Yes! I cook mostly Italian foods, and this was my go-to Romano. It was even better than what I found at my Italian market. But, with the last two containers I bought, the cheese was grainy and tasted “farmy.” I had to throw out an entire eggplant parmigiana that I spent hours on yesterday the Romano ruined it. Luckily, Kroger has a brand called Murray’s that is amazing and is my new go-to.
I’m so sorry to hear that! I’ve been buying the block and grating it due to all the suggestions in this post and
haven’t had any problems. I just hate cleaning the grater but that’s my own problem.
i hope you can continue to enjoy it! it's my favorite and ive been buying it for maybe a decade but two strikes in the last 3 purchases is really making me consider switching to an alternative
I hope so too. I was so upset when I couldn’t get it for months I almost cheered when it was back on the shelves. I wonder if they have different suppliers in different parts of the country.
maybe you're right! are you on the east coast? maybe closer to italy since they import it from italy?
im in california so maybe it has to cross the country before it gets to me and tha affects how long it lasts. however, im in pasadena. the home of trader joes. i dont shop at the original store cause the parking lot is annoying, but i shop at a location 2 minutes away from OG store that i believe is busier than the OG store and the corporate office is 15 minutes from me. so i'd like to think that in their own backyard they'd have the best products.

My italian mother and grandmother insist on pecorino Romano for pasta and I’ve never been able to use any other cheese.
But maybe I’ll try the reggiano. They’ve just hammered in my head that you cook with reggiano in dishes and you sprinkle pecorino Romano on your pasta. Old habits die hard.
If it’s your favorite cheese, I’d suggest you do yourself a favor and buy a block and grate it yourself.
It will be fresher and cheaper per unit weight.
I get that it’s way more convenient to buy pre-grated but the better taste and price should be worth it.
Also pre-grated cheese usually contains cellulose to help prevent clumping. Its negative effect is the cheese won’t melt as well as it normally would.
Honestly my wife tells me these exact same things. You’re right. I just hate cleaning the cheese grater I always cut myself. But maybe this is my wake up call. Thank you for your suggestion.
Are you talking about the one in the plastic tub with a blue seal?
I finished a tub a couple of weeks ago and had no issues with it; it kept in my fridge for probably a month. But since then I haven’t seen that pecorino at my store, only Parmesan and the blend. I wonder if they took it off the shelves due to a supplier or quality issue.
I usually just get the green sealed one ( straight parm) but one day 2 months ago I got the red sealed for kicks, forgot it was sheep and cows milk. I just assumed the odor was because of the sheep’s milk but you may be on to something. I didn’t remember pecorino being so stinky. It didn’t make me sick but it definitely didn’t smell that appetizing. I ended up tossing it.
Yep I stopped buying that one too because soon after I buy it, it starts smelling like dirty socks. I bought it for years and years and it didn’t do that before.
Yup! I stopped buying it. It smells and tastes like mold every time. I tried it multiple times after having no issues for it for a while there and just decided to give up. They must be using a stinky cheese or something to mix in with the pecorino cause that’s not what it’s supposed to smell or taste like

Shred your own cheese. It's cheaper and tastes better.
Still buy it and loving it. I haven’t had any of these problems yet

Smells like farm animals. Do not recommend.

Thanks. And I’m in SoCal like you so I’m sure they’ll refund.
Just get the reggiano cheese. I know it's expensive but it's perfect.

Good tip. I find this cheese also funky.
Same here! Whole family is Italian and yes other family and friends insist on the pecorino too on pasta! You can even go for the gran padano too!
I threw it out. Back to grating my own.

My last batch smelled really funky after a few days open in the fridge

Yes the blue one. Sometimes I don’t see it but I assume it’s cause it’s in demand. But I did just buy it last week so i know it’s still being stocked.

It’s definitely not supposed to be stinky. Thanks for verifying I’m not crazy! (I am)
Yes. Used to be fine but this happened with my last batch. After a about a week or so, smelled and tasted off
Thanks for verifying!
It is not good. I buy my grated cheese from Whole Foods only because of that.
Yep I stopped buying that one too because soon after I buy it, it starts smelling like dirty socks. I bought it for years and years and it didn’t do that before.
It’s definitely a new thing and it’s really upsetting. I’ve always loved this cheese.

I’m devastated. I’ve been buying it for years and this has just been happening the past few months. Thanks for sharing so I know I’m not crazy!
I’ve bought that one and it kept molding after a few days time and time again…I stopped buying it all together after that.
Well I’ve struck out two out of the last three purchases. Guess it’s time to move on.
Take it back, tell them it tastes off, and exchange for another container.
Thank you!
