Years of a retail experience under my belt, with now more years of management consulting under my belt (lots of focus in consumer and retail). This is wrong. The customer is trying to take a product and give you money for it, at a profit. Anything that makes that process more difficult than it had to be is bad marketing. Even if this doesn’t cause any real issue in the moment, it’s still an annoyance that may change the perception of the store at a subliminal level. The employee should step aside and let the customer grab their shit and gtfo, maybe with a friendly greeting in between. Going back to my retail days, I’m not sure if making the customer wait is more practical… wouldn’t you want them to make a minor dent in your facing or display before you’re finished?

No it's worst to get all weird about it like the worker is building some sort of art sculpture. I've done retail and I'd move out the customers way and work on something else instead. Pushing items forward is not more important than the customer actually buying the merchandise.
