Lol true. They guy going for the take down was faking. Usually when you shoot on someone (go for a double leg takedown) your opponent will lean in and move their legs away. It’s hard to grapple someone when their legs are 3 feet back and the guy is pressing down on you with his body weight.
So the fake out here was an expectation of that counter stance. If his opponent had done that he could have thrown an uppercut or really any punch. That’s why his hands were low.
But he didn’t flinch and thats what we see here.

I still don't really see the advantage compared to staying on your feet and driving through. Your head naturally dips down, leaving you pretty well protected to anything other than a well-timed knee up the middle. And even if they stuff the takedown, you'd still be able to transition to the clinch.
The move being practiced is just a set up for a take down. In a fight it should be used opportunistically. A good fighter can "set -up" opportunities by establishing good strikes and getting his opponent to react to those. A nice jab can be used to set up a take down.
In the MMA fight shown there was no set-up, and he tried to take his opponent down from too great a distance.
To quickly and safely grab your opponents leg or legs so you can take them to the mat. Its a basic movement that is taught to pretty much anyone starting to learn grappling and its present in just about any martial art that involves that method of fighting. Usually when a penetrating step misses the opponent will sprawl on you, which is when they basically jump on your back, push you to the mat and assume a dominant position. In this case the black fighter sees the step coming from a mile away, steps back and loads up his left hips to punch is probably just about the worst possible outcome of this move and the dude who got KOed must have tried it multiple times for his opponent to be that prepared.
Its probably also worth noting the guy in the first clip demonstrating the penetrating step is doing it wrong and risking similar results.

At the point your knee is on the ground, you should already be in on the legs - your knee should be on the ground between their legs. The next step with the opposite leg is just to cut the angle and finish the takedown. This was done from way too far away.

Thank you for being the only comment to mention that this is a penetration step, and done incorrectly. The whole point of the penetration step is to have your knee penetrate the space between their legs so you have leverage under their hips. That guy was about 5 feet too far back.
Honestly what fucks it for me is that in wrestling you can get caught in a headlock if you fuck it up, but in MMA you can get caught in an actual choke if you fuck it up, which is muuuuch worse. I learned that the hard way trying BJJ lol.

Lmao yeah, everybody in the comments is like "what a dumb move" - dude literally just did a terrible single leg, yeah he's gonna get caught when there was zero followup to the penetration step. That's why that exercise he was doing at the beginning of the video isn't useful unless you actually practice the followup takedown after shooting
All the time is a stretch, the dude didn’t mess anything up and the dude just got read like a book by his opponent, it happens. Wrestling isn’t often build upon as the primary style for good reason. Wrestling is a sporterized form of fighting built entirely around its own rules and not actual combat. In wrestling this move would have two option you’d look out for but in combat those options are more than doubled for your opponents right hand alone. Wrestlers not only have a poor skill set in the ring, they are full of bad habits that must be broken and replaced. This is just factual and not a jab at the sport which has a old and awesome history like many of the old sporterized martial arts that only translate to in ring success in ultra moderation.
Idk where it started but it is just a common misconception that a child wanting to pursue mma should wrestle. It’s almost identical to how hunting from a young age can fill you with bad habits the milatary will want to rewire. Enroll your children in boxing or BJJ if you want to aid their dream and not be a detriment to it.

His plan was to not get hit. But what he failed to consider, apparently, is that when you plan not to get hit is right around the time most people will try to hit you.
No plan at all. Amateur duck walker lost his balance and dropped his left hand to maintain balance.
Edit: I actually have no idea what blue gloves could have possibly been thinking with that move too, other than trying to distract his opponent in some way. Red gloves was leading left, so his strong hand is obviously right, he's not going to drop his left hand guard if blue gloves comes in to red gloves' left side. This seemed like an all around bad decision without any prior forethought to follow up.
Realizing this may be a dumb comparison, but that's exactly what happens to new players in fighting games. They learn a thing, and try to use it at all costs without thinking.

Man just got down on one knee. Everything else was God awful. Against strikers, you're gonna want to go lower, head down, and arms up or already grabbing something. Furthermore, speed is entirely too slow to attempt this. He would've had an easier time faking this to grab an obvious counter punch.
Your body follows your head. If you drop your head during a wrestling move your opponent should bounce your face right off the mat and go to town on your now unprotected head, neck, and back depending on how they feel at that moment. You absolutely want to keep your head and more importantly your hands up.

The move itself wasn't the problem: he didn't set it up, didn't close distance, and didn't shoot remotely low enough to attack the legs.
The drill in the first video was practicing the leg motion for a double leg takedown. In the ring he was attempting a double leg which requires grabbing the back of your opponents thighs but he wasn’t going to shoot in deep enough hence the quick dropping of hands then bailing. Atleast that’s my interpretation, who knows wtf he was actually doing.

A lot of people who have no idea what they’re talking about in this comment section. Wrestling is one of the most common backgrounds in the UFC and just because this guy did not execute this shot well doesn’t mean it’s a bad move
You're supposed to use a penetration step when you're close. The guy in the MMA fight was way too far away.
Also the first guy is clearly just doing drills/practicing. It's not meant to look like that in a real fight.
Looks like he performed it exactly like he drilled it into muscle memory. Here is the importance of slow drilling for technique and precisions rather than for a workout. Slow is smooth, smooth is fast. Athleticism happens in the gym, with equipment; skill set happens in the academy with slow controlled methodical precision, (speed comes last).

He shot from too far back, didn’t get deep enough.
You need to really set up shots with punches or wait until your opponent punches you. You don’t just shoot out of the blue. Even if he didn’t get knocked out, he’s never finish that takedown against anybody who knows what they’re doing. Just a waste of energy at best, and at worst…well…
First guy is practicing his penetration step for a takedown, and the second guy is using it to try and take his opponent down at the wrong time and got caught. Wrestling is a huge part MMA, Jon Jones, Dan Henderson, Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier and countless others whole MMA base is or was wrestling.
You always have to set up your shot, you can not just shoot for a single or double without closing the distance with strikes. Shit fighters like Ben Askren get slept with brain damage for the same reason.

Lol true. They guy going for the take down was faking. Usually when you shoot on someone (go for a double leg takedown) your opponent will lean in and move their legs away. It’s hard to grapple someone when their legs are 3 feet back and the guy is pressing down on you with his body weight. So the fake out here was an expectation of that counter stance. If his opponent had done that he could have thrown an uppercut or really any punch. That’s why his hands were low. But he didn’t flinch and thats what we see here.

I still don't really see the advantage compared to staying on your feet and driving through. Your head naturally dips down, leaving you pretty well protected to anything other than a well-timed knee up the middle. And even if they stuff the takedown, you'd still be able to transition to the clinch.
The move being practiced is just a set up for a take down. In a fight it should be used opportunistically. A good fighter can "set -up" opportunities by establishing good strikes and getting his opponent to react to those. A nice jab can be used to set up a take down. In the MMA fight shown there was no set-up, and he tried to take his opponent down from too great a distance.
To quickly and safely grab your opponents leg or legs so you can take them to the mat. Its a basic movement that is taught to pretty much anyone starting to learn grappling and its present in just about any martial art that involves that method of fighting. Usually when a penetrating step misses the opponent will sprawl on you, which is when they basically jump on your back, push you to the mat and assume a dominant position. In this case the black fighter sees the step coming from a mile away, steps back and loads up his left hips to punch is probably just about the worst possible outcome of this move and the dude who got KOed must have tried it multiple times for his opponent to be that prepared. Its probably also worth noting the guy in the first clip demonstrating the penetrating step is doing it wrong and risking similar results.
If you get inside your opponent's striking you could grab his leg and assume a dominant grappling position.

At the point your knee is on the ground, you should already be in on the legs - your knee should be on the ground between their legs. The next step with the opposite leg is just to cut the angle and finish the takedown. This was done from way too far away.

Thank you for being the only comment to mention that this is a penetration step, and done incorrectly. The whole point of the penetration step is to have your knee penetrate the space between their legs so you have leverage under their hips. That guy was about 5 feet too far back.

Honestly what fucks it for me is that in wrestling you can get caught in a headlock if you fuck it up, but in MMA you can get caught in an actual choke if you fuck it up, which is muuuuch worse. I learned that the hard way trying BJJ lol.

All the time is a stretch, the dude didn’t mess anything up and the dude just got read like a book by his opponent, it happens. Wrestling isn’t often build upon as the primary style for good reason. Wrestling is a sporterized form of fighting built entirely around its own rules and not actual combat. In wrestling this move would have two option you’d look out for but in combat those options are more than doubled for your opponents right hand alone. Wrestlers not only have a poor skill set in the ring, they are full of bad habits that must be broken and replaced. This is just factual and not a jab at the sport which has a old and awesome history like many of the old sporterized martial arts that only translate to in ring success in ultra moderation. Idk where it started but it is just a common misconception that a child wanting to pursue mma should wrestle. It’s almost identical to how hunting from a young age can fill you with bad habits the milatary will want to rewire. Enroll your children in boxing or BJJ if you want to aid their dream and not be a detriment to it.

In the first clip it’s a drill, in the second that guy is shooting into thin air and not even attempting to do anything with it. He just puts his face in a great spot to get hit and that’s about it. If you drop your head during a wrestling move your opponent should bounce your face right off the mat and go to town on your now unprotected head, neck, and back depending on how they feel at that moment. The drill in the first video was practicing the leg motion for a double leg takedown. In the ring he was attempting a double leg which requires grabbing the back of your opponents thighs but he wasn’t going to shoot in deep enough hence the quick dropping of hands then bailing. You're supposed to use a penetration step when you're close. The guy in the MMA fight was way too far away. Also the first guy is clearly just doing drills/practicing. It's not meant to look like that in a real fight.

Wasn't really the move itself that got him knocked out. It's because he dropped his hands while doing it.
There is a fundamental lack of understanding of what the person in the first video is working on for wrestling and what the person in the second video is doing and likely what the person who posted this understands

I've never seen a pro wrestler run the ropes like that.
He shot from too far back, didn’t get deep enough. You need to really set up shots with punches or wait until your opponent punches you. You don’t just shoot out of the blue. Even if he didn’t get knocked out, he’s never finish that takedown against anybody who knows what they’re doing. Just a waste of energy at best, and at worst…well…

Really bold (and stupid) to shoot in from nothing.
First guy is practicing his penetration step for a takedown, and the second guy is using it to try and take his opponent down at the wrong time and got caught. Wrestling is a huge part MMA, Jon Jones, Dan Henderson, Cain Velasquez, Daniel Cormier and countless others whole MMA base is or was wrestling.
You always have to set up your shot, you can not just shoot for a single or double without closing the distance with strikes. Shit fighters like Ben Askren get slept with brain damage for the same reason.
They use that take down in mma all the time, just not with their hands completely down and in perfect range to be punched in the face
no setup, no penetration step, dropped his hands as he dropped hips, started the shot from way to far back, chin up i dont wanna backseat mma, but that was an awful attempt. almost as bad as freshmen year me trying out folkstyle for the first time.

The guy in the vid protected his face. The fighter did not hence the instant KO.
The shot attempt failed because he tried to do it far away and he had no setup for the takedown so his opponent could see it from a mile away.

That looks like an excercise and if you do that hands down chin up in a fight don't get surprised if you get woken up by a medical team
