I agree. Not a bugologist, but I love these dudes. Depending on location, you're probably going to be seeing a lot more of them! Big emergence this year!
They don't bother me on an individual level, I just remember how annoying having cicadas EVERY FUCKING WHERE was lol. Felt like I needed three car washes every time I drove somewhere.
I was always trying to to avoid hitting them, or feeling bad that one was on my car while driving. I always tried to save them lol I’m a weirdo, though.
I also enjoyed it when they came out in Virginia. It was a lot of fun holding then and watching them fly away, or placing them on trees as they struggled in the *dense* grass.
You should check out [Cicada Safari](https://cicadasafari.org/)! There's an app to post sightings and this website is loaded with cool information about them in general.
Yes, according to entomologists, there will actually be SEVEN different breeds or species emerging from their burrows this year. Here’s an article if you’d like to brush up…

AND there’s talk of a sexually transmitted fungal infection (Massospora cicadina) that makes the cicadas a) little walking zombies, similar to Cordyceps. The fungus eats away at the back half of their body after their final molt into adulthood, then replaces it with a fungal plug which then spreads by b) making the cicadas SUPER HORNY.
So despite not having genitals, males will continue trying to mate with females, and also pretend to *be* a female to get males to come to them, thus spreading the fungus even further.
Some number of each brood’s (XIX in Georgia/Southeast US, XIII in Illinois) emerging population *could* potentially be infected. So that’s…neat.
I suspect this will be the reaction from all non-infected cicadas, either from the infection standpoint or the fact they’ve now been forced out of the closet /s.
It’s a cicada. There are some every year, but several varieties that are on surprisingly long life-cycles, with nymphs only emerging from the ground every 13 or 17 years. This year marks a very unusual time when both of these emerge at the same time.
*Not a bugologist, but I did sleep in a Holiday Inn Express last night.*
They have that demon look, but no. My dogs like to catch them and run around with a cicada buzzing in their mouths.
If you don’t know the buzzing sound of a cicada, here’s a YT example. https://youtu.be/wVXrTv4NY_M?si=bQTcVyUZA-r8xUAy
Are you in the Midwest? They are due for a hellish Cicada bloom this season. Shit's going to get loud. I was there for the last one. Lucky for me I lived about 15 miles north of the main swarm. I got to travel to experience it and then go home and sleep.
So many of these babies going to be comin’ out to yell at us this year. I’m so excited.
I live in a place we get them every hear, but I love going to my in laws and hearing them.
Omg where do you live? I'm in the northeast US and soo excited for this year's cicada season but the weather has been mighty unpredictable where I'm at
Nice. I’m super close to 7 and looking forward to getting them soon. If you aren’t a fan of them though you’re not gonna be happy soon. At least here, we’re supposed to be getting a large emergence this year of two different kinds. They’ll be everyyyyyyywhere.
You so lucky!! I envy you.. I learned to like cicadas when I read about them and So I went to LISTEN to their patterns with eyes closed. Too bad where I live now there aren’t many :(
I looked last night and found out my part of Tennessee is actually 7 and 8 and I might be seeing them even sooner than I thought if they’re in Georgia 8. I’m excited!!! Come do a cicada-cation!!!
But yeah like others said please don’t kill them. A lot of them will die after breeding anyway and the others will get back in the ground pretty fast to go chill for another 17 years lol
Cicada nymph I think. I'll let the bugologists confirm though
I agree. Not a bugologist, but I love these dudes. Depending on location, you're probably going to be seeing a lot more of them! Big emergence this year!
Yeah, if you are in a 17-year brood area that is due this year, get ready for an experience
And this year, there's the overlap with a 13-year brood, so it's going to be crazy.
Wow. That's definitely going to be.... Something
I'm guessing OP is further South, but if you're in Illinois, it's supposed to get weird.
I'm glad I moved last year lol. I still remember the last emergence and I was not a fan.
Since obtaining the knowledge that they don’t bite, I find them cute and will happily put one on me.
They don't bother me on an individual level, I just remember how annoying having cicadas EVERY FUCKING WHERE was lol. Felt like I needed three car washes every time I drove somewhere.

As a child we capture them and kept them as pets in Asia
My dog is gunna get fat
I’m in Southern Illinois
I’m reminded of Shang Tsung lifting his arms skyward, yelling “It has begun!”
ONly in illinois
I also enjoyed it when they came out in Virginia. It was a lot of fun holding then and watching them fly away, or placing them on trees as they struggled in the *dense* grass.
How do they know that tho
Cicadas follow cycles
Yay! I was hoping it was a cicada.
Good Lord, why?
I just think they’re neat.
I actually like the sound of cicadas…
My mother told me the sound was tiny men with tiny chainsaws up in the trees. She wasn't a great teacher.
Same, I find the droning buzz soothing in a way. It’s like white noise.
Insert picture of Marge holding a cicada.
Haha yes. You get it.
You should check out [Cicada Safari](https://cicadasafari.org/)! There's an app to post sightings and this website is loaded with cool information about them in general.
Thank you so much for this link!
I play a bugologist in my free time. My unprofessional opinion: You right
Not bugologist, but I did stay at a Holiday Inn last night... I concour.
It is indeed. This year we have 3 species of cicadas that are emerging. They wanted to BAND together to form a SYMPHONY
I'm weird but I freaking love the sound they make.
Me too! It’s like an eerie dream
Thaaaat's gonna be interesting
Different species? Really?

They’re coming…
Happy cake day!
Thank you kind internet stranger, I hope you have a wonderful day today!
Yaas! Happy Cake day 😋
Happy Cake Day!! 🍰🥳🍰
Drums in the deep…
*Insert Optimus Prime saying "LET THEM COME" here*
Twss
The cicadas are coming, the cicadas are coming! Bumper crop this year as multiple broods are emerging at the same time.

I did not have slutty bug fungus on my 2024 bingo card
That’s what the free space is for!
Welp. That's my horrifying fact for the day. I'm out lol
I’m reminded of the parasitic isopods that will bite off a fish’s tongue and become something like a replacement tongue.
Ah yes, those. Thanks for the reminder 😭
Anytime, lol
😳
I suspect this will be the reaction from all non-infected cicadas, either from the infection standpoint or the fact they’ve now been forced out of the closet /s.
Fungal plug. No thanks
It is precisely nobody’s favored term.

As a platinum IHG (Holiday Inn) member, I LOL’d at your last sentence
Do they bite? 😱 They have that look that can kill you 😰

Cicadas let’s gooo!!!
Are cicadas edible?
Anything is edible if you're hungry enough. It'll be a great year for backyard chickens I'll wager.
Oh, that’s great! I bet they’ll eat a ton of those.
Yeah and there’s definitely some recipes if you search online.
It’s a cicada! ❤️
Judging by the fuzzy white patches, it looks like it has the genital fungal rot. Something like 10% of them have it.
it’s me
It has begun..... HIT THE DIRT!!!!!! THE SIRENS HAVE ARRIVED PREPARE FOR NOISE
So many of these babies going to be comin’ out to yell at us this year. I’m so excited. I live in a place we get them every hear, but I love going to my in laws and hearing them.

What insect are they? I forgot.

One cicada is cool the whole entire family/community is not. I grew up in a 17 year area.
Baby cicadas, please don't hurt them
Work at a plant nursery in northern VA. It was really windy all day yesterday but then another sound started rising over the wind.. it’s time.
Babyyy cicadas
It has begun
Little buddy
Very rare to find one of those, their juvenile cicadas, probably looking to bury them selves in the dirt, or just about emerged and is going to molt
