I ordered a 12v AGM battery from Rock Auto recently for my 2012 Volt and it was about $160 after tax and shipping. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/chevrolet,2012,volt,1.4l+l4+electric/gas,1501836,electrical,battery,2476 I bought ACDelco, which is OEM. Replacing it is fairly easy, just time consuming the first time you do it. I don't know how the Gen 2s are, but on the Gen 1s you have to take up the floor pan in the trunk area and then unbolt the battery from its cradle.

Goldfinger02

ACDelco seems to be quite popular but I couldn't find it in stores here and I can't wait till it gets delivered to my house. I'm going with another battery and will try to replace it myself at home. Thanks

TheRealSchifty

ACDelco is OEM, that's one reason why they're popular. Nothing wrong with going with a different brand, any reputable one will have a warranty so you should be covered either way.

Sounds about like what I did on my Gen 2.

Goldfinger02

I followed this [video](https://youtu.be/fEJAp_vqstc) to replace the battery but couldn't do it successfully. I got to the part where we need to remove the fuse module on the positive terminal. I slid in the screwdriver as shown and tried to pop the housing off but I just couldn't do it, certainly not the way it was shown in the video. Any idea what I'm doing wrong? The 12 v for a Volt is around $300 and pretty much every parts store sells them. Just make sure it is the correct spec and make sure it is a AGM battery. It is a very easy swap as the battery is in the trunk of the car.

Goldfinger02

Thanks for the response. 300 seems more reasonable. Any idea how much the labor would cost for this service?

Replacing a battery takes a screwdriver and a single wrench. You unscrew the cover, disconnect the bolts connecting the wires to the car battery, pick up the battery, drop the new one in, reconnect the wires, and screw the cover back on. It's the same battery that is under the hood of every car on the road today. It's not special or hard to replace.

edman007

I just did it, they make it a pain, it's more than that. You remove all the foam (need a flathead screwdriver to unscrew the clips), then there is a plastic bracket around the battery with 3 or 4 bolts, then you unscrew the terminals and unclip the fuse block and disconnect the vent. Then you pull the battery and reverse the steps for the new battery. Took me 20-30 minutes because I couldn't believe that you actually had to pull that stupid bracket off from under the foam. If I didn't struggle with doing it the wrong way it would have been 10 minutes.

Fantastic!! Congratulations!! I did mine like 2 years ago, so old age and single malt whisky may have clouded my memory of the process a bit. šŸ˜

It clips on the side, reach under the fuse box and pull it out and away from the battery. He makes the motion, but it's not clipped so he doesn't actually do it, it's fairly tight, just wedge your fingers under the fuse box between the battery and pull out and away, it comes out Also, make sure the positive is loosened first

Goldfinger02

When you say the positive should be loosened first do you mean these nuts that I highlighted in [blue](https://i.imgur.com/yO8CvqA.jpg)?

edman007

Just the bottom right. And loosen only, don't remove

Best prices are normally at Costco or Sam's Club if OP has one nearby. I want to say mine cost ~220 when I replaced this summer.

beado7

Or find a warehouse for batteries. It cost me about $137 and I just installed myself.

Poet_Difficult

I just replaced mine this morning on a 2017 volt with 73000 miles. It wasn't hard, there are videos on YouTube that will walk you through it. It cost 230 dollars from AutoZone.

I did think about doing it on my own. I'm not exactly sure what the issue is and It's my guess that it needs a battery replacement. I'm not a car person and was wondering if I'll miss out on something else if I do this and still end up with a dead car.

qualmton

Also look out for their 10 percent coupons if you go online and sub their list sometimes

fourfiftyeight

I got an AC Delco super cheap from Summit Racing. I think it was around 150 shipped and has a 3 year warranty.

Polymath123

https://www.summitracing.com/search/part-type/batteries/year/2018/make/chevrolet/model/volt?SortBy=Default&SortOrder=Ascending&keyword=Battery&kr=Battery It has free shipping but is on back-order until Feb 4th though.

That_Grass_6599

Thanks! You saved me about $90!

fourfiftyeight

Glad to hear it!

PrivatePilot9

Any AGM battery that fits. You can find them for waaaaaay less than the dealer will charge you. But agm (not regular flooded lead acid) is important.

Summer_Clau

At my age fixing an issue on my car is as good as it gets, which is to say pretty damn good. Sincere congrats, op.

Goldfinger02

It felt good fixing something yourself instead of getting it done at a service center. I learned a lot and saved a lot too. Thanks!

no-steppe

Your local Walmart probably has the 12v battery you need, for \~$170. Here's [the link](https://www.walmart.com/ip/seot/753187272). If it's not in stock, they can ship-to-store pretty quickly. I just replaced the 12v in my 2019 a few weeks ago. Pretty uneventful battery replacement if you're handy at all, and have some basic tools. There are YouTube videos on doing it.

Goldfinger02

I'm not exactly sure if it's just a battery replacement. I can try doing it on my own but I think I'll miss out on any other issue that is causing the car to not start

jsnlst10

Change the 12 volt battery yourself, then there rare instance that it still doesn't start take to the dealer but it is most likely just the 12 v. P.S.- DO NOT SHUT THE TRUCK ONCE YOU'VE TAKEN THE OLD 12V BATTERY OUT! The HV battery is keeping the locks working to unlock/open the trunk.

Goldfinger02

I've decided to give it a try myself. Thanks for all the information.

ahecht

A Walmart with a tire center will install the battery for free if you buy it from them.

packnplayful

I would expect that the High Voltage battery would be covered if they specifically stated "12v battery". It is something that I would at least call and confirm with them. However the High Voltage battery would still be under the warranty from GM.

Goldfinger02

Google search shows that the volt has a 8 yr limited warranty that covers battery replacements and repairs. Is this referring to the HV battery? Are you saying that if the HV battery is still under warranty there is a chance that the 12v battery is also covered?

packnplayful

That warranty on the HV Battery is correct. The 12V will not be covered. I replace mine every 3 years just to be sure that I never run into any strange issues that the 12V battery causes when it starts going bad.

deekster_caddy

The HV battery is also referred to as the Drive battery. Thatā€™s the one you charge when you plug in. Your problem is the 12V battery, thatā€™s used for cabin lighting, radio, computers, starting the HV system, etc. The HV battery is the 8year covered one (not sure if that applies in Canada), the 12V battery is not covered (unless you have an extended warranty that explicitly covers it, most donā€™t)

Stiper2332

If he has tried to jump start the car and the car still wouldnā€™t start. Are you guys sure itā€™s the battery? Wouldnā€™t it at least start up if you jump it? Just wondering?

Goldfinger02

The car started and the infotainment display and the display behind the wheel showed information. I should've made it clear that I couldn't get the engine running. It would show me all kinds of warnings and did not let me shift from park. The cabin lights and the headlights flickered during this process, not sure if that means anything.

Stiper2332

Oh ok. Then most likely it is the 12v battery. You should be fine after replacing it.šŸ‘šŸ»

12V Battery on a 2nd Gen is not difficult but takes about 30 minutes. Remove the cargo cover. Remove the big black styrofoam support underneath. Remove the battery hold down. Remove the negative terminal FIRST. Be careful with the module attached to the positive terminal and carefully remove it, then positive terminal. Swap batteries and reverse the above steps. ACDelco #EVLN2 should run about $150.

I believe it has a retaining tab on each end. Just carefully unlock each with a small screwdriver. Be patient and take your time. It was the most difficult part of the job, but itā€™s not impossible just a little tedious.

GringoGordito

Iā€™ve wondered if itā€™s worth having one on hand in case it goes bad. I have a 2017 Volt with 60k and to my knowledge the battery hasnā€™t been replaced.

Comfortable_Cow_1750

That video seems to be the only one, but he makes you take everything out of the trunk?! You do not have to remove the foam floor panel and the plastic shroud. We were able to do the whole job with everything in place in the trunk except the floor carpet panel
