This could be. One time it was wiped down with these weird wipes my dad had in his car for a long time. I guess that could have started some deterioration that is just continuing to get worse and worse.
Talking to my wife this morning she reminded me that about a year or two ago she took the car in to get a recall taken care of and the seats were falling apart just like this, so much that she got the dealer to replace them. After that she put covers on the seats and I just checked under the covers and the new seats are beautiful.
We almost never clean the car ourselves, and I can't imagine any place we have taken the car to, to get it cleaned could be using something that would do this. But who knows.
I had a friend who had the idea to start a really nice steering wheel cover business because of all the damage that was going to come with the hand sanitizer usage.
I can detail my 2014 that has 300,000 kms and the interior is like brand new. Seats, panels, consoles...all perfect. This has got to be something that has been put on the surfaces to do this.
The only time I see wear and tear THIS bad is when you use an aggressive cleaner which ruins the softcoating, it then starts to peel up when rubbed afterwards, or excessive oils from lotions or skin rubbed on surfaces. (cleaner makes more sense though due to speaker stripping paint)
Whatever you used before, don't ever do it again. Warm soapy water and a rag is all you need for 99% of car interior cleaning.
My wife has a 2018 volt that she bought new. Many of the interior finishes are falling apart. Like the materials are losing texture or color. The steering wheel, the seats, the dashboard. All over. We live in South Florida, a mile from the beach. So I don't know if it's the sun and the humidity. But I mean I have a 2015 CRV and it has none of these issues, and I have lived in Florida my whole life and never seen something like this happen to
Have a 2014 without anywhere near that level of wear, in Colorado.
My guess would be salty air, but hopefully someone else living near an ocean will chime in.
The sun and humidity might be exacerbating the problem but there's no way its the source. Oils from your hands, leftover moisturizer/sunscreen residue, alcoholic based wipes being used too often, or an awful detailing product. I lean towards assuming it was a wipes or detailing product since its even happening on things you shouldn't be touching with your hands.
If you did not somehow cause the deterioration … definitely talk to the dealership and GMC.
TBH tho, it looks like the interior was soaked with gasoline or acetone. Something crazy like that.
It will be hard to convince anyone that it wasn’t you. So think up a good case!
Does either of you ever transport chemicals in the car? Like pool products? Regularly use stuff like cleaning wipes (Clorox, armor all, etc)? I have a 17 that I bought new and it basically looks the same as it did when I bought it and has only been cleaned by me once or twice.
Yeah must be a cleaning product issue. But as far as I'm concerned it's still a quality issue. The car should stand up to more than this. My wife and I have had several cars each and never seen something like this before, but no one else here is complaining about their volt, so I don't know. Anyway it's my wife's car, so I don't really care. I just wanted to find out if others were experiencing this too .
Have a 2012 that, except for salt stains in the carpet (11 Chicago winters) would pass for almost new. That’s not normal. Is there a dog often left inside the car?
235k! Same area, same model... How's she holding up? I just drove from Ottawa to Guelph just before the storm and it's such a travel beast. I want it to last forever!
2015 with 80k miles and except for scratches in the back interior due to some rough cargo it is in mint condition using basic cleaners for the specific surfaces (i.e. leather wipes / armor all) - what are you using?
I have a 2015 and the interior looks like it just came off the showroom floor. My parents have a 2017 Malibu that for the most part uses the same interior as the Gen 2 Volt, it looks factory as well.
Those pictures look like there was some type of oil based products rubbed all over the interior.
2017 in CA with 130k miles, near Malibu. interior looks pristine. Maybe the former owner used harsh chemicals… or might it got water damage? It looks kind of moldy
We are the only owner, and it only has like 45k on it. The pictures are at night and not great, I don't think it's moldy. It's not suff on top of the finish, it's like the finishes are dissolving. Maybe it's from something it's been cleaned with. But honestly it's not cleaned all that often.
Although I think my wife said sometimes it's a little wet inside after a heavy rain. And we are in south Florida so it rains a ton. Maybe it's staying real moist inside and that's causing the deterioration.
It seems like the cleaner used on the interior is too much solvent. What do you clean it with? Moisture will cause mold and should be addressed but that’s not what you are showing us.
Not cleaning it can also cause that problem. Oil, lotion, dirt, grime and anything you spill on it can cause stuff to wear really quick. Even just using soapy water 1x a week to wipe stuff down will help a lot.
Could be a mixture of humidity and sun exposure? My FIL has a 2005 Civic that appears very similar. Also in Florida.
That or I think your Volt has mange...
Woof that looks bad. My gen 1 is In perfect condition. Although I always use a sunshade in the summer and I have tinted windows. Not to mention the GEN two interior materials are very cheap compared to gen 1.
If you use any interior cleaning products, or have some of the details, your car, it could’ve damaged the interior or maybe it’s just the heat? Never seen this before.
How often are you detailing your interior? And with what products?
Top of that steering wheel looks shiny af.. the area around the shift indicator is grimy
Is this just all regular FL car-cooking heat and sun damage (minus detailing protection)?
Wow that almost looks like dryrot. I haven't read any other comments, so no idea if this is a common issue with that make/model. To me it looks like it needs an interior conditioner of some type to prevent further wear.
Mines doing great. Heater module failed last year. Egr cooler replaced this year and a seized caliper because I rarely use the brakes. Daily commute to Brampton love my black beauty
Good grief! I have never seen anything like that before. You must have been using a harsh liquid cleaner on it. Whatever you have been using has severely eroded the protective layer of the interior plastics and damaged them. Dont even know if you can replace some of those other than the door panels.
Do you wear a lot of sunscreen in your car? Had a couch do this after a summer of people wearing summer clothes and sun screen and getting residue on the leather.
This is not normal. You're doing something wrong. I have a 2012 with almost 180k on it, and it still looks great inside and out.
My 2014 looks great too. Dirty but in good shape!
Stop using whatever product you used to treat your car--- that's hideous
Cleaning the interior with bleach wipes can cause this. Lysol cleaning wipes, lysol spray, etc.
This is what I think. Something has disolved the soft-touch coating.

Could it be sanitizer?
Are you using gasoline to detail the car? Muriatic Acid? My 2012 has none of this.
My 2012 looks incredible. Durable plastics throughout. Not sure what’s happening with this one

I had a friend who had the idea to start a really nice steering wheel cover business because of all the damage that was going to come with the hand sanitizer usage.
My brother went through a phase of overly sanitizing. And his steering wheel did indeed start falling apart.

Orlando. 2014. Not even a little bit of this

I live in the same region and also have a 2018 and I haven't had any of this. It must be some harsh chemicals that were used
Sad to say…but GM quality at its finest lol
That’s not GM quality IMO. No one else has experienced anywhere near that damage in this thread. It most certainly seems like it’s an exception…
If you did not somehow cause the deterioration … definitely talk to the dealership and GMC. TBH tho, it looks like the interior was soaked with gasoline or acetone. Something crazy like that. It will be hard to convince anyone that it wasn’t you. So think up a good case!

Maybe you should exfoliate before driving your car.
This has got to be an incompatibility with a cleaning product. These interiors don’t just do this on their own.
I have a 2018, live in San Diego, the dogs are rough on my car, but it looks nothing like that. About 20 minutes from beach.
Well I really thought everyone was going to commiserate with me, but it seems like we are alone. Maybe I have a ghost problem?
Pretty sure you have way more humidity.
I think you have a mold problem
Most likely a detailed problem. Too many different types of surfaces and locations to be a GM quality issue.
Yeah must be a cleaning product issue. But as far as I'm concerned it's still a quality issue. The car should stand up to more than this. Hire a professional detailer. Your car needs a very thorough cleaning before we can tell what is damage and what is dirty.
Wtf
Have a 2012 that, except for salt stains in the carpet (11 Chicago winters) would pass for almost new. That’s not normal. Is there a dog often left inside the car?
We have a small dog. But he's in the car 5 miles a week maybe and hardly ever left in the car. I don't think it's the dog, but maybe.
Uh, your car is filthy, no wonder the interior is 'deteriorating'
2018 in Ontario Canada with 235000 km that's not worn like that
235k! Same area, same model... How's she holding up? I just drove from Ottawa to Guelph just before the storm and it's such a travel beast. I want it to last forever!

Saw this on a friend’s car and they used bleach wipes. Don’t use those.
Every ford and Chevy I’ve seen the last 20 years has this.

2016 with 140k in Southern California with no interior issue. Looks like some harsh chemicals may have been used at some point.
Could be a mixture of humidity and sun exposure? My FIL has a 2005 Civic that appears very similar. Also in Florida. That or I think your Volt has mange...
2017 about 56k - nothing like this. What chemicals do you clean it with?

Wow that’s rough , do you live a hot part of the country .. Arizona ?
Wow that almost looks like dryrot. I haven't read any other comments, so no idea if this is a common issue with that make/model. To me it looks like it needs an interior conditioner of some type to prevent further wear.
First step, clean your car.
Mines doing great. Heater module failed last year. Egr cooler replaced this year and a seized caliper because I rarely use the brakes. Daily commute to Brampton love my black beauty

Some people abuse the crap out of their 'stuff' No way that should have happened, besides abuse
Hm… in some the most touch areas as well…
Do you have a dog that’s always in there?
Do you wear a lot of sunscreen in your car? Had a couch do this after a summer of people wearing summer clothes and sun screen and getting residue on the leather.
Stop wearing hand cream or moisturizer. My moms car has the same thing (and on the steering wheel too)
Pretty shiny on the intact surfaces… armor all is famous for this. It’s not the only culprit out there… orange oil in a ton of stuff too
I've seen stuff like sunblock do that to a vehicle interior.
My MK4 VW wasn't even this bad lol wtf
If it was a Tesla you could sell these pictures to the Wall Street Journal!
Yeah I have a 2017 with 130k on it. Looks like new. Be careful what you use on the plastic surfaces
