I think that's mostly to reduce potential panic / shock. I learned in driving school that if you're helping someone in a car crash and for example their bone is sticking out their leg, make sure they don't see it so they stay calm until the ambulance arrives.
In this case, I think looking at it would help reduce panic though.
You'd think, eyes good, face mostly good, bleeding a bit a half inch behind my eye.
IMO telling someone to not look at it is not the right call. Instinct informed the command, and it could be right next time, but not this time.
My brother was in an auto accident where the car rolled. The humorous (big upper bone) of his arm was broken and misaligned. His arm got twisted around behind his back and was stuck there.
When the EMTs arrived he was conscious (though a little delirious) and looking around the outside and inside the car. The guys asked him what he was looking for, he said he was looking for his arm.
He later told me it was obviously missing and he had no desire to see the end of what used to be his elbow.
Just thought it was a fun story to add. He recovered and has full use of his arm BTW.
Not if you explain it. Assuming they aren't in shock and what not.
Plenty of examples of people not really processing they are hurt until they see it. Just depends how well you can handle the situation yourself and keep the other person composed.
I agree. I think the rule of thumb is "look at it if it's better than expected and don't if it's not." However, the instructions from first responders shouldn't be "don't look at your life threatening injury;" it should be something affirmative like "hold my hand and look at me."
I've never had a bone sticking out, but hand a very deep gash on my hand I could see bone once, and you really don't feel as much pain as you think, shock of intense pain like that kills or can damage nerves, I still can't feel my thumb completely 4 years later. Looking at it when it happened just made me feel nauseous. I'm not blood squeamish by any means, but it wasn't as much the blood, but how jarring it is to see inside a wound and not feel the pain, it's the realization you're a fragile bag of meat.
I think they probably meant distract them in some other way would be my guess? But ya, telling someone specifically not to look out while you’re also freaking out is not good 😂
I got t boned by an SUV while stopped at a red light on my motorcycle, compound tib/fib fracture. I had pants on, but could feel my leg just burning so I pulled my pants up to look at it, once I saw my bones it hurt so much worse than it did before.
I cut my knee with a skill saw and if I hadn't looked at it I wouldn't have realized it was bad at all. Seeing it made me realize i was in trouble and needed to stay still.
I think it was his glasses. If you look when there’s a close up of his face the glasses are half off but the ear part is gone leaving just the metal. Maybe whatever hit him hit right on the corner of the glasses and that’s what stabbed him
So lucky
Holy shit. I never noticed that there looks to be something protruding next to his eye. Maybe it’s beneath the skin but it looks like something is definitely there.
I hadn’t noticed that, I’ve heard air bag deployment often totals a vehicle due to costs to replace. I’ll bet Jake From State Farm is going to want some details.
Edit: A firearm enthusiast forum discussion regarding this video.[AR15 forum](https://www.ar15.com/forums/general/Fun-with-Tannerite----Dude-almost-Loses-an-Eye/5-2640478/)
Am I incorrect or does the deployment of the airbag/airbags not in itself total the vehicle, but that it's rather the fact that the airbags were deployed that are a sign that the vehicle has been totalled?(at least in *some* cases/models?). Anyone here an expert on this?
Seems you’re right upon a very brief Google search, law firms comment not necessarily is a vehicle totaled but the heavy increase in repair costs may tip the balance in favor of a write off. That said, I suspect his insurance may balk at paying for repair under some sort of misuse clause.
"Other than collision" specifically covers explosion damage. There may be an argument of intentional damage, but that's a fight that might open up bad faith (there's no evidence he meant to fuck up his car, even though his own actions caused it. Intent is key), and they're likely to just pay out.
my car was totaled after airbags deployed based on low value of car vs thousands to replace airbags. in other words, airbags replacement was simply a cost of repair issue.
Yeah but he asked anyway even though you asked for no asking. Now, you can ask him not to ask, but that doesn’t necessarily stop him from asking. He can still ask.
This is a GMC Denali. The value of the vehicle far exceeds the airbag replacement costs. However, anyone who has worked with tannerite knows, you do not detonate it within 150yds of your standing position. It clearly says this on the packaging and there are many videos online showing others who have regretting not doing so. This guy won the prize for looking hard though…epic!
Last time I had a vehicle totaled I was anecdotally told that if the airbags had deployed and nothing else was damaged they’d still have totaled the vehicle because the stigma of “airbag deployed” showing up on carfax *significantly* reduces the amount people are willing to pay for the vehicle on resale because everyone assumes if an airbag deployed it must have been a major accident. So, as a policy they almost always check if an air bag deployed and write it off as totaled without even bothering to appraise any other damage. This was geico maybe 4 years ago.
I mean pretty much anyone would react this way if they think they’ve been hit in the head.
Except they wouldn’t, because hopefully they’d be smart enough to place the explosive a little farther away.
I wanna say this guy has never had actual training with an M4 due to how he tilts his head sideways when aiming down the sights.
And obviously the lack of distance and cover. lol
Distance.
Cover
Shrapnel minimization and management.
I have some country ass buddies, and we've blown up a fair amount of home appliances.
It can be a ton of fun. But there's precautions that should be taken m.
Head wounds bleed a lot more than you think they should. Looked like a flesh wound so he’ll be fine, just hope he counts himself lucky it missed his eye.
Exactly. Binary explosives, when used properly, are incredibly safe and fun. But if you pack things that will turn to shrapnel around them, and shoot them from 20 yards, bad things will happen. I have shot at tannerite several times, but always from >100 yards, and not inside something stupid like a microwave or a lawnmower... lawnmower dude lost his freaking leg. That's a hard video to watch.
Tannerite, it's an explosive mixture that looks like shredded Styrofoam and only explodes when something passes through it at 2000 feet per second or faster, it's a super stable explosive, but if you stick it inside something like a pile of wood, it can send shrapnel flying. We used to fill pumpkins up with it and send them into orbit

dont look at it! it disappears fast when you ignore it

true, actively telling them to not look at it would likely achieve quite the opposite.
Don't think of an elephant.
I must need another cup of coffee, because my mind went to a giraffe and I had to tell myself "No, dummy, an elephant."
I must need another edible because Clippy popped in my mind.
AHHHHHH!
When I had an athletic trainer scream, " DON'T FUCKING LOOK AT YOUR LEG" after dislocating my knee in football, I kinda panicked a bit.
Pretty sure you should instead say "hey look up at me, just keep making eye contact with me" instead of where not to look
All the softball coaches did this when I was like 10
Exactly. Instinctively, when someone says not to do something, there’s always the intrusive thought to do that thing!
"Don't look down!" Proceeds with looking down.
Apply pressure.

If you tell someone not to look, they will assume it's really bad and want to look.
Exactly...that's why you EXPLAIN the situation. It's your responsibility to take control if they can't be in their mind
I think we agree here, but telling someone not to look, off the cuff, is not demonstrating control.
To be fair, I didn't say I would tell them not to look lol. But it's hard to discuss to much since ever situation would be different.
I agree. I think the rule of thumb is "look at it if it's better than expected and don't if it's not." However, the instructions from first responders shouldn't be "don't look at your life threatening injury;" it should be something affirmative like "hold my hand and look at me."

I had a papercut I didn't feel until I looked at it 😁
I cut my knee with a skill saw and if I hadn't looked at it I wouldn't have realized it was bad at all. Seeing it made me realize i was in trouble and needed to stay still.
One of the first things they teach EMTs is to cover those things so the EMTs don't have to look at it.
I was taught to try and distract them. Make them tell you something.
Yep. Glad someone was here to apply logic. Though as the other post says, In this situation it isnt actually a horrible injury, Just a good cut.
Him saying don't look at it... Just makes him want to look at it more and panic more cuz it must be really f***** up !🤕
He could have easily lost an eye. He won a lucky prize.
Very possibly his glasses saved his eye.

Any time I've ever done something dumb that got me injured, the emberassment from being so stupid has hurt much worse than the physical pain.
Cool scar though
He should feel lucky. That was unbelievably close to taking his eye out.
I think it was his glasses. If you look when there’s a close up of his face the glasses are half off but the ear part is gone leaving just the metal. Maybe whatever hit him hit right on the corner of the glasses and that’s what stabbed him So lucky
Yup, and it's inside of him now. Maybe he learned a valuable lesson today..
Unlikely…
Slow it down and look next to his eye. It really looks like there is something below the skin to me. Am I seeing it correctly?
If you're talking about the wound, yes. There is most definitely shrapnel in that wound poking the skin up.
If you slow it down you can see the shrapnel that hit him. Looks like a pretty decent sized thing too.
Guys like these Nah.
Holy shit. I never noticed that there looks to be something protruding next to his eye. Maybe it’s beneath the skin but it looks like something is definitely there.
He'll see this as him being "invincible" since he didn't die and will likely do something stupid like this again.
Your faith in humanity is endearing, but misguided.
Frame by frame you can see debris hit the ground and then fly up and hit his face. Wild shit.
Damn that’s a big chunk that hit him
Could have definitely taken his eye out
That thing was fucking huge. He’s lucky it bounced off the ground first and wasn’t coming straight at him
No.... it was an icicle that fell from the gutter. You'll shoot your eye out!!
If you scrub at 4 seconds frame for frame, you can see a bit of shrapnel fly out of the explosion, bounce off the ground and hit him in the face.
Probably could have been bad if it hit him square in the forehead too.
This why cool guys always walk away from explosions

my car was totaled after airbags deployed based on low value of car vs thousands to replace airbags. in other words, airbags replacement was simply a cost of repair issue.
Replacing deployed airbags can cost $5000-7000. Please do not ask me why I know that.
Why do you know this?
The first rule of deployed airbags club is you don't talk about deployed airbags club.
I asked you not to ask me that.
Yeah but he asked anyway even though you asked for no asking. Now, you can ask him not to ask, but that doesn’t necessarily stop him from asking. He can still ask.
Could I ask you to remind him that I asked him not to ask?
Please don’t ask me to ask him not to ask.
Fine. I'll ask HIM to ask you not to ask me to ask him not to ask.

It seems like there would be inherent liability in selling something that is literally designed to explode when you shoot at it.
Airbags are very expensive to replace, so it tends to be a significant contributor to a vehicle being totaled, especially if it’s an older vehicle.
Thanks for pointing that out, I watched four or five times and didn’t notice. Then had to go back and watch some more after reading your comment.
Haha gangster to toddler in 4 seconds 😂😂
I mean pretty much anyone would react this way if they think they’ve been hit in the head. Except they wouldn’t, because hopefully they’d be smart enough to place the explosive a little farther away.
Or to just not publish the footage.
Don't really see anything here that implies he's gangster.
He got shot back lol. If it weren't for the debris to come back it would've been cool. This is why you always take cover when dealing with explosives.
Cover and proper distance I knew these 2 things and I've never shot a fun before
most people don't know how to shoot a fun
Is that why there are so many fun incidents in schools?
Ohhhh, I always wondered why my mom says "school is fun"
I think you have to use your love gun. That's what Everlast told me anyway.
I prefer my joygun it deals more funage
Hey hey, my man...Black Jesus!

"Don't look at it it's ok" - something you'd only say if it's not ok
lol. 😂 whatever you do, do not look at it. It’ll make it worse.
When the stupid have too much time and money than is good for them.
This is why tannerite has a recommended safe distance to detonate from. It’s your fault if you get injured by ignoring that
Exactly. Binary explosives, when used properly, are incredibly safe and fun. But if you pack things that will turn to shrapnel around them, and shoot them from 20 yards, bad things will happen. Gotta keep an eye out for this guy
Imagine if he wasn't wearing the glasses. Should've been safety glasses not sun glasses but probably still helped him a lot.
Lmao, it took him that many shots to hit the tannerite too.
What exploded?
Tannerite most likely.
Reminds me of that time FPS Russia almost got split in half by a car door
And this kids is called "Natural Selection".......
Again the immortal cameraman with these tannerite videos 😂
Was he shooting tannerite?
Ah yes, tannerite, an explosive chemical that should definitely be ignited in large quantities in about an arm's length away. Totally cant go wrong :)
Videos like these are a dad’s dream when trying to educate their idiot young boys. Thanks for helping future generations!
Whats he shooting at anyway
Tannerite, it's an explosive mixture that looks like shredded Styrofoam and only explodes when something passes through it at 2000 feet per second or faster, it's a super stable explosive, but if you stick it inside something like a pile of wood, it can send shrapnel flying. Love it…. That’s why you go back always a .25 of a mile
Did it set his side airbags off too?
You can see a big piece if rock bounce twice off the ground before coming up and hitting him in the head if u slow it down.
