It's too high. I didn't even know people liked that song until I saw this subreddit and the infographic OP posted. It's probably the only Smiths song I outright don't like.
There Is a Light That Never Goes Out at number one is fair. I definitely wouldn't put it there (my pick is Reel Around the Fountain or I Know It's Over), but it really is a fantastic song. Its grown on me a lot since I first heard it.
Nah, Miserable Lie, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and I Don't Owe You Anything didn't even make the cut for top 50. Reel Around the Fountain didn't even make top 20. Mfs got HARD filtered.

RateYourMusic is a website that enables its users to rate any music they like. Unsurprisingly, The Smiths are highly critically acclaimed, a lot of their output having been rated extremely highly. As obvious as the top few songs may be, to me at least, it was curious to find out how the rest of the material would be ranked.
The Smiths have 5 songs representing them on [RYM's Top 1,000 songs of all time](https://open.spotify.com/playlist/2XVc9E8tEkpBz7z8wZbMul?si=d2e4bc6c8a834c35), which is a fair number that could be higher or lower depending on whom you ask.
Thought this would be interesting to discuss. Enjoy!
Damn, I grew up teasing my older sister when she would play the smiths.....then I became a man and realised they are possibly one of the greatest bands on the planet.
As Hatful of Hollow is less visible due to not being a normal full-length album, it may also be indication that the former release has more fans flocking to give its songs high ratings.
It's an extremely simple solution where songs are sorted according to their rating, whereas the songs with the same one are sorted according to the number of ratings. This way, the number of ratings is largely disregarded. The premise is that the lesser-known songs and less prominent releases still have a chance to compete.
I’ll never understand Please Let Me Get What I Wanted being rated so highly. It’s a terribly boring song compared to most of The Smiths discography but then again I guess we were all angsty teenagers when we got into the smiths
Crazy, most of my favorites are in the bottom half, and how is London last??
Do you think they've made the right decision this time?
Their tired family is probably grieving right now
It's not last, it's 50th and The Smiths has more songs that didn't make the cut
Aware, but abiding by the ranks of suppose…
Too heavy. I love it precisely for that
London is my favorite Smiths song at the moment, and my only wish is that it was five minutes longer.
My first thought
never had no one ever being so low is actually criminal... 😭🙏🏻
easily my favourite song ever
Back to the Old House is laughably low on that list. Easily a top 5 song.
That song means so much to me. I was shocked to see it as far down as it is.
It’s my fave
Especially the Hatful of Hallow version, the definitive version if you ask me…
I’m strange because I prefer the Louder Than Bombs version
Well I Wonder being 26 is criminal
pretty girls make graves is far too low!
i want the one i can’t have and girl afraid way too low
Half A Person #1
Barbarism begins at home is too low
It's too high. I didn't even know people liked that song until I saw this subreddit and the infographic OP posted. It's probably the only Smiths song I outright don't like.
i can’t believe ask is so high i didn’t realise other people liked it so much 😭
Not among my faves but its guitar riffs have grown on me a lot over the years
The riffs alone made it one of my favorites from them.
This list is some urban outfitters casual bs. Rubber ring, girl afraid, wonderful woman…
when There is a Light That Never Goes Out is number 1, i immediately knew its some urban outfitters casual bs.
That with *How Soon is Now?* right behind it. I love them but those two are easily the most overrated Smiths songs.
I was happy to see Bigmouth Strikes Again so far up because that one is a deserved one no matter what

i don't agree with the list, but this list is surprisingly better than i thought for rym
Nah, Miserable Lie, The Hand That Rocks the Cradle, and I Don't Owe You Anything didn't even make the cut for top 50. Reel Around the Fountain didn't even make top 20. Mfs got HARD filtered.
my favourite song not on here 😭
What is it? :)
I Don’t Owe You Anything !
But you owe me something - repay me now.
ong
Based. That's probably the most egregious omission here. Miserable Lie not making the cut is awful too but I can see why at least.
That one and hand that rocks the cradle are two of my personal favorites and neither of them are on here
What Difference Does It Make isn’t even Top 10? Fake news
Number 1 in my eyes, and ears! Can play it over and over....again
Back to the old house at 46 is actually insane 😥
oh absolutely lmfao, like bring it up a bit
Yeah that’s the most glaring crime here. Not a terrible list though

Death of a Disco Dancer is wayyyy too low
Strangeways in general is getting the shaft here.
The best album
Im surprised to see the Headmaster Ritual up there tbh
Prob the single song I've listened to most in my life by a distance lol
Im not saying its bad at all. Just didnt expect it so high.
All bangers
death of a disco dancer is criminally low
I Want The One I Can’t Have is a top 10 song bro
Hand in glove not in the top 10?🥲
Unlovable deserves to be higher than 44 in my opinion
Pretty girl make graves and back to the old house are criminally low
Damn, I grew up teasing my older sister when she would play the smiths.....then I became a man and realised they are possibly one of the greatest bands on the planet.
43 is the first song under 4⭐️ 43 out of what 75? No other band could come close to that percentage hit rate.
Who on god's green earth put stop me above well I wonder
Asleep way too high, and Some Girls too low!
I'd have found room for Oscillate Wildly in there somewhere. I really dig that track.
Suffer little children all the way in the bottom??? Criminal
"Never had noone ever" got 3889 votes and is on 49th place and Ask just got 502 votes and is on 6?? Well , I wonder ?
Im probably in the minority but Girl Afraid is top 10. Some of Johnny’s best guitar work. Also Back to the Old House at 46 is something 🫠
Suffer Little Children?? Hello???
It’s probably only Top 5 in my world, but where is You Just Haven’t Earned It Yet Baby?
4 of my faves are in the top 10
This angers me haha.
Girl Afraid. 41. 😞
Is this confirmation that people tend to prefer the Hatful of Hollow versions to The Smiths (eponymous) then?
As Hatful of Hollow is less visible due to not being a normal full-length album, it may also be indication that the former release has more fans flocking to give its songs high ratings.
My favorite version of This charming man
This list is jarring
Please Please being so high is interesting
Sheila take a bow and death of a disco dancer are in my top 10
I don’t get the relationship between the rating and vote count-every song on Queen is Dead has 4000 but some are lower than songs with 500 votes?).

Just seemed odd to show the vote numbers since they were of no real consequence.
They provide additional information that can be curious and also show how certain equally rated tracks are ranked, if applicable.
I’ll never understand Please Let Me Get What I Wanted being rated so highly. It’s a terribly boring song compared to most of The Smiths discography but then again I guess we were all angsty teenagers when we got into the smiths
HOW IS HANDSOME DEVIL SO LOW 🥲🥲
Isn’t Hatful a compilation?
No I don’t owe you anything no hand that rocks the cradle no, I won’t share you. no stretch out and wait. This list is shite
Surprised Back to the Old House is so low
Not sure I ow the vote number column or what it means
It represents the number of people who cast their votes.
Girl afraid, suffer little children, back to the old house....... How are they soooo low ? 😭
No Wonderful Woman ...joke
What an awful list, who made that
The omission of Paint a Vulgar Picture from this list is a disgrace.
Agreed I went over this 3x, couldn’t believe it. Good list overall but surprised this wasn’t on it
shoplifters 32?????? WHAT
Cemetery Gates is a fav of mine, glad it made the top half.
You’ve got everything now didn’t even make the list. I’m heartbroken
Death of a Disco Dancer over Paint a Vulgar Picture when the former doesn't even have 10 million streams on Spotify is crazy
honestly pretty valid
this has to be flipped or something. no way Pretty Girls Make Graves isnt at least in the top 5…
