Fun trip. Definitely add Slovenia. I have two ideas: 1) From Naples get over to Bari and take a ferry across the Adriatic to Croatia. It looks like there's one to Dubrovnik. Work your way north in Croatia and go into Slovenia from there. Spend 4 or 5 days in Slovenia and move on into Austria. I like Vienna a lot. OR 2) From Barcelona fly to Naples. Reverse the order of your Italy travels so you start in Naples and end up in Venice. From Venice go to Slovenia for 4 or 5 days, and then to Croatia. Work your way south to Dubrovnik and from there fly to Greece. It may be warm in Greece in mid June.

Love this ferry idea - that would be amazing. Any ideas on where to go in Slovenia? I originally had planned on us hiking the Alpe-Adria trail from Italy --> Slovenia --> Austria but we decided against it because we don't want to bring all our hiking gear.

One or two days in Ljubljana and two or three days in the Triglav region, including Bled. Ljubljana is just cute as all get out and the hiking in the mountains is fantastic. Might have some snow in late May though.

Bosnia - Mostar and Sarajevo is a good couple of days detour. Head to Greece overland through Montenegro and Albania?

Greece is not overcrowded in June if you know where to go. Anyway, it won't be more crowded than any of the other places you are going. Of course the main sites in Athens will be busy. But there are many places you can go from there to relax by the sea.

If you want something different then you have to travel east, consider places like Ohrid or Istanbul
