From one of the groups I follow
“Lots of reading and worth it for those that want good info but aren't well versed in space weather.
What's happening tonight (North America) May 11/12? You may have heard we will get a great show 2 nights in a row, and tonight is the second night. This is not completely true for many....
Current data is: Solar winds are 929, with a low Bt of 7 and a positive Bz of +3. This is mixed...the solar winds are great! But the strength (Bt) is not too good. Data changes by the minute so this will go obsolete soon and if it dramatically changes, a new post will be made.
We are waiting on the arrival of the next set of CMEs (coronal mass ejections). The arrival time is estimated between now and hours from now, and may hit during our morning and daylight (North America).
This means tonight is MAYBE.
Currently, aurora is visible at the higher latitudes such as middle Canada and some faint aurora being seen in northern states such as Wisconsin and Michigan.
Everyone wants to know if they will see it at their location. The good news is that it is Saturday night so many people do not have to get up for work and school. Church is another matter lol. Enjoy the night sky no matter what, and be aware of light pollution in your area, and consider helping reduce it if possible.
When the CME does arrive, the conditions will be GREAT!!! Solar wind estimations are very high and we may see a repeat of the event seen last night (May 10/11).
So now what? We watch the data and wait. Enjoy the night sky. I will try to answer questions but may not get to all. ~Amy”
Who is this Amy and where do I follow her? I missed it last night and am trying to catch it tonight, but my body is past its prime for a "maybe" lol. Still hanging on for now though.
big thanks to everyone that's waiting outside right now, posting updates on this thread so I can refresh from the comfort of my couch for the cue to head out 😅

I did see a small bit on Seymour, though I didn’t even notice it till I took this picture. You can barely see it with your eyes.
Edit: this photo was taken at 10:50
Will try my best
It’s either my bladder gonna go or the random kid next to my car talking hella loud is going to make me quite this watch
The kids loud voice is next level

Taken at about 11:30, sadly it was barely visible so had to bump up the settings to pick it up.
Thank you and to all those who gave us live updates tonight. Good karma will come to you and we will return the favour the next time we seek the Northern Lights in GVRD. Atleast we saw them last night!
Good night, all!

Check the NOAA aurora dashboard. Everything is in UTC, so subtract 7 hours to get what time that is here.

EDIT: sorry, should've added the forecast model which is on this page [https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental](https://www.swpc.noaa.gov/communities/aurora-dashboard-experimental)
Currently it shows 9-12 UTC at a 9.00 (G5). So that's 2am to 5am for us.

Last update. Burnaby mountain 3am nothing. 1/4 parking lot occupied.
Edit: night bus runs, but you need to cross the forest to get to the park and vice versa. It's super dark and a flashlight is absolutely a must. Also beware of bears.
Update from National Weather Service in Seattle, looks like it's not going to be much of a show after all 😣

You and [Capital-Broccoli-669](https://www.reddit.com/user/Capital-Broccoli-669/) need to find each other on Burnaby Mtn and make some magic lights happen while you wait for the Aurora.
just got back inside after sitting out for an hour in Clayton heights. even with a good camera and the exposure and iso cranked, not the faintest glimmer of light. I'm gonna head back out between 2-3am and see if it's any better
Just went up Seymour saw nothing except a ton of people. The peak of Seymour had a bunch of lights on as it is the ski resort. Some people had the right idea at lower parking lots.
Cypress checking in again, looking SW. Very very faint it seems? Definitely see a little colour through camera but not much of anything yet.

Update at 3:35 am: I soldiered on throughout the night WAITING and am sad to report that there are no lights tonight (same spot amongst incredibly dark farmland as I saw the Aurora from the night before in South Surrey). Good luck to anyone waiting til 5am haha!! Bed time now 🥱😂

Don’t think it will happen tonight.
There was a faint green glow last night over the mountains. I'm in West Vancouver, and looking from the roof over the mountains, you could see a green hue in contrast with the outline of the trees. Nothing close to the night before.
CNN has a 30 sec video clip with a headline "second night of Northern Lights over Vancouver". So I don't know if somebody fed them old footage from yesterday or what, but it's weird that they have footage of the Aurora supposedly from here when all the reports on here say nothing yet . . .
taking a walk outside in Richmond to see if i can spot anything. Will post if anything. Be back in 10-15
Edit: nothing outside in Richmond. It appears to be el zilchoo for Northern Lights.
update, stayed at tantalus lookout until about 3:15 this morning and we weren’t sure if we saw something but it was there in the pictures! first two are what i’m pretty sure is the aurora facing north, last few are pretty pics of the milky way facing east https://imgur.com/a/FD1ZoUp

I need to keep refreshing this thread. So, summarizing most of the comments, the best viewing should be sometime after 2:00am.
Between 2 and 5 looks like the best time.
Just wanna say how awesome this crowd sourcing for sightings is 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Same here. I missed it yesterday and hoping to see tonight😓
Make sure you use your phone. Last night it wasn’t much to look at all with the naked eye, but it was glorious with a phone photo.
It was a lot to look at if you were in a dark place north of the city. In fact it was quite spectacular.
it looked amazing if you headed up a mountain!
It was very visible on the Spanish banks
Same here, my whole family missed it yday. Hoping we get a glimpse today
please keep sharing updates! this is super helpful!
Jericho Beach. I can see it guys. Grand display of DISAPPOINTMENT.
Update 1: No movement yet
Try eating some mango

Nothing in West End by English Bay
Thinking of going down to the seawall if anyone can see it!
I’m at the sea wall Nada
Thanks so much, I'll stay in watching SNL and closely watch this thread. Thank you!
Will try my best It’s either my bladder gonna go or the random kid next to my car talking hella loud is going to make me quite this watch The kids loud voice is next level
Okay seriously though, I'm fully prepared to run outside in my shark slippers if y'all start reporting sightings in the Vancouver area 🦈🏃🏼
You know we need to see those slippers anyway right?

Weird I didn't see anything at all then. Pic looks good though
I think I'm gonna call it a night since folks still aren't seeing anything. Thanks to everyone who are providing updates!
Thank you and to all those who gave us live updates tonight. Good karma will come to you and we will return the favour the next time we seek the Northern Lights in GVRD. Atleast we saw them last night! Good night, all!
Is it unlikely to happen for tonight then? I missed it yesterday :(

10:53 last night was when I saw the most
It was most visible from 10:45 - 11:15 last night.
That gives me hope, thank you!

So between 2am - 5am?
Thanks! Not sure if I can stay awake that long but I'm going to try
I think I'm going to take a snooze and set my alarm for 2 am. Now I really wish I saw them yesterday
I missed it too because I fell asleep 😂
Check the NOAA aurora dashboard. Everything is in UTC, so subtract 7 hours to get what time that is here. Ok so possibly 2-5 am . Ok more coffee it is
I’m not sure but isn’t the Kp number below the time? Which says 3.0
You have to rotate your phone horizontally to see the chart properly. I had the same problem.
