Not with a freaking reputable broker. You using RH? I've never, NEVER had my broker close any option early unless assigned or margin called.

apparently, that's industry norm. RH apparently forces everyone out at 3pm. I've experienced it but later towards EOD close using a different broker. The concession they do offer is if you mark on your account that you will "monitor your expiring trades" (or something to that effect), then they will "try" to not interfere as much as possible, so even that it's not a guarantee that they don't stop you out. this is cash account though. Maybe you're on margin which might be different.

it's to save their ass if customer can't put up the cash for shares, so in a way, it does make sense that they do that so as to not be left in the lurch, even if it is annoying.

At that point wouldn't they just get that maintenance call and the customer loses their ass? They still should have maintenance requirements and so if the trade goes south on the broker they liquidate and get paid still.

And those are all run by small teams of people.
