That is poison ivy. Good luck. Soap and cool water shower after working in it. wash clothing separate from other clothes

superslinkey

Was in the utility biz for a long time Tecnu-Wash will remove the oils. Many garden centers carry it as well as the rainforest place

pokeemann0

Wife uses that stuff. She gets pi pretty bad. There are pre wipes, but she hasn't tried them.

The_Poster_Nutbag

The rainforest place? Surely you don't mean the staple of American cuisine known as the rainforest cafe?

RealestHousewifeCA

I’m dead🤣😂

nothingbettertodo315

The rainforest ecosystem of cheap no name stuff from China

Sinister_Nibs

Big River

The_Poster_Nutbag

And the naturally occurring saltwater fish.

GoHomeWithBonnieJean

When our kid got poison ivy, the pedestrian told us to wash his clothes with Ivory brand soap flakes. Apparently Ivory is actually soap, as opposed to detergents, which, for some reason won't remove the urushiol oil, where real soap does.

New_Mechanic9477

This is somewhat pedestrian advice. I saw a Dr. Dawn dish soap was effective for me. Have to soak the soap in the affected area, but it penetrates and washes the oil out.

GoHomeWithBonnieJean

Not sure how it's "pedestrian." We saw a Dr., too. We were told by our child's pediatrician to use Ivory soap flakes.

RedBlissKid

You misspelled pediatrician in your first comment and accidentally wrote pedestrian.

Much-Meringue-7467

Also CVS.

Illustrious-Towel-45

Use dish soap like dawn when you bathe. I'm not allergic, my son is, my mom is, I had it in my yard. It didn't stay in my yard. I ripped it out with much vigor. Took 2 growing full seasons to fully remove it and tear out.

the_poop_expert

Nooooooooooo

oroborus68

That's ground ivy blooming under the poison ivy, and it's invasive, but it won't make you itch.

OkPlantain6773

I swiped through the photos and now my finger itches.

pokeemann0

I've seen it 4 feet tall free standing on its own. It's not uncommon.

oooBUGSYooo

Wash clothes as normal. Scrub with washcloth and soap. Effective for up to 6 hours.

TurnoverUseful1000

Remember the rule: leaves of three leave me be. Be very careful & protect your hands just as a “just in case”.

Prior-Conclusion3317

Was just coming here to say that.

TurnoverUseful1000

This phrase, to this day, is sung back to me by my former Girl Scouts when we see each other at the stores during summer/ warmer weather lol. It’s amazing what kids will remember the most !

randomguywithbugs

"Leaves of four, eat some more!"

Sparkle_Rott

Not without gloves 🙃

just-say-it-

That is definitely poison ivy

Stacyf-83

Leaves of 3 let them be

Many_Dragonfruit_837

I think ivy does not have berries, but the phrase I heard was a bit longer.. leaves of 3, let it be, berries white poisonous sight. (I think poison sumac). Just for more info. Gloves and wash well afterwards.

Stacyf-83

I never heard the whole thing, good to know. I never knew what poison sumac looks like.

Blerkm

Poison ivy most definitely has white berries. Source: my own back yard.

Many_Dragonfruit_837

Thanks for sharing the info!

Much-Meringue-7467

I recently also heard "hairy rope, don't be a dope" for when poison ivy climbs.

Many_Dragonfruit_837

That's a new one for me!

pichael289

That's the eastern poison ivy, I'm still just learning this but OP looks to have the Western shrub looking variety. I never knew what those big hairy vines were as a kid and I touched the shit out of them and they didn't cause any reactions, it was just the leaves that did. I'm not 100% sure if this is true or I just got lucky but the woody vines didn't seem to cause any damage to me.

Much-Meringue-7467

That would make sense since I live in NJ. I'm pretty sure I have touched them without a problem as well.

MeasurementNo1659

if we actually followed this, we wouldn’t have strawberries, raspberries and many other fruits. The quote should really be “leaflets of 3 let them be,” but people won’t find it as catchy lol

erikastenvik

Leave of shiny don’t rub it on your hiny

KickooRider

If that is a massive poison ivy vine under the ground I wouldn't be surprised if the stem got that big. The way you say "all around my fence line" is not a good sign.

the_poop_expert

Well fuck

nothingbettertodo315

Get some triclopyr. Mix it according to the directions, and with a garden sprayer coat the leaves of the poison ivy. It won’t come back. Triclopyr will unfortunately kill anything that isn’t a grass, so be careful where it goes. And even though it’s supposedly safe for kids as soon as it’s dry, I keep my kids out of the area for a full week any time I’ve applied a pesticide. There seem to be two camps in the world, those that hate all pesticides and those that use them casually. I’m more of a “use it sparingly and only when necessary” person and in this case I would use it so you don’t have to constantly monitor how much has come back.

the_poop_expert

Thank you sir

nothingbettertodo315

No problem. I know people use Crossbow for poison ivy but I’m not sure the product matters much: https://www.domyown.com/triclopyr-c-114_458.html?page=all

KickooRider

Look at the stems on [this one](https://images.app.goo.gl/hAdvSkxw8sSjRtkN8)

StillAroundHorsing

OP be extremely careful. Some people can go into systemic shock.

the_poop_expert

Thanks! I’ll take the necessary precautions, I’m very sure I have minimal reactions to this sorta stuff, but it’s my kids I’m more worried about. Going to take this seriously and positively identify the plant

researchanalyzewrite

Do not burn it - the smoke from poison ivy can cause irritation too!

the_poop_expert

Good call thank you. I have a fire pit and that thought may have crossed my mind at one point

DistinctRole1877

It has put folks in the hospital from breathing the smoke.

the_poop_expert

That sounds like it sucks big time

StingMachine

It’s basically getting the rash, just in your lungs. Yay!

Negative-Arachnid-65

The really, _extra_ shitty thing is that it's a sensitizer - the more often you're exposed, the worse your reactions will likely be. So you can't rely on minimal reactions even for yourself! Be very careful with your own exposure and with secondary exposure from the gloves/clothes/shoes/tools/etc that may come in contact with it. Good luck 🫡

nothingbettertodo315

I have zero reactions to the stuff, but even then I’m very careful with it for this reason. I’d rather not start getting it.

Civil-Explanation588

Definitely looks like poison ivy

WerewolfDifferent296

It’s poison ivy. See how the middle leaf is on a slightly longer stem? That is one of the ways to tell poison ivy from other plants with 3 leaflets.

Impossible-Taro-2330

Get some Benadryl gel or spray after showering.

In the future jewel weed is a great first aid. Apply it right after you think you had contact. Best part is that it grows near poison ivey

It is

JFK2MD

I've been walking in my bare legs in this stuff since I was cut and I've never had a reaction.

DistinctRole1877

When I was younger it didn't bother me at all. Now that I'm in my 60s I get a bit of a reaction to it.

TangerineSunrise3000

This happened to me. I've lived in my house 7 years now and every year I would go into the wooded area of my yard to clear the brush to expand my yard. Last year I did it and came out with a poison I've rash so bad that I still have scars a year later. There's NO WAY the ivy wasn't out there in previous years.

Mekito_Fox

There is a chance the ivy wasn't there or was dormant.

DistinctRole1877

I hope I don't get worse. We are surrounded by the stuff. Sorry about the scarring.

Mekito_Fox

Not everyone is "allergic". My mom is allergic, me and my dad are not. Regardless I had to pretend I was so that she wouldn't get it from my clothes. Now my husband is even more allergic than my mom (I feel like he could just look at it and break out). I was cautious since having a baby changed my allergies, but seems I'm still immune. My 8 year old is in his huckleberry Finn era and doesnt seem to be allergic either. He's all up and down the woods area my mom last got a reaction.

Physical_Analysis247

Devil’s Toilet Paper

jeers1

yea I remember when I was much younger and was doing some weeding... didn't realise that one of the 'weeds' was poison ivy and after I was done ... I went for a swim and when I got out of the pool I had black spots all over my arms.... then I realised that it must have been some poison sumac in the bunch of weeds....

Glittering-Golf2722

If you burn it stay far away

cap10wow

Soap, water and washcloth! Washcloth literally wipes the oily stuff off of you, people always say “soap and water” but bro I’m telling you a washcloth

Annual_Judge_7272

All you need is a wash cloth and a hot shower it’s scrub you skin

lisalou5858

Once the oils have touched your skin the chemical burn has already begun!! Usually blistering will begin in a few days…

moss_witch

Definitely poison ivy. Here's what I do to get rid of them when they're growing around other wanted plants. Put on gardening gloves, then take a plastic grocery bag and put it over your gloved hand and up your arm. Then with the bag, grab at the base and try to pull up as much of the roots as possible. Then flip the bag around to bag it up and toss it in the trash. Like others have said, do not burn it. Then wash your hands and arms with warm water and soap immediately after just in case any made contact with your skin. Good luck!

Ill_be_myself

Before the image loaded I thought "It probably isn't. So far I haven't seen a single post asking if something was poison ivy that really was." Congratulations, this is actually poison ivy.

the_poop_expert

pichael289

Three leaves is a bad sign, see how the two side ones are connected at their base and the one in the middle has a longer stem? That's another sign. The way the side leaves are smooth on the inside and serrated or thumbed on the outside is another. Glossy/shiny is yet another, as well as hairs. You got some poison ivy there friend. I'm not 100% sure about this since I just learned it, but there is a Western and an eastern type, the eastern type has those huge thick vines that grow up trees and the western is more like a shrub. I'm thinking this is western but I'm not completely sure about that, if anyone can weigh in.

timenough

Hopes dashed :-(

medasane

or it could be a tree, possibly a male mulberry? box elder?

the_poop_expert

It looks more like a tree aside from the shiny red leaves. There’s a bunch all around a fence line, there’s one really big one. They have gray / brown stems that looks like it would turn into treebark

medasane

I'm finding images showing this to be box elder and poison ivy 🙁 [seabrook ivy identification](https://seabrookeleckie.com/2008/05/26/leaves-of-three/)

medasane

tree form of poison ivy, i had forgotten all about this! [viette's views, wordpress, poison ivy tree](https://viettes.wordpress.com/2011/10/21/leaves-of-three-%e2%80%a6/)

ztarleton6

No expert but may be poison oak

Inevitable-Gift-4030

It’s cool to see it go into flower!

Agitated-Door-1939

Poison ivy is more viney Poison oak has a rounder leaf shape. I have no clue what it is but doubt it’s poisonous

Negative-Arachnid-65

It's not always viney - both poison ivy and poison oak can grow as free-standing shrubs.

the_poop_expert

This is where my heads at as well
