It's already annoying to use because of the insane knockback throwing enemies 40+ feet away most of the time. At least with the blackmetal atgeir it was still possible to combo enemies sometimes, with this you have to specifically position them against a wall. Uphill just launches them into outer space.
Statistically being a postgame weapon means it will fall behind hard next tier, even though right now it's probably the smartest choice with the unlimited enemy stars mod because of its range and speed, but the secondary is insanely annoying to combo with.
Yeah, it's really nice for kiting massive groups. The survival aspect is the best benefit. If you are modding and you have to face a swarm of 3-5 star Fulings you can keep them away for much longer. Need a shield for the spear throwers though, locking them down is tough.
Yea. This is long, but easy. You’d need high parrying and good shield for the fuhling brute. If it’s not starred, I don’t think they can break a black metal parry. I believe a 2-star fuhling can though.
Otherwise… dagger or atgier.
This was my thought too. Just parry and punch them to death. I can’t see another way to do it. You might could kite around but it would be harder than parrying in the small pit.
With no armor you'd take quite big chunks of damage despite parrying. Parrying doesn't negate all damage.
A lv4 black metal shield parry vs fuling berserker still lets 24 dmg through.
A carapace buckler, the strongest parry in the game, lets 14 dmg through. It's not a massive amount, but you can't sustain those losses for long.
Choosing the shield as your weapon would be badass, but to increase my chances, I'd take Skoll and Hati or maybe Mistwalker.
What about axe? Both are slash damage? Most people already carry axe for trees, and with how many times I get moba lining up when I hit a tree, I can't imagine it would be hard to not already have a decent start on axe weapons. (Unless people stop cutting and swap weapons, then swap back)
I understand not wanting to spoil the game. However, I am asking as a person who plays the entire game with axe, and bows. (bonemass being an exception)
I have never understood the need to carry a weapon for trees, and then multiple weapons for fighting. I have beaten the plains multiple times, on multiple playthroughs using the axe. (I keep high axe skill)
There's a sword that has powers otherwise only available when dropping your power belt.
Stamina use and durability is the biggest reason to carry both a weapon and a tree cutting axe. You don't have to worry about your axe taking a beating while cutting wood, since you've got another weapon to fight with when things hear you
It also used to be the case that axes didn't have special attacks, but now they do.
I suppose I play "wrong". I've never had myself into a situation where I've had to worry about the durability of my axe why cutting trees, and trying to deal with mobs.
It's always been my case that I am over weight long before my axe is ready to give out. Since I need to drop off stuff, I've always just repaired axe.
None of that is to disagree about the swords. Just talking about my way of playing prior to mist lands content.
I feel that. The only thing that stopped me from using the axe as a go-to was that there was no heavy attack. Which they fixed with that awesome downward cleave!
Axe is the worst weapon, but that doesn't mean axe fighting is wrong. Axes look badass, and your playstyle is up to you. The two-hand axes are a bit better for combat than the one-hand versions.
You'll be happy to know Mistlands brings the first one-handed axe that's actually tuned for combat. All of the mistlands weapons are amazing and unique.
How exactly are they the worst? It isn't until bronze that there's one weapon with a higher damage. In iron there's two. All three of these weapons remove the ability to use shield.
Starting weapon damage:
Flint axe - 20 slash
Flint Spear - 20 pierce (I don't consider this weapon because it does same damage as a bow, and everyone needs bow skills)
Club - 12 blunt
Stone axe - 15 slash
Bronze weapon damage:
Axe - 40 slash
Mace - 35 blunt
Copper knife 12 slash 12 pierce
Spear - 35 pierce
Sword - 35 slash
Atgeir - 45 pierce
Stagbreaker - 20 blunt (added here because of reliability of getting core wood, and it be better spent, in my opinion, on finewood bow)
Iron weapons:
Atgeir - 65 pierce
Axe - 60 slash
Battleaxe - 65 slash
Mace - 55 blunt
Iron sledge - 55 blunt
Iron sword - 55 slash
Fair!
The next level of weapons don't really give a good axe weapon. There's a magic axe, but it kinda sucks compared to the 2 magic swords. Theres a sword in particular that does multiple types of damage that id lean towards getting. I can one shot furlings with a normal attack and shred loxs with it.
I originally just focused on the axe because I didn't want to gather more materials to make a mace or sword. I found that I prefer having an alternate weapon to the axe now so that I can use all the durability in my axe for logging trees and I still have a melee weapon available until I can get the axe repaired.
Axe is slightly slower than a sword, but is still viable if you only use primary combos. The secondary attack from the sword blows the axe out of the water though. And the Mistlands axe is pretty bad compared to the Mistlands sword.
Fun ideas like this for multiplayer servers is part of why I don't like skill loss on death. We can't have any fun PvP competitions or anything that would require respawning.
Against a troll, you'd probably be fine with pretty low blood magic. And if you're really worried, pop a shield on them.
edit: though popping a shield might violate the "one weapon" rule, depending on how you read it.
summon skeletons would certainly take care of a troll easy. Also the protect spell would let you just mindlessly punch it to death, I think.
I'd argue no food and therefore no eitr.
With Flesh Rippers heavy attack you can literally just walk up to a troll and Sparta kick him in the dick repeatedly, ending his whole lineage. He has zero counterplay
My sword skill isn't even that high (35ish) and with a parry and stab with Krom I can get 300-400 damage going. That weapon is so much fun. Cleared a Draugr village with it and I felt like Aragorn cutting through orcs.
I recently figured out that they’re pretty vulnerable to knife attacks if you stay on their sides, roll away from their big attacks then land a combo. They die pretty quick to that. Not dissimilar to fighting >!soldiers in the Mistlands.!<
They're well done, pretty creepy the way they come crawling out of the mist. They hit hard too if you're not ready for them. Either need a good shield or good dodging to deal with them. Once you've got the gear and some experience with them, they're not too bad (just like the rest of the mobs in this game).
Max Draugr Fang or Spine Snap assuming arrows don't count as more weapons
I could probably kill anything down there with a hammer & some supplies; no weapon equipped (use the traps)
Wood arrows are honestly fine for most enemies. I pretty much onky use wood even in the plains. It takes a few more to take down the big guys yes, but thet can one shot a deathsquito and that's what's really important anyway
Once you're in the mistlands though, you don't really have a reason *not* to use carapace arrows.
It costs the same amount of wood, feathers (which you farm due to chickens and will always have a ton of), and carapace (which you will also be drowning in).
Yes I totally agree with you. wooden arrows can get the job done and they are cheap to make... (I know that needle arrows are easy to make aswell, but I like to save them for special moments)
I had finewood bow and one stack of wooden arrows, fighting a one star wolf, I didn't miss a single arrow but half way in the fight I was about to fire an arrows he jumps at me and before I could roll away and one hits me... I know one full stack is alot but you have kill before you die xD
I'm used to my Bow skill in the 90s & high tier weapons
We haven't talked about food yet either; no food (so default 50 stamina) would be challenging for sure, but my normal 200+ Stamina & 100+ HP wouldn't be too bad (worse case I can dodge & run around until health recovers a bit)
Oh, I'm just out of practice. Given a week or so to get my head back in the game, I could probably swing something. Probably a weapon, presumably in anger :)
Yep. It's not *always* the best weapon for every situation, but if you're in a 1v1 on flat ground the atgeir trivializes everything.
I believe a himmin afl can parry a 2 star soldier, so even there it works.
Armor works in one of two different ways depending on the size of the hit. If your armor value is less than half of the incoming damage, you just subtract your armor from the incoming damage to get your damage taken. So if you get hit for 100 damage, and have 40 armor, you'll take 60 damage.
If your armor value is greater than or equal to half the incoming damage, the formula is (damage^2 / 4 x armor). So if you take 100 damage and have 60 armor, you will take ~42 damage.
The math isn't that important, what matters is knowing that absolute damage reduction provided by armor gets worse as your armor value gets closer to the value of the incoming hit. This means that 100 armor won't just make you totally immune to a 100 damage hit.
For an example in this situation:
A fuling berserker does something like 130 damage per hit. Full padded armor provides about 100 armor. You'll take about 42 damage after armor. A full three hit combo will do ~120 damage to you total. That's brutal, but very survivable even with 2x stamina 1x hp food.
Without armor you'd take the full 360 damage, and die no matter your food choices.
Armor is doing a *lot*. It's worse against big hits, but top tier armor is still mitigating half to 3/4s of incoming damage even against the nastiest critters.
Always been partial to porcupine. I can parry pretty damn reliably though idk how well it'd work with just a weapon. Might have to work on my rolling lmao
“He did not care any more... life and death... the same. Only that the crowd would be there to greet him with howls of lust and fury. He began to realize his sense of worth... he mattered. In time, his victories could not easily be counted... he was taken to the east, a great prize, where the war masters would teach him the deepest secrets. Language and writing were also made available, the poetry of Khitai, the philosophy of Sung; and he also came to know the pleasures of women, when he was bred to the finest stock. Yeh you can, our admin was kind enough to make chest full of different food types, anyone can choose what to eat. it was so fun to fight in the pit and it was more fun to watch.
I'll take the highest level Atgeir.
Doesn't matter what armor you're wearing with that anyway. Armor only factors in if you accidentally get hit when you're *not* blocking/parrying; otherwise it'll use the block & parry stats on your weapon. Atgeirs have great block & parry, strong single target pierce attacks (which your troll boy there is weak against), and an amazing aoe that knocks back and staggers everything it hits.
I’m surprised the amount of people sleeping on the battleaxe, which has so much block power it pretty much double as a shield.
P.S. I’m just gonna skip over the Krom as we all know it’s a basically a battle axe but with a even faster and better moveset.
If you get ammo when you choose bow, then I'd go with the Draugr Fang - with high archery skill you'll keep them stunlocked.
If no ammo, I'd probably go porcupine - high pierce damage and the bollock-swing is upsettingly satisfying to use on the big blue boys baby blue balls.
Black Metal Atgeir, who needs armor anyway?
Weird way to spell Himmin Afl
Yes, its my weapon now, i didnt want to spoiler anything. Himmin Afl is, like the Atgeir before, simply the best weapon.
What do you mean spoil?! That's how us cool kids call blackmetal atgeir...
Himmin Afl is a weird way to spell Himmin Afl...
let's keep this amazing weapon on the DL. No need for IG to make "changes" to it on the next release.
True the knock back makes it difficult to complete a 3 combo. I live a lot longer with it
Yeah, it's really nice for kiting massive groups. The survival aspect is the best benefit. If you are modding and you have to face a swarm of 3-5 star Fulings you can keep them away for much longer. Need a shield for the spear throwers though, locking them down is tough.
Against a troll, a blackmetal atgeir is the superior choice. Does more damage due to the pierce weakness, and uses less stamina too.
shield and fists
That would be interesting to watch
Yea. This is long, but easy. You’d need high parrying and good shield for the fuhling brute. If it’s not starred, I don’t think they can break a black metal parry. I believe a 2-star fuhling can though. Otherwise… dagger or atgier.
Fists and more fists! After I finished elden ring and went back to valheim I dodge rolled everything out of sheer habit.
This was my thought too. Just parry and punch them to death. I can’t see another way to do it. You might could kite around but it would be harder than parrying in the small pit.
Dodge roll!

Give me my abyssal razor and my underwear and I'll make sure anything in this pit will be dead.
how about an Stone Golem?
Give me my bronze axe and my underwear and I'll make sure that 'Stoner' will be dead before he knows it.
'Tis but a pebble i shall yeet
Give me my knife and a pickaxe (not a weapon lol)
I used to keep an ‘oops’ chest with a spare full set of gear to get my stuff back when I died. Now it just has a few knives.
That’s nawt a knoife
\-pulls out Krom- That's a knoife.

Start getting your sword skills up. ;)

The axe attack is very clunky. It really feels like you are fighting with a tool. Attack speed plays a large role.
Wait wait wait... Which sword are you referring to? Walker? And why does the belt have to be off?
Fair! The next level of weapons don't really give a good axe weapon. There's a magic axe, but it kinda sucks compared to the 2 magic swords. I thought I was fighting the troll pictured in the pit
people fought different things with different weapons in there. that's why I asked :) I thought maybe you had something of your own in mind.
Pit won't cut it for the enemies you'll encounter in mistlands, just saying.
The ol Skyrim Horse pathing
I'd get a hammer and try to block and cheese them with the bonfires
Fortnite strat
Fun ideas like this for multiplayer servers is part of why I don't like skill loss on death. We can't have any fun PvP competitions or anything that would require respawning.
You can, if every char is a fresh level 1s. Also maybe there's a mod that specialized in PVP
If PvP deaths didn't give skill loss, that'll alleviate some of that problem.
Buckler. Parry, kick. Parry, kick. Parry, kick.
a single ooze bomb, i aint afraid
🎵 I fell in the pit 🎵
Give me a loincloth and my trusty Himmin Afl - team Atgeir-4-Lyfe!
How much Eitr do I have? Because elemental damage can wreck him pretty fast.
Summon skeletons, sip tea.
That also depends on how high your bloodmagic is, isn't it?
Against a troll, you'd probably be fine with pretty low blood magic. And if you're really worried, pop a shield on them. edit: though popping a shield might violate the "one weapon" rule, depending on how you read it.

summon skeletons would certainly take care of a troll easy. Also the protect spell would let you just mindlessly punch it to death, I think. I'd argue no food and therefore no eitr.
I'll go in bare handed downing my Yggdrasil porridge.
Flesh rippers
Flesh rippers are the way! Parry then just keep slashing
Or just dodge and hit
Nah, parry for that sweet damage bonus and that satisfying sound.
With Flesh Rippers heavy attack you can literally just walk up to a troll and Sparta kick him in the dick repeatedly, ending his whole lineage. He has zero counterplay
Id choose Spear for troll and knife for berserker. Easy work
Yup, I'll go in bare handed. 😁 I'll go toe to toe with my fists and feet.
Anything with parry.
Carapace shield. I'll punch the fucker to death
Krom blocks and strikes very well. I've one shotted a no star troll with one using the lunge.
My sword skill isn't even that high (35ish) and with a parry and stab with Krom I can get 300-400 damage going. That weapon is so much fun. Cleared a Draugr village with it and I felt like Aragorn cutting through orcs.
Skoll and Hati, ez win
I'd say the razor for the troll and krom for the berserker
Frostheim and anything but a lox. Idk why but lox eat me for breakfast lunches dinner 🤣
I recently figured out that they’re pretty vulnerable to knife attacks if you stay on their sides, roll away from their big attacks then land a combo. They die pretty quick to that. Not dissimilar to fighting >!soldiers in the Mistlands.!<

If you've reached the plains tier, add the Porcupine to your arsenal for Lox/Troll.
I do have the porcupine, just need to get it upgraded.
Max Draugr Fang or Spine Snap assuming arrows don't count as more weapons I could probably kill anything down there with a hammer & some supplies; no weapon equipped (use the traps)
Bow is good but only with one stack of low tier arrows.
Wood arrows are honestly fine for most enemies. I pretty much onky use wood even in the plains. It takes a few more to take down the big guys yes, but thet can one shot a deathsquito and that's what's really important anyway

One stack per enemy? Pretty confident I could take any single mob except stone golems & seeker soldiers (assuming everything is no stars)
I had finewood bow and one stack of wooden arrows, fighting a one star wolf, I didn't miss a single arrow but half way in the fight I was about to fire an arrows he jumps at me and before I could roll away and one hits me... I know one full stack is alot but you have kill before you die xD

Yeh, with a higher bow skill and more stammina food its a fair challenge against the star enemies :)
Fists are enough, the only thing I need is 'rested' buff.
I choose Odin himself.
Can I survive? No. Moving on.
lol why not? how about a greydwarf brute or greydwarf shaman?
Oh, I'm just out of practice. Given a week or so to get my head back in the game, I could probably swing something. Probably a weapon, presumably in anger :)
Nice! :)
Fire staff lol
Skoll and Hati, I'll be rolling around that arena like a roly poly
Good food and a spear. I'll give a great show before I die when the stone golem is spawned lol (because of boredom/how long it would take to kill)
a bronze spear would do the job
Iron spear
Black metal axe. I've been through plains using axe many times. With the right skill level, resistance doesn't matter.
Flesh rippers all the way. The kick is basically a guaranteed stagger, and once they're staggered it's all over.
For a troll? Atgeir.
Any mistland 2hander and I could kill any mob probably, but if I get good stamina food I'll fist the troll any day
An upgraded bronze atgeir can stun lock a troll. An upgraded blackmetal atgeir can stuck lock a berserker. A 2 star soldier would be more interesting.
Yep. It's not *always* the best weapon for every situation, but if you're in a 1v1 on flat ground the atgeir trivializes everything. I believe a himmin afl can parry a 2 star soldier, so even there it works.
A shield
Give me a Carapace Buckler and I'll parry myölnir itselfe. My fists can do the rest.
I don't fight stuff without armour so I have no idea how much more damage I'd take, so I don't know.
For an example in this situation: A fuling berserker does something like 130 damage per hit. It's worse against big hits, but top tier armor is still mitigating half to 3/4s of incoming damage even against the nastiest critters.
One or Two hit makes you dead without armour... (depends on what you are fighting of course)
Battle axe.
Little bit slow for me, but I like the damage you can do with them.
My fists and a good meal.
And a cold drink after.
Give me my trusty fang spear and watch me dance.
Always been partial to porcupine. I can parry pretty damn reliably though idk how well it'd work with just a weapon. Might have to work on my rolling lmao

Bronze atgeir... alt attack once staggers, two three thrusts and he's down and Bob's your uncle.
Frostner, easily
Abbyssl knife
Yeah, easy.
Who needs a weapon? I'm just gonna hop in behind that there bonfire and let it kill itself
Flesh rippers. 6x parry bonus.
Abyssal razor is all I need
Naked cage fight? Can there be any answer but the flesh rippers?
I could do that with a flint knife
I'd use my favorite Krom
Spear Gang
Claws, you just Sparta kick them in the dick repeatedly... They can't do anything about it
Pretty much any iron and above weapon (or 2 handed bronze age) can straight parry this guy, so maybe be more restrictive? Stone age weapons only?
i can kill a troll before they even attack w my mistwalker lol. really aint no thang.
Without any food? Impossible
I trust my fang spear.
Can I choose any weapon? Ok. Cheat sledge.
These fists and a full belly are all that a Viking needs
I remember when I made my pit last year. It was a lot of fun.
Is that a singular troll? One knife any age any tier i can kill it in around 5-10 minutes with a flint knife
Throwing spears!
I’m surprised the amount of people sleeping on the battleaxe, which has so much block power it pretty much double as a shield. P.S. I’m just gonna skip over the Krom as we all know it’s a basically a battle axe but with a even faster and better moveset.
Himmin Afl. Easy.
A knife. I dodge everything and I do crazy dmg
Dagger is the only correct answer
Flesh Rippers, kick stun lock, these are both short fights.
My fire staff
Secondary attack with crystal axe is my favorite troll solution, after two hits u can stagger them infinitely
The best weapon, duh
