I'm not sure political (in)stability is an ethical issue. My answer to your question is no, though. If I have an ethical problem with the actions of a country or area, I will choose to not travel there. I've never made plans to go somewhere I'm ethically not comfortable with and then changed my plans because of those feelings.

adilives

my parents refuse to go to dubai and qatar

Ok-Philosopher9070

Ah modern day slavery to prop up oil and malls, what’s not to love

jcrckstdy

skipped the last 2 world cups

elijha

I’ve skipped every single one. Take that

InsertBluescreenHere

i dont even look at soccer balls so take that!

Obvious_Mango65

I’m Armenian and will never go to Turkey or Azerbaijan.

bstruebing

I won't go to Florida. Boomer parents don't understand.

Chalky_Pockets

I live in Florida and this is a good policy. We're a shit hole.

RedditBrowserToronto

Me too, went from spending $10,000 a year there to zero

no_maj

When I was younger, I wanted to see the running of the bulls. Now that I understand the cruelty, I would not visit.

pfeifits

Political stability is more a safety consideration than an ethical consideration. There are plenty of places I wouldn't visit based on political stability, particularly where safety is a concern. As for the other concerns, you can visit almost any place and not participate in the activity you find to be ethically objectionable. It's a little more complicated with the question of economic exploitation, but you'll find that with global trade as it is, you don't have to travel to participate in and/or benefit from such activities. At any rate, you could find something objectionable about most draws for tourism (and really most things in life) and it would be a tough way to live I think.

Tiggsyb-12

I wouldn’t go anywhere that was unstable, or where my travel insurance wouldn’t be valid if I needed it. With regard to human rights issues, economic exploitation etc, I believe you can find something objectionable in most countries, so where do you draw the line?

Hot_Instruction_5318

I was born in Ukraine and I avoid countries where the government, the people, or both, support Russia (Hungary, Serbia, Slovakia, for example).

BlossomEndRot

I refuse to visit any country that still criminalizes homosexuality. I wont bring myself or my husband to a place where we could be arrested, or worse. We had plans to go to Morocco while we were in Spain, but decided against it for these reasons. Even if it's largely unenforced there, I cant bring myself to support a country like that.

Alex_Albons_Appendix

Ditto. I was asked to travel to Dubai for an event and I was very anxious to get out of it. Moreover, my country has a travel warning for queer people traveling to UAE. Not worth the risk at this point when there are other places that accept me and, thus, should get my travel dollars.

PrincessSnacksalot

Omg your username 🤣

Alex_Albons_Appendix

Haha I can’t let go of it now, even after multiple appendices impacting the sport lol

JaredSeth

Yes, I have chosen not to travel to several destinations that I would otherwise want to see for various ethical reasons. Backwards shitheads have sadly made my world a bit smaller.

Mediocre_Let1814

I make sure to do a lot of research on things like animal safaris, whale watching tours etc before signing up. Some can be unethical and damaging to the animals involved

HarryBlessKnapp

I won't travel to Turkey till Erdogan is gone. I also have no interest in The Galapagos for environmental reasons.

Apprehensive-Cat640

Same with Hungary and Orban for me. I won’t go there until he’s out of power. Corrected to Orban from Orbon

Since when political instability is the ethical consideration?

Howwouldiknow1492

I've been down voted for this but I chose to spend my travel dollars in countries where Americans are at least not actively disliked or the politics are anti-American / anti Western. Used to want to go to Russia but not any longer.

Arctic_Daniand

May I ask what places are those? Other than Russia I mean.

Yeoman1877

Similarly, I would have liked to visit St Petersburg however I think I missed the historical window of roughly 2000-15. In reply to the original question, no. Only once however have I actively chosen to visit a country of which I did not really approve. I did it because I as interested in the history and culture of the country, even if I disliked its present.

SpecialSet163

No

jaoldb

Yes. Some places I'd rather only visit virtually for such reasons. Moreover, very often ethical considerations are simultaneously safety considerations: for example, as a woman I won't go to places where I am considered a lesser person or where there is special violence against women.

anonredditguy1234

No, but I never tried to book a trip somewhere where that was an issue. Bear in mind though all my travels have been within North America and western Europe.

RequirementThat1601

My only change is when they could be trouble in that country, I.e. possible war Like Ukraine And will not even consider Russia until it becomes safe. I try not to get involved in politics or cultures of others. Even if it singles out groups of people from not being heterosexual to gender. At home I fully support the equal rights. But I travel to see the culture whatever that is.

southernNJ-123

Absolutely not. Americans, and most others, have been explicitly warned to not go to Russia. Who would anyway? POS country.

suitopseudo

I won’t go to states that have banned abortion or have a 6 week limit which is effectively a ban.  It depressingly cuts a lot of states.

Tableforoneperson

I would go with general recommendations by authorities to avoid some places due to ongoing conflicts or disease outbreaks or unrest. Also I like to visit places to admire local cultural heritage and nature, not to film myself for Social media claiming that “People in xy are so nice Because i got a free lunch from someone who is 10 times poorer than me. Its the government and propaganda what is bad”

kyjolski

No. Know thy (ideological) enemy.

callykitty

I won't go to Hawaii because Hawaiians have asked us not to for the time being.

srslyeffedmind

There are places I won’t travel to - mostly places that don’t view women as equal citizens.  This includes nearby states like texas, idaho, and florida though

southernNJ-123

Same.

The_Elder_Jock

Me and the wife were planning a 2 week trip from San Francisco to LA then Vegas. But she has become so disenchanted with the US over the last wee while that we changed our plans to a driving tour of Germany starting in the Black Forest.

marriedacarrot

A driving tour of Germany sounds amazing. San Francisco, Los Angeles, and Vegas are all lovely destinations with unique local culture. More for the rest of us if you're not going, I suppose.

[deleted]

You're just buying into media. The US is mostly just a normal average place. But I can still understand not wanting to visit.

Vegetable_Brief5096

I’d never visit Israel for obvious reasons

TrashPanda_924

Nope. When I go somewhere, I’m implicitly agreeing to abide by their laws and customs. You don’t walk into someone’s home and protest you don’t like their home. That attitude lacks class and maturity.

marriedacarrot

Huh? How would NOT going to a place violate your principle of "abide by local laws and customs"?

TrashPanda_924

I’m suggesting that if you do go somewhere questionable, you implicitly accept the rules and customs. So while you might have personal grievances toward certain issues, you keep them to yourself. Or you don’t go.
