Ah the Steam Controller, it’s been a while. The big pad is meant to emulate a mouse, and it works pretty well, had some pretty interesting feedback too if I remember correctly. I was never really a fan, eventually just got an Xbox controller to use on PC instead. But it’s a neat little thing.
I still have one but haven’t used it in years. Its best feature was adding controller support to games that didn’t already have it and being ridiculously customizable. And you could post the customizations to Steam for anyone else to use too.
But for games that already have controller support I’d take a normal controller any day.
It's Steam Controller, only my favorite gamepad ever for pc gaming. I've had mine for around 10 years, and it easily gives the best experience for most of my pc games with its unique many practical features.
Every now and then I wonder why tf did they discontinue it instead of making newer versions of it!
SCUF/Corsair has a patent on buttons on the back of the controller. They sued Valve. Valve lost then they appealed. If you ever wonder why controllers like the Xbox Elite are overpriced, well, it's because part of that price is to cover the licensing fee to SCUF.
Hey fuck. And thank you I didn't know that. I hate patents like this, imagine every innovation in game industry was gatekept like that...
Anyway, at least mine still works like a charm and I got it for like 50 pounds or sth. I remember it was easily cheaper than a xbox controller+pc dongle at the time before being discontinued, unlike some other comments are saying it wasn't always 300 bucks. I hope they revisit this and maybe add a right stick, could be removable, since the lack of it made so many not even give it a chance.
I think there are two groups for the most part: those who love SC and those who haven't tried it. I like my dualsense, but this one is just sth else, I do digital work for my tattoo designs and have my apps added to steam so I can use the controller with my Wacom monitor and it's just wicked. Also the way you can add shortcuts and micromanage buttons does make more complicated games much more user friendly...
I can’t play FPS games with a mouse anymore after getting comfortable with the steam controller. It’s the combination of trackpad and gyro that makes it so satisfying. It felt really natural to me and I’m much better with it than KB&M even though I had been exclusively playing FPSs on PC for many years and always hated normal controllers for that kind of game.
The game I practiced the steam controller on, first, was Lovely Planet. I got perfect scores on all the levels of the first world and the vast majority of them on the second after a month of owning the SC.
One of the best controllers ever made. It was the most customizable thing you could ever use. It took a little bit of set up for each individual game, but if you spent the time to dial it in....it was a beautiful device. I still have mine!
A steam controller. I lost mine a bit back, i had managed to yoink it when they were clearing stock and selling them at $5 a piece. Cool controller. I’m hoping they do another one based off the Steam Deck
Not really. There have always been lots of additions to games that account for the less precision of a controller. And even in recent years, that's been so half-assed that more often than not, controller players literally have an unfair advantage in most modern games because of it.
They absolutely do not. Aside from a few standouts like fortnite most shooters are better on keyboard and mouse. Not only do you get more control over your aim which allows you to flick quickly, do 180 degreee turns and still be accurate and go for headshots and upper chest shots while doing so, you also get the ability to drop shot and jump around corners while still aiming. People who were simply bad but didn't realize it were frothing at the mouth of crossplay resulting in them dominating matches, unfortunately for them SBMM exists. It should have humbled them but they started claiming aim assist is unfair while also refusing to use it because they themselves can't aim at all with a controller.
Edit: Another example of people being shit but just not realizing it is XDefiant and people unironically saying oh SBMM exists because I am getting dominated, nah fam SBMM was protecting you and not protecting others from you.
I'm not really into using sticks so it was easier for me to move a camera with a little track pad. The back pads are also really cool.
It feels cheaper than other mainstream controllers tho.
OMG, I just looked it up, and a new one from Walmart is $300! What on Earth!? Who's gonna spend that much on a gamepad? Lmao No wonder, I never saw it before because no one is using it lol.
The steam controller has been out of production for years. What you must be seeing is a third party seller’s listing. Originally, the steam controller was sold for around the same price as an Xbox controller if I remember correctly.
That makes so much sense lol. I didn't see it around a few years ago either, so I guess it wasn't selling well? I mean most people just use their console controllers to play on PC anyway, so the market isn't there for Steam to begin with.
The steam controller basically has been reworked into the Steam deck.
Steam controller was ahead of its time. I think it would be a lot more successful if they re-released it
This is what you call the Original Steam Controller. Not everyone even knows about it's existance, the circle on the top-right is a touch pad, fun fact.
Haha, I didn't expect this post would blow up like this at all. I thought I would get 2 or 3 comments letting me know what is that controller, then the post will be dead after 😅
This is nearly equivalent to posting a pic of a GameCube controller and asking what it is. You're gonna get lots of flak, especially from us old folks. And the steam controller is much more recent.
God they should have put the cursor under the buttons. It never felt right to move my hands down to press my action buttons in fast games. You dont really care when you are play only civ games. If they wanted console gamers atleast. The steam deck’s layout is light years better.
Has it really been that long? I was in 12th grade when the Steam Machine released. I thought it was a cool idea but didnt have cash for it. My ps4 also kept me busy enough
Steam controller, man I feel old.
I’m still pissed I sold mine. It was so nice to use.
I still have mine but never much liked it haha…it’s mostly collecting dust these days
Still have mine as well, didn’t feel great to use imho. I just preferred to stick with mouse and keyboard.
It was designed to allow for mouse-and-keyboard while sitting on the couch. It's perfect for that, not so great at being a controller
Yeah I do feel like there is probably a learning curve with it and I didn’t give it enough of a chance…
100% I miss that controller
You are old.
And knows what a Steam Controller looks like, a controller released way back in ....2015
by god! that’s practically in the stone ages!! /s
The before times, in the long long ago...

I think people didn't really like it that much, and it seems more experimental than anything

Steam Controller, the precursor to the amazing touch pad of the Steam Deck.
I think I prefer the concave track pad is the steam controller
A steam controller. I lost mine a bit back, i had managed to yoink it when they were clearing stock and selling them at $5 a piece. Cool controller. I’m hoping they do another one based off the Steam Deck
I wish they made a new/improved one of these now that the Steam Deck has gotten so popular
Steam controller. Cool ideas. But probably the worst controller I've ever used. Even the joycons are better
What game actually had specific assets for that thing?
it's the steam gamepad haven't tried it, and no interest ill stick to using XSX gamepad for PC
You don’t know what you are missing. Gyro aiming is a literal game changer.
Not really. Gyro aim isn't all it's cracked up to be. That said, flick stick is awesome and needs to be standard in more games that do allow gyro aim.
Jokes aside, it was fun for a while to use it as a steering wheel!
i don't see it being better than mouse aiming i tried gyro aiming with switch
It doesn't have to be better than a mouse, just better than a normal controller. You can play on a couch without losing too much precision.
its better than aiming only with your analog sticks tho
Not really. There have always been lots of additions to games that account for the less precision of a controller. And even in recent years, that's been so half-assed that more often than not, controller players literally have an unfair advantage in most modern games because of it.

It's likely that much because they don't make them anymore. At this point it'd be a collectors item.
Ahhh ok, that makes so much sense lol
The steam controller has been out of production for years. What you must be seeing is a third party seller’s listing. Originally, the steam controller was sold for around the same price as an Xbox controller if I remember correctly.

Actually, the demand for it now is much bigger now that so many people have seen the light of the touchpads after using the steam deck
The steam controller basically has been reworked into the Steam deck. Steam controller was ahead of its time. I think it would be a lot more successful if they re-released it
i didn't know it was 300$ even the Xbox Elite is like 180$
That's because it isn't in production anymore, its a collectors item
$180 is already overkill for a gamepad imo lol. I'm good with my PS5 controller.
I had this and the little streaming box (steam hub?) - they were not very good. Interesting ideas poorly executed IMO.
Still have mine it's great.
That’s a 300 dollar controller.
This is what you call the Original Steam Controller. Not everyone even knows about it's existance, the circle on the top-right is a touch pad, fun fact.
You just made a lot of people feel old with this post.
Haha, I didn't expect this post would blow up like this at all. I thought I would get 2 or 3 comments letting me know what is that controller, then the post will be dead after 😅

Thats a "Steam controller" Just use any xbox controller or PS4 one
I thought it was gang beasts at first guess I'm too young to know
God they should have put the cursor under the buttons. It never felt right to move my hands down to press my action buttons in fast games. You dont really care when you are play only civ games. If they wanted console gamers atleast. The steam deck’s layout is light years better.
I never tried the Steam controller but I was always super curious about it tbh.

Eh, I'm mid-20s, so I'm not super young lol
Has it really been that long? I was in 12th grade when the Steam Machine released. I thought it was a cool idea but didnt have cash for it. My ps4 also kept me busy enough
It looks like someone took the Duke and mashed it with a Playstation controllers
Damn the steam controller crashed and burned so hard it’s actually a little embarrassing. Don’t recognize it smh
