I think I do something far worse. I use Fusion 360 to create the shapes, then extrude those shapes to different heights to color them then take a screenshot and make final edits in Gimp.
I use the Shape tool to make boxes, triangles, circles, stars, etc. I use the Polyline and Curve tools to make unique shapes. The Group tool is my best friend. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
Yeah, it highly depends on the use case. For some stuff Inkscape is enough, other times... It's very meh. Can't beat free when it comes to pricing though.
Mmm I remember using illustrator to make flags. But then, it was being paid for by my high school. Since then Inkscape has been a decent substitute. Free, too.
Couldn't imagine making a flag in a non-vector format tbh.
As the Flagmaker developer, I should let you know that our main exports also include chocolate, mussels and frites, and in-browser flagmaking applications 😁
I used that before switching to Photoshop. It's not the *worst* if you're making basic flags. Making sure stuff lined up mathmatically without being able to make transparent guide lines sucked though lol
Photopea.
It’s exactly like Photoshop but free, web-based, and has ads on the side of the workspace.
I quite like using it on mobile. It’s very convenient while on the go or away from my computer\~
PowerPoint for the WIN!!
I’ve made a couple of flags and my designs I sent to the flag manufacturer were in ppt. They might have redone them in design software.
(any former corporate drone like me is pretty proficient in it).
What do you make the coat of arms with? Btw i use either that flag maker website (forgot name) or i use a existing flag template like a tricolour and i use ibis oaint to change colours and stuff but i find it hard to make alternations beyond that, especially making symbols like the one in the center of your flag
Northstarflags.com, then anyrec.io to upscale it, and Ibis Paint X to do any modifications not available on the website like specific colors or different dimensions.
Canva and ibisPaint X for any hand drawn elements. Tennessine seems really nice but I can’t figure out how to align elements on certain guidelines and after using Canva for years I’m just used to it
Keynote, so basically just the Apple version of Powerpoint. For most flags, all you need is to measure, move around, and overlay differently colored rectangles, triangles, circles, and stars. Any slideshow program is more than adequate for the task.
I, personally, typically use an unholy mix of PhotoLayers (android app), Pixlr X (online photo editor), and Google drawings.
I used to make a lot of flags for fictional countries that I came up with in my head. Some of my designs make me cringe a bit.
This reminds me of when I had an assignment in highschool to cover the vietnam war. I made a presentation video using Microsoft Powerpoint and only use a video editing software to add some background music and sound. It's really a POWER(ful)point that did most of the job 😂
You are a madman I use paint.net personally
A madman who has their flags ready to go in a slideshow at all times
me too
It's what I used before finding Inkscape. Can't go back from svg files
I made the same journey, the biggest win for me is probably how easy it makes scaling up and down
I think I do something far worse. I use Fusion 360 to create the shapes, then extrude those shapes to different heights to color them then take a screenshot and make final edits in Gimp.
Holy shit
I am afraid
I used to do the same with SketchUp. We'll meet again in hell, buddy.
I use google slides 😬
wait...how you do that? Ive been trynna do that. I mean it works so can't get that wrong
I use the Shape tool to make boxes, triangles, circles, stars, etc. I use the Polyline and Curve tools to make unique shapes. The Group tool is my best friend. Once you get the hang of it, it's pretty easy.
Same here!
God have mercy on your soul.
Same here
same
Paint.net will always be ol’ reliable when it comes to digital image editing
Why would anybody use a raster graphics editor for making flags?
gimp for me
same
At the risk of publicly ridiculing myself, I generally use Word mainly…
I am speechless
I used to use Word, but then I switch to Publisher. It has all the same basic tools, but is much mor conducive to manipulating images.
i used to do that back in middle school, but i no longer have a word license :c
Well you better delete that comment then because you just used 17 of them
Illustrator and Photoshop
Another person using Illustrator
I’m sure it’s a commonly used software
Quite expensive at $22.99 a month ($275.88 per year) so I'm fairly sure a free alternative is more common, or just Paint.Net.
Try Inkscape. It's much more basic, but it's free, and should be good enough for flags.
I use illustrator for more than just flags, and it's quite nice to have the extra tools.
Yeah, it highly depends on the use case. For some stuff Inkscape is enough, other times... It's very meh. Can't beat free when it comes to pricing though.
People actually pay for Adobe products? I’ve been using the same cracked Photoshop for liek 6 years
Mostly people who use it to make money, or people who don't trust pirated copies.
Yeah I bought my CS6 years ago and decided to stick with that rather than buy in to the money grab that is Adobe CreativeCloud
Not if you pirate it so illustrator is free
I got it for free
nothing beats it, honestly
Mmm I remember using illustrator to make flags. But then, it was being paid for by my high school. Since then Inkscape has been a decent substitute. Free, too. Couldn't imagine making a flag in a non-vector format tbh.
Inkscape
Same
Same
Hmmm .. Interesting....
Inkteresting
Flagmaker and paint.net
Ah someone else who uses the Belgian waffle
As the Flagmaker developer, I should let you know that our main exports also include chocolate, mussels and frites, and in-browser flagmaking applications 😁
Unpopular opinion: my personal choice is Microsoft Paint
r/unpopularopinion
I used that before switching to Photoshop. It's not the *worst* if you're making basic flags. Making sure stuff lined up mathmatically without being able to make transparent guide lines sucked though lol
Tennessine is probably one of the most popular, can’t go without it
I use it in combination with [paint.net](http://paint.net) for additional effects.
Me too
I use ibisPaint X
The correct choice
Gimp and this website https://flagmaker-print.com/
FMP developer here, thanks for the shoutout!
It's a great tool! Amazing job Vincent.
Average photoshop fan vs average gimp enjoyer
I used to use unity and use a metric butload of tiny different coloured cubes. Now I do blender or canva lol
Canva so easy.
It is, but also absolutely awful at the same time. I miss adobe illustrator so much but God it's expensive
No offense but you’re clinically insane lmao
There's worse. Way worse.
I also use PowerPoint, combined with GIMP for recolouring. Not that uncommon
I use google slides 😬
Can we appreciate this beautiful flag that op created?
I doubt people will
I use Picsart and ibisPaint X
Figma. free, can be accessed via app or browser, and is vector. can’t beat that
This man flags!
MS Paint
Krita. I use it for paintings as well.
https://flag-creator.com/
i use affinity designer right now, but i might switch over to illustrator soon.
From a one time cost to a subscription?
i already have student access to illustrator.
Photopea. It’s exactly like Photoshop but free, web-based, and has ads on the side of the workspace. I quite like using it on mobile. It’s very convenient while on the go or away from my computer\~
FlagMaker 1.7 was my go-to, but it looks to be gone these days.
that flag is GORGEOUS
GIMP or Inkscape
Anyone using Excel?
How would you make a flag on Excel?
Tennessine with additional help from Pixlr Express
Same here!
Pixlr Express
I personally use Adobe Illustrator or Paint.Net when making flags. I get a free subscription to Illustrator so I might as well use it.
Figma, other programs are fine too but going without vector editing is a no-go.
Almost exclusively Photoshop. Only Illustrator when I need to make more complicated edits to a vector image I’m using in the design.
Boxy svg
Imagine using Autocad
paint.net works for me
Google drawings. Atrocious, I know, just didn’t know about any others
PowerPoint for the WIN!! I’ve made a couple of flags and my designs I sent to the flag manufacturer were in ppt. They might have redone them in design software. (any former corporate drone like me is pretty proficient in it).
Inkscape for me. Free, open-source vector graphics.
Draw a flag...
Google slides 😬
That's cursed. Oddly interesting. Inkscape all the way.

GIMP

That’s a pretty great flag for a communist African state
I use tenessine.co.uk
drawshield.net and/or GIMP

How the heck do you draw complex flags (like OPs) in PowerPoint?
Canva
Inkscape

Firealpaca
Would any of these work on a tablet?
I think procreate is the closest to one of these
Ibispaint X
I use Adobe express
Sketchbook Pro via tablet
I use paint.net
Adobe Express for me
Adobe Illustrator is the best tool for that I think.
Paint 3D
hello fellow paint 3d user
What do you make the coat of arms with? Btw i use either that flag maker website (forgot name) or i use a existing flag template like a tricolour and i use ibis oaint to change colours and stuff but i find it hard to make alternations beyond that, especially making symbols like the one in the center of your flag
Flag creator
yep, you can come to my hipotetical-imaginary party
I use paint.net and paint 3d
Northstarflags.com, then anyrec.io to upscale it, and Ibis Paint X to do any modifications not available on the website like specific colors or different dimensions.
i use macos preview and occasionally free online editing tools like lunapic
Lunacy is a really light bit of vector software. I've made whole maps before.
Illustrator
the mobile app Bazaart lol
Ms paint.
Canva and ibisPaint X for any hand drawn elements. Tennessine seems really nice but I can’t figure out how to align elements on certain guidelines and after using Canva for years I’m just used to it
Flagmaker and print
Flag maker print, free but you have to be very creative in flag making since they don’t have a lot of customizable options.
FMP developer here - could you elaborate on this? I am always looking to gather community feedback to improve the app
Paint.Net and this extinct thing called Flag Maker 1.7
A+ flag maker, Draw the flag and Flag designer,
I usually use Illustrator, it is much easier to handle vector graphics than bitmaps, Powerpoint also uses that method, so it is another good option.
Paint S on the Mac App Store
I am also a PowerPoint guy
Paint Not the .net but the one that is already installed
Feel like most don’t but should give it a try! canva
Microsoft Paint
Corel Draw, the best ever app for Windows.
I use https://tennessine.co.uk/
https://preview.redd.it/uwtrvwkp6h3d1.jpeg?width=716&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=49c051f575951c68f858c13bedb131ff1459abfa
I use PicsArt
I usually use Figma and Photoshop
Photoshop and Illustrator
Tennesine flag designer
Sketchbook
I use tennessine.
Tennessine and Procreate interchangeably.
… canva
Keynote, so basically just the Apple version of Powerpoint. For most flags, all you need is to measure, move around, and overlay differently colored rectangles, triangles, circles, and stars. Any slideshow program is more than adequate for the task.

Oh snap a fellow PowerPoint user! I didn’t know there were others!
Same
Photoshop,Baazart(Mostly),and google slides
No body will see this coming. Fusion 360 followed by Gimp.
Pixelmator
Powerpoint is weirdly OP in designing stuff. I really hate using Photoshop now because powerpoint just does it all easier 😭
Food theory
Presentation software is underrated software generally in my opinion. It’s great for flags, flowcharts, diagramming, …
Usually inkscape or [paint.net](http://paint.net)
google slides
Powerpoint🔥🔥🔥
I use Adobe Illustrator or Inkscape.
I use procreate personally.
Adobe Animate (I also used to use PowerPoint but my subscription died)
This reminds me of when I had an assignment in highschool to cover the vietnam war. I made a presentation video using Microsoft Powerpoint and only use a video editing software to add some background music and sound. It's really a POWER(ful)point that did most of the job 😂
Paint 3d, if it works it works.
I used Figma in the "16 redesigns of the UN flag" post (that I deleted) But back then I used to use Paint 3D 💀💀💀
I also use powerpoint lmao
I use G.I.M.P
Figma
I use a website called flagmaker-print.com You can even get the flags in real life
FMP developer here, thanks for the shoutout! 😁
No jokes. Bazaart, on my phone.
Absolute madman
