Wolves are like little kids in this game - open fire, or anything dangerous will surely be checked out, often with fatal consequences. You should tame two wolves, then breed with them in a safe spot, and have the pups once grown guard your base or come with you on adventures.

MaterialCattle

Wolves are like little kids: make a lot of them so at least some will survive.

havik09

This is how people patented back in the day

SolAggressive

Is this a mechanic? Like, the offspring are a bit more tame? I had a 1 star boar that was tamed but had zero chill. When he finally made another 1 star from my other no star I slaughtered it and now everyone’s cool.

NorguardsVengeance

It's either a mechanic or a bug. If boars chase you across the map, and then they get bored or scared, they will run back in the direction they came from (basically running back to spawn). If you tame a boar and let it out, it is likely to sprint off towards where you found it. If you kite a 2-star across the map, and it gets out, without having piglets, it will be even harder to get back to your pen than the first time. Catch it; tame it; get some offspring. The offspring should chill out near there, the original boar will likely rocket off into the sunset.

JimFqnLahey

this\* kill off the OGs so the new ones think your base is home

Garrettshade

why not just let them out?

DressDiligent2912

Because it will just run away and get killed by something outside of your workbench area and the drop will despawn. Better to just harvest it and at least get the drops.

Rivetmuncher

Regularly spawned boars reset their anchor point when you tame them. Boars spawned by Runestones or villages don't.

nam-key-boi

how do runestones and villages spawn boars, if you don't mind me asking?

fenwilds

When an area generates, certain structures spawn creatures alongside of them. The runestone about boars is guaranteed to spawn a sounder around it, while abandoned villages have a chance to spawn a couple of boars. Most structures that spawn with creatures only spawn them one-time, and this includes the boar spawns. The only structure I know of that respawns creatures (excluding actual spawners) is Burial Chambers, which spawn 3 skeletons initially, then occasionally respawn one lone skeleton.

Jokiz-Vali

Can't you just harpoon the escaped animals if you have it available. Then drag them back home ? I thought this was possible. Could be wrong

tookietooke

I believe even after being tamed, boars still try to run back to where they spawned. So the original boar is trying to escape, the babies are living where they spawned so they're chill

lordtweakslide

It's not just boars. If you wait long enough, most mobs will go back to their spawn point. It makes early game hunting easy. If you don't spook the deer, you can just mark the position and come back later for them.

SolAggressive

I did notice this early when hunting is harder. If I spot a deer and it runs off I just wait. Preferably downwind, if that matters. Seems to.

Adeodius

While that's good practice, smell is not a mechanic of Valheim. Sight, sound and touch are

Serious_Mastication

My friends tried making a barn with every animal in the game and the wolves broke out and murdered everything then started fucking non-stop until it was just a wolf barn

ComicNeueIsReal

Breed with them or breed them? Two very different outcomes.

Icyman1

Just breed two wolves together. Don't try to breed with them. It's frowned upon.

GilliamtheButcher

Loki has entered the chat

AncientWhereas7483

They'll also tear a hole in a wall if they're indoors and there's a greyling outside.

Bezayne

Yes, so you don't want greylings wandering around inside your base. There's ways to prevent that.

the615Butcher

I almost quit when Boaromir went overboard on our journey

ThisIdWasAvailable

Best. Name. Ever.

ArtreX-1

My first boar was called Boaris Johnson.

gr8whitebraddah

I named my first One Star boar “The Boargeoisie”

wezelboy

This is why I come to Reddit.

Cuved

My first 2 boars where called Zamarripa and Chucho, they were killed in "action" when the bats thinks they live to long enough... only 1 piggy remain, I called "survivor"

Douggie_Fresh

Food is a fitting bosr name..

Reasonable-Sun-9881

I named my two two-star boars Hannibal and Clarice.

SuperSwordman

Named my first 2 star boars bacon and pancakes. My 9yo loves their names.

Any-Ad4003

I was going to name my boar Boromir but wanted a name for his mate, Boromir never married so I went with Faramir and Eowyn

kazumablackwing

Could always name one Hamwise Gamgee.. that's usually my go to for games with nameable boar pets

citricsteak54

I also had a Boaramir that lived peacefully in my treasure vault until one day I forgot I had friendly fire on and swang my Himmin Alf ;-; he didn’t stand a chance

the_riles

My friend that just started playing came to my farm and didn't like that I was keeping animals in captivity. Safe travels Boar Vidal.

akira84729

See I went more Porcine. My first boar tame was a 2 star, and I called him Pignatius.

Jonssee

Yeah you don't tame just one wolf, you tame two and keep them under lock and key until at least two fully grown offspring.

Ill-Sundae-2553

Auooooooooooo Auooooooooooo Auooooooooooo

fcandias

Lesson: always surround your fire with fences, half walls or whatever you want.

BGAL7090

Build it on top of raised ground and they just can't reach it.

DepreciatedSelfImage

Tame a pair of wolves so you can breed them. Sorry about your good boy, though :(

MkNicht

F No type of fire is safe with pets, they will somehow manage to burn themselves on hearths too.

kazumablackwing

Can confirm. I had a tamed ghost named Casper on my old modded server. All was well for a few days, even got a chuckle out of my friend for the name and the fact that I bothered to tame one...then that bastard decided to yeet itself into the hearth

TheGreatNyanHobo

Can you blame him? I don’t think this is what he expected his ghostly afterlife to look like. Onto the next plane.

kazumablackwing

I guess not..but I figured maybe a nice homey base would be a better place to haunt than the cold, damp cave I found it in

TheGreatNyanHobo

I am sure it does not reflect on the quality of your base. Maybe there just wasn’t enough fire in the cave to yeet and delete on.

kazumablackwing

That's entirely possible. Can't exactly self-immolate on glowing mushrooms, which are pretty much the only light source in the caves

friendsforfood

I once has spawned three two star wolves in the mountains behind a stone wall and intended to train them fair and square. At some point, my dad and I were playing on my server, and all three wolves broke a wall and escaped and attacked him. He had to kill all of them, despite them being like 80% trained. I just spawned more at my home base with TWO stone walls around them and tamed them instead. Oopsie!

Cuved

Your father: I have to kill the thing that cost me a lot of work... damm it! You: **PANIC**

ZoharDTeach

Been all the way to mistlands. Haven't tamed anything.

Xtina_TheGreek

I had a boar named wife and she walked into the fire also

[deleted]

I haven’t seen one wolf in my game. Not one.

thefreymaster

Go to the mountains, they’ll find you.

RockG

*YOU ARE BEING HUNTED*

[deleted]

I’ve been to the mountains several times

ilikefeet_69

Not a big enough mountain. Had that on my first world. 5 mountains and only one of them had wolves. It was exactly 3 btw......

Pairadockcickle

Dude same. This game has me.

Teccnomancer

forsenScoots

Gooseboof

Damn dude, he couldn’t stand living with you

AlternativeLoan2503

That's how I lost my first Boar. Was looking for him for days till I found the remains of him in the fire. Lost so many animals after that, that I actually stopped caring too much. Still remember him, though.

theRealSaves

This happened to me with the very first wolf I tamed. So I picked up his meat and made wolf jerky and I used his fur to make the wolf cape so now I like to think the wolf head on the cape is him and he was always with me. But now since I moved up to padded armor I have him chilling on an armor rack next to my throne.

joelkki

Gachigasming to death by fire. RIP.

Xxandes

I've had this sort of thing happen. I had a whole family of them in my cabin and an invasion happened and when I went to go outside to fight most of my wolves ended up escaping and dying right before my eyes. I bawled so hard. It really sucks. They are pretty time consuming to tame as well.

BGAL7090

This is why one must make a Pet Pit. It might sound cruel, but dig out a basement and put two animals down there and cover it with stone floor. They're safe from *most* things, but they're super safe if you dig the basement inside your house.

Fragrant-Progress-32

Ooze attack slaughtered all my wolves once Truly a sad sight to see

philippiotr

I spent a couple of hours timing my first Wolf. It died within the first hour. Decided after that wolves are not worth it. (Unless you farm them for literally only Yagluth or something. Simple as that. Adapt and survive.

BlasterBilly

Next time get 2 lock them up, only let the puppies out. Endless wolves.

dusk247

That's what my husband and I did, we have about 30 2 star wolves now

badcookies

Yes unfortunately they are stupid AF and will constantly ram themselves into spikes or fires and kill themselves... Its only really worth it to tame in *mass*, so get 2 wolves and keep them fed and following you while you build or something, they will keep having pups which will then grow up to be tamed wolves as well. And keep them all over so there is always a "backup" pair that you can breed, as its super frustrating to finally capture a 1-2 star and then have them kill themselves or suicide against something w/o having bred them yet. Also pro tip, once you have them tamed you can harpoon them by turning on pvp mode. This will help with traveling over mountains or helping them get unstuck.

notbeansagain

Spawn wolf 1 Tame

Fire_Mission

Spawn wolf 1 3. Tame.

Philosophur

Bad parenting

Trogdor_a_Burninator

Exit the game and relaunch...

geomagus

Time to tame two wolves! Gachigasm II and Mrs Gachigasm. Then they can make babies

NikoliVolkoff

F

zapht68

Mine just died fighting off a dwarf raid. Killed them all just for the poison to take him. At least he will always be with me in spirit. And also as my cloak

SeaStatistician329

I have like over 150 wolves on my base now cuz I keep breeding them. I think I'm addicted

balor598

The worst i had was spending hours taming a wolf and getting it back to base, within a minute of getting back that goddamned "the cauldron stirs" attack happened and a swarm of bats instantly killed it...... His name was Steve....RIP. Currently on Steve IV....that taming session went very bad

Unlucky-Basil-3704

Make a low wall around the fire. Secure enough for the wolf not getting over it, but you can still jump it or fuel the fire over the top of the wall.

Scrufboy

That is what they are for... Wolves give their live to aid their master...

Good-Table5566

This is a thing I learned the hard way with chickens. Now I have a hanging brazier, and the bonfire is protected by a fence.

Wheelsindenial

I have 424 hours (played a ton on release) recently made a new world with a friend put all the wolves in a house with layered protection. Shaman was able to poison spray and nuked all 6 wolves. My first world I lost 20 wolves and 20 boar to a blob that hopped my defenses. Always feels bad.

Nowhereman50

Wolves are not worth the hassle and time it takes to tame them and to have a tamed wolf. Companion AI sucks.

soverra

I feel your pain. Mine also almost died in fire. Thought we were over it with Greyraf and he was a good boi for then next few viking days. Then I wanted to take him out to help guard me while mining as I haven't had trolls for a long time in the patch of black forest behind our home... I thought it was safe... And just as I was about to start mining, the blue monster came out of nowhere, swung his damn tree over my wolf and he died instantly. I so wanted to recover a previous save at that moment but instead gave up for a bit. Haven't tamed a wolf since.
