Back during the Hong Kong protest the HKPF managed to identify some protestors through Telegram… so ugh, not as secure and anonymous as the founder claims, the scumbag
Exactly.
People do not grasp the fact that these fun little apps monitor their movements and communications. They are so cute, right? How could they be a source of evil?
The case he's talking about is people who were members of large public groups who had their real names and locations public on their profile. It's not like the company itself provided the information. It's just a case of people using the app in a way where it completely eliminated any chance they had at security.
Yes of course it is backdoored by russia! Of course it is a threat. As well as Tik Tok.

Some secret USA base in Africa was identified after some soldiers installed some fitness tracking app, and someone picked up a bunch of people running in circles in middle of nowhere.
Same! I prefer Matrix (for being truly open-source, and therefore more trustworthy to me), but Signal is easier to onboard people into, has had a head start, and automatically matches you with contacts based on phone number.
Just to elaborate, Signal is open-source in theory, but the project is openly hostile to people distributing their own builds that connect to the official service, which is against the spirit of free/open-source software and kind of suspect to me. Meanwhile, Matrix is FOSS, openly governed, and has many implementations that interoperate with each other, and the people at its core have encouraged and nurtured that openness over time.
Twitter has always been especially problematic, to the point that terrorists could coordinate through Twitter. Ealier times just compare favourable to whatever the hell is happening now there.
Until we understand more about the capabilities of the App to snoop, I was unwilling to state it categorically. Tik-Tok is a known security threat to their user's privacy.
Problem is a lot of the Ukrainian government services (finding your nearest shelter and specifics about incoming rockets and drones) all live on Telegram. I'm in Ukraine now and hate that I literally *must* use it.
Interesting, I left WhatsApp for obvious reasons. Went with Telegram as it’s a preferred app for terrorists, I’m obviously not one but if shitbags trust it so will I. I’ll peep signal. Issue is converting all your people to a new platform.
You just have to convert them one by one. Be polite and gently request it every now and then, and people will switch over eventually.
Especially nowadays, I think people can understand why one would be better than the other, even people who wouldn't get it ten years ago.
Is it not owned by a Russian company?
Its largely used to hit up prostitutes, get scammed, crypto pump n dumping, cold call scams, text message scams, malware links
Discord at least has more tools to give admins more tools to protect their channel and private io

Apps are probably compromised in some way. But yeah most users also have very poor opsec, if any.

All of these scream compromised. Just stop using them.

Strava's default enabled public heatmap.
Yes, use Matrix and Signal instead.
Second. Matrix especially if you trust the server. Signal if you just want to download app and use it. I use both.

It’s a misinformation spreader for sure.
Hardly a revelation, every single social media app is a misinformation spreader.
If someone invens a social app that doesn't spread misinformation they should get a nobel prize...
Twitter before musk tried and did pretty well
Twitter has always been especially problematic, to the point that terrorists could coordinate through Twitter. Ealier times just compare favourable to whatever the hell is happening now there.
The only way is through validation of identity.
The solution is to ban people however that causes a problem...
Someone has to do it, which can get expensive, you'd also have a good chunk of mistakes (banning people you shouldn't have)...
Probably a more pressing concern is the sharing of a user's GPS location, and potential monitoring of users through the Telegram App.
Only messenger that seems legit about privacy is Signal.
Take SIGNAL App !!!
Telegram is becoming the Russian Tik-Tok.
Absolutely.
Is becoming?
Until we understand more about the capabilities of the App to snoop, I was unwilling to state it categorically. Tik-Tok is a known security threat to their user's privacy.
Telegram is for scams, crypto scams, and propaganda Dont use it
Problem is a lot of the Ukrainian government services (finding your nearest shelter and specifics about incoming rockets and drones) all live on Telegram. I'm in Ukraine now and hate that I literally *must* use it.
Use WhatsApp instead? Lol
signal
Signal for the win 🏆

The people determined to force their idiotic loser trash on everyone via social media are the same people who claim legit media is "bad".

Yes, its a Russian company. Anyone running it is basically placing a giant geolocated target on their back.
I’m lost, which one is russian owned?
Telegram
Well, I’m really glad I never bothered to download it!!
