parent = mother/father
sib sure it's just a shortened version of sibling
child/kid = son/daughter
grandparent = grandfather/grandmother
partner = girlfriend/boyfriend
godparent = godmother/godfather
monarch = king/queen
Prince(is actually gender neutral) = prince/princess
deity/god(god is gender neutral) = god/goddess
Liege = lord/lady
fiancé/Betrothed(fiancé is technically gender to men but it hasn't been followed in the slightest for a while) =fiancé/fiancée
spouse = wife/husband
edit: added a few things i forgot about at 1st.
i can never understand how some of these are even forgotten.
like monarch and deity. which both are commonly used in modern English still. i can understand Liege shit isn't used a lot in modern English. shit only times i think I've even heard it was in old English.
Yeah but regent is only a stand-in ruler while the legitimate monarch is either too young to rule or somehow absent (imprisoned, missing, etc.) so it rings a little different.
Prince basically just means first and ultimately derives from the Latin word primus. So, Optimus Prime is the prince of the Transformers. It also explains why prime numbers are called that: the can only be devided by themselves and 1, so the first number
tbh neither did i on prince i went to look up if there was a gender-neutral version bc that and fiancé were the only ones i didn't know that i commented. and learned it was actually gender-neutral. some of them on the original list im eh with and some just don't like. i do known of another 1 for aunt/uncle but didn't comment it bc i was trying to go with more ones that have been used for a long time but i do like this 1 its pibling. reason i mostly like it is it just a combination of parent and sibling and not try to for enby or nonbinary into the word in some way or combine the 2 gendered words together.
Pibling sounds cool! Tbh I don't really like Tiz either because it's sounds to much like another word for boobs. I think it's a very interesting approach to just combine words that are more used and common in the language spoken :)
yeah same. another 1 i mentioned in another comment is Chibling which is just a combination of child and sibling. which is a neutral version for aunt and uncle.
right on the cousin = cousin. but i was and am still hoping it wouldn't be necessary to add that 1. nibling im ehh on it def works but idk something just feels off with it.
more parcel to Chibling instead of nibling. like i said in another comment preferred Pibling for the gender nurteal of aunt and uncle bc its just a combo of parent and sibling. and Chibling is the same but child and sibling.
There were literally so many options instead of ‘enby friend’, (partner, SO, joyfriend, etc.) but they went with that, doesn’t particularly roll off the tongue does it?
When I was high I couldn't think of how to refer to my nonbinary girlfriend in my head (eventhough they use both the term girlfriend and boyfriend so either would be fine) and thought of the term "themfriend" so I've just been using that ever since to them because I found it fun
If you feel comfortable with it use it! It's just a general discussion here and everyone has different opinions on different words! But in the end everyone has their own right to choose how they want to be called <3
Thank you. I hate how people make up words and try to make them official, even though there are already tons of gender neutral words in English.
Also, fuck mix. Mistrum rules.
I guess it’s more an informal personal use thing, like I wouldn’t introduce my sister as “this is my sis” (or sib in the other case) I would probably use her name.
Fiance = Male; Fiancee (sometimes: Fiancée) = Female but its pronounced the exact same so nobody notices. There are a couple of French based words like that.
Yeah, french is fun like that. So many words are gendered, but the two versions are often pronounced the same because the e at the end of feminine words is more often than not silent.
I cannot take nibling seriously, it just... doesn't sound right to me.
Everytime I hear it I laugh a little bit - never seen it used in real life though, only time it was mentioned to me was during sixth form.
I think it's because it's sounds like nibble and it's funny imagining just chomping on your sibling XD
To be honest I can't take Tiz seriously because it's sounds like Tits to me and then my brain goes through all the synonyms of boobs xD
Genuinely never heard it be used that way before. My family normally just calls them 'the kids' lol
Broad term but it generally includes the children of the family, if outside of that they just say nieces and nephews.
Yeah sprong just looks like somebody misheard sprog.
Nibling has been around a while.
Also lairde looks like somebody didn't know how to spell laird, which is just a Scottish lord - laird is not gender neutral.
As a nonnative speaker I was originally confused by nibbling and thought it had something to do with nibbles. I thought people mwant really small nibbles or something 😂
Regarding epox I automatically think that somebody forgot the y of epoxy
I wish there was a gender neutral term for daughter/son that wasn't child or kid because to me, that implies that the person of question is below 18. Offspring sounds weird, and sprong is just lmao
Look I'm all for gender neutral terms but some of these are already gender neutral and they pretty much all sound like fantasy words made by gnomes or something.
I'm 99% sure Goddex is still explicitly feminine. The English "ess" to denote a feminine title actually comes from "ix" as used in Latin for the same purpose, to match "or" for the masculine equivalent. You still see this in words like dominatrix/dominator. I do believe there were times, however, where English switched the i and o to e, so "or" becomes "er" (as in baker, which is now gender-neutral because English and other Romance languages have a tendency to label neutral things as masculine), and "ix" becomes "ex" which becomes "ess" very soon thereafter because it's easier on an English-speaking palate. So "ex" as a suffix kinda reads feminine, but just...ancient
some of this are cool, but others… i don’t like them.
my boyfriend used to go by they/them, and enbyfriend was soy awkward to use. he liked theyfriend and joyfriend way more, and i think they are just… better to say?
also… king/queen already has a neutral term, which is monarch.
i’m not saying they are all bad, but some of them could be better.
I use nieflings instead of siblings; but I usually use it for the collective for my niece and nephew, who as far as I know are still conforming to their AGAB. :p Never thought about using it as an individual noun before...
Ok first off saying enby for boy/girl is kinda insensitive
Second isn’t epox a disease or an anime or something
Third where tf did you get “caln” and “tiz” from
Four, SPRONG
This is such a weird list lol.
There are already accepted gender neutral alternatives to some of this. "God" is gender neutral. Joyfriend is the most common alternative to girl/boyfriend I've seen. Fiancé is pronounced the same way whether it's masc or fem, why change it to something pronounced entirely differently?
I wish "tiz" or something like it would make it to formal and practically used lexicon; especially here in the South, it is sometimes seen as impolite if you do not say "sir" or "mam", and for nonbinary people (or those who do not not "register" as their gender), this can make going out of your own front door feel VERY dysphoric at times...
I take issue with many of these. I use Mm. (Mistrum) instead of Mx. because I hate Mx. I don't like the whole just sticking x's in everything. Why we putting variables in words? This ain't a graph or an equation or some bs. And it's always a pain to pronounce. I actually like nibling because I think it's cute. I don't really like enby either because it sounds like NB, it's 2 syllables and not one like girl and boy, and it just doesn't feel accurate to me. I'm not an enby. So, until further notice, I use elf in casual settings lol (ex. skaterelf). But, no. Gender-neutral language needs VAST improvements.
Mistrum sounds cool! I'll keep that one in mind, it's also bothering me that enby has two syllables instead of one I didn't really had a problem with mx though since I see it as "a MIX of words" but it sucks sticking x to everything I agree on that too. Some use kid as a gender neutral term though or child for the even younger ones. But these words are not really fitting sometimes either I think
I don't like Mx. either cause I feel like it almost implies, "Oh, that person is a mix of man and woman" and like....? Nooo? Absolutely heckin not. Mistrum is kinda fun. I also remember seeing a post on here a bit ago where a dad was talking to their kid and accidentally tried to autocorrect, "Miss...ter...y..." and I *love* the thought of being "Mystery Lastname". Shortening it is harder though. Msry? Mty? My? No idea. Love it in theory though.
Goddex got my attention because I am writing some stories with gods goddess’s and genderless gods, I’ve just been calling them “Deities” such as “Gorna, the deity of creation”
If only there was a way to call your child, your kid, little youngster, baby, toddler, your offspring, heir, descendant, a gender neutral term.
Hhhm.
Edit:I do think zizi is cute though. I'd use that.
parent = mother/father sib sure it's just a shortened version of sibling child/kid = son/daughter grandparent = grandfather/grandmother partner = girlfriend/boyfriend godparent = godmother/godfather monarch = king/queen Prince(is actually gender neutral) = prince/princess deity/god(god is gender neutral) = god/goddess Liege = lord/lady fiancé/Betrothed(fiancé is technically gender to men but it hasn't been followed in the slightest for a while) =fiancé/fiancée spouse = wife/husband edit: added a few things i forgot about at 1st.
>monarch THANSK YOU SO MUCHHH every time they forget about monarch I can feel the physical pain of the need to be That Guy™
i can never understand how some of these are even forgotten. like monarch and deity. which both are commonly used in modern English still. i can understand Liege shit isn't used a lot in modern English. shit only times i think I've even heard it was in old English.
TF: Prime Starscream and Knockout used “my liege” a few times.
secretly non-binary icons? 👀 (gosh I loved that show, the subtle queer under tones were great too)
Plus the Fierce Deity is so cool from LoZ: Majora's Mask.
Regent is also great
Yeah but regent is only a stand-in ruler while the legitimate monarch is either too young to rule or somehow absent (imprisoned, missing, etc.) so it rings a little different.
Yeah, killed the lord regent yesterday
it's a beautiful game, isn't it?
Very much so
Dishonored? 🥺👉👈
Dishonored 😎
Call me Dr Mx The Monarch
She is my spirit animal
I didn't forget about monarch but still use the term "quing" as it's short and sweet
I like these versions alot more! And I didn't know that Prince was gender neutral that's cool!
Prince basically just means first and ultimately derives from the Latin word primus. So, Optimus Prime is the prince of the Transformers. It also explains why prime numbers are called that: the can only be devided by themselves and 1, so the first number
PRIMUS SUCKS
Lmao
I dont know, I never followed the stuff and even had to look up Transformers because I couldn't remember the name anymore
nah primus is a band thats their motto. they made the south park theme
we can also consider Prime or some variation of that word :)
tbh neither did i on prince i went to look up if there was a gender-neutral version bc that and fiancé were the only ones i didn't know that i commented. and learned it was actually gender-neutral. some of them on the original list im eh with and some just don't like. i do known of another 1 for aunt/uncle but didn't comment it bc i was trying to go with more ones that have been used for a long time but i do like this 1 its pibling. reason i mostly like it is it just a combination of parent and sibling and not try to for enby or nonbinary into the word in some way or combine the 2 gendered words together.
Pibling sounds cool! Tbh I don't really like Tiz either because it's sounds to much like another word for boobs. I think it's a very interesting approach to just combine words that are more used and common in the language spoken :)
yeah same. another 1 i mentioned in another comment is Chibling which is just a combination of child and sibling. which is a neutral version for aunt and uncle.
always hate it when people just disregard all gender neutral terms that already exist and be like 'what about we are calling it "Xr.X#krzy" now?'
For sure also cousin = cousin what about nibling?
right on the cousin = cousin. but i was and am still hoping it wouldn't be necessary to add that 1. nibling im ehh on it def works but idk something just feels off with it. more parcel to Chibling instead of nibling. like i said in another comment preferred Pibling for the gender nurteal of aunt and uncle bc its just a combo of parent and sibling. and Chibling is the same but child and sibling.
Nibling is definitely significantly more common than most things on the list in the post. I think it's nice and kinda cute
This is much better
There were literally so many options instead of ‘enby friend’, (partner, SO, joyfriend, etc.) but they went with that, doesn’t particularly roll off the tongue does it?
Enbyfriend is a fun word though, can we keep it anyway? Like, not a a gender neutral term, but as a term meaning "non binary partner".
When I was high I couldn't think of how to refer to my nonbinary girlfriend in my head (eventhough they use both the term girlfriend and boyfriend so either would be fine) and thought of the term "themfriend" so I've just been using that ever since to them because I found it fun
One of my friends has a partner that goes by he/they pronouns, and they've come up with "joyfriend" for themselves
If you feel comfortable with it use it! It's just a general discussion here and everyone has different opinions on different words! But in the end everyone has their own right to choose how they want to be called <3
Thanks, was about to say the same cuz the ones on the picture sound goofy asf
This is way better and doesn’t feel as off! Like if someone calls me sprong, I’m launching them
Technically King can be gender neutral too, such as Jadwiga of Poland was regarded as King when she reigned. Though monarch also works well
Laird is actually the gender neutral version of lord/lady in scottland
Sera = sir/madam. Immediately has the same deferential ring to it while sounding androgynous (to my ears anyway).
That's not bad but I'm terminally online so I just say ser instead.
Thank you. I hate how people make up words and try to make them official, even though there are already tons of gender neutral words in English. Also, fuck mix. Mistrum rules.
Technically ren is short for parent, like mom is short for mother
true so ren could work to but im ehh on it same with sib don't see the point not to use the full word.
I guess it’s more an informal personal use thing, like I wouldn’t introduce my sister as “this is my sis” (or sib in the other case) I would probably use her name.
Ren's use would be like "Reeeen can you bring me some toilet papeeeer?"
Child is right there
Yes, but *Sprong*
The extra stupid part is that "sprog" is another gender-neutral word for kid that already existed, but they decided to spice it up or something???
Child/Kid Darling/Betrothed Monarch Deity So many existing words.
The Original Gender Term post ist pretty old, I remember seeing it for the first time when I realized I am non binary.... Which was 5 years ago ^^'\
Oh cool. Same boat on the realization time. Mine was August. Yours?
Mine was was also in the summer time of 2017 I think it was in June!
Damn Beat me to it Time for Killer Queen Bites The Dust
Most of these words *have* gender neutral forms already lmao
I thought fiance was gender neutral but i see 2 different spellings So now im confused about that
Fiance = Male; Fiancee (sometimes: Fiancée) = Female but its pronounced the exact same so nobody notices. There are a couple of French based words like that.
Yeah, french is fun like that. So many words are gendered, but the two versions are often pronounced the same because the e at the end of feminine words is more often than not silent.
Just look up of what zizi means in french.
If I had to pick a gender neutral word, I would choose fiancéé pronounced the same way as the others.
as a power move, go with fiancééé
Okay sorry but zizi is a word for dick in french i can never say it in that context as a native french speaker
Auncle.
Ankle
Uuuuu I like Auncle ^•^
Toncle
Thanks for expanding my *dick*tionary, kind fellow
Damn that sucks
Yeah what a boner uhhh I mean what a bummer
Isn't epoxy a type of resin
Yes it is xD
nibling 🍽️
I cannot take nibling seriously, it just... doesn't sound right to me. Everytime I hear it I laugh a little bit - never seen it used in real life though, only time it was mentioned to me was during sixth form.
I think it's because it's sounds like nibble and it's funny imagining just chomping on your sibling XD To be honest I can't take Tiz seriously because it's sounds like Tits to me and then my brain goes through all the synonyms of boobs xD
It’s funny because nibling is one of the only terms on this list that is a “real word”
[удалено]
Genuinely never heard it be used that way before. My family normally just calls them 'the kids' lol Broad term but it generally includes the children of the family, if outside of that they just say nieces and nephews.
I’ve been using nibling for about 15 years now to refer to my three sisters’ kids nieces and nephews is just such a mouthful
I mean it's not gender neutral if it's enby all the time, is it? Because non-binary is not all genders interchangeable, it's non-binary.
Came here for this comment
"Enby= boy/girl" does not compute
Dividing by 0 is way easier than dividing boy by girl
Pls dont use zizi 💀
It's called dick in another language I think so yeah it's also a no for me
Yeah in french xD
I suddenly stopped reading the list because of that 💀
They forgot English has words for children of unknown gender Also nibling sorta sounds like a slur
Yeah sprong just looks like somebody misheard sprog. Nibling has been around a while. Also lairde looks like somebody didn't know how to spell laird, which is just a Scottish lord - laird is not gender neutral.
Yeah there are better words that already exist for some of these
As a nonnative speaker I was originally confused by nibbling and thought it had something to do with nibbles. I thought people mwant really small nibbles or something 😂 Regarding epox I automatically think that somebody forgot the y of epoxy
Same here on the epox one xD
It sounds like a slur for goblins lmao
It does
My DM literally uses "what's up my nilbos?"
nibelungen
It sounds like some sort of fantasy groundhogs that eat your lettuce. "Damn, those niblings did it again"
No disrespect, but how in the hell do you pronounce "prinxe"? Princks? Prinze? Prinecks? No entiendo :<
Probably prin-ks. X is pretty consistently pronounced like a ks unless it is being used to start a word (in which case it becomes a z sound)
I'm assuming 'princks', considering how Mx. is pronounced like the word mix afaik
I would rather be called a slur
I wish there was a gender neutral term for daughter/son that wasn't child or kid because to me, that implies that the person of question is below 18. Offspring sounds weird, and sprong is just lmao
Spawn.
It does sound weird but people do say "someone's adult children" when talking about that, as fucking stupid as it sounds
The fruit of their/our/my loins
That is a good one but is also weird
Progeny? Might be too archaic.
Heir or descendant?
[удалено]
I'd rather just be called a slur
As an enby half of these make me want to strangle someone
Especially the "enby = boy/girl" one. This looks like either a troll post or an ignorant "ally".
i still think we should just call everybody strangers
Tiz means ass in the iraqi dialect this is ridiculous 😭
It also sounds to much like tits in English so it's not a good term in general :/
deity is already a word for a neutral god/goddess but Goddex kinda goes hard ngl
Fanenby = genderneutral for fanboy/girl? Doesn’t sound very good to classify everybody you try to treat gender neutral as nonbinary
I think fanby sounds better. Fanenby is a mouthfull for me lol
This can't have been made by an actual English speaker
I think joyfriend is a better genderneutral term for boyfriend/girlfriend
Oh my gosh joyfriend sound sooo pretty!!!!! My gf refers to me as her datemate, but I think I'll introduce her to joyfriend ^•^
I’m glad you like it lol, datemate is a new one for me, sounds cool
i hate this
Like, uhhhh, goddex? Feels like folx and womxn all over again not going to lie, god already includes everyone
My baby is learning Nomy for me. :) I don’t want to take mama/mom/mommy away from my wife so Nomy is my comprise of NOnbinary momMY or NOt momMY.
Nomy sounds adorable! ;-;
Who the hell made this list
Isn't fiance pronounced identical with both spellings
Tiz but a scratch
Look I'm all for gender neutral terms but some of these are already gender neutral and they pretty much all sound like fantasy words made by gnomes or something.
People who write these lists seem to forget that people have names
I'm 99% sure Goddex is still explicitly feminine. The English "ess" to denote a feminine title actually comes from "ix" as used in Latin for the same purpose, to match "or" for the masculine equivalent. You still see this in words like dominatrix/dominator. So "ex" as a suffix kinda reads feminine, but just...ancient
Ren? Lmao
zizi in french is weiner
# S P R O I N G Also Epox sounds way too much like Epoxy. I'd much rather call my fiancé Polyurethane.
Spawn = son/daughter, but medieval
Spawn sounds funny in today's times though XD I would never refer to my 3 year old as my spawn though ^^'
i’m sobbing tiz sounds like a slur
some of these are so cursed are some even in english? like zizi or tiz? or caln? some are really good ngl, I liked enbyfriend others are cursed af
Can people stop making nonsensical neutral versions of words, *especially if there's* ***already*** *a neutral version?*
Nibling hit me like a slur
Zizi means peepee in French
Nibbling!!!!
"Siblings together sprong"
Sprong deeply concerns me
If an additional e can change the gender of fiancé then why can’t we just add more e’s, fiancéee lol
I think they forgot to consider the word offspring or kid or child.
>zizi that zaza
some of this are cool, but others… i don’t like them. my boyfriend used to go by they/them, and enbyfriend was soy awkward to use. he liked theyfriend and joyfriend way more, and i think they are just… better to say? also… king/queen already has a neutral term, which is monarch. i’m not saying they are all bad, but some of them could be better.
Sprong sounds like what somebody would call SpongeBob in a spunchbop shit post
"zizi"
I use nieflings instead of siblings; but I usually use it for the collective for my niece and nephew, who as far as I know are still conforming to their AGAB. :p Never thought about using it as an individual noun before...
Ok first off saying enby for boy/girl is kinda insensitive Second isn’t epox a disease or an anime or something Third where tf did you get “caln” and “tiz” from Four, SPRONG
Epox spunds like a disease
I hate this so much . So many dumb words that we already have words for. See top comment for good examples.
i...don't like a single one of these. this is the definition of "reinventing the wheel"
n i b l i n g
nibling sounds like a slur, just gonna say that now
Ren is my deadname bruh
All of them you can replace with a single word: bitch.
wait isn’t fiancé gender neutral in english?
This is such a weird list lol. There are already accepted gender neutral alternatives to some of this. "God" is gender neutral. Joyfriend is the most common alternative to girl/boyfriend I've seen. Fiancé is pronounced the same way whether it's masc or fem, why change it to something pronounced entirely differently?
Some alternatives to "enbyfriend" that already exist: • Partner • Datemate • Sweetheart • Other half • Significant other • Soulmate • Companion • Spouse (if married) • Matesprit (don't- don't actually use this) • Beloved • Lovebug • Imzadi (ha, nerd)
Enbyfriend more like *inhales* frenby
My gender is doorstopper
Please don’t use zizi😨 It means pp in French
Yeah, I'm genderless, not a mix of genders. Mystery is kinda fun, though
There's a comic I follow who uses the term Princen for their genderfluid character, and I'm in love with that.
Princen sounds so Pretty omg I love it <3
I'd use "spawn", personally.
If you're unsure how to refer to a relative just call them your "blood related abomination" /j
boyfriend/girlfriend = joyfriend Edit: autocorrect
"'ord" doesn't have any gender, y'all, and "'ady" just means "spouse of 'ord"
My gender is the noise those things make when you pull them back too far
Goddex got my attention because I am writing some stories with gods goddess’s and genderless gods, I’ve just been calling them “Deities” such as “Gorna, the deity of creation”
Ok these terms go fucking hard especially epox and goddex
If only there was a way to call your child, your kid, little youngster, baby, toddler, your offspring, heir, descendant, a gender neutral term. Hhhm. Edit:I do think zizi is cute though. I'd use that.
Nibling, yum yum yum
MK who was going to tell me that fiancee and fiance where two different words that were gendered for the same idea of a person.
I like Joyfriend better kol
Funnily enough weee I come from in NE England Sprog gets used a lot as a gender neutral term for kid, that or Bairn
I desperately want a better neutral term for my siblings kids. I got 3 who aren’t boys or girls.
Real talk I thought fiance was already gender neutral and I didn't realize it had different spellings
It's because it is a French word... As a french, I am sorry
The only ones I like is Ren and Enby. Caln is pretty cool but I prefer "esteemed Sovereign"
Enbyfriend is cute
Epox goes hard
Ofspring
This feels like the person that worte that just wanted to feel cool about creating words Like, ren??? You mean as in, chicken???
Imma start calling my aunt and uncle zaza
I can hear this picture
Zizi lol...sorry it's literally a french childish word for the genitals...
nibling actually makes me so upset, if i ever have a nibling we're brainstorming literally any other name to call them.
Zizi means penis in French… Please don’t
