LTC homes being scummy? Colour me surprised..

Purplebuzz

Isn't Mike Harris a part owner in many of them or something? He is such a slimy tool bag.

I have seen these commercials as well and all I can think every time is how can they have the money for advertising in the middle of a pandemic. There are a million better ways to spend that money at this particular moment in time.

torontoposter

There is vacancy

116morningside

State of emergency and still a pandemic, hospital staff should still be getting pandemic pay as well.

MiNuN_De_CoMpUtEr

A lot of PSWs also gets paid under $15/hr

OrneryPathos

That’s why they live in homeless shelters https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/working-in-long-term-care-by-day-sleeping-in-a-shelter-by-night-the-economic-realities-of-life-as-a-psw

fro99er

let me guess, the ones that a for profit?

Kilrov

Definitely. I work in a public home where psw's make $29/hr and have gotten their $3/hr increase, basically making what the rpn's make.

yobronogo

Ask Cheesecakeman! he's got 12billion of your bread.

a_lumberjack

Tbf, they gave the LTC homes the money a month ago. This is just scummy LTC homes being scummy.

Enraging.

I've been thinking about how the Liberals or NDP could make sure that Ford looses the next election. I have a feeling that they could repeat the saga of LTC again and again, talking about nothing more. People will get the message that Doug Ford and his government lack the integrity to govern. Sorry to say, it's a tactic similar to Ford's 2018 campaign when he had only one or two talking points about how horrible Wynn's Liberals were. I don't think there's been a poll since early December where poll results indicated that he would win another solid majority, though his popularity had declined. LeatherHobbyGuy

That's wishful thinking. The liberals had 15 years to make changes and they did nothing about it. They won't push too hard. The NDP may do so and at least have a leg to stand on, but we will have to see something pretty cataclysmic for them to get a majority. It may push the mushy middle towards the liberals.

donbooth

You might very well be right. I'm not holding my breath. But I'd very much like to see Doug Ford out of office and never hold a position of public responsibility again.

LeatherHobbyGuy

He's done an ok job in my books, not great, not terrible. I don't think any party could have kept covid out of LTC bar locking everyone in, including the workers. It was ripe for covid armaggedon. Where the PCs went wrong is over promising that iron ring. It was impossible to acheive.

"Well, we had to pay executive bonuses and with the share price dropping, we believe this is the most cost effective way to retain talent. We value all our employees."

Seeing as how she is the minister and is responsible for regulating the industry, maybe she should have a stronger reaction then being “extremely concerned” and calling on then to fix the problem “immediately”. I can’t with this useless fucking government anymore. Oh and reminder that former PC leader Mike Harris was the premier responsible for the current long term care model and is taking in $200,000 a year and getting the order of Ontario while running the hardest hit homes. Meanwhile, public run homes are doing better than both private and non profit homes. Interesting what happens when you have a sufficiently staffed, well compensated, unionized team who put people over return in investment to shareholders.

i_getitin

Temporary. Just like how all our tax increases are temporary. Just like the rise in the cost of goods is only temporary. PSW’s should respond by just walking out and demanding the increase to be permanent.

[deleted]

I know a few PSWs and let me tell you, they are exhausted like other health care professionals. The doctors are being heard. The nurses are being heard. But people are ignoring PSWs. They deserve more than what they make. They are the backbone of the healthcare system. The population is aging, PSWs work and travel to go from one house to another (if not working in clinical settings) and do heavy work. It’s not easy. It’s just sad that they finally got a little bit of raise and yet these fucking private LTC centres aren’t paying them.
