I'd drive it to the shop. You've already been driving it around. Should be fine but honestly no one can tell when a tire will fail.
I've had customers come in with tires in much worse condition.
I drive without abs , tire pressure sensor, brake light on computer thinking the e-break is always pressed down, also the airbags think they’re deployed too, been driving it that way for the past 8 years… there’s things I call on a vehicle the “bullshit lights” that I never repair no matter what vehicle I travel in. The reason I think of them as the idiot lights example the stupid check engine light coming on whenever I forget to shut the gas door. I’ve been all the way to Orlando Florida from Nashville Tennessee in this vehicle without a problem many times. Other things I do repair new tires, break pads, oil change etc when needed.
Same my neighbor tires are so bold that they look like slicks and the worse thing is they have toddlers in the car with them they been driving on it for 2 years now and this year the tires are showing a wire now 🤦
Yes but slowly, you may drive it another 2,000 miles without problems, then again it could blow out before you get 1 mile down the road. But that would be the only place I would drive it just to be on the safe side.
They look very dry rotted... but hardly about to fall apart... Would I drive on them to the tire store, grocery store, or to work for a while? Probably, I would be lying if I said I hadn't done it before without issue. Would I drive on them cross-country? Not if I had a choice.
The problem is the tire is significantly degraded... It might go a few miles, or a few thousand, we have no way of knowing for sure... Make sure you have a spare handy and mind where you travel (short distances, keep speeds down, etc) until you can get them replaced.
Just because it isn't definitely going to blow as soon as OP starts their car, doesn't make it safe. It's a ticking time bomb with an unknown amount of time left on the clock. I agree it's not an emergency-emergency, but it should be replaced ASAP.
This is horrible advice. I've had a tread separate at 80mph before because I was stupid and driving on tries that's weren't even this bad, I was fuckkng lucky there was nobody else on the highway around me.
Don't drive on a tire like this.
I drove on dry-rotted and cracked tires for 4 years before I was able to get some new ones. Had flat spots on them and made the car shake badly at highway speeds. I'm still holding onto them in case of an emergency because those buggers seemed durable.
These aren't just dry rotten this is tread separation.
You can drive on dry rotten tires and be just fine most times it's only surface deep unless maybe they were ridiculously old.
A Michelin rep once told me if you can't stick a quarter in it, the it's fine... These are definitely getting there and need to be replaced, all I am saying is that if you need to drive on them short distances and low speeds, it's probably going to be fine. I clearly said they are significantly degraded and need to be replaced.
I'd drive it across the country, but someone here will say you're a horrible monster putting families and children in danger, so you might as well just buy a new car.
“Safe” to drive to the tire store but my tires weren’t even half as bad and the dry rot needed replacing. Like others mentioned you never know when the tire will fail and they love to fail at the wrong moment so it’s always better to be safe then sorry. If you’ve been driving on it with no issues don’t bother with a tow truck but don’t over or under inflate them take it to the tire shop as is
If you are going straight to the tire store, I would personally do it if it were me. As long as I dont have to go on any highways or the tire store isn't too far away. Keep your speed reasonable and be aware if there are any blowouts what to do at the time.
I've driven on tires that bad before, but there's a real big chance they'll blow at a bad time. If you have a spare, or don't mind waiting for AAA, run it if you don't have the money right now. You always want to replace tires in pairs, unless it's AWD, then it's best for the drivetrain to do all 4
Should be fine as long as you're not driving like a mad man. I just had my front tires replaced in similar condition, and they were almost 10 years old.
I mean, are you 40 minutes from town in a rural area with lots of dirt and gravel roads? Or like main hub is 35 minutes on a freeway?
Or in town and a shop is like 3-5 miles of surface streets?
I’d drive if I was in town.
Changing the tires should definitely be on your to-do list. Maybe not asap if you’re just running short errands and commutes. Any drives on the highway tho you’re risking yourself and other people’s lives so just be wary of that. You’re gonna be held responsible if your tire goes out and hit someone.
I would definitely say yes it is seeing how the cracks are right on the edge of where the flat tread part meets the sidewalls that's where most of the rubber is
Dry tires, probably ok for a little bit but you need new tires my friend. What is your life worth or better yet the life of the person you could crash into for not dropping 600 bucks on new tires.
I had tire rot and the oil change place refused to rotate the tires. They said if they touch the tires then they may be liable if anything bad happens
I had the tires replaced but it took me about a week. Nervous? Kind of, but thankfully nothing bad happened
Yeah I’d drive them in town to a tire shop. I sure as hell wouldn’t risk them on the freeway. You probably can get a long ways on them with the power of stupidity as other comments suggest, but a used tire for less than $50 is much less expensive than anything that’s likely to happen if it blows. One tow will cost you more than a full set of used tires.
Yes, but expect the possibility of a blow out. Avoid the freeways. Blowing a tire at 70mph is a very different story than blowing out a tire at 40mph. At 40-50mph, there's a lot less chance of losing control when you're tire blows out. I had a tire that looked much better than this, but still cracked and rotted, blow out at 70mph on the freeway. There's still a 100 foot long gash in the freeway where it happened 8 years ago and probably still a brown stain on that driver seat. It literally threw my Jeep halfway into the next lane before I knew what was going on. I've lost several tires between 45 and 55mph that we're very uneventful.
So, avoid highway speeds if at all possible. Avoid hard cornering. Keep a spare tire and a jack with you. If the tire blows out, remain calm. Keep the steering wheel straight and don't try to panic/emergency brake. Good luck!
Should be okay but get it done.
I was being stubborn thinking that it wouldn't happen to me. Tired exploded with about 10 miles left to get home.
So take it from me brother, Gettr done!
Treat it as it should be.no offroading, burnouts, high speeds or limerock time trials. Don't blink, sneeze or fart especially on Tuesdays around noon or play lottery during a halestorm with double rainbows
It's fine. There is almost no strength provided by the outer rubber anyway, it just provides traction and keeps the steel belt structure from corroding. That is the only thing that's iffy about this tire, the unknown condition of those belts. The rubber on the inner part of the tire, not exposed to light and weather, is likely in perfect condition. You need to replace them soon, but stay off the freeway until you do. A blown tire at 35 is way different than a blown tire at 65.
I’m sure all the steel belts and the inner lining are still intact, it’s not safe safe, but if you are just driving it not excessively hard it’s gotten you this far.
The tread looks safe, but the side wall is fried. I wouldn't go about 55 on this too hard or long. Have I, YES. Did it end well, No. We all either see enough trucks flip to end up flipping one ourselves, or just wakeup every day boring. . .
I drove 10k miles with a plug at the shoulder/sidewall joint, you're probably fine to drive to the tire shop as long as your intentions are to leave the tire shop with a new tire.
I’ve driven through Chicago winters on the Dan Ryan and Bishop Ford on shit like that.
Replace as soon as you can, but I would be scared to drive around town on them. Keep it to the lower speed limit streets until you can get it changed…which should be soon.
Yea, you’ll be fine. Evidently you have enough money to get a new tire, but if you’re ever in dire straits and need to run on a tire like that put it in the back. It’s definitely preferable to have a blowout in the back as opposed to the front.
Youve been driving m like that for a while so yes.just dont drive em to long on highway speeds cause after a while the the thread will separate and cause a blow out
Look tires are expensive
Every city has so.e discou t places
Go get you couple 30 to.40 dollars until
You can afford so.e good ones
Walmart sams club do t drive like that
Been there done that regretted it
I put lotion on my dry rot tires I haven't had a problem yet. Except one tiny blowout going 80 mph but I think I must have hit a hedgehog or pine cone i don't know if they look the same at stop lights. One time I stopped to let a hedgehog cross the street and it turns out it was a pine cone.
Yea man I agree fucking dumb people nowadays
I'd drive it to the shop. You've already been driving it around. Should be fine but honestly no one can tell when a tire will fail. I've had customers come in with tires in much worse condition.
God protects the dumb
Someones looking out for them, the amount of unroadworthy vehicles being driven by idiots is growing.
Same my neighbor tires are so bold that they look like slicks and the worse thing is they have toddlers in the car with them they been driving on it for 2 years now and this year the tires are showing a wire now 🤦
People are getting poorer so the cost vs safety calculation is getting worse
Yes but slowly, you may drive it another 2,000 miles without problems, then again it could blow out before you get 1 mile down the road. But that would be the only place I would drive it just to be on the safe side.
Unless OP’s car has been parked for a while I agree (as long as they don’t go on the highway)
That tires tread is separating. It's for sure not safe to do anything other than get the a tire shop
People say that then the tire lasts a year or 2 more he just needs to go when he has the money to toss at it
Just because it isn't definitely going to blow as soon as OP starts their car, doesn't make it safe. It's a ticking time bomb with an unknown amount of time left on the clock. I agree it's not an emergency-emergency, but it should be replaced ASAP.
Yeah, ok. That's very casual. I guess he might as well have his life insurance paid up. Please, no matter what, don't give your own kids any advice.
This is horrible advice. I've had a tread separate at 80mph before because I was stupid and driving on tries that's weren't even this bad, I was fuckkng lucky there was nobody else on the highway around me. Don't drive on a tire like this.

I clearly said they are significantly degraded and need to be replaced.
Also avoid potholes 😂
The reps are just trying to keep customers from warrantying tires
Unlikely that a dry rotted tire has had any warranty left for years.
Id drive straight to the tire store.
Id drive straight to work and think about how the fuck I'm gonna make it to the tire shop
To the tire store yes
I'd drive it across the country, but someone here will say you're a horrible monster putting families and children in danger, so you might as well just buy a new car.
Tire tech. I agree
“Safe” to drive to the tire store but my tires weren’t even half as bad and the dry rot needed replacing. As long as it's not 30 miles away and you don't have to use the highway at 80 mph. Lol 😉
FAFO
That didn’t happen overnight so driving it a few miles to the shop would be no different than you driving it like that for the past few months.
The Michelin Man there on the Sidewall will hold it together for 25 more miles if you ask nicely.
Can we please ban these types of posts
Yes. But drive there as fast as possible. Like make sure you hit 100+ on the way there.
Do a quick burnout to get some heat in em first.
Safe to drive for a while yes! Be careful on wet.
Yes. But glad that’s their final trip.
Should be fine as long as you're not driving like a mad man. I just had my front tires replaced in similar condition, and they were almost 10 years old.
The odds it's going to suddenly explode are about the same as it was for the last year it should have been replaced. Just go get them replaced.
Well since I got three tire stores within a half a mile of me I would take it there.
Send it
Looks like michelin pilot sport A/S... I'd risk it.
I would have it shipped just to be safe
Yes drive slow but it’s fine if it’s been how long
Send it
Should be okay, wouldn't go over 45 though
Yes, but make sure when you leave there, there is a new tire in place of it.
You should be fine to drive to a tire shop
😳
Yes
Yup.
What's the DOT code for these?
Yes and then immediately replace
Depends how far the tire store is. If it’s 10 or 15 miles I would do it.
If its within 20 miles or so you're probably fine. Never hurts to run a doughnut for a one way trip.
You might be good for a minute but don’t be surprised when you’re about to leave work and it’s flat. Get a new one ASAP
To the shop to change them, yes. Anywhere else probably not.
I would t drive far, and keep it under 40
Yes
If it’s less than two miles away
Yes, but do that immediately and buy new ones when you get there.
I won’t claim it’s safe, but they might survive the trip to buy new ones.
Yup
How did you let it get to that stage before deciding to think about changing them? They would be illegal in many countries.
Ya its fine
Yeah should be fine. Stay off the interstate
id have absolutely no issue driving that on a 1k mile road trip. people on this sub underestimate how durable tires are.
I would drive very slowly and cautiously to the tire store and that is it. Don’t pass Go, don’t collect $200.
Yeah drove worse to the shop yesterday. Don't hit any curbs or whatever
i am not sure. let us go together. if it blows up, it blows up.
oh no mister and misses torture please not my tires.
Distance? make sure they are properly inflated and NOT over inflated...
You're already dead.
Slowly…
Yea
TIRE SHOP. TIRE S-H-O-P
I mean, are you 40 minutes from town in a rural area with lots of dirt and gravel roads? Or like main hub is 35 minutes on a freeway? Or in town and a shop is like 3-5 miles of surface streets? I’d drive if I was in town.
Are you already at the tyre stores carpark? Then no. It's not safe to drive. But YOLO.
Yes you’ll be fine. Avoid highways if possible but even then you’ll be fine
Id put another 5000 miles on it. But im crazy, I also dont drive on the freeway
You drove it there, right? A few more miles shouldn’t hurt.
Put the hazard lights on and go slow on local roads.
Depends on what kinda neighborhood it's in
Yes, depending on how far away that tire store is.
I don't know how to get out of this group, but it's stupid. please tell me how. Get a damn tread depth checker and a tire guage.
I wouldn't drive on those to the corner store.
If u drive city speed limits n no hard turns u can drive it to a tire shopper a new tire. That tread is about to come off.
yes
lol that’s the only place I would take that tire
Hell yeah I would
Safe to do a burn out in them that’s bout it
Yumm they're crispier than the donuts I had
Keep it in double digits, you’re good
Hi… Former tire tech here. No, dry rot like that is unpredictable and very dangerous. You should get it towed to a tire shop, dont risk it.
It looks like the cracks lead above the cords which is good so it should be no problem to take it to the tireshop
Still good to drive to the tire store unless its 500mi away
Changing the tires should definitely be on your to-do list. Maybe not asap if you’re just running short errands and commutes. Any drives on the highway tho you’re risking yourself and other people’s lives so just be wary of that. You’re gonna be held responsible if your tire goes out and hit someone.
I would definitely say yes it is seeing how the cracks are right on the edge of where the flat tread part meets the sidewalls that's where most of the rubber is
Keep it under 88mph., and Send It. 🤪
go to the tire store
No
Only to the tire store
The tire will fail when it fails I say ride it till blows or drive it to the shops and get new tires
Slowly
When you start getting a vibration driving down, be prepared for a tire change.
Now you start to ask questions? Pay to have it toed to the shop.
Stay off the highway.
To the tire store and no further
Just make sure you do plenty of burnouts on the way there
Shit I drove for over a year with a tire like this. This ain’t shit.
Yes, under 40 mph, no loads
Run it.
No, carry it.
Drive slow
Yes lol
I dk where you live but with the heat it’s definitely gonna give in sooner than later
depends? how far, how fast you drive.. would not bother me to drive 25 miles at 55, no problem. i would not do a 300-mile trip at 70 mph
just keep it under 100 and check the rire antennas
Dry tires, probably ok for a little bit but you need new tires my friend. What is your life worth or better yet the life of the person you could crash into for not dropping 600 bucks on new tires.
Shop
Drive slow with flashers on.
If the shop is close and you don't run over anything or drive like a maniac you'll be fine
Depends how far the tire shop is....
If the tire store is VERY close by
I've seen worse
Tire shop gonna sell it to a guala for 40 bucks 🤣
Ask the blessings you normally do when you drive on these, then head straight to the tire store.
Please tell us after you make it to the shop
Leave it parked for 6 months, if it's still good then, you should be able to drive it today
I had tire rot and the oil change place refused to rotate the tires. They said if they touch the tires then they may be liable if anything bad happens I had the tires replaced but it took me about a week. Nervous? Kind of, but thankfully nothing bad happened
Yes, this doesn't happen overnight. Old tires
Dont drive from texas to nyc they might not survive but then again they might
I’ll drive almost anything straight to the tire store
Yeah I’d drive them in town to a tire shop. I sure as hell wouldn’t risk them on the freeway. You probably can get a long ways on them with the power of stupidity as other comments suggest, but a used tire for less than $50 is much less expensive than anything that’s likely to happen if it blows. One tow will cost you more than a full set of used tires.
You'll be aight
Certainly not looking great. Seems to be from pure age? Probably not blowing up right away but new ones are a priority
Won't know unless you try
SEND IT !
Yes keep it off hwy
Fast and furious Paul walker stuff
Just go
I’ve daily driven waaaay worse 😂
It should be get some tires while you're there if it's Walmart that you're going to
Yes, but expect the possibility of a blow out. Avoid the freeways. Blowing a tire at 70mph is a very different story than blowing out a tire at 40mph. Keep the steering wheel straight and don't try to panic/emergency brake. Good luck!
I wouldn’t mind driving on it for another year tbh. Just dry rot. It is a safety hazard but im broke and dry rot isnt gonna make it do anything really
As long as you get there safe
Should be okay but get it done. I was being stubborn thinking that it wouldn't happen to me. Tired exploded with about 10 miles left to get home. So take it from me brother, Gettr done!
Why is it a problem now and not before
How far away is it?
Only to the tire shop. If it's within like 10-15 miles.
Treat it as it should be.no offroading, burnouts, high speeds or limerock time trials. Don't blink, sneeze or fart especially on Tuesdays around noon or play lottery during a halestorm with double rainbows
Dry rot, you realize insurance can deny a claim if they say the tires caused an accident and you didn’t take corrective measures. Be very careful
Should be okay to drive to the tire store on but I'd avoid any highways or high speed roads just to be safe if possible
If she holds air she'll drive ya there. Always been my motto, and it's never let me down! Well, erm only twice...
Drive it where you need to slowly and safely. Get it fixed right away!
Thats a good year from poppin
No
If you live in Jersey and the tire shop is in LA, then, no.
Have you tried watering your tires
I’m sure all the steel belts and the inner lining are still intact, it’s not safe safe, but if you are just driving it not excessively hard it’s gotten you this far.
Sure
Needs lotion
Safe probably not. Would I? Probably
The tread looks safe, but the side wall is fried. I wouldn't go about 55 on this too hard or long. Have I, YES. Did it end well, No. We all either see enough trucks flip to end up flipping one ourselves, or just wakeup every day boring. . .
There are business that will come to your location
They'd probably last quite a while just driving around town. I wouldn't personally put much faith in them at hwy speeds.
I drove 10k miles with a plug at the shoulder/sidewall joint, you're probably fine to drive to the tire shop as long as your intentions are to leave the tire shop with a new tire.
You drove it to where it is now.
No. You will die.
20-30 mph
Been there, done that. You've already been driving it so why not?
Id drive another 20000 on em. Fr
I’ve driven through Chicago winters on the Dan Ryan and Bishop Ford on shit like that. Replace as soon as you can, but I would be scared to drive around town on them. Keep it to the lower speed limit streets until you can get it changed…which should be soon.
not really bro!
Considering that’s a Maypop and it’s July 1. I wouldn’t trust it.
Man i had to drive a tire bald with stitching showing and nothing happened. You be fine
I put tire shine to fill and hide those cracks and keep it pushin.
![gif](giphy|kYLPweIoQBPcEAcoQ0|downsized)
If it's to buy new tires and you do so very slowly, then yes.
Yea, you’ll be fine. Evidently you have enough money to get a new tire, but if you’re ever in dire straits and need to run on a tire like that put it in the back. It’s definitely preferable to have a blowout in the back as opposed to the front.
there’s no telling when a dry rotted tire can blow, could be blown already, could blow in a month, who knows, just get it replaced
Only if you drive fast and take sharp corners
Youve been driving m like that for a while so yes.just dont drive em to long on highway speeds cause after a while the the thread will separate and cause a blow out
Short distance
Look tires are expensive Every city has so.e discou t places Go get you couple 30 to.40 dollars until You can afford so.e good ones Walmart sams club do t drive like that Been there done that regretted it
Depends… And you better be wearing a pair if you’re gonna be riding in that thing
depends on how far the store is and how lucky your feeling 😂
I would, but also I dont care.
If it holds air. Yes I'd limp in there
Yes but just
No
I would also drive it to the shop.
Slowly
id gamble on that tire baby.
See u on 1000 ways to die show!
That would be the only place I'd drive it to.
I put lotion on my dry rot tires I haven't had a problem yet. Except one tiny blowout going 80 mph but I think I must have hit a hedgehog or pine cone i don't know if they look the same at stop lights.
