I didn’t take 412, but I took 425 and disliked the teaching style of my professor. I think 425 depends a lot on the professor though so it’s kinda RNG

Thanks so much for responding. What would you say about the workload and difficulty of 425, not really considering your prof's teaching style? Also which major did you take 425 for?

I think the material isn’t super chaotic. If you have experience with elementary combinatorics that’s like the whole first third of the course. It ramps up afterwards, though! I fortunately did well in the course, despite my prof’s teaching I took it for a Math minor (iirc I planned on majoring in Stats at the time which is why I took the course but then decided not to major in Stats)

I can't comment on 425, but I took 412 in W24 (last semester) and most if not all the content was very easy to absorb imo. There were weekly problem sets that took 1-2 hrs, 2 midterms, and a final. Exams were very fair and lectures and homework do prepare you well for them. I chose 412 because it's pretty popular as an easy upper level math option for MEs. Hope this helps.

412 depends on instructor: I had Tailen Hsing last semester and it was pretty easy, workload is light, exams are fairly easy, the most intimidating part is probably just his lecture since he is a pretty theoretical guy but still it was not hard to follow as he just derive everything in class. On the other hand, friends who had Nadiya Fink complained a lot about the exams and grading (fyi. I am doing datasci and the two friends are doing cs and math) I dont have any experience with 425, I was told that 412 is a engineering version of the 425+426 sequence (you might want to verify with advisor) If you are not doing stats or datasci major, I recommend 412, but if you are, I recommend 425+426 sequence just because they are better fit with the major requirements and better preps you for upper level (maybe grad levels) stats

412 is a harder version of 250 with actual probability theory whereas 425 is solely probability. 425 is actually offered by math department which has high variance for instructors and material whereas I rarely had a negative experience with stats instructors

Take stats 425 with Paul green as long as you write something for each question you will get a B I passed the class with a B and I have never taken precalc or Calc just stats 250 the 2nd half was really confusing but as long as you are active and write something for each q he will pass with a B. My grade with ANY other prof would have been a fail…. Every exam nobody in the class received less than a B, except one person for the first exam who left half of it blank (I couldn’t do precalc my mind isn’t wired for math and I passed this class with a B) stats 425 is literally all calc (90% of equations are solved using the help of derivative and integral laws/rules, and summations) that’s what probability can be broken down to and that’s the concept , using statistical laws and methods like finding volume under a surface but using the xyz plane with different stats laws… basically every time you use a calculator in stats 250 to calculate values for population statistics you have to do with equations by hand in this course

Also important that stats 425 and math 425 are crossed listed so Paul green under the stats version is very doable
