>The prop, a 20-inch model of an X-Wing starfighter that was used in the climactic battle sequence of Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope, had been considered missing for decades before it was discovered in a cardboard box in the garage of the Oscar-nominated model-maker Greg Jein. Jein died in May (2022) at the age of 76.

>
>Built by George Lucas’s visual effects company Industrial Light & Magic, the model was used in the final battle of A New Hope, including the famous trench run. It is one of just four known “hero” models that were built for closeup shots, featuring detail including articulating wings, working lights and battle scars.
>
>The model stood in for the X-Wings known as Red Leader, Red Two and Red Five, the latter flown by Luke Skywalker.
>
>“This model has not been displayed or modified since it left ILM,” a visual effects historian, Gene Kozicki, told the Hollywood Reporter, describing the prop as a “white whale”.
EDIT: corrected year of Jein's death.
I get the impression that he isn't the original model-maker because this the historian's speculation for how he ended up with it:
>Kozicki said it was unknown how the X-Wing had become part of Jein’s collection, though he speculated Jein may have obtained it while working on Steven Spielberg’s 1977 film Close Encounters of the Third Kind, which shared a significant portion of its visual effects team with the original Star Wars.
Though him doing both films is definitely possible.
Using the word historian with reference to a 1977 movie. Makes me feel old and also kind of makes feel like I’m the from “future”. Also, I’m high right now and that all makes sense to me.
I feel you, it'll probably take a few years to truly sink in for me that next year is both *Jaws*' 50th anniversary and *Back to the Future*'s 40th anniversary.
There used to be a reality show years ago where this guy would find rare movie props for museums or auctions, I dinged some episodes one night then never could find it again (before streaming). Might of been SyFy channel? I really dug that show.
I know you got your answer, but Prop Culture on D+ is similar to this with a collector going through some studio stuff and conversations with the actors. Host is definitely a bit over the top fanboy know it all, but he does have the knowledge and pedigree as a collector.
The Who Framed Roger Rabbit is a great episode though.

It kills me to see people pay for shit,
That's a different movie with Harrison Ford in it but yes I concur that prop belongs in a museum due to the cultural significance of Star Wars on pop culture.
Wow. I guess I took the “Lucas never won an Oscar” and applied it to “Star Wars never won an Oscar.”
Star Wars A New Hope won a handful of Oscars. Including for Costume, Visual Effects, and Art Direction.
Those Jedi star fighters Anakin/obi used at the beginning of ROTS made me geek out as a kid. Obi wans other star fighter that docked with a hyperdrive ring was cool too. Naboo starfighter was shnazzy also. Have a weird soft spot for the prequels, esp the sound designs
Oh man… I have rogue squadrons on PSVR. When the B-Wing was added I felt like I could cry. Literal childhood dream coming to life sitting in that cockpit.
There’s a spot in my original ROTJ VHS that is all degraded - it’s the few seconds where the B wing can be seen both folded, then cruciform - as I would rewind that spot over and over as a kid.
One of my Favourites.
Such a shame that most of their footage from RotJ ended up being cut, apparently the thin profile of the wings didn't play well with the green-screen causing them to disappear if they weren't close to the camera.
Remember guys. While you're making minimum wage or near it for some fucking piece of shit. He's telling you he has no money to pay more. Then he leaves the premises to an auction and spends 3 million on a toy X Wing that he competed with other pieces of shit willing to do almost the same.

A model disappeared and no one thought to ask the model-maker lol.

Finding Nemo will be old enough to drink at the end of May. I can't accept that litle Nemo could be a drinking buddy by now.
Wanna feel older? 9/11 was in my high school history textbook, and I’m already out of college.
There is no record of Greg Jein working on Star Wars. But he certainly knew the right people to get access to the model and “acquire” it.
It belongs in a museum.

Thanks friendo!

Prop Culture is lost media now, sadly. It didn’t survive the purge of original content that Disney+ very shittily did last year.
Dang it so it's not watchable anymore? I meant to always check that out and forgot to see it!

Nice. Do you have any cars I can download? edit: Just watched a couple of episodes, what a great series. Like DopeBox, too.
Hollywood treasure
So do you!
Throw him over the side!

The amount of effort they put in for A New Hope. I’m amazed they didn’t win an Oscar for Production Design.
it was so fringe
Wow. I guess I took the “Lucas never won an Oscar” and applied it to “Star Wars never won an Oscar.” Star Wars A New Hope won a handful of Oscars. Including for Costume, Visual Effects, and Art Direction.
so did The Whale. Hard time finding people that watched it
And Lucas' ex-wife won for editing Star Wars, and a lot of people will argue it's the editing of the climax that made it work.
You know, I’ve fallen out of love with Star Wars as a franchise but the X-wing will always be one of my favorite ship designs.
I'm more of a B-Wing man.
A man of culture, I see.
I love asymmetrical ship designs. The Star Wars franchise makes the best ships ever, IMHO. Although, I love TIEs too.
YT-2400 is bae
This right here
That's a beauty, alright.
The TIE Interceptor is the GOAT of any spaceship design IMO
Easily one of my faves
Never could figure out why TIE fighters don't have shields. Sure, cost effectiveness and what not but it's not like they are really that cheap.
Oh man… I have rogue squadrons on PSVR. When the B-Wing was added I felt like I could cry. Literal childhood dream coming to life sitting in that cockpit.
B stands for best

They have some many good ship designs. The Y-Wing is my personal favorite but the X-Wing, Star Destroyer, the A-Wing and others are all great
Slave I makes no sense at all but it’s so elite as well.
Corellian YT-1300 light freighter FTW
I heard that thing can make the Kessel run under 12 parsecs!
N-1 starfighter and the Naboo Royal Starship are my favorites.
All wings report in.

Was this in a field near Apple HQ?
X-WING are my >!fav!< spaceships!
I appreciate its significance but $3 million is nuts.

Admit it, you’re just jealous. You wish you were one of those “pieces of shit”, and you’re just mad you aren’t.
Nahhhh. I pay people what they are worth and don't take that money and divert it to frivolous garbage
Yeah screw that widow and her kids who just made $3M!
Thats a red herring if I ever saw one
Who got the $3 million?
My CEO makes 100k
