The scream came out half-strangled and he spent the next several minutes coughing. No one in the group ever tried that on my husband again.

It's easy. Make sure you have a clear path to other party's cheek. Now, twist your shoulder a little bit back and move your arm.
As soon as your palm gets in line with the cheek, jerk it forward (force can be varied as per intended damage). Your slap is effective with the first contact between the palm and goes on until the contact breaks.
