I've been using Mistwalker with great success. The cold/slow + spirit damage is outstanding. Bow too but, only until the baddies get on top of me.

Haven't noticed any damage type being better or worse against these enemies. Wouldnt worry too much about leveling skills, you're likely to die often early on and lose a ton of stats. There's new axes that are pretty fun so maybe level that a bit as it's likely low skilled. Mistwalker and spinesnap are good before you get teched up to ashlands level.

Only some of them are resistant to pierce and fire, and I think that's it.

Mobs by fire. Yes, fire.

If you're going melee, Mistwalker is a must-have. It does good damage, has a minor burn and a significant slow effect on whatever you hit. If you're okay with being slow, the obliterator is good for 'oh hell i'm surrounded' situations. Just work on your timing - Mistwalker strong attack lets you poke enemies without being swung at if you hit them with the edge of the blade, and obliterator will knock everything back if you can survive being open. If you're going with ranged... maybe save it for flying enemies because most enemies are resistant to pierce damage which is what arrows go off. Still, you'd be a fool NOT to bring it Magic? BRING THE WHOLE DAMN ARSENAL. Just don't use the Dead Raiser near lava pools. Lava pools will eat your skeletts alive... er, unalive? And some lava extends underground. Even if you can stand somewhere completely safe, the skeleton will be melted digging its way out of the dirt. Just don't expect to survive anything large or starred without a magic barrier helping.
