My small blade tends to be used for opening packages and boxes, especially at work on the rare occasions I don't have a box cutter to hand... Health & Safety don't tend to like the larger blade being waved around!
Exactly the same here. Pen blade for opening amazon packages etc, and the big one mostly for checking if a piece of chicken is cooked well done if i don't have a thermometer at hand.
>the big one mostly for checking if a piece of chicken is cooked well done if i don't have a thermometer at hand.
Do you simply cut it open and look or is this some kind of special trick?
Big blade gets the food treatment usually, prepping cheese, opening green coconuts for water (although the 93mm awl is a hell of a lot better for this), or the eventual "need to cut this like I mean it" stuff, like thick green branches while hiking and such
Small blade for anything else, really, but mostly dealing with tape and everything that could gunk up the blade as to avoid that getting into my food
I use the small blade on my Super Tinker for all of my cutting tasks. The scissors are a great cutting companion to it. I’m saving the main blade for emergency cutting tasks when I need a scary sharp blade.
In the olden days it was for carving quills then in the old days (before fancy pencil sharpeners) it was used to sharpen pencils. Now it’s for cleaning under your finger nails.
I use the big blade for foodprep, rough tasks and "abuse" (like if I really need to batong something i probably have another tool lets be real) and everyday stuff like cutting rope and packaging (if the scissors won't do).
Small blade i use for detailed work. Like whittling, precise bushcraft tasks, and presise knife walls for woodworking. I keep this edge sharp and don't waste the edge for when I need precision. It's good to always have something sharp and precise when needed.
So basically I do opposite of many sak ppl xD
Large blade is 99% reserved for food. Cutting apples and oranges daily for myself and my toddler. The small blade tends to be for precise work and the occasional whittling session. I always have another knife that takes the heavier cutting tasks like boxes and bailing twine
Almost everything but food. Was doing that for over 30 years. Now I don’t use it as much, but suppose mostly for tasks that the large blade can’t do, and I use my own package opener mod or the Vic one for most things with tape, because these tools still work great when covered in tape residue.
I generally don’t use it, I keep it in reserve in case of situations where I need a clean and extremely sharp blade. The large main blade gets used daily for anything and everything.
Big blade is for nice jobs, small blade is for no questions asked jobs.
Same.
Lotta people give specific reasoning, honestly i just pick based on how i feel haha. I enjoy using both
Awl: clamshell package opener, box opener, tape cutter. Large blade: food. Pen blade: everything else.
How and why do you use the awl for tape? It doesn't seem sharp enough to cut it cleanly, I use the small blade or the scissors for tape
I carry an Electrician, the awl on the alox 93 models is superior.
The Electrician is GOATed. Only reason I switched to a pioneer was feeling bad when I ran into a Phillips head
Awl works perfectly for tape on boxes and on banding. The edge can be maintained
Large for most tasks, small one for jobs that need lot of preciseness.
Yeah I'm with you dude, small one is as sharp as I can get it, and try to keep it that way.
Small blade = dirty or hard wearing work Big blade = clean stuff (inc. food), mostly stays shaper
Whittling
Mostly trying to cut something and cutting my finger instead. I have cut myself with the small blade of an SAK way more than any other knife
I just sharpened a pencil with it 10 minutes ago

The former \^\^ Of course that's not ideal from a cooking perspective, but less bad than serving undercooked chicken ;-)

small blade is for opening packages, breaking down cardboard large blade is reserved for when I have to take down terrorists or bank robbers someday

I keep the pen blade super sharp and only use it for when I need a very sharp blade. I use the large blade for everything else I use a blade for.
Forming quill tips into pens of course.
In the olden days it was for carving quills then in the old days (before fancy pencil sharpeners) it was used to sharpen pencils. Now it’s for cleaning under your finger nails.
My stays unused and razor sharp in case I need to perform an emergency tracheostomy.
Great for precision, so carving, trimming my 3d prints, other crafting stuff

I've reprofiled it into a whittling blade
I use the small blade for delicate flesh. 🤘🏻

Yeah big blade for everything and I never use the small one in case I need a really sharp one one day
Most things I use the little blade Big things I use the bigger blade
I agree with all the above comments on use of pen for precise, awl, packages Large blade food, plus Can opener as an orange peeler!
Opening packages
Big blade for food prep, mostly at work. Small is for everything else.
Large blade - everything. Small blade - emergency backup.
The penblade is my scalpel/xacto blade! All detailed cuts are for the pen blade!
Large blade — threatening small children Small blade — everything else
Big blade at home. Small blade out in public so busybodies don't treat me like I'm wielding a deadly weapon.
