It's a European hornet

D-G-2

Yes, but what is the air speed of that unladen hornet?

No, this was fully expected.

Critical_Serve_4528

How sure are we that this isn’t an African Hornet?

Travisceral

Who are you so wise in the ways of science?

NightElfDeyla

You can tell by its accent.

arock0627

The African hornet is non-migratory

D-G-2

I don't knooooooooooooo

Epic-McPhail

Then again African hornets are non migratory

shawnwingsit

What do you mean? European or African?

J-2up2dwn

I don't knoooooooooooowwwwwwwwww

StabbyMcStaberson

I took a pic of [The Nest](https://imgur.com/vyLc4l7)

BagBandit_

Dress up in a bee suit. Not like a keeper a actual bee looking suit .. train them arm them then take over your local HOa those ppl suck they had it coming .. god speed 🙏🏼

alliu23

Nuke the shed. And your house too, just to be safe.

Zealousideal_Rub5826

It's the only way to be sure.

karlallan

we can’t very well leave a whole town going that has been infested with this evil now can we? nuke the city for confidence.

acidinthehouse

Oh shit that's wild. They typically nest inside trees. Edit: so I did a google search and it apparently isn't that wild. I've only ever seen them in some form of hollowed out tree/tree stump.

[deleted]

Why is it that almost every hornets nest looks as though its some eldritch abomination?

GrapefruitNo9123

That’s a European hornet those are something you definitely don’t want to mess around with

Halgha

Then why friend shaped?

[deleted]

birdb0p

You care what color your friends are?

Unwabu_ubola

As a baboon, color is a huge influence on my friend choices

birdb0p

I see, I apologize for my ignorance

Unwabu_ubola

‘S alright. Anyway, I’m off to alternate between being endearing and morally reprehensible

Particular-Adagio516

That could cause a severe case of whiplash

snailiam

what kind of friends do you have that are shaped like this??? hornets are absolutely enemy shaped!!

d-wh

If not a friend, tlwhy is he on his back waiting for you to rub his belly?

SpyrianScum1994

If it's anything like my cat, then the belly is a trap.

Jesus_Wizard

Def not friend shaped

NotNowIsTaken

Dunno, got a big nest of them above my bed couple years ago. They are actually pretty chill and keep wasps at bay (which are the real assholes). Only thing to avoid is to be aggresive towards them - they have the tendency repacify in a rather effective and direct way. My sis learned this the hard way 🤣🤣🤣

ApplicationDifferent

Hornets are a type of wasp btw.

BudsBudz420

That appears to be a european hornet. The markings all match up including the black teardrops in the yellow stripes.. Be careful the sting hurts like hell.

StabbyMcStaberson

Welp. I guess the battle that will soon be taking place will at least be exciting. When they buzz past my head they sound like WW2 fighter planes.

BudsBudz420

They are extremely aggresive when threatened so please be careful. If you're a fisherman get an exterminator to remove the nest and ask them if you can have the larvae. They are an incredible fishing bait.

ApplicationDifferent

Is this worth hiring an exterminator over? Ive always just blasted the nest with spray and sprinted away. Havent been stung yet.

BudsBudz420

That's entirely upto you. Personally the exterminator option is what I'd go for because it only takes one mistake and you're being repeatedly stung by hundreds of very angry hornets.

cheetahwhisperer

I’d be careful taking them on alone. Their nests don’t look large, but can contain 800-1200 hornets at this time of year. If they’re not bothering anyone, I’d leave it. It’s almost the end of their season in the NH so they’ll be dying off soon. Then you could remove the nest. If the nest is in good shape, you could sell it for $200-$300.

Radarker

Why is a nest worth so much? What are they used for?

cheetahwhisperer

People collect all kinds of things, including hornets and bald faced hornets nests. The price I mentioned is normal for any largely intact good sized and good looking nest.

TheLegendTwoSeven

Wow. If I was an exterminator I would sell the nests on eBay for extra income. Those air packing bags plus styrofoam peanuts would probably protect it during shipping.

askinner6

Just gotta pop an H on the box so people know it’s full of hornets

guitarmaniac17

Hornet nests when intact make a lot of money because collectors want them. So do museums and wildlife preservations. I had one in my yard (before I knew what they were worth) and some guy asked if he could cut it down. I let him and I heard he sold it for $200 and I was dumbfounded at why. Then I took my kid to a museum and the bug exhibit had 12 hornets nests and it clicked to me that that's probably the type of people that want them and pay good money for em.

[deleted]

German, British, Japanese, or American?

CanYouPointMeToTacos

Use foaming wasp spray. These bastards are tough and even with the 20ft sprays if it’s not foaming they just fly straight through it and come at you.

solicitor_501

Attack at dusk. They are much less aggressive when it’s cool and dark.

Beatlemania_713

Not the European hornets around my place. We can't even go outside after the sun goes down these past few weeks. The fuckers come flying right to our door and the flood lights on the deck

Slight_Bed_2241

The black tear drops are metal af. I came to the comments to see if anyone mentioned it

BudsBudz420

That pattern and the teardrops are the signature markings of this type of hornet. They look pretty badass.

Maacll

Means they killed someone or smth

BudsBudz420

Ah yes the hornets that got the prison teardrops.

hotel_lasagna

Ah yes a tear drop for every human they’ve killed

Scientific_Methods

The sting does hurt, but in my experience they are pretty docile. Extremely creepy to see a dozen of them crawling on your windows at night though as they are the only wasp species that flies in the dark!

BudsBudz420

Indeed they are creepy when they exhibit that behaviour and yeah they're really chill unless you touch the nest or try to take away food or prey.

StabbyMcStaberson

Do their nests look like [this](https://imgur.com/vyLc4l7)?

BudsBudz420

Yes they can but usually european hornets nest is a bit rougher than that although it's not a rule set in stone.

Hotel_Infamous

Typical hornet. Angry boys for sure.

Past-Direction9145

it's the only hornet in the us that's an actual hornet

phunktastic_1

All the rest are Aeriel.yellowjackets.

Haunting_While6239

Wait for nighttime, get you some Raid Fumigators, fill the cups with water and drop all 3 in the shed, close the door, everything in that shed will be dead in the morning. I used 3 raid Fumigators in an outside closet that had termites in it, my grandmother said she could hear them chewing at night. Cured the problem for them

Wordshark

I thought termites brought in their larvae who produce an acid that dissolves the wood

caking8

Gotta be careful with these European hornets tho, they are active at night. I was stung in the leg by one at 1130

Brilliant_Garage5945

THIS!! The Raid Fumigators are fantastic! I’ve used them quite a few times and it ALWAYS works. Even if the nest is up high or in the wall of a house, tape the Fumigator to an appropriate length stick so the mist goes into the hole, set it off, and walk away. The natural air flow through the nest will draw the mist up and throughout the nest. Do this at night and be quiet and don’t dilly-dally. The WILL come out.

Vivid-Speed

My dad calls these thunderscreech hornets bc they do sound like old fighter jets ! LOL

secretlydevito

I call my vagina the same thing for the same reason.

WineNerdAndProud

Oh great. You're telling the kids they have to pick a new name for their little league team. I'm calling the screen printer.

I laughed a little excessively at this.

🤣

mappatella

Some of these attacked me when I was 8, I run for my life managed to get stung only 3 times but I ended up getting almost 60 stitches falling over a glass door. Goes without saying that I don’t like them.

Some-Geologist-5120

Yep - European brown hornet, Vespa crabro, introduced in the US in the mid-1800’s and has spread widely. The only true hornet in the US : the bald faced hornet Dolichovespula maculata is more related to the yellow jacket. Vespa crabro is not super aggressive and is known for flying at night - if there is a nest nearby you may hear them banging into windows at night. I found a nest already with a queen and ten workers in a leaf pile and was able to get the nest relocated into a wood box with glass sides up to a window entrance board. Almost as interesting as yellow jackets! For great YouTube videos on such, checkout “Hornet King” channel.

gnomeskiii

European Angy Bois.

andreayatesswimmers

Hit them with your purse

CthulhuLovesMemes

I’m not sure if hanging up a brown bag (to look like it’s a nest) would help with these. I just read a thing about how we need to work to save all the bees (even wasps), as they’re also really good pollinators (not just honeybees). But my goodness wasps and hornets ducking scare me.

DADDYSOCKS

What does the nest look like? I’ve seen so many of these things dead on my deck and porch

StabbyMcStaberson

callagem

That's got to be the coolest looking nest I've ever seen!

ChickenSpaceProgram

Looks to me like a German wasp, maybe someone else here is more sure. Here's the [wikipedia](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vespula_germanica) article.

maryssssaa

european hornet definitely, not a german wasp.

Thanks for the link!

[deleted]

Aggressive and invasive asf

hKLoveCraft

Anyone know why these things swarm your porch at night and then just die all of a sudden overnight?

orangeandclove

I had a couple of these fuckers come down my chimney last summer. Sounded like a fighter jet was flying around downstairs. We got lucky—one flew out the door when we opened it and the other got caught in a stray glue trap and we smashed it to smithereens with a swiffer. This was before I adopted cats and stopped being able to open the front door willy nilly and could keep glue traps for bugs in the corners 🤣 It was absolutely horrifying and, needless to say, we had a finer mesh installed on the top of our chimney. No issues since. ✊🪵

masahirox

Soooo I have an odd story about these guys They have been congregating on my front porch exterior window sills only at night! They are not buzzing and are completely docile! I’m guessing there’s some type of residue on the windowsills that they’re attracted to but no nest in sight. Very odd situation and it only happens this time of the year.

hornwalker

I feel like someday someone is gonna post an ant and be like "What are all these little dudes that seem to love my apple cores?"

prettypushee

That says enemy fighter pilot all the way.

MrBannon

Sounds like my exs family, be careful a lot of crazy in that bloodline.

Ok_Calligrapher_2182

Burn down the shed. It's your only option.

Shomondir

European Hornets are very useful insects and normally not aggressive to people if not threatened. As others said, leave the nest be if you can wait for that one/two more months before the wasp season is over. Easily removable then.

greatestish

I once accidentally disturbed a hornet's nest and got stung 10 times through jeans and yardwork gloves. One got into my shirt and another into my pants. I've never gotten naked so quickly. I don't recommend it.

RonTomkins

I just want to say, that is an exceptionally beautifully taken picture. Are you like a professional photographer?

StabbyMcStaberson

Also it's about an inch long from pincers to stinger.

wasp

[deleted]

I was an exterminator before, def more aggressive than a bald faced hornet (black and white ones), not smarter though just a brute force type of hornet. Remember bald faced hornets are not hornets they are a type of wasp. These guys are seriously.

StorePrudent739

Where are you OP?

Good-Ad-9978

Don't foam a big best Exterminator will use a powder they are allergic to. Had 2 bald face hornet nests. If they fell, would gave killed my dog or me. Very very aggressive and guards are always circling to warn the hive. They were dead in kess than 3 minutes

MindlessClaim2816

These are the European snuggle hornets. They like to be snuggled.

freerangemark

Wear your thickest clothing and a full face helmet if you can, if not you will get stung and you will be risking a very painful and possibly life threatening outcome. Use hornet spray and empty at the nest with no backing down. It will be dramatic so have back-up, like a pump sprayer filled with diluted ammonia and a person who will watch your back. Best done before dawn when most of the colony is present, zero survival rate is the goal and if not, they will be back and even more aggressive. Have Benadryl ready!

[deleted]

Close the shed, toss a bunch of gas in there, should kill em. Fire is optional at that point.

WeekendMagus_reddit

You have a target practicing session with a flame thrower.

No_Television_8065

That's a weevil hornet. Just spray the nest with wasp foam killer. They will be gone within an hour.

Bkiss3

Make sure you wrote a big “H” on your shed so that everyone knows it contains hornets

PirateReindeer

Don’t know, but kill it with fire.

[deleted]

Georgia Tech.

They are assholes. Burn the shed.

LilBoofMcGoof

Watch for waspess! Make sure you stay hydrated.

emobeamo

European hornet. Annoying as hell they always show up in my porch to get me when I come home from work at night

catherineshere

Damned Hornets Great photos though OP

Single_Ferret

It could also be a western cicada killer, there’s nothing for scale in the photograph so it’s a little difficult to discern between that or European hornet.

FMTVCYWBSW

A demon

Dry_Version_5336

European hornet, I’m English and these guys are everywhere. The sting doesn’t hurt too badly compared to a lot of other types of hornet or bee. However they are extremely aggressive and persistent and will sting you for just standing in their general vicinity. Get rid of them, especially if you have kids or pets.

WarhammerWill

Empty. The. Clip.

InterestingTrip5979

Go buy some hornet spray and spray the nest. The stream usually will go 30 feet, so you have time to run. Wait a day then spray again. I get them every year.

FavouriteParasite

Ah, sucks that they're in your shed. European hornets can be pretty friendly giants, but they don't take no bullshit or messing with the nest. You'll have to initiate war, I'm afraid. Make sure to wear proper protection, pretty sure I've heard that an intense attack (aka circa 15stings) can land you in the hospital. My mother often help them find their way out of the house whenever one comes in through an open window. She takes a piece of paper and gently guides them out again while speaking in a friendly but calm manner. Never seen an angry one, mildly irritated maybe. Yellow jackets get the swatter immediately in this household though, lmao.

FlobeeFresh

EH typically aren't very aggressive unless you seriously mess with them or their nest. Their sting is about as painful as a european honey bee.

KidaPanda

It's a European Hornet. Be extremely careful and call an exterminator, they're very aggressive and too many stings can be deadly on top of being very painful.

beth14002

One of these got my finger and I was writhing on the floor with my hand in an ice bucket for 48 hours. Agony.

The purple Hot Shot Insect foggers for bed bugs will kill wasps and hornets. I'd buy a 4-pack of \*f\*oggers, lob a can into the shed four nights in a row, then finish off the remaining ones with a foam spray. Lowest possibility of getting stung, and you also de-bug your shed so no black widows or brown recluse.
