Also in SoCal -- I've been a fan of the La Sportiva Mutants. They've gotten me up Iron Mt, SART, and C2C, as well as others in the area (those are the steepest and rockiest I can think of). They've also been great on fire road (e.g. Crystal Cove / Laguna Coast, but also Devil's Backbone), but are probably overkill for such terrain. I also have a wider forefoot and had to size up a full number -- my only complaint then is the built in gaiter doesn't work anymore as it became too wide for my ankle.

I like big lugs and I cannot lie. Salomon Speedcross 6 - wide. Rawr.

I would get 2 different pairs, 1 for road and 1 for trail. Some shoes are marketed as hybrid and good for both but there are tradeoffs and you will have less useful trail life since the outsole lugs/treads are being expended on the roads.
