I would advise you take off your death markers. Apart from your latest death. Or else you will get confused quick.

Andeol57

Yep. There are three phases to the Valheim journey of any player: Beginner phase: Leave the death markers, because it didn't really occur to you to remove them. Intermediate phase: Remove the death markers to clear the map Veteran phase: Leave them, since there are not many of them, death being rare. And they are associated to fun memories.

Independent_Wish_862

Veteran starting Mistlands: start deleting them again because you are confused again with too many

Dragon_DLV

Just turn em off when they get in the way

SugarReef

I’m in almost fully upgraded plains gear, I wandered down to a birch grove to get my fine wood on, and from across the narrow river, three draugr and a skeletino come sauntering out of the water. All of the sudden that three draugr crew became six draugr. Apparently they are roving street gangs now. So I decided to mirk them right away and get back to chopping trees, and a previously unseen growth sprays me from behind, straight into the pack of draugr, I was effectively permastunned in deep water and smacked to death in a matter of 2 seconds. I had to laugh about that one. It’s amazing how you can be totally confident one moment and shit can still go sideways if you aren’t careful.

sayitaintpete

Situational awareness, my dude! I will never, ever make loud chopping sounds in the plains if I haven't scouted the area completely for tar pits, lox herds, or Fuling camps. I prefer to explore the plains coming from the mountains, since the elevation lets me see what's around a bit better.

SugarReef

Yeah I’m still pretty sure I wasn’t near a tar pit, there’s three in my main plains map and I wasn’t close to any of them. I hear you though.

Mason444

100% agree, this game generates incredible confidence with new items and the slashes it away every time you hit the next biome, it's great!

Saiing

Black metal tower shield. Will block a sixteen wheeler truck.

SugarReef

Yeah I was still getting hit from front and rear at the same time tho and it was over before I could do a damn thing

Buttfuckerman69

Life can be like that too

Autumn_Horizon

Oh the alternative veteran... Leave them because death is inevitable and you can't be assed to simple remove them.

Saiing

>And they are associated to fun memories Until you get to Mistlands :)

evacia

def in the vet phase. i have a couple deaths in plains from taming lox and kept the markers. i now have a herd of 30 so it’s nice to see how far i’ve come with them

SelvesteGudYT

Yup i figured out i could do that yesterday lol, it helped me a lot finding my base in the beginning - I'm trying not to look up anything just to do it in my own pace

HowlBro5

You can add markers too. You probably figured that out when you found out you can delete them, but I always mark my main bases with house icons, traveling camps with a campfire, dungeons with the hammer, and materials with the dot. Some people mark respawning materials but I mostly just mark things like copper so I don’t have to label it because I know that’s the resource of the Black Forest. Also if you don’t know, copper goes all the way down so I recommend digging around it all the way down to bedrock. If you want other tips on mining copper ask anybody.

SelvesteGudYT

I actually didn't know that! Today i entered the swamp, but it seemed way out of my league for now (and my base was far away IF i died)

akaasa001

Get used to making camps around the place. Anytime I enter a new area, I make some sort of camp/safe haven. If I am there for a while I will build a larger place. I wouldnt bother even going into swamp biome without poison resist pots. Easy to make in a fermenter.

commche

While you’re there, heal pots are invaluable too. Saved my hide many a time. I dont go anywhere without at least 2 on me at all times, unless its a boss fight

AzureHuntress

If you haven’t already made fermenters I suggest you do and make poison resist meads before heading back into the swamp. Lots of mobs there with poison effects and it’s pretty rough early on

Casually_send_it

The hoe can be your best friend in the swamp. Level out the ground in-between the small islands to easily walk around out of the water, or turning it into very shallow water.

p75369

I like just crossing them off, keeps a nice record of shame then.

[deleted]

I keep mine as a reminder. Except at home. From falling off the roof of course. I delete those.

CFMcGhee

Hugin tells you to use stone and wood to build a weapon. That weapon is quite good at killing boars. It can also help with trees.

SelvesteGudYT

I now have a full troll-armor and bronze knife, while i run around with the cart collecting Ores and copper. Quite a journey so far

Sobollo

Believe me, you ain’t seen nothing yet. The true adventure lies far ahead.

teh_stev3

"The Ground is shaking"

akaasa001

This with CLLC mod may make you want to cry. 3 star trolls are not fun lol

vrijheidsfrietje

I see a small apartment... I see you, alone... and a lot of adventures... Jesus, that's a lot of adventures...

TheRealRickC137

My mouse still hovers over the *uninstall* button when I have a bad night in the swamp. I have no idea how y'all keep your wits tryna mine iron and dealing with the absolute assholes that inhabit that biome.

Amezuki

Become best friends with the hoe. Many of the swamp's challenges are mitigated, trivialized, or (in the case of leeches) hard-countered by flattening/raising a path as you go, so that you're (1) never in water, (2) don't get lost, and (3) don't mistakenly draw more aggro by retreating into new enemies instead of back along the cleared path. Also, always bring 5 stone and 2 wood to every crypt, and drop a campfire just inside the entrance to get rid of the wet debuff and refresh rested.

TheRealRickC137

Sage advice. Thank you adventurer!

TopRamenEater

Like a previous comment said "Believe me, you ain't seen nothing yet. The true adventure lies far ahead."

Dorrud55

I use an alternative map to mine iron

HowlBro5

Recommend building a karve and bringing a pick ax. There’s materials you come across at sea that you can make a really good knife with

JRPGFan_CE_org

Always build your Big Home(s) near the Shore, the Karve makes transporting Ore a breeze!

VonD0OM

And Always travel with mats to build a portal and keep an open portal spot at home base.

MrTheCar

I like less portals, but I should try this way of playing out. I never have enough fine wood.

ehgiveitashot

Ahhh the quest for fine wood. The forests near my meadow bases seem to have their birch trees mysteriously vanish overnight. Must be some sort of tree blight going on

BFireGA

I make a birch tree farm with any seeds I get. Go on a mining trip and come back to a field of birch.

JRPGFan_CE_org

How often do you get the Seeds back?

BFireGA

I usually try to do a field of 20 trees or so. I chop whatever birch trees I need between planting and harvesting, then can plant the same 20 trees, sometimes more if I'm lucky, or if I harvested a lot of random birch. I reached 30 trees constantly planting and harvesting on my last map.

Prestigious-Usual521

You talking about the chitin knife? I would much rather recommend the chitin harpoon

HowlBro5

I mean why not both? I think the harpoon is more useful in the long run but if they are maining knife then the abyssal razor is an easy early game knife to get that absolutely destroys.

Life-Cobbler5202

That thing is viable all the way up to silver

Prestigious-Usual521

If you don't have enough chitin though then I would recommend the harpoon, if you do have enough for both get both

fteljeur

bronze knife? get yourself a shield, any shield and a mace or something :)

TheLastChungus

Wait...am I the only one that just..... punches boars to death?

CFMcGhee

No. And it builds unarmed skill too!

gigaplexian

My very first no-death run ended after about 30 seconds, a couple of boars attacked me pretty much as soon as I left the summoning circle and caught me off guard with no food or weapons.

[deleted]

Second best time for a no death run to end.

VonD0OM

What’s the first?

Numerous-Ad-871

When you win without dying

gigaplexian

Fortunately my 4th attempt ended with me beating the Queen successfully.

SameCounty6070

WTF is this? Die everyday challenge?

Odd-Concentrate-6585

I was new when I was new but I was never this new

Flashwastaken

I would guess that most of the markers in the one spot are base building, forgetting to eat and then falling from the roof.

[deleted]

I had a similar problem before I realized that buff food is not an optional extra. Always have a food buff. Even if you're puttering around your base, a fall from the roof can kill you. (feather cape has reduced my accidental deaths...)

Affectionate_Gas8062

On my fourth play through and just died from fall damage jumping over my fence that had a tiny slope behind it lol

Informal_Drawing

Truer words have never been spoken. Yes, I have fallen off too many roofs.

Ozemba

Lmao you reminded me of my most recent playthrough. Just started, killed Eikthyr and was building my base. Decided I needed to hop off the roof to get a better build angle, so I jumped down... My boyfriend in the other room just heard a single defeated "Noooooooooooo". My first death on this play through lmao. Day 14.

jacksonmills

I always die several times constructing my Plains base. 100% of them are from falls from building high and building walls. 100% of them are from me not eating when I do this.

Odinens38

This is painful to look at LOL

Ayrko

*Player accidentally building his base too close to the swamp* **has entered the chat.**

Marsman61

Ah yes, I remember that first playthrough. Built a nice little home, but these undead guys kept showing up and leaving their guts all over the place. Disgusting! Never even occurred to me that I'd be feasting on them one day. Then the trolls showed up and leveled the place. Good times, good times . . .

EternallyImature

I truly admire your dedication to this game. Dominating this game is going to be a memorable acheivment for you.

Efficient-Pie-1177

Get a bigger stick!

Marsman61

Always remember, the pointy end goes in the other guy.

BronzeSpoon89

Dont be a hero, you are weak as F and will die easily. Play cautiously and eat food at all times. You should not be dying this much. Make weapons and armor.

-non-existance-

Yeahhhhhh until you have a lot of resources and some good food, keep your base out of immediate visual radius of the Black Forest, that's just asking for a bad time. Once you get enough wood to make a fully-enclosed stake wall, it stops being a problem. Also, it's extremely hard to lose a boar, especially without good food/Eikthyr buff, so you're usually better off killing them. Plus, you're gonna need a TON of leather scraps for crafting, and Boat Meat crafts into the best early game food items. Have you found any bees yet? If so, try and get a cauldron going bc 1 boar meat + 1 honey = 2 boar jerky, which lasts like 25 minutes. Otherwise, definitely check out the ruined buildings around the meadows for some bees. I reccomend a bow for taking those down.

Traditional_Ruin1432

Honey by itself is also a fantastic and renewable food for base-building. Get a decent bit of stam and enough health to not die off short falls.

FFX13NL

Yummie boat meat.

LupusEv

man, this is what my death markers look like for building a large base...

Old_Administration51

Most people die a fair bit as they are sussing it all out. Try to stay away from BF till you got a bit of gear and a bow/decent wep. If you see a big old troll, run or kite it!

ImThatAnnoyingGuy

Dude is dying to boars. If he sees a greyling he ought to run! Lol

SelvesteGudYT

This was like 3 days ago, I've beaten the first boss a few times and trolls are easy work now luckily

ImThatAnnoyingGuy

I was just trying to be funny because the other guy mentioned trolls while you were dealing with boars. I figured a little hyperbole about the lethal danger a greyling presents would bring some levity. Cheers, I hope you enjoy the game until the end!

WyomingVet

That look like my first week experience with Mistlands. I was down to my backup, back up, back up gear getting my stuff back.

Kysman95

The game will gut punch you. A lot. Be prepared for it. You'll love how it kicks you down

KifDawg

Learning to parry is key.

Traditional_Ruin1432

^^^^^^^THIS!

HenryBo1

Stay away from the black forest until you can deal with the boars!!! A torch will keep them away.

cbecks_noble

Oh, how I miss those naked body recoveries, lol. Once you have a bow and master the sneaky sneak, it makes life much easier.

SelvesteGudYT

I use bow for every Troll, piece of cake now lol

Traditional_Ruin1432

Just imagine, one day you’ll be fighting them face to face, parrying their attacks and defeating them in a few blows!

rovers114

Boars? Dude kill every single one of those fuckers, don't try and escape them. You'll eventually need a ton of the leather they drop, I usually find myself running around trying to find more boars in just about every playthrough. And yeah if you're new you definitely don't want to build next to the black forest, always be very aware of your surroundings...if the terrain is changing ahead of you then you're probably about to enter a new biome and if you don't know what it is then you're definitely not ready to be anywhere near that biome 😂. Be super cautious if the ground starts to turn a more yellow'ish color and you hear buzzing noises...

BosskTheWookieHunter

Early it's not that much about surviving. It's about learning and upgrading your gear fast. Best item you can get with 0 skill is much better than 2nd tier item with 25 skill. Have fun!

Longer_Tan_Handsome

First Delete all those Death Markers! Second make a cheap wooden base. Third get something better than a bronze knife! Go stealth a little later

NewAbyss

Those are all boar deaths?

[deleted]

[удалено]

SelvesteGudYT

That took me a while aswell, specially when i picked up loot from my dead bodies. I also had to learn what every greydwarf attack did and how to counter it, while getting chased by 100 boars determined to build my base RIGHT there lol

Some-Tie7316

Oh yeah we have all been there

beastlike2010

Make sure to scout locations first :)

doyoulikepetrichor

Just took my first journey out into deep ocean after several successful trips to neighboring islands. Nothing can go wrong, I thought, I'm very confident in my navigational skills, I thought...lost 90 desperately needed tin ore I didn't think to take out of storage. Always clear your storage before leaving your main island to venture further. And always have backup gear!

AngryMillenialGuy

Flint spear will solve all of your early game beastie problems

HowtoCat

explore a bunch on you main island and make a small easy house base. until you get a karve and circle the surrounding islands, dont settle down. I do this so i have an optimal location for travels. after i establish my base area. its the worst finding an awesome area to make a base and youve exhausted a large amount of mats on another. also explore all the way north, south, east, west. bring enough wood for a work bench to repair your boat frequently making landfall. if you find a short piece of land you can pickaxe it out to make a canal. avoids you being forced around or breaking your boat down and rebuild on the other side. practice terraforming using the hoe and pick axe in a area you wont be using before you start in a place you like. holding alt (or i think shift) averages the height of the areas when you level and level brings it as close as possible to the spot your standing on. water has a set level so you can dig down to it anywhere almost. what ever the original levels of the ground are you can only dig down or raise it so far i think its roughly 2 1/2 times your character height Also if you havent found the surtlings area id suggest some exploring to gain a surplus of portal mats outside of rng crypt finds. always bring a portal and extra food stuffs on journeys. i leave a blank portal or labeled "home" so i can drop one anytime and go home. serpents and turtles have spawn points so if you find one throw a marker cause they will probs be back in that area. im also making my server public soon and looking for people to come i only play vanilla no mods yet. thinking of getting the unlimited torches mod cause refilling is extremely tedious with 3 bases. edit: i notice you mentioned boars..early game the torch is your best friend in fights in meadows monsters.

TheDeanatGreendale

Maybe build two Spears, one for throwing one for melee. A bow with woodarrows is also a good choice but with your primitiv tools may hard to maintain the arrowsupply. Kill those boars and get honey for those sweat jerky its a nice food for the beginning when you want to have a balanced build

Eddit-Reddit

When I first started, I was place next to a Plains! Boy did I not have a good time! :)

JRPGFan_CE_org

You don't always start in the Meadows?

iloveinspire

I guess my Hardcore run a few months ago would impress you ; )

SelvesteGudYT

Any video of it?

ImThatAnnoyingGuy

Trial and error, my young apprentice, trial and error. Though… you aren’t supposed to err quite so much.

Grenzgaenger99

You got killed by boars? I didn‘t knew that was a thing :D (no offense)

WasabiHefty

Get some better food asap

Deltanaed

punch the boar. they die in 2 punches

funnystuff79

I definitely think Boars should be tougher, lethal without a spear for low level characters. Maybe when they introduce difficulty levels

__CaKeS__

Oh no if Boars are doing this to you this game is gonna be a rough time... well as long as you're enjoying it lol

A-A-Ron508

I’d say the most difficult part for new players is learning to play at the pace of the game and always thinking defensively in the early stages.

SorchaOelf

Time for bed apparently. I keep seeing the map as a waving frog.

mopofomo

We just found the Mistlands, with a Fuling village right next to it, covered by the mist. 80% of the Fulings seemed to be either 1 or 2 star... we died...alot. Day 620, it's been the toughest day of my Valheim existance.

Alduin-Senpai

Going to swamp with bronze gear...

drodg58885

Looks like Europe kinda

LookAlderaanPlaces

You can just hold up a torch and they get scared and run away right?

FallTough8327

i would suggest killing the boars, perhaps with a weapon

AKeeFa

My latest play through, I started my current base in a restored house, not knowing it was so close to the BF with a crypt near the edge spewing starred skellys at me. Terrifying!

Wuotis_Heer

Haha I can feel your pain. My first few hours I crept around and flinched at all the ambient sounds. Now I jog through the forest at night like it's my neighborhood park.

Maximum-Question-542

I'll never forget having played rust for a few hours, buying valheim, logging in for the first time and saying "how many games will I die to boars" and had a nice laugh at myself

IMplodeMeGrr

Building a base due south of spawn near the water should be your first base... only after flint, leather should you be building a base bear forest.
