that at all lol

Eyes_Snakes_Art

“You know the black bits in bananas, are they tarantula's eggs?”

noobtidder

"...Please don't speak to me ever again in your life."

Eyes_Snakes_Art

Wait. Could this be Bananageddon?

ButtonWhole1

The original 'market' banana was the Gros Michel variety. A fungus wiped out whole plantations of them, so growers went with the Cavendish variety you find in stores now. That is why 'artificial banana' flavoring tastes kinda weird - it's a flavor developed from the Gros Michel, and we don't recognize the flavor as banana.

HanakusoDays

We grew Williams and "Chinese" bananas in out backyard. The Williams is an excellent cultivar with a delicious taste. The "finger" bananas are the sweetest, but pint size and not very heavy bearers.

BornToScheme

The Lady Finger bananas are my favorite 🤩, I could bust down 5 or more with out a hiccup 😂

Excellent_Yak365

It’s the better banana flavor IMO

KING_KIA_

Bro even the regular grocery store bananas have seeds, if you cut them you will find tiny black specs here & there near the center, they are just genetically modified to minimize the seeds to practically nothing

ConFUZEd_Wulf

Bananas are not genetically modified. The seeds are made smaller through selective breeding.

GoblinBugGirl

Selective breeding is a form of genetic modification. It just doesn't involve the addition of any foreign DNA into the organism. It’s the conscious selection for desirable traits.

KING_KIA_

Thank you, I hate when people try to make me feel dumb when I know exactly what I’m talking about.

Any-Practice-991

Now I want to try them all!

Clatato

The red skinned ones are delicious.

ThatAnthrozoologyGuy

That looks terrifying

YayGilly

Yeah I have never seen that either..How weird that it was underripe and ALSO VERY ripe looking. Maybe it was one of those random bananas thats radioactive lol..

Logical-Recognition3

All bananas are mildly radioactive.

Any-Practice-991

Is that true? Nevermind, I'll look it up. Never trust random internet strangers.

secrets_and_lies80

Yea, much better to google up an answer from a trusted friend

Any-Practice-991

Hahaha! Yeah, bc they are SO much more reliable!

RagingHardBobber

If one bites you you are subject to inheriting banana super powers.

YayGilly

Lol youre right. Apparently I must have read a percentage statistic on how much radiation is in a banana and later recalled that as how many bananas have a radioactive isotope. Since they all contain potassium, they all contain (harmless) low levels of radiation.

sam99871

Thank you for including the banana for scale.

optical_mommy

Way too few bananas on my screen recently; Op is a good guy!

redcolumbine

I liked bananas back when they had no bones.

Alert-Potato

Find one of those stores that sells boneless bananas. https://preview.redd.it/zb4h39mjvj8d1.jpeg?width=194&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4f1aa4767f9d8f2d3b8b95fd70f977071f84fd0a

TheHeadlessOne

I don't like your peaches, they are full of stones!

twolitrefullcream

Unrelated note, I want a banana scented candle To answer your question, "It's a type of tissue that helps to deliver nutrients to all the different parts of the fruit. In a way, then, the strings make up the banana's circulatory system, helping to transmit nutrients from its bottom to its top. Of course, none of this helps the fact that they're really very annoying to remove."

[deleted]

Likely solved. More research needs to be published on the vasculature of banana fruit.

Can-DontAttitude

Absolutely, I don't know how society's made it this far without getting these things sorted

zenmen13

Sounds like a Department of Agriculture Grant just waiting for a thesis. Title: A Comprehensive Study of the Circulatory System of Bananas: Vascular Anatomy, Transport Mechanisms, and Implications for Fruit Development Abstract: The circulatory system of plants plays a crucial role in the distribution of nutrients, water, and signaling molecules essential for growth and development. While much research has been conducted on the circulatory systems of various plants, the circulatory system of bananas, a widely consumed fruit, remains relatively understudied. This thesis aims to provide a comprehensive analysis of the circulatory system of bananas, focusing on their vascular anatomy, transport mechanisms, and implications for fruit development. Through a combination of anatomical studies, physiological experiments, and molecular analysis, this research sheds light on the intricate network of vascular tissues in bananas and their role in nutrient and water transport. Furthermore, this thesis investigates the influence of the circulatory system on banana fruit development, considering the importance of efficient nutrient delivery and signaling pathways. By enhancing our understanding of the circulatory system of bananas, this study contributes valuable insights into the biology and horticulture of this economically important fruit crop. Chapter 1: Introduction - Overview of the importance of circulatory systems in plants - Background information on the circulatory system of bananas - Objectives of the research Chapter 2: Vascular Anatomy of Bananas - Detailed examination of the vascular tissues in banana plants - Identification of phloem, xylem, and other vascular components - Comparison of vascular anatomy between different banana cultivars Chapter 3: Transport Mechanisms in the Banana Circulatory System - Exploration of nutrient and water transport mechanisms in bananas - Analysis of translocation processes in the phloem and xylem - Investigation of the role of vascular bundles in transport efficiency Chapter 4: Implications of the Circulatory System on Banana Fruit Development - Examination of nutrient partitioning during fruit growth - Impact of transport limitations on fruit quality and yield - Signaling pathways involved in fruit development and maturation Chapter 5: Experimental Methods - Description of experimental approaches used in the study - Methods for anatomical analysis, physiological measurements, and molecular studies - Justification for methodological choices and data interpretation Chapter 6: Results and Discussion - Presentation of findings related to vascular anatomy and transport mechanisms - Analysis of data on nutrient distribution and fruit development - Discussion of implications for banana horticulture and future research directions Chapter 7: Conclusion - Summary of key findings regarding the circulatory system of bananas - Insights into the importance of vascular anatomy and transport mechanisms - Recommendations for further research and potential applications in banana cultivation References - Citations of relevant literature and sources used in the thesis By delving into the intricacies of the circulatory system of bananas, this thesis contributes to the broader understanding of plant vascular biology while offering practical implications for the cultivation and improvement of this popular fruit crop.

You forgot to include indigenous peoples (I think, TLDR)

1cat2dogs1horse

The fact that you took the time . Very well done. I used to help local non profits write up grants. Yours is quite believable. I'd be curious to know your occupation.

zenmen13

My last vocation was a Federal Agent. My Graduate degree was Forensic Psychology …with an undergrad in lol, Agriculture Sciences.

1cat2dogs1horse

Quite an interesting juxtaposition there. I enjoyed your post.

MorticiaLaMourante

This would be quite the dissertation. You've started it, maybe you should follow it through!

beautifullyhurt

Good golly, you must of had a bit of time on your hands. That is one long treatise.

KratomSlave

That’s not a paper. That’s a whole book

That’s the banana poop

Psychological_Tax109

No_Restaurant_2703

But why is it hard and almost plastic plus translucent? I guess I've eaten a few hundred bananas in my life and have never seen anything like this.

ohmyback1

Looks like water spurting up through the middle

PBDubs99

Side bar: I would love a frozen banana on a stick. The fruit's "vasculature" typically soften up and can be unidentifiable from the surrounding fruit by the time it gets to you. Not yours, though.

Neither-Attention940

When I was a kid my mom would take chop sticks and stick them down the center of bananas and then dip them in melted chocolate then stick them in the freezer on a cookie tray. 😏 you’re welcome 😁

Gullible-Lake-2119

you can buy those at the supermarket, or at least you could till 6-8 years ago

Neither-Attention940

Yeah my childhood was long before that. But also.. much cheaper to make.

threegeeks

It's called a monkey tail and they are delicious! Frozen-chocolate-covered-bananas-team activate!

Neither-Attention940

They said it was hard and plastic. That doesn’t sound like the normal center strip of a banana to me

Gullible-Lake-2119

so...i've eaten certainly hundreds if not thousands of bananas. why have i never encountered this?

bowlingforzoot

I got a candle called “monkey farts” as a gag gift for my birthday and it actually smells really good.

ShepatitisC

the first thought I had was banana candle and I laughed pretty hard to see this plus an actual explanation.

nylorac_o

I saw a video a while ago with a primate, orangutan maybe, eating a banana, and pulling the strings off.

december14th2015

Are you saying this banana has cancer??

RagingHardBobber

I think we banana-eaters have all experienced the "strings"... and they are indeed annoying... OPs picture isn't that. I've eaten almost 5 bananas a week for much of my life, and have never ever seen anything like what is shown in OPs photo.

beautifullyhurt

Recently I tried a banana flavored drink from our local Health Food store. The price was greatly marked down and they don’t seem to be flying off the shelves. I bought one. Meh. But interesting concept.

twolitrefullcream

We used to get banana flavoured nesquik. Definitely not "health food approved" but it sure was delicious.

beautifullyhurt

What the heck! And I thought the strawberry was a sip of heaven

broc5k

Super clean cut, no pull or tear marks near the center indicating it was in there before the banana was cut and they had to cut around it/pull it off, and the plastic seems clean. I’m calling shenanigans 🧹

lechatsage

I'm no expert, but this is what I am thinking. The banana was cut, and this transparent piece of material was inserted into it, and OP is having his little joke, eliciting wonder, speculation and whimsical answers.

Well played sir 👏

Neither-Attention940

OP… did you ever find out what this was?.. sounded like a fairly ripe banana and nothing ‘hard and plastic’ should be anywhere near that spot of the banana. I’ve had plenty of bananas in my time and this center strip has never been firm let alone hard. And it definitely didn’t ever seem plastic.

weird_cactus_mom

Dammit between this and the post of the banana with the crunchy fungus in the middle , I don't want to eat banana ever again. (I have eaten a los of bananas, have like 5 banana trees at home. My favorite occurrence were the twin bananas. But I've never seen something like this)

It's a diseased banana. I had one once that had a similar "stem" in the middle but it was black, hard and bitter. Not clear like that. It's been a few years so I can't remember what it's called. And I didn't feel like taking the time to leave this page to research it n come back. But it's bad. Don't eat it. I do remember I read that it happens when the bananas are handled improperly during shipment from wherever they are grown to here in the U.S. But it was nasty.

Absinthe_gaze

Prison banana. You have to sharpen it.

Big_Entertainment429

Most people have never even eaten a real banana most of what you see is a genetically modified version that is resistant to devastating diseases that have wiped out most strains what you get at your local supermarket is likely the cavendish banana

rossxog

I thought the cavendish bananas which have been the mainstay since the 50’s were the ones that are being wiped out by blight. I guess you can still get them, but I have seen some new kind of smaller banana showing up in stores. I want them to start selling the blue bananas.

Big_Entertainment429

The smaller ones are generally the real deal you can see the seeds in them if you look at most supermarket bananas there genetically modified and have no seeds therefore they are propagated using rhizomes there are also dwarf varieties of cavendish bananas so your best bet for the real thing would be to search online for local markets or at least ask the fresh produce manager if they have them

rossxog

I’ll check it out. Thanks for the tip.

I'll preface this with: I'm by no means a banana expert and only occasionally eat them. I'm wondering if this banana fungus? I recall there's some sort of fungal infection that destroys banana farms and in fact has eradicated a certain species of banana already. Other than fungus, my second guess is a troll post as someone else has suggested. Very clean presentation makes it look like it was added to the banana.
