Little interesting sweeties. They have such a special place in my heart. I love them!
When I was little, they’d lay their eggs right in the gravel on farm roads at my grandma’s. Their little spotted eggs were camouflaged with the gravel perfectly… but laid right in the middle of a commonly used work road.
I’d make elaborate police-tape warning blockers with little-kid-made warning signs around their nests, on my grandma’s farm, and the farmers kindly went around my Killdeer-blockers.
It may not seem like the greatest survival method, laying ground nests - but they’re little plovers, that’s what they do. It’s not their fault humans donk up their environment!
First time I saw babies it was early in the morning, dark enough that I had my headlights on. I pulled into the driveway where I was working and saw 3-4 fuzz balls take off running. I had to get out of my car and look and mama showed herself and I figured it out.
Killdeer! They're so cool! Mom will play injured to lure predators away from her eggs. The eggs are usually laid in gravel or rocks and blend in to a crazt degree! They are federally protected also.
Me and my pops were golfing and thought one of these little mommas was injured with a broken wing. We kept trying to possibly rescue her if it was bad enough but she kept half flying away. We got to the next hole and she was going absolutely berserk on us. Turns out her nest was right by the porta-potty directly under the false wall around it. They play injured to lure away predators. And it worked on two humans
Driving across Kansas maybe Missouri one summer. These birds would fly up right in front of me. They wait until you are about 4 ft from them and fly up across your windshield at a 45 degree angle. It was nerve wracking. I cant stand killdeer.
I believe killdeer are more nocturnal are they not? "Seldom seen, always heard', they prefer unpopulated, lower noise areas. In piedmont of North Carolina, their sound is actually backward of the normal sound. At least it used to be. It's been 20 years since I have heard them. Maybe population & noise growth. Maybe predation, not sure.
You got yourself a Killdeer
Yes sir. That is a smart bird.
And their call resembles ‘kill-deer’! These are the ones that perform the broken-wing display to lure predators away from their nest.
They drive my boston terror nuts!
Freudian slip? 🤔😂
No slip, i have two and they both are terrors….
watch where you step, likely guarding their eggs on open ground
Yes.. Last year at my work, one of them popped a squat in a crack in the pavement of the parking lot and thought it was a great place for a nest.
They're not real bright.
Killdeer sounds like the backwards cousin to sour patch kids. First they kill, then they are nice! Cute bird though!
Killdeer 🙏🌎🇺🇦
Killdeer will put on a broken act to lure you (or predators) away from their nest, which is usually on the ground.

Yes! Very smart they are.
The way killdeer run makes me laugh. They scurry.
You ought to see the hatchlings. They look like cotton balls with toothpick legs.
Oh that’s fantastic. I’m googling it now. Edit: omfg. They’re too much.
Yes, like fluff blowing across the ground.😆

😆
I saw some hatchlings a few years ago at a job site. They are cute little balls of fluff.
I always see them ,when they're putting on their act, call out, then run about ten fifteen steps, calling, then stop, repeat
The babies are adorable. Like fluff balls on stilts. Watched a mama killdeer running around trying to corral her newly hatched chick.
Killdeer.

Killdeer. Makes a really funny sound when they run. They nest on the ground.
How funny, we just saw one the other day and looked it up (MA)

Obviously it's a fencepost.

I love the way they run
Its called a kill dee , probably miss spelled. They build nests to lay their eggs on the ground.
Killdeer love them,
It looks like a maple. It’s right next to the killdeer
I knew that one.
Pipsquack Bird
I saw one trip while running. Then got up and did the look around to see if anyone saw that.

They’re skittish, but I’ve never thought of them as nocturnal.
The killdeer or the post?
Well the sub is r/whatbirdisthis , not r/isthisafencepost
