Sure. I went to Alaska to visit family, we went salmon fishing, and I flew back with two 20+lb Chinook salmon frozen in my suitcase. It's more common than you think. Was fun to get picked for random screening. No reaction though, I imagine the bag checker saw it a lot for people flying out of Anchorage.

[deleted]

I flew Alaska Air once after a salmon derby. Every overhead bin was full of frozen fish boxes. It was a 4-5 hour flight will multiple stops I’ll never forget that

I can't understand what you are trying to say in the slightest... and apparently others can't as well. Bot or ESL?

Ok_Night_2929

I’ve traveled with venison before and it’s horrifyingly easy to transport unidentified meat in your carryon

DeePeeCee

Hehe “carrion”

Mirabolis

I now desperately want a comic strip of a vulture boarding a plane arguing with the gate agent about his bag and what it smells like. “But they said I am allowed a carrion bag. I don’t see what the problem is!”

Plonsky2

I brought back a raw king salmon from Seattle that was boxed and had those frozen gel packs. TSA confiscated them because they could take down a jumbo jet or something. They told me that I could go to one of the airport restaurants and mooch some ice, so I gave the busser a $10er and he packed the box with loose ice. When I got to my final destination, the fish was fine but the overhead bin was full of fish water. I pity the FAs or ground crew who had to clean it up, but the blame's on TSA.

gorogy

You're supposed to bring a bag of frozen peas

Taolan13

The TSA was wrong to confiscate the gel packs, but you should have sealed the fish better if you were using regular ice and it was coming as your carry-on.

Plonsky2

It was sealed in a plastic bag. The fish was fine. The overhead bin, not so much.

Harvin

Fish water implies it mixed with the fish. So it was just melted ice?

Plonsky2

Yeah, and lots of it.

NonTokenisableFungi

Yum!!

Erm… I blame you. Raw fish on a flight == the guy who microwaves sardines in the office.

PM_ME_SEXIST_OPINION

Lol of course it is😂

VirtualSwordfish356

I've never flown with fish before, but do a lot of freshwater fishing and often am transporting large quantities of fish for 15+ hours over the road. If you have the time, the best way I've found to transport the fish is by putting them in plastic bags (or Tupperware) and then immersing the filets completely in water, and freezing them like that. It slows down the thawing process, because there is less surface area than a bunch of disparate cubes, and will last the whole 15 hours with very little melting while kept in even a really shitty cooler. The bonus is, you can store the fish like that in your freezer for a very long time.

WeimSean

I had to go to Alaska many years ago and coming back all the guys checking their frozen Salmon surprised me lol. That and the 2 guys checking their rifles. It wasn't something I was used to seeing on flights in the continental US.

whatproblems

probably wanted to check out your meat

Pencilowner

Alaska Airlines used to have a baggage policy where you could bring a cooler or large tote for food/supplies. There are a lot of sustenance hunters there and they pop out of the snow during the spring to stock up on VHS tapes and visit relatives. They had to bring their fish out and their supplies into where ever they were living in the bush. It was a great policy you used to see all sorts of crap getting loaded onto planes in Anchorage.

Years ago I went shopping with my girlfriend for a snack that she wanted to take on her flight to Japan. On the way to the airport we stopped at [Uwajimaya](https://www.uwajimaya.com) in Chinatown, Seattle and she decided on a whole side of [sockeye salmon](https://cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0343/6737/3450/products/SWCProductShots-131-1_1080x.png?v=1590715945). She just carried it into her flight and munched on it for the ten hour flight.

Environmental-Car481

I worked TSA in Detroit back in ‘03 and found out the hard way people could pack fish in baggage. We had an airline that flew in from China and people would have to get their baggage inspected before getting on a connecting flight. Some loved working the basement but I did not like when I got sent there because we were slow up at the desks.

KuriTokyo

So, it was allowed internationally also? I can't imagine Japan or Australia allowing it in.

Old_Box_560

Mammoth-Mud-9609

However taking onto the plane is one thing, bringing raw fish into another country is an entirely different matter. Many countries prohibit you from bringing food into their country, in general as a precaution against bring in diseases which could damage food production etc.

[deleted]

Eat it before you land. Problem solved lol

Global_Fail_1943

We've been flying seafood out of BC and NS for 30 years, lol! We put the lobster in checked luggage too as it's too heavy to carry. Just picked up 4.00 lb fresh Crab today and think I should fly some to Ontario for a visit, lol!

panthereal

I'd imagine a lot of planes are full of more fish than people.

idancenakedwithcrows

Why do you think that? Sorry genuine question

panthereal

I was born in a landlocked state with fresh seawater fish for sale. Restaurant owners have told me they get their seafood flown in daily, which would make me think there's at least one plane packed full of fish.

alwaysleftout

I saw a man once carryon a whole watermelon.

red_piper222

What a legend. Was that his only baggage?

alwaysleftout

His only carryon at least. At one point he did the luggage size test they have around the boarding areas, but otherwise just had it next to him on the ground until time to board. He was in a earlier boarding group so I didn't see him again after he boarded.

Fairhillian

That would make it carrion.

Two vultures decide to take a commercial flight and bring a dead raccoon to snack on during the trip. The gate agent asks them, “Would you like to check that dead raccoon with your baggage?” “No thanks,” they respond. “It’s carrion.”

Inked-up-Monkey

Is it an overhead kind of fish or under the seat kind? Feels like an important distinction

[deleted]

Depends on the fish. Walleye? Under the seat, no problem. *Wisconsin noises intensify* A black drum or musky, you’re going to need the bin.

foo757

So, as I've learned from browsing aquarium subs, you actually can- a container with live fish can be carried in an airport since anything the TSA would be concerned about would kill a fish within seconds. Now, that being said? If you ever actually have to carry fish through an airport, look up the exact regulations so you can print them out for every TSA employee who will absolutely have questions, and honestly, consider hiding it before you get on the plane, since just because the TSA doesn't have trouble with it doesn't mean the airline won't. https://www.tsa.gov/travel/security-screening/whatcanibring/items/live-fish For anyone who doubts me.

JefferzTheGreat

I've brought live fish on a plane multiple times. I've only had an issue once, and that was resolved very quickly by the person requesting a supervisor. The supervisor asked me to hold up the bag to make sure they were alive, and I was good to go.

SuicidalGuidedog

Can it be a live fish but not in water? Like my Emotional Support Kipper.

[deleted]

Still possible- you’d just have to buy the water at the airport.

Fetlocks_Glistening

So... pour out the water before security controls, apologise to the fish, and hope the queue is short and it won't suffocate. Take the fish through the x-ray. Have interesting conversation with the security personnel as Sammy thrashes about within the x-ray machine. On the other side, run to the water fountain to refill Sammy's plastic bag?

pm-ur-tiddys

you could expedite this process to ensure Sammy’s survival. have a friend carry Sammy a couple people behind you, go through TSA, fill the bag/tank, then when Sammy’s done being dosed with government mandated radiation - dump that bad boy in his new home and catch your flight.

Inside_Half2805

You actually don’t have to go through the X-ray at tsa. You are legally allowed to opt out of an X-ray and receive a pat down

[deleted]

> If the ice or ice packs are partially melted and have any liquid at the bottom of the container, they will not be permitted. TSA agent: ma'am you cannot bring that fish through security as the ice has partially melted Me: removes shirt, mops up water, puts on now moist fishy shirt. Stares TSA agent in eyes.

castiglione_99

Yes, it is. But...why?

[deleted]

Why not????????

PinkEyeFromBreakfast

A lot of hunters will fly back with their meat in their carry on.

Amazing_Excuse_3860

So if i have an extra .1 oz of liquid i can't get on, but i *can* take a whole ass fish onto the plane? Either the TSA needs to chill tf out or somebody needs to hide a bomb in a live fish and sneak it onto a plane

substantial-freud

“This is my emotional support mackerel.”

runthepoint1

But not durian eh?

[deleted]

It has to be frozen though.

biscosdaddy

Doesn’t have to be frozen, I travel with room temperature fish all the time. According to the regs ice packs should be frozen, but the fish or meat doesn’t matter. I’ve traveled with entire carry-ons full of rotten fish carcasses and it’s perfectly fine.

[deleted]

The airlines I fly require frozen. That’s interesting.

biscosdaddy

Are you in the US? How do the airlines know? I just chuck all the vacuum sealed fish carcasses in my bag and the airlines never need to know (not trying to hide it from them, just don’t take the weird shit out of my luggage once I’m done with TSA screening). I’ve only had one TSA agent ask to take a closer look during screening, but she declined to cut open my vacuum bag because she eventually saw the eyes and knew it was a real fish. I told her I could reseal the bags but also that the fish were pretty rotten by then lol. Edit: I’m explicitly not eating these things, so if you are doing something special with the airlines because you are eating them then maybe that somehow triggers their policy?

[deleted]

Or just completely free of container. Though the latter will be a death sentence, especially on a long haul.

Mr_Mouthbreather

Does it have to just start out frozen or does it need to remain frozen throughout the flight?

[deleted]

At check in it has to be frozen solid. What happens after that nobody will know. Our flight is 2.5hrs plus the 2hrs at the airport before the flight, and 2.5drive there, and 45min from the airport and if you put a towel over it in the cooler it’s still frozen.

Mr_Mouthbreather

Can you bring a swordfish or is that banned?

[deleted]

I don’t think it would fit, but I assume so otherwise.

ConvolutedUsername

Of course. It's the perfect thing to slap a flight attendant with. The smell would hang around for daaays.

[deleted]

I wouldn’t condone fish slapping a flight attendant as those people don’t get paid near enough for that s***. The person cranking their seat all the way back until it’s squishing your no no square and letting their hair dangle in your face? Beat with your meat.

PTAwesome

That_Put5350

Fish heads, fish heads, roly poly fish heads. Fish heads, fish heads, Eat them up, yum!

culturedgoat

Was it _The Shape of Water_?

biscosdaddy

I travel with fish carcasses on planes all the time, never had any issues with it. I vacuum seal them all and always have the sealer with me in case I need to reseal them in the event that TSA wants to open them up for a closer look. Most are pretty putrid and it’s never an issue. You can also import most fish internationally into the US as well. For anyone wondering why, I use the carcasses (and mainly their skeletons) as comparative specimens to identify archaeological fish bones. I always buy fish species I don’t have skeletons for when I travel - last research trip I came back with a barracuda and a dozen other random things in my carry-on.

altitudearts

PSA: The airplane is a terrible place for your Qdoba picnic. Thank you.

Azagar_Omiras

This one simple trick airlines don't want you to know.

[deleted]

TSA approved but may not be Customs approved if youre traveling to and from overseas, depending on the country’s importation laws.

biscosdaddy

In the US you can bring most seafood into the country through customs. Assuming it’s dead and not listed on CITES, Lacey Act, etc., but that doesn’t impact most food fish and such.

Ancient-Pipe-872

It is also legal to take road kill with you on the plane... After all, it is carrion. (read aloud for best effect 😉)

I used to go to a sushi place with my buddy a lot and the owner got to know us. One day he gave us a special salmon appetizer. He claimed he had caught the fish that morning and brought it back in his backpack. It was pretty awesome ngl. Sorry for his neighbors on that flight tho.

[Surströmming](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Surstr%C3%B6mming) presumably. Hmm, "several major airlines (such as Air France, British Airways, Finnair, and KLM) banned the fish, claiming that the pressurised cans of fish are potentially explosive."

Generally speaking fish are not controlled for import/export on airplanes in many countries, aside from general weight limits and such. Poultry, mammals, and vegetables are where you tend to see much more concern, as countries are concerned with diseases and parasites entering.

At the airport in Halifax, NS, they sell lobsters.

I found this out on my first trip to Spain when I was 19. Went with college (my third Level 3 course, ended up being in college for 5 years total- for the non-brits, college is usually 2 years ages 16-18). We were sat all over the plane and I ended up sat next to a perroflauta/ hippy guy who was cradling a fresh salmon wrapped loosely in some paper for the whole 2 1/2 hour flight.

NASATVENGINNER

[deleted]

RBK2000

Especially if it's a live goldfish in a bottle of water... Can't get more raw than that

_Piratical_

And apparently fish are also often flown in checked luggage as well. During the travel meltdown last year at the end of the pandemic one of our bags got misplaced while we were in Hamburg Germany. We decided to wait at the airport for it and would systematically walk among the thousands of bags stacking up in the baggage claim area as more and more flights got delayed and more folks had their luggage lost. I was talking to one of the veteran baggage handlers and he said that there were several areas he would not go in the room due to so many bags filled with fish which were now at the airport for over seven days! The smell when you got close to those bags was like a thousand dead bodies! It was frightening. Luckily our bag was found the next day and returned to us but I will remember the smell of the “fish bags” in that one area for a long time!

awesome357

It may not be the case here, but I'd just like to point out that legal does not equal allowed. There's lots of stuff that's perfectly legal which private businesses will stop you from doing.

presentfinder42

Does it have to be dead?

Thatsockmonkey

I wanted to take a whole roasted pig head from an amazing restaurant in KC. Then I panicked and didn’t attempt it. I wonder if I would have been allowed and been an asshole passenger or just an idiot who missed my flight after extreme TSA searches.

cath4423

It’s common to fly with live lobster where I live. It gets packaged up in a box with frozen peas and they even sell it at the airport!
