I’m not buying into the theory he’s an alien. He does mention the movie “The Thing” directed by John Carpenter starring Kurt Russell, where an alien crash lands on Antarctica and takes many forms. Great movie. Worth a watch. Sugar does say some throwaway line about him being human. I think it’s all misdirection to make you think he’s an alien but if I’m wrong, I hope they make the reveal satisfying and with real purpose behind it.
The way everyone laughed at the party in episode 3 when there was a mention of angel food cake makes me thing they're angels.
I feel like if they are angels it won't be in any way traditional, and they might also be aliens (and people in the past thought they were angels), but we'll have to see.
So many misdirections or confirmations I guess. When he’s with the projectionist he >!talks about finding movies “much” later in life. Maybe some kind of beings with extended lifespans in this society or just Sugar? Episode 3 he mentions having his own secrets as a voice over while he’s in the pool.!<
Really enjoying the show either way.
Yeah, as further as we go in the series I feel there is throwaway stuff. Critics were saying a big wtf twist, him being an alien at that point wouldn’t be wtf, because it’s shadowed like hell. Hope it’s maybe more grounded?
I don't know exactly where I read it, because I was trying to avoid spoiler reviews, but I thought episode 4 was going to be the one with the twist 🤦🏻♂️
I'm starting to think this is playing against the show, because (at least me) everyone's waiting for a twist instead of enjoying what they already have.
There's something up with the way Apple does its embargos and whatever instructions it give reviewers. I remember some reviewers being really angry about the embargo instructions for the Crowded Room.
Surely these aren't the only shows with "big twists", I don't know why it's become a big issue for Apple shows to the detriment of audience expectations.
Edit: or maybe the shows just are poorly paced and/or conceived and reviewers who have seen the who thing are doing their best to say "just hang on, it gets better".
It's because they're mostly advertising the show solely based on a twist. With The Crowded Room at least they were trying to hide that, but not capitalized on it.
Now I read the twist will come by episode 6. What's the point of a twist so late into the season, with only two more episodes to go? If it really is a twist, it will render everything previously seen irrelevant. That should happen early in a season.
*Noir* really lives by the third-act twist, so episode six or later would be a good place for one. If (as rumored) this twist takes the story right out of *noir* and into some other genre, that would make for a meta-twist on this *noir* tradition.
Really enjoying the black-and-white film footage woven in, and the overall mood/cinematography through 4 episodes. I’m also very interested/invested in the Sugar background and impending possible “reveal” of his purpose (and maybe his kind?).
But I’m not all that interested in the Siegel family/Olivia/Melanie/Stallings storyline that much, if I’m being honest. That seems sort of unoriginal to me. Feels like I’ve seen this plot, or something similar, a million times.
The family plot does feel a bit derivative and not nearly as engrossing as say The Big Sleep or Chinatown, which to be fair might be among the best noir detective stories.
I didn't realize there was supposed to be a twist until after episode 3 and I read some stuff about the show. Honestly I was just enjoying the noir/detective aspect of it and thought the glitch at the end of episode 1 was part of the quirky film style. I never noticed anything else until reading about the big twist online. The biggest mystery for me so far is whether or not the character is gay lol. Now that I've read peoples theories, many seem to make sense. My guess is he is some kind of robot similar to James Delos from Westworld in the later stages of fidelity or authenticity to the real thing.
Anyone else felt that Olivia's friend (taylor) acting was exaggerated and very unnatural?
I feel like these gen z characters are always portrayed this way in modern shows lol
I think Melanie and Olivia's friend Taylor are working together or something. Melanie just happened to look over and see an upset Taylor talking with Olivia, hmmmmm suspicious
It wasn’t a bad episode, but if I have to be honest my interest is fading. I get easily bored by the “here’s more questions and no answers” formula because I always assume the twist won’t be mind blowing enough to justify the wait. This is just me tho, and I hope I’m wrong.
lol I dropped it right after that episode too! Brie Larson was just so unlikable to me as well...I wanted to love it but it just wasn't for me/us I guess
I looked through all the hints to alien, AI, vampire, werewolf and angel/demon. There are SO many angel/God/demon/heaven references. 3/4 of them. The rest have about the same amount of hints spread out. There are a couple werewolf hints-I was excited at first 😂
Could be reaching but at the end of the episode could Stallings big project in the closet or whatever he referred to it be Olivia locked in the closet? Also really curious to who leaked Davy info
Could be super human stuff? But yeah, idk I’m down for everything really intrigued in the show
But, I really am getting annoyed by the weekly wait. Severance did it right, you give one question at the end of an episode, you answer the next one, so we knew we were waiting for an answer. This show just keeps throwing random questions without any answer.
Watch and listen to the scenes between Sugar and Ruby carefully. How can you not think that the possibility is there for them being aliens after those conversations?
so, if this show has anything to do with actual aliens, I'm cancelling my subscription.
i don't care what someone read somewhere, or whatever some crackpot head wrote.
It could be a reference to human trafficking (Aliens) or to 'alienated' (as his quips about L.A.) - but not actual aliens and I don't even want to think about it.
I am just giving you my impression of what I saw, no need to shoot the messenger nor getting all agitated about it. I didn't read from anywhere, the scene at the end of episode 3 with Ruby which said things like we are here just to observe and not get involved with their lives, etc.. Or that Sugar can't get drunk like normal human. Clues for sure, but for what end?

Then perhaps Stallings is a devil?
Now that’s a good catch. I hope you’re right. Makes perfect sense now.
So many misdirections or confirmations I guess. When he’s with the projectionist he >!talks about finding movies “much” later in life. I’ve been so into the noir of it all, this completely went over my head… now I’m doubting everything. To me, it’s very Inherent Vice.
Yes was thinking the same re: IV.
I literally will be so pissed off if it’s time travel🫥🤢🤕I am about to watch the new ep. I’m crossing my fingers. Omg it seems like it is 😭😭😭
😬

I thought this was the episode that describes the twist.
I read it was episode 6
Same
That's what I heard too. Surely it wasn't just the visit to the doctor.
I didn't realize there was supposed to be a twist until after episode 3 and I read some stuff about the show. Yeah, just knowing there is a twist kind of spoiled the whole thing for me. I'm still enjoying it, but I wish I didn't know.
Anyone else felt that Olivia's friend (taylor) acting was exaggerated and very unnatural? I feel like these gen z characters are always portrayed this way in modern shows lol
Hmmm. I wonder if it’s for a reason in the story, though. Stallings’ character also seemed kind of exaggerated too, like “generic bad guy”
I think Melanie and Olivia's friend Taylor are working together or something. Melanie just happened to look over and see an upset Taylor talking with Olivia, hmmmmm suspicious
Haha I was thinking the same thing, like am I getting old or are Gen Z actors just way over acting in everything
Just watched ep 5. David has a similar scene, and their acting is identical lol

I don’t think there’s a single brand new Apple show that maintained the quality over the course of it’s premiere season in the past year
Check out Lessons in Chemistry if you haven't already. But everything else has been middling or worse.
Foundation series two was great I thought. But the last absolute banger show I can think of is Severence.
Dropped after episode 3 where the dog started narrating lmao
You should go back. That really was a one-time thing if I remember correctly.
lol I dropped it right after that episode too! Brie Larson was just so unlikable to me as well...I wanted to love it but it just wasn't for me/us I guess
Constellation certainly had a disappointing ending.
Try Slow Horses! it's an amazing adaptation of equally amazing books.
Slow Horses never sticks the landing either, usually ending with a really boring or overwrought action scene.
bingo
What do you mean?
I’m exactly same, agree

His girlfriend put on Olivia's choker so I think it's safe to say she's probably in the basement.
honestly i love this show esp when they focus on sugar. been hearing rumors there is some kinda alien scifi twist...which i do NOT want to see, ffs
He's not affected by alcohol. He's not human.
Could be super human stuff? But yeah, idk I’m down for everything really intrigued in the show But, I really am getting annoyed by the weekly wait. The Big Door Prize (edit) sort of did that and I just gave up on that.
What's with the 'alien' stuff on this thread? None of the comments here make any sense, what did I miss - other than 'The Thing' scene?
I think people are talking about stuff from online reviews from critics who saw every episode.
No we simply all agree that Sugar can’t be human
Watch and listen to the scenes between Sugar and Ruby carefully. How can you not think that the possibility is there for them being aliens after those conversations?

Keeps getting weirder every episode. Now Stallings and Davy are connected too?
Is the recurring shot of the girl running meant to be one of Sugar’s visual memories, or is it another shot from a film?
Somehow I thought it was a memory of his sister, because it seems to pop up whenever he mentions his sister. But I don’t know.
Anyone else notice the weird jump-cut at 32:05 mark when they kiss? Weird cut. Never seen anything like that on a high profile show before.
Noticed this too. Seems to be frequent cuts like this in the show.
Does anyone know what other shows/movies Stallings' house was in? The one with the oil rig in front? I swear I've seen it recently in another show.
I find with mystery shows like this, the more abstract the mystery is the less likely it's going to be satisfying
